Pilot here. Becoming a commercial airline pilot isn’t as simple as just deciding to fly. It requires thousands of flight hours, rigorous training, and continuous testing to meet the high standards set by airlines like Delta or American Airlines. Unlike many other professions, pilots must regularly undergo re-evaluations to ensure their skills remain sharp.
The idea that airlines are hiring unqualified pilots based solely on diversity initiatives is simply false. Every commercial pilot, regardless of background, must meet strict certification requirements and log extensive flight hours before being considered for the job. The misconception that someone can bypass these requirements just because of DEI efforts is not only inaccurate but undermines the dedication and expertise required to fly professionally.

Not true nowadays. After firing or making a lot of pilots quit during covid, they had to get those numbers back somehow. Hiring less qualified people who were dumb enough to get an experimental covid flu shot.

FAA DEI practices were in place since before 2013 and there has never been a midair collision for over 16 years, almost the same amount of time, and days after Trump gets in office and fired the head of the FAA and fired FAA security officers in an already understaffed industry, this crash happened. We and you know the reasons for the crash, but they are trying to use this to blame diversity which is a completely illogical nonsequitur. Repeating something continuously doesn’t make it true.
@@lightingbolt8148 DEI doesn't really apply for a pilot since you have to pass certain criteria to be come a pilot. So regardless of whether a pilot is a DEI hire or not they will be qualified. Kind of like a doctor.

Have applied to more than 100 federal jobs. At no point during the application or hiring process was I ever forced to disclose my skin color. There's an optional questionnaire not associated with your candidacy that asks you demographic questions including race/ethnicity but you don't have to answer it. Also, people can see you during the interview, so I guess there's that? I've also served on a federal interview panel and we rate candidates based on their answers to specific questions about their experience related to the skills needed for the job, not anything related to their race or ethnicity. In fact, we are required to take a training before we are eligible to be on the panel which tells us that asking a candidate questions about protected characteristics such as race/ethnicity are prohibited, and generally to avoid questions not directly related to the skills needed for the job. I never rated anyone differently based on their race or ethnicity.
All that sounds cool and all, but there are racial preferences in private and governmental hiring. Lets not play dumb here. Progressives wouldn't start screaming when you criticize affirmative action if that wasn't the case.
Of course not, and the whole point of DEI is that good people don’t get disqualified because of their race or gender, which used to happen a lot, not that a white person should be denied a job over a minority person just because they are a minority person.
Go read the FAA lawsuit. The way they make it happen sometimes is sneaky. In 2010 they threw in a biographical test before the prior competency test first. They prioritized candidates for ex failing history or poltical science and playing more than 4 sports in High School by giving that 20 pts combined, while having a pilot's license and literal ATC experience in the military only 2 pts. As a result, from 2010 until 2018 (when the bio test was outlawed) 1000 CTI College Initiative ATC candidates were unable to compete for the jobs because they couldn't get past the biographical test. According to a 2023 DOT Inspector report at 310 of 313 facilities they are understaffed, some nearly by fifty percent. So how are 1000 candidates suing for having their career paths and lives derailed while this is the case? Also, in 2010 ATSAP went into full effect, through union efforts, making it impossible to punitively punish ATC's for too many close calls. No more decertifying and retraining, only looking at "systemic issues". Well how did that go considering the near one-hundred percent understaffing rate?
In 2023 Times reported about 300 close-call reports in the Aviation Safety Reporting System in the last 12 months. In Dec of last year a conservative outlet put out a doc that reported 3 per week. An improvement sure, but look at the examples, which includes an atrocious one at Reagan in April 2024, telling a plane to go onto a runway in front of a taking off plane, and another plane coming within 100 ft of landing on top of another in Austin it's clear the long-term effects of prioritizing identity correlated facts rather than competency along with even more mismanagement is the cause of conditions ripe for disaster.
Just found out during Biden they passed on over 3000 perfect scorers on the ATSAT, because they wanted to diversify the workplace. Altogether they passed on 6000 qualified, while the industry is said to be short 1000 to 2000 ATC's.
Also the biographical test was started in 2014 and discontinued in 2018 though obviously the initiative continued.
@@PiccoloTulip some of that going around the internet is a bit inaccurate. It was actually when Biden was VP 2009-2017 . The case is Brigida v U.S. Department of Transportation. According to the press releases and case complaints, there were allegations of 2500 qualified (not all perfect, some sure, but not all) being purged and plotted against for diverse candidates by the FAA Human Resources and another organization representing minorities. Hope that helps. Oh, and most outlets report a shortage of 3000 or more. And it's been that way for years. Makes sense when you freeze the plan for hiring a thousands per year then start rejecting applicants for identity reasons by the thousands. It has a lasting effect to this day bc it derailed people's lives who were set to enter that workforce but couldn't because politics.

