- The Cyberpunk Genre (A deeper look at the world of high tech, low life)
High tech, low life, these 4 words are frequently used to describe the world of #cyberpunk. In this video, we will take a deep look into the world of Cyberpunk, its origin and how it compares to the real one

I've been living in Russia, and honestly, you don't know cyberpunk until you see bright ads playing all night over the entire face of a 41 story building with a fancy restaurant on top for the wealthy while you look on from your rundown, broken apartment..
... But that's not all! The Russian Federation is a post-apocalyptic country. There were two apocalypses, the collapse of the Russian Empire, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is a country that has undergone de-industrialization, and de-ruralization. Step outside of Moscow, St Petersburg, Volgagrad, Rostov, or any other major city, and you'll experience a wasteland of totally abandoned factories, ruined churches, depopulated villages, no one lives there! Especially in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country. Just entire regions the size of France, depopulated as if it was from Fallout. Even TNO is looking better, because in that video game there were states in Eastern Russia, which is now mostly abandoned outside of a few urban hubs. The population of Russia is on the same order as the population of Japan. And compare the size of Japan to the size of Russia. UA-camrs keep yelling about how Japan is dying out, I don't think so. The population density in Japan is much higher than in Russia due to the size of an archipelago vs an entire continent! And Japanese are very mono-ethnic, with very few immigrants. so they'll be able to recover. But for Russia, what has to happen to such a country, that it's population is like in Japan? And similar to Japan and South Korea, most of the population have been herded into the cities. The Seoul effect. The govnmt have been shutting down schools, power lines, utilities, railroads, and other infrastructure in the rural areas, squeezing 90% of the people out, 10% live under Medieval conditions. Taking a page from Claus Shwab's handbook. All agriculture belongs to the corporations, and they hire goons to harass the peasants and keep them from getting competitive with the agro corps. They'll say, oh your cows are diseased, so they have to be taken away to slaughtered. That's why an entire continent is basically abandoned, with scattered post-apocalyptic remnants of the once great Russian civilization. It looks as if a war took place once upon a time there.
the genre. atompunk 1950 - 1970. Steampunk 1860- 1910. Diesel punk 1930- 150. Cassett future 1970-1990. Cyberpunk 2020 - 2100. All retro fictional future.
What about the style that takes the bright colored 1950s and 60s and places it with futuristic technology. Like an optimistic version of cyber punk.

"We live in a cyberpunk age" I hope not! Cyberpunk was meant as a warning. It's a dystopia, a future we shouldn't want to live in. The fact that its predictions are coming true should be terrifying because it means we're on the wrong path. The future we should be striving for is the Star Trek future where climate change is fixed and we have nearly magical technologies, and lots of greenspace, and the freedom to pursue any interest we want while never having to worry about things like money, or food, or housing. I've always been fascinated by cyberpunk and I really dig the aesthetic but I would be absolutely horrified if it all were to actually happen in real life. Cyberpunk is like watching a true crime show, fascinating and captivating to watch but I wouldn't ever want to actually live it.
The creation of the Cyberpunk aesthetic and genre was always going to bring about it’s own existence in the real world through the Barbra Streisand Effect and the sheer power of money and corporate greed
Well, with how the world is going, I wouldn’t be surprised if we are already at the forefront of that. Just, less gangs and crime and more cyber schmuck.
Star Trek future is a lie. It's communism in disguise.
having just watched the edgerunners series, the world of cyberpunk is terrifying. i would never wish those kinds of tragedies to happen on a daily level
@@anope9053 High tech, low life. We're heading into a reality just like it, the way we're going.
I like to say we are in the early stages of a cyberpunk world.
I would agree, imagine what the 22nd century would be like
@Till This Day i believe it is of utmost priority for the human race to find solutions to all the problems you mentioned to ensure that long-term progress is secured
@Till This Day this is almost like reading a prophecy after it happens
Welp let’s start our cyberpunk gang names here: Killer Kitsunes. Anyone else?
@@andrewblack2596 Id rather work for Public Security Section 9 or Carrington Institute than be in a gang.
So satisfying to watch a cyberpunk related video that goes beyond skimming the surface. Instant subscribe, THIS is what UA-cam is all about.
i had a hard time placing it but i've finally determined that cyberpunk is my favorite genre; i think that has as much to do with tonicity and aesthetic as it does with the frequent intertwining of the noir genre in its stories.
Saaaaame
@@Goldenxbih Not enough noir imo. So I'm writing it myself now :)
Cyberpunk 4Life😍
I just like the energetic night life with vibrant neon colors
Each year that passes the fiction is closer to reality, it is a bit scary and exciting at the same time. Very good video!! Do you read any cyberpunk book? Neuromancer?
Federico Nadur In ways yes! But we still have a ways to go.
I like Cyberpunk because is something that can be our reality
I've been trying to get into cyberpunk books, but I just haven't been able to. Ironically, the writing style itself is often not really my favorite. I got a good ways through neuromancer, but I just wasn't a fan of the writing. It felt like it was at times trying to appeal to emotions, and at others just be clinical and cold, but it didn't work. I liked the clinical way Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was written, even though it wasn't cyberpunk, and I liked the almost poetic and very emotion/morals based writing of Red Rising. I know those are like two polar extremes, but could anyone recommend me anything like that?
Yes, I realize how picky I am in my reading materials.

