Lively discussion. Such debates are needed around issues in the region. Thanks to Alex and the team for their insight.

Ogbodo, next time please do some research before talking about Enugu Airport, because Enugu Airport with 14 flights daily is currently the 4th busiest airport in Nigeria according to Flightradar24. You are slowly becoming Reuben Abati.

    • @eaglei2143
      @eaglei2143 День тому +1

14 flights a day in an airport isn't enough to sustain the airport financially/economically. The reality is that the only serious traffic airports in naija are abuja/lagos. Even those ones are not managed well. SE needs just one international quality airport for all our states to use if we are serious enough but clearly we have no collaboration so every state is doing things individually thereby getting such poor results in both quality of final job and high cost/ poor quality of maintainance, so SE rail is improbable due to lack of collaborative culture between states over decades.
Abia should build the airport even without federal help like Anambra did because federal govt will start doing tribal politics with it in the future. Look at Enugu airport runway, How much politics and stealing had been done with it every year, still uncompleted. The time it took to finish enugu runway by federal govt Anambra built their whole airport and put it in service.

Abia state is an economically viable state. Aba is a huge market. And also surrounded by states like river state. A cargo airport and international airport is required.

The airport is just for ego but not a good economic decision at the moment. Sam mbakwe and ebony airports are under utilised. He is right that the money should have been invested in a rail or better highway to the other airports to create access.

To other airports, where? My mum visits me or my sister almost on a quarterly basis. The major challenge we always have is who's gonna assist her boarding transport to ABA, cos she either uses the PH or Imo airports. Cos we don't have relatives in those states. Besides Abians travelling to other states to board flights, do you know how many people that comes to ABA on daily basis from the North, West, Cameron, etc.? You don't know how massive Aba markets are or probably you haven't been to ABA before. Comparing ABA to Ebonyi imagine that. Don't bother with what happens in my state focus on yours, after Otti is done, well know which state will be generating more IGR in the East

I think Alex Ogbodo is not a sound analyst or journalist. From his conversation, his talks are just plain without intellectual capability. He continued saying there are many things to be done in Abia, then mention one thing that needs to be done.

There is a need for an airport in every state in the south east , the south east is depopulating so fast, so an airport is needed to make people mobile by living in abia and doing business at Lagos , with a city around the airport is the way forward,

Look at it this way - I have lived in the US for more than 40yrs. Capital projects like an Airport are usually not executed based on what is needed right now. They are planned based on expected growth and opportunity. The reason we are even arguing about the viability of this airport is because of this anomaly where a people (the IGBOs) that make up more than 60% of flying passengers do not reside in their home states. Yes, there may not be the expected passenger volume at this time because the middle class that drive the economy of every nation has been hollowed out in Nigeria, but it's not expected to remain so, it must certainly bounce back. Remember too, that Igboland is land starved, so if you believe that Aba is on her way back with a vibrant middle class which is a certainty, and that if you wait for another 5-10 years to build a befitting airport, it will cost you a fortune then because it must then involve the demolition of many structures for lack of land. In many urban centers in the world with vibrant middle class, it's not uncommon to see 2-4 international airports within a 30 mile radius - New York/New Jercey, Baltimore/Washington corridors in the US are examples.

As an Asian I can tell you we need an airport, how can I travel to another state to fly?
The airport will increase the value of houses, lands, hotels and even retail stores in the area.
Abis state has over 6 M population and you think we don't need an airport?
Anuja, Lagos airport are congested because that's where anyone who wants to fly abroad have to go, sleep over and probably do shopping there and all that money goes to the state.
      Get sense

We do not need an airport. It’s not a viable venture. It will also deprive the owners of the land their only means of livelihood. The government doesn’t seem to care about how these villagers will survive when you deprive them of their only means of livelihood. Paying or settling them with money is not an option.

Abia needed an airport as of yesterday.
    1. FG is building the airport, Abia is only supporting
    2. Aba produces lots of goods in the SE, so the airport will not only serve passengers but serve goods movement
    3. Airport will open the development in that area and bring more investors to the state.
It's just unfortunate people come on TV amd talk rubbish

There is an airport in Nassarawa and Dutse that people don’t fly into but their gov made arguments for its viability too

Chief spoke very eloquently, just as Otti did pre-2023 election, about Abia not needing an Airport for the foreseeable future, as there were other priorities, before doing an about-face like most politicians, on assuming office
Nathalie has now proven beyond reasonable doubt that she's biased; in Otti's pocket, by this shameful display
As for Otti recently claiming this is a FG project, where Abia is only providing support i.e land, & not financing for the Airport, if proven to be true in the fullness of time, would be a welcome development. But this wasn't what he said when he initially announced this full-throated airport project back in January.
Having watched Otti for over 18 months in office, it's clear he has a challenge with truth-telling
In the meantime, Otti should return the land previously acquired for this same Airport projects (not paid for, if as claimed by indegenes, is accurate)

These South East governors are confused by wanting to build an airport that is for no economic benefit to the State.
Why is the South East governors rushing to build an airport?
Honestly it’s not just adding up.
I agree with the Speaker completely , the governors of the South Eastern states need the railroad infrastructure.

I like Alex Otti’s administration so far, but the Owerri Airport is not that far away. It probably takes less time to go from Aba or Umuahia to Sam Mbakwe Airport than from Lekki to MMA Ikeja! It’s about PRIORITIES.
