What to do in port on an Alaskan Cruise

  • We went on an Alaskan inside passage cruise and visited the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Haines, and Sitka. We did a combination of Royal Caribbean sponsored shore excursions and excursions that we found in our own internet research. We hope this is helpful for those of you considering an Alaskan cruise. FYI, we cruised with Royal Caribbean out of Vancouver, BC.

    The tip about the excursions and ports is a good one! With so many ships coming in I think they may have to switch which ports at the last minute. If you book with the ship, at least you know you are guaranteed to get to/from the ship on time.

    Very nice video. I'll be heading there the end of April for an 11 day cruise. I was there back in 1991 and I'm happy to be going back. Last time I went in August and it was chilly and rained every day! I didn't see the sun until the day before the cruise ended, Regardless of the weather, I'm sure it will be wonderful. Thanks again for posting this.

      Thank you! I think Alaska is one of the few places that you can never count on the weather to be what you think it will be. Enjoy your trip, I'd love to hear what the weather is like when you go in April.

      We cruised in July and the weather was all over the place. Talk to the cruise line about your friend's needs - they are very accommodating towards passengers special needs. Many passengers with mobility issues rented motorized scooters from the cruise line.

    Alaska is beautiful. The only downside for me was the "fakeness" of the towns you port in. Lots of jewelry stores sponsored by the cruise lines. Some towns have an air of actors playing a role for the tourists which I found odd. Whale watching and the beauty of Alaska was just amazing.

    • @RnRquicktrips

      I agree, the shopping has little to do with Alaska, and the cruise ships push hard to shop at those stores. For us the beauty of Alaska was getting outside the towns and seeing the beauty of nature.

    Thanks for sharing this nice video! We are going in September and we plan to visit Mendenhall glacier in Juneau too. Was it easy to get an Uber and did you just ordered your ride from the Uber app when you got to the port? We are thinking of booking a cab in advance but it would be more flexible if we can just use Uber on the spot, in case there's any changes to our port arrival/departure.

    • @RnRquicktrips
      @RnRquicktrips  2 роки тому

      Uber in Juneau was tricky. The wifi was poor and we had trouble using the app. We got lucky because an Uber driver was there dropping someone off and we were able to grab it. If you want to make sure you have a driver when you arrive you will probably want to order a cab.

    • @RnRquicktrips
      @RnRquicktrips  Рік тому

      It can be confusing. You can check your cruise ship's website to see what excursions they offer and book them in advance or go to www.shoreexcursionsgroup.com to look at excursions. They will help you with booking tours that will get you back to your ship on time. All of the ports that we visited had lovely things to do and see by just stepping off the ship, you don't always need to book an excursion to enjoy the port. Have a great cruise!

      That is true, we were planning on booking Holland America or Princess for that reason - they have priority over Alaskan routes. We ended up booking RC because we found they had the best price.

      Royal CHOSE not to go into Glacier Bay. They were in the bid for limited access to the National Park. There are strict environmental conditions, including not burning bunker fuel and using scrubbers. RCCL chose to not pursue the permits. You can make your own assumptions, but it sure looked like they weren't willing to clean up their operations for the time they would have been in Glacier Bay.