Note that some of the founders of the cyberpunk genre were cribbing the culture of technologists who were working on communications systems like the early Internet. Who then in turn were inspired by cyberpunk works. It shouldn't be too shocking to see today's Internet in cyberpunk; it is a mirror reflecting itself.
Awesome video man. Cyberpunk is my fav sci-fi genre as well :D
... but I wouldn't want to live there.
In my youth I loved cyberpunk genre and all things tech. Maybe it's do to age, wisdom or cynicism but I'm fast becoming a luddite, more interested in nature, animals and building human connections in the real time.
Me too, as a teenager I used to have an interest in cyberpunk, but now I see it for what it is, a corrupt, rotting, society perpetually on the brink of collapse, held together only by the crude duct tape of high technology, and the power of corporations which enables them to put everyone else into a state of permanent wage slavery. Cyberpunk 2077 is literally just one rung of the ladder above Fallout, which is a total post-apocalyptic society. And in fact towards the end of the Cyberpunk 2077 timeline it was heading for total collapse as well. The Deus Ex timeline either split into a totalitarian world like in 1984 or into a total collapse as well. We maybe seeing the same thing in our timeline too. It's just like Dubai, all the bright neon lights and hedonism are just a copium for the sorry state of "civilization" and all the brutality that goes on under the floorboards of cyberpunk. In fact it is a kind of Neo Bronze Age society, like Ancient Babylon, where only respected are the rich and powerful, and the ones who have muscles and brute strength, only with high technology. Even modern Hollywood celebrities worship Sumerian deities.
Cyberpunk has absolutely become a reality in South Korea
Amazing man! Finally someone who talks about the inherent real life politics of cyberpunk. I think it's all about what they saw in advance the "laissez faire" of neoliberalism was going to do in the long run: concentration of massive power in very few hands, and a contradictory consumist economy.
Thats the one thing about Cyberpunk I find fascinating: How so damn close it is to our reality and where its possibly going.
Actually, it’s far. And I’m saying the at as someone who has no high hopes for the future. Reality will always be a bore compared to the world of sci-fi.
Anyone else would love to live in a Cyberpunk world? Dark scene, almost no sun. Cyborgs, bright neon colors and music. All these combined just makes me want to live in a world like this!
I would love to live in a city like this looks so beutiful in my opinion
Austin Ward Agreed, just the aesthetics itself
that's a slippery slope. there are a lot of downsides to living in a cyberpunk environment. It looks cool because companies don't give a shit about human life. Have you consumed any media beyond just the surface? It's rife with political corruption, corporate greed, violent crime, and lots of other things that just lower the quality of life. Cybernetics look cool, but why would you want to be a cyborg? Isn't being human enough?
Cybernetics are invasive, made by the corporations that control the average person to spy on you in exchange for a little bit of a boost in power. That power wouldn't even be necessary if the powers that be didn't make it so violent crime was a justifiable alternative to working yourself to death.
If Google made a brain chip that connected you to the internet, would you implant it in yourself? If Microsoft and Samsung collaborated and made a cyborg arm that increase your punches power by 30x, would you cut your arm off for it? If Apple made Cyborg Eyes, would you replace yours? These are the kinds of questions that cyberpunk media is meant to make you ask yourself. You don't want to live in these kinds of lives because the quality of life is garbage. Why would I want to breath polluted air and fear of getting caught in the crossfire of a gang war and a police attack (Not that that fear isn't founded in IRL as well)
Cyberpunk is a distorted mirror of reality where consumerism and corporate greed take mainstage over the QoL of the average person. That is bed for everyone except the top of the Top.
Sorry for the rant, I just really like thinking about things like this.
