I was in attendance for the Aqualung tour and he actually did open the show with pretty much this version of My God. He began in the dark with his acoustic guitar and then they threw a spot on him. Then one at a time the rest of the band joined Ian on stage and joined in. It was absolutely amazing. At the end they faded away with a version of Wind Up and finished with Ian alone on stage with a spot on him as he faded out. I'll never forget that show.
Saw Tull seven times between '76 and '83 and somewhere in the middle we saw them at the Forum in LA. They booked two shows Fri and Saturday and because they sold out so quickly, they booked Sunday at the Long Beach Arena (all acoustics) and began with My God. I'll never forget that night. Tull is my all time favorite band.
What an amazing version of a hell of a song.!! Tull at their best!! Ian Anderson and the gang are absolutely awesome.!! I love the jazz improvising through out the song . Thanks for uploading this Masterpiece.!!!
Anderson nell'olimpo della rock music. un vero portento del progressive. Grazie per la tua musica, sarai ricordato come i grandi musicisti classici del passato.
Michael McLoughlin I liked 'Tull from the start. When Aqualung came out I couldn't believe it. Ian Anderson is a genius-he's still going. Not many from back then are-may he go on forever.
No it was the then current band re circa Tull 93 during the 14 year tenure of Dave Pegg who left in 94. They re recorded alot of their classic tracks, this being one of them. As to this Enos' commentary down the row, clearly a man who has not seen Tull in concert or was too stoned to remember as God Rest Ye has been part of My God's live performance dating back to the Thick as a Brick tour. If Ian Anderson had ever played it by any of his classic rock or prog fans book there never would have been a Jethro Tull. Period. Dude sort of reminds me of that scene in Braveheart where Longshanks, the King of England is offered advice as to what to do with the marauding Scots hordes who have just sacked York by a less than experienced friend of his son. Yes son, do tell Ian Anderson how its done.
This is an excellent version! I like Anderson's humor on the flute as much as I like the brilliant musicianship. Until I read the comments below, I was a little puzzled as to what year this could have been. It was obviously an outgrowth of the Bursting Out era, but considering the playing styles and Anderson's voice, which was starting to go although still very good here, it was hard to place. So it seems this is vintage early 90's- a little past the departure of my favorite Tull keyboardist John Evan but still excellent playing of the ivories (Andrew Giddings, perhaps?).
never heard this version only the first release one all those Christmas,s ago my memory is fading but what album was it from? First time I heard My God it was an omg moment had never heard anything like it played the grooves out of my record on a crappy wee portable record player, the radio used to adverise Tull I think it may have been TAAB but used to hear Inside played many times on the radio what a breath of fresk air now at 70 still love jethro Tull
My God/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (in the middle flute break), is a better name for this one. What year was this? Is that Barry Barlowe on drums or Doane Perry?
la parola "progressive"se la sono inventata molti anni dopo ,pensando di "seppellire "una stagione irripetibile ma probalmente si sbagliavano di grosso..
George Wilson- That's Jethro Bodine. Jethro Tull, the band, was named after an English agronomist, agriculturist, writer, and inventor of the same name born in 1674.
@@jesstowns10 Tull, the agronomist, had a cousin named Eleanor, whom they called Elly, who displayed a deep love for animals. In addition to the seed drill, Tull was the inventor of a device used for joining two pieces of steel together, called “The Clamp-It”, which was distributed by one Mr. Drysdale of Hathaway Distributors.
Why the hell would you want to ruin this fantastic track by sticking God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen in the bloody middle.... Destroyed the whole fucking atmosphere... It's the same as when these old famous and semi-famous singers are on stage and someone applauds at a certain point during the song and the singer stops to say " Aw Thankyou So Much, You're All So Very Kind " in a smarmy fucking voice... So, I'll stick to my original Aqualung version of this classic and Ian can get stuffed.
I don't like the wording, but EnosEverything has a point. This could have been the definitive version of the song without winding it down to God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen in the middle. I don't like most of Anderson's not yet defined singing styles before 1972, so for me the best version is to be found on Aqualung Live (2005).
I'm pretty sure they were including the God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen bit as early as the Stormwatch tour in 1979...maybe even earlier (which as far as I'm concerned was their heyday) so this isn't something Ian Anderson only came up with in the '90s...I should add that I love this and pretty much every version of this song I've ever heard.

Such amazingly timeless and beautiful music
Ian Anderson, the magic flute, the puss in boots, the minstrel of Rock. An indisputable musical genius

Barre's guitar licks and Ian's flutework is totally outstanding. A fan since late 69.
Same here

Sancho Retáblez this version is quite unique was it even live I don't know thank you

ray brettman You are the Jethro's living encyclopedia ahahah
This is still today the most cognizant response to the evangelical church of gop money worship! Never Ever GOP Again!
Lovely! Thanks for this. Beautiful version, reminding me of when I first used to see Tull.

Pretty sure Barrie had long since moved on from Tull at this point. This was from the early 90's.
👍❤️👍
This definitely isn’t old. His vocals are starting to decline on it. Anyway it’s way after 1970. This was a song they did before Aqualung
That is correct, the bad Voice is from after 1984, when the Voice got bad.
I am very sad. ❤️ Greetings a great Fan from Berlin. ❤️ 🎸
This is from 1993!! Thanks.
This is from the early 90s most likely, he has that catfish rising tone
Jesus FUCKING Christ!! This is way better than original one..
la parola "progressive"se la sono inventata molti anni dopo ,pensando di "seppellire "una stagione irripetibile ma probalmente si sbagliavano di grosso..
Contact s must be met ,o well.
Thought Jethro Tull was one of the Beverly hillbillies
Hi there got anything interesting to say
That was Jethro Bodine. Double-nought spy.

EnosEverything I prefer this version than the original

jethro tull's god rest ye merry gentlemen is a masterpiece

@@oafratos I agree with you it's a masterpiece
