Hi, Tim! I'm originally from Palm Bay, FL, and my parents moved to Melbourne Beach just across the Indian River only 4 years ago. I was overseas when the pandemic started, so I had to go home and live with my parents for a few months starting in March 2020. You are right to say that it's a sundown town. There is hardly any diversity, and it is a very politically conservative and closed-off area. As a white person who was a part of this community for a few months, I heard a lot that people most likely felt comfortable saying in front of me, but I doubt they would say things in front of a person of color. A lot of Americans get mad and defensive when someone mentions that what they say is racist, but I heard enough, and I truly believe that racism runs rampant in this area. Of course, not everyone is racist, but I don't blame you for not wanting to get out of the car and go inside a restaurant. It's a shame because it's a beautiful place, and I enjoyed being stuck there during COVID because I could walk around freely outside and enjoy the fresh air. It was just frustrating when I had actual conversations with people because I didn't align myself with the local culture, and I decided to leave after some time.
Thanks for watching and thank you for sharing your experiences, and it's commendable that you've reflected on these important issues.Your observation about people feeling comfortable saying certain things in front of you as a white person is quite telling. Promoting inclusivity and understanding in communities is essential. And If you google sundown towns in Florida, Melbourne Beach Pops up.
I'm not surprised that Melbourne Beach would pop up as a sundown town! I never labeled it as that because I never really thought about it, but I did have a discussion with my mom, and I told her how shocked I was that the culture was so different in Melbourne Beach compared to Palm Bay and it was just across the water. Not that Palm Bay was really progressive or anything that is telling about Melbourne Beach. 😂 I found your video to be interesting and especially because you mentioned that everyone you saw was white. I should show this to my mom when I'm home! Thanks for creating this and being honest! @@TIMJMEANSBUSINESS
These types of video's you make are my favorite. Sometimes i’ll put them on when I'm working or i’ll fall asleep to them lol. thanks for these, they’re much appreciated! 🤩
You might also warn them that getting homeowner's insurance is like pulling teeth. Policies are getting cancelled and everyone's premiums raised by at least $1,000 per year. And that's ALL of Florida, not just Mel Beach. It's crisis proportions.
Blacks weren’t aloud to go on certain parts of the beach, so we stayed on the river. We’re blacks had no problem camping fishing and celebrating holidays, up until the 80s they changed the river, we no longer can swim with the rocks they put in place. But the river is so polluted and dirty the people in charge even the governor’s past and now have done nothing. Only when Covid hit it started to clear up once was beautiful now destroyed

Wasn't it a sundown town?
Today, I don't think so. But from the stories I hear, It use to be.
I feel the same way. I wouldn't want to be the only black person either lol 😂🤣