The aesthetic is absolutely beautiful to me, its mesmerizing and becoming more scarily realistic. I would love to, but i have to remind myself it isnt onlt about the aesthetic but the genre itself. little to no privacy, maybe even pollution and bad weather and less clean air to breathe, being watched, very scary.
Hoping no damn corpo or high rank elite/politic ruin in.
I saw blade runner to late, and it was scary how many things that happened for real
Welcome to your tomorrow, today.
Bad ass line.
Ugh thank you for this video. I roleplay and have always been so interested in this genre but felt I didn't know enough to write well in the universe. I appreciate the information because you gave me to confidence to give it a shot. It looks so, so fun. An amazing story waiting to be written!
hey, comment from 2023, the future is already here, cyberpunk is just a hyperbole for our reality, is scary but amazing at the same time, its a matter of time a civil war happens, I'll come back to this comment in a few years (if possible).
Fritz Lang’s Metropolis is where cyber punk really began, however it was not called cyber punk, as well as having a positive ending.
I agree. We are in it. Self driving cars. Neuralink. Corporations silencing the president of the United States. Advertising within advertising on line. Digital money. Meta verse. Synthetic meat. Ai friends.
Even more clues: Shrinking and impoverishment of the middle class across the broad spectrum, except for IT employees. Advancement both technological and societal in Asian countries, and regression in the White countries. AI replacing some jobs. Big Agro Corporations taking over agriculture and food production. Big Pharma Corporations dictating people to get their mandatory medical treatments, or be deprived the ability to employment. Degeneracy, porn, feminism, and anti-family politics in Western countries. Drones on the battle field in Ukraine. People addicted to phones and video games and tiktok. People having a decreasing attention span and IQ. Mass scale brainwashing and spreading of mind viruses (memetic lifeforms) via social media. Boston Dynamics and other Corporations producing robotic soldiers. ChatGPT bots flooding the internet, writing articles, writing tweets, and also chatting with people on dating apps. Lots of scams, tricks, misinformation, and propoganda on the internet and in real life. Drugs, prostitution, poverty, homelessness, and vice in most countries except for China and Japan. Hikikomori culture, social isolation, and depression in South Korea, Japan, and China.
dont wanna be that guy but 1:48 is just wrong. The music has changed just in the same way the car has changed and a car is still recognized as a car.
The same way you bring up modernisation of the cars and clothes, one can describe how the electronic music has been modernised and changed from 80s to today. There's a modern sound (gear, composition, master/mix) to synthwave "today".
As you say yourself, it's deeply inspired.
I just think it's strange to not make the same connection with music as the other subjects.
Cyberpunk contains a lot of Marx criticism of capitalism and also marx predictions of the future. Keywords: Corporatism and estrangement (entfremdung).
We already living in a dystopia, might as well be a cool looking one
Corporations are the state
13 business owners disliked this
Being a business owner doesn't automatically make you a bad person. That is so black and white thinking. Owning a youtube channel that's is akin to being a business owner - the internet is changing the ability of the common person to be able to produce content.
@@MicahBuzanANIMATIONfinally, someone with a real brain here. I really hate how most people are so black & white on every subject, especially contrarians who are against status quo. No one really know how to think for themselves, & whoever disagrees with them is either another “sheep” or their “enemy.”
I also like to mention how a lot of people in the comment section of these videos are real idiots. While I don’t see a bright future, a lot of these “ know it alls” love to preach about how these sci-fi stories are “prophetic,” & how reality is coming closer & closer to these stories. No matter how bleak our future is, real life will never be as exciting or as meaningful as these sci-fi stories.
Very well constructed video! Well done!