When hiring was done based on skin color, its something that needs to be talked about.
@@tomb7942 But they are held to the same standard. People are always saying "I hope the best guy for the job gets the job." That's never been how it works, and that's fine. It's always been "The guy who comes first and meets every qualification will get the job." People of color, especially pilots, are not held to a different standard. If a white guy applies and meets every standard that they're looking for, he'll get the job, and if it's a black guy, it's the same thing.
If you notably underperform in one area, you're still going to lose your job to the guy who satisfies their expectations, the diversity quota has no impact on quality of personnel. From a business perspective, they're paid the same and will have equal demands. The idea of a quota is to ensure that they can't afford to turn away pilots from races they don't like, irrespective of their qualities. Please understand that it's a matter of basic workers rights and not something that could compromise safety in the meager extent it was practiced up until today.

And they do! DEI does not absolve pilots from needing to know how to fly a plane. If anything, if you see a woman or a person of color in the cockpit you should know they had to fight that much harder to get there.

The reason is every tragedy brings addition problems to the forefront. Always. When a crime is committed people talking about problems with police work, insufficient laws and regulations, increase in criminal activity in the area locally and in the country overall. When railcar goes off the rails and leads to loss of life - people bring about the issues with railroads: insufficient maintenance, railroad construction quality, people following the road rules and regulations, etc.
This tragedy brought about the issues with hiring practices lately, when airlines openly boasted about aiming at diversity hiring opposed to level of skill, preparedness of the pilots. It didn’t come from nowhere. United Airlines just recently proudly announced these hiring goals. So yes, issues come out. It’s inevitable. The sad part - society and the government tend to focus on problematic issues a lot more closely when something very bad happens. A skilled pilot or a traffic controller should not be turned away simply because his or her skin color does not fit the diversity agenda and quota.
In this line of work the only two aspects have to be addressed when hiring - level of skill of pilots and traffic controllers and their health fitness for the job. Lives depend on these two aspects. I don’t know what type of medical evaluations these two professions undergo when hiring and during their work, but in most countries medical norms are also pivotal - checking the medical state of pilots and traffic controllers prior every flight or every shift.
This is “WHY”. Tragedies inevitably bring out the issues. It is only sad that the issues only become so urgent after tragic losses.
Korean flight shot down over USSR brought about and resulted in significant changes in the design and work of the autopilot navigation systems, among other things. To this day it is not clear whether pilots were even aware (I mean not clear to the public. FAA and military may know) how deep in a foreign airspace the autopilot brought them in. And still not clear why the pilots refused radio and visual contact. Result - 269 perished souls and thousands of grieving family members. But the issue was investigated and resolved by the plane manufacturer.
Pure tragedy.
I hope this makes sense to you how even overall issues within the industries can come to the forefront after tragic events, even if they were not a part of the specific tragedy.
Because Trump said DEI was responsible for the crash during his rambling, and people latched onto it because they love any excuse to be hateful. Lots of people going full, mask-off racist/sexist/homophobe these days.

I'm a frequent traveler, and I dont feel the need to check the skin color of anyone I encounter from the time I leave my home to get to my vacation destination and then on my return home. Im trusting that whoever is checking me in, scanning my ticket, going over safety guidelines, flying me, retrieving my luggage from the plane, and driving me to/from my stay is a competent being.
My cousin is a commercial pilot and though I haven't had the opportunity to fly with him just yet, I'd be f*cking happy and proud of him because he's my family, not because he's black!

285 of 313 facilities nationwide understaffed. Short 3000 controllers. In 2012 to 2014 they were supposed to hire a thousand controllers per year, but slowed then froze hiring, then implemented a biographical test that blocked out qualified candidates even if they scored perfect on the ATSAT because they were not diverse enough. Brigida v U.S. Department of Transportation in Nov 2019 had 2500 plaintiffs whose claim is they were not allowed to compete for the position due to that. Biographical test gave 15 pts for failing history or political science, 5 pts for playing 4 or more sports in high school, and only 2 pts for having a pilot's license and ZERO pts for actual ATC experience in the military. It was designed to block out certain people due to correlations with those answers. Worse yet, the claim also is FAA human resources conspired with a diversity group organization to purge the roll and not offer them letter for hire that came from the College Initiative Program that was the pipeline for new ATCs since the 70s, as well as the diversity group org giving their group the answers to the biographical test as well. Just look up the case and read the complaints. Today it is a class action lawsuit with 975 plaintiffs, presumably in some cases because the biographical was suspended in 2018 so some reapplied and today are controllers. Still, look at the remaining number and the current shortage that has been the case ever since 2012 essentially, and how it has had a tremendous negative impact on safety. Fyi, there have been MANY close calls in recent years, to the point at one time they changed the rule to enforce more time between shifts. You think maybe not blocking out thousands of people because they weren't diverse enough might've helped prevent that? YES. So THAT is the context of what is being discussed.
There is another video released today of the accident showing the plane with it's landing lights on and the helicopter continuing into it's path. The helicopter did not yield and flewright into the path of the airplane. How does this relate to DEI?