Mr. Robot is not Cyberpunk. It's a commentary of before 2020. WE ARE LIVING IN MR. ROBOT
Are you ready for the future or is the future ready for you?
Thought provoking, enjoyed your work, so interesting
the original writers and content makers for the genre knew more about the fate of humanity then most people do today. heck their understanding of biology and science alone is staggering much less the cultural predictions.
A little thing i noticed you don't use a pop filter and speak too close to the mic. Don't speak directly into it, because when you say "p" you can hear a pop sound. But the video itself is great

Great video, nothin can be unreal at this point. Things we thought crazy in 20s came to reality in 50s same with 70s internet innovation and look at us today.. We just have to learn the lesson and never rule out something as being impossible its just matter of time of WHEN we do it.

Hi, I have a question. One of the pictures you showed had Cyberpunk Elves. I had that picture but lost it to a computer screw up. Where did you get it and what is the title?
@@aprilrichards762 What do you mean? whats the time stamp?
@@VirtualCarbon It's between 1::22 to 1:32. It's a still image and goes by fast.
@@aprilrichards762 OK so, after some research, I found that it's the cover art of the game Shadowrun on the genesis. Hope that helps pal.
@@VirtualCarbon Thank you so much! I never heard of the game but then again in 1989, I was still using my Commodore 64C. My only gaming console was the Atari 2600. But that picture was the first image that came up when I typed in Shadow run. Thank you again!
Cyberpunk is a genre, but it can exist in two vibes: Grimdark (we all know what that is) and Grimbright. The latter seems to have more overlap with Cyberpunk right now. But I wonder if somebody may one day pull off the feat of creating a grimbright fantasy setting (rather than a sci-fi one).
Would be cool to play a cyberpunk game set in a hive city in warhammer 40k and you upgrade your character into a space marine

I don't think "synth wave" have been connected with cyberpunk until recently. Personally I don't like it at all. More Miami Vice than CP. Originally it was more Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and the industrial movement. In the 90's more electronica, techno, rave... Synth wave is totally anemic.
we are the cyberpunks

I can’t think of a bleaker genre of fiction to bring into reality.

You could say we’re living in a cyberpunk world in a way. Just without the “cyber” part. But I think we’re slowly getting there
Yea we're getting there, 100%. Maybe we'll actually have implants in 2077, things are moving very fast and they are only getting faster

Welcome to the future
I wonder what the first piece of media to make the association between synth wave and the cyberpunk genre was?
How can one be both excited and terrified?
“Almost as if we’re already there, we just had to discover it” spine chilling 🥶
The visuals of the Dust of BR49 were certainly influenced by recent natural events, but the idea was already in the Blade Runner narrative as a result of WWT in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. there's a similar event in Cyberpunk Red (which the era is named after), but in the 80s interpretation, they were the result of nuclear fallout, another sign of the times. Still seems kinda prophetic, tho, don't it? just an evolved form of mankind's war with itself.
I just want to clarify that Demobaza is not techwear. Techwear is specifically about utilitarian clothing with technical features. Function over form. Demobaza is not utilitarian. It's just absolutely insane.
Cyberpunk is now but hell we have no freaking neon billboards or cyborgs lul
Just all the bad stuff like megacorps and global warming
Great video. Try speaking a bit further away from your microphone though so your voice has less of a sleepy tone.
Cyberpunk it’s not fiction it’s our future it’s a way of life
Cyberpunk isnt just fiction - yes - Its a warning not an endorsement.
Cyberpunk fiction not real obviously
you forgot to include one of the greatest cyberpunk games ever made: Deus Ex Mankind Divided. lol.

Legion is also a nice series.....
For me i like the neon 80s old school style of cyberpunk it has style to it just makes sense to me some of the new styles are just trying too much in my opinion your a cyberpunk a bladerunner edgerunners a hacker they all have their own style like i imagine a cyberpunk well have all this cyberware and cybernetic with a blue greenish neon leather type jackets with badass art on the back of jackest etc or the dusty look of a fallen deciding like bladeRunner with a neon dark full of ads megacity type stuff to the quick end of a rusty ghost of a shell of a city at its very end of its life rotting away type vibes etc but i do love mr.robot the literally beginning of a cyberpunk dystopia so but i am a cyberpunk junkie i love all things about cyberpunk media out there even though weird outfits that ppl made in fashion and don’t forget we edit: literally we have ar now ars always been in cyberpunk another way to immerse yourself with the internet crazy thing to think about i think we are in a cyberpunk dystopia anytime soon but we can get their but we are living in a certain dystopia but i can see going 3 ways either cyberpunk dystopia or drug & chemical enhancement route that we can just take a pill and completely changes you as you desired like having abnormal ability using shit like that and naturally evolving and changing on lifes according which is not far-fetched at all and we all get more better understanding of things with some cost to it if that makes sense
Sorry, but at CPR (Cyberpunkreview.com) we had a discussion at academic level, what is cyberpunk music. There is no definition what cyberpunk music is. Synthpop is not all. Anything can be cyberpunk music. Refering to the cyberpunk epos. I know / downloaded rap,metal./industrial/goth,etc music that i declare cyberpunk music. cyberpunk music is not defined. If you want to know more. look at the archives of the dead CPR website. no hard feelings. Just want to tell you more.
What movies are some of the scenes from?
I like the video, but I dont think that cyberpunk is about anti corporatism and pro statism. In most cyberpunk universes the state still exists, but in an even worse capacity than it exists now. Essentially, in almost every cyberpunk narative governments become mutated and vile corporations as they become more corrupted, and no government is free from this, esspecially the more socialist ones, that act no better or less abusive than the corporations if not more abusive because of their assuked right to rule. If you assume that the government, esspecially a socialist, society regulating one, will save you, then you lack the understanding that its already a puppet of the corporate state.
Yooooo

So in short Cyperpunk is real life in 2020
Yep, the social, economic and political concepts in the cyberpunk genre can be seen in our world today. We lack the technology side of it but even then if you start to analyse the tech closely you will realise that most of it isn’t that far fetched and that we already have a lot of it in our hands today or we will see it in the near future. The only thing we probably won’t get is the iconic 80s synthwave feel.
Cyberpunk is now - but for a different reason. It's divided into cyber and punk. That's because there are big differences between cyberpunk elements in the West and in the Far East. To say it bluntly: China is more "cyber", while America is more "punk" 😀
Can you please release the playlist for this video
1:55 so we're not gonna mention Dark-synth? Also retrowave is more closer to Outrun than it is to Cyberpunk.
EVERY THING U SEE IN THIS GAME IS BECOMING REALTY
Does cyberpunk genre necessarily have elements of the 80's? I had a discussion with this friend that said that, but i guess not..
You see, Watch Dogs legion has been shown to us, and it seems to be a more grounded version of cyberpunk. But Watch dogs doesn't have elements of the 80's in it, right?
There is no connection between Retro-futurism and Cyberpunk.
Some Cyberpunk work might look different, or pays homage to older work. but Cyberpunk had always been about a Dystopic or Oppressive future, which high tech meets low life.