Every Air Traffic controller has to be certified regardless of background. You don't pass, you don't qualify. I have family that are ATC. Both prior Airforce, hispanic, one male one female, and they had to take FAA certifications before they were able to work as ATC for he FAA. DEI or not, you have to qualify for that position.

The problem is staffing shortage. I had two flights cancelled back to back this summer because they did not have enough ATC at Newark. You cannot become an air traffic controller after the age of 31 because max retirement age is 56 and to get a government pension you have to work for the government for 25 years. So if they lowered the standards its because of low recruitment and stupid rules that make the majority of the population ineligible to work the job. How about allowing people become an ATC after 31 and put them on a 401k. Change the things that will actually solve the problem instead of screaming about DEI that had nothing to do with this.

This isn’t a DEI issue. One has nothing to do with the other. They should investigate first and find out what EXACTLY happened. Then report on those findings. Right now we should be focusing on the innocent people who lost their lives and their families who be greatly affected by the tragedy as well. No matter the findings it is still a great tragedy for these families and shouldn’t be turned into something political before a fact finding investigation is completed and the families are given closure on what happed to their loved ones. Let us not forget that we are speaking about someone’s beloved mother,grandmother,daughter,wife,father,grandfather, son, and husband .Praying for the families who lost loved ones , I couldn’t imagine losing someone I love in this way❤

We know the answer to that question. There has been a lawsuit working it's way through the courts for years representing about 2500 air traffic controllers (look it up) who could not get jobs due to their race. When you don't hire qualified people because you want to save that spot for a certain demographic you get shortages.

Not that it makes a bit of difference, but I’d be willing to bet that both pilots and the lone air traffic controller were white males with no disabilities. I say that because I fly a lot and that is what I mostly observe. You can kind of tell by the voices in the recording of the conversation with air traffic control, too. So that basically cancels her whole point. She might say there was only one air traffic controller because of DI requirements which is, of course, ridiculous. No airport is going to suffer a shortage of air traffic controllers just because they didn’t receive enough applicants in diversity categories but did receive able white male applicants who met the qualifications yet were turned away. That has never happened. The people who have always screamed the loudest about diversity & inclusion have been incompetent and unqualified white men who maybe lost out on a job to which they felt entitled to a person of color, woman, etc. They can’t accept that they simply weren’t qualified because their race, whiteness, etc. not to mention somewhat bigoted cultural milieu and upbringing led them to grow up feeling entitled to something great without doing much work.

This takes zero common sense to understand. They named all but one pilot in the tragedy on the news. That unnamed pilot was a DEI hire transgender that the DAY before, had posted about gender dysphoria and suicide. This is not someone with the competence to fly a plane let alone a military helicopter.

I would love for these people to realize that they keep implying that "DEI hires" don't study the same way the "standard" hires do. I want to see the evidence that people of a certain group do not have the same qualifications as the others. Because last I checked, I took the same tests to graduate high school as anyone else, but maybe I shouldn't have gotten my diploma because I'm Black? What I hear when they say Doctors and pilots and teachers are doing a poor job because they're DEI, I hear that they didn't pass exams to get their licenses as everyone else, they just walked into the room and demanded a job because they were a minority or female.

Dei was literally made to combat racism and sexism in the workplace. People who have the qualities to get the job were looked over because of nepotism and racism. It's amazing this day and age . Years ago I had medical emergency and went to hospital emergency room with severe abdominal pain and unable to eat or keep fluids down.. I was literally dying from poison and a blocked liver duct and bio ducts plugged from 5 gallbladder stones blocking all my ducts... I was diagnosed initially with stomach inflammation and gas or gerd.. a second doctor said the same thing as I laid there in pain I couldn't believe they didn't admit me.. I was literally crying in pain and I'm tough construction worker.... They finally gave me pain meds that barley touched the pain after 1 hour... And said they were going to release me to go home... I couldn't believe it.. I said I'm going to die and not make it back.. a third doctor came to see me a American Chinese doctor and ordered a ultra sound and reassured I'm not going home till we figure this out... Both the first 2 doctors were white. Immediately things moved fast and within 30 minutes I was in emergency surgery. He literally saved my life as he did the surgery.... Another part the after care was horrid and yes white nurses that nurses that cared more about their looks then taking care of me.... Yup.. I had Filipina nurse that went beyond service and cared for me 20 fold never forgot this 35 years latter. The attending physician that saved me life slammed his clip board on the counter and I heard him say I can't believe you were going to discharge this patient....

I can usually roll with the crowd and write off Trump's lack of normal human emotions as eccentricity. It's moments like these though when the nation is in shock, or mourning, or honoring our vets or our fallen, and America's leader can't muster basic human decency, when I realize how low we've sunk.
