    The Cane Corso was developed in Italy to guard property and hunt big game such as wild boar. Today this breed is an athletic and powerful dog that performs several jobs on and off the farm. In addition the breed performs at high levels in various dog sports such as lure coursing, protection work, and tracking. If you are considering a Cane Corso as your next pet, here are five things you should know.
    5. Due to the fact that a lot of the breeds farm work was made obsolete because of machines. The breed neared extinction in the 1970s. In 1983 a society of cane corso lovers was formed, to reestablish the breed.
    4. Go easy on young dogs. Their musculoskeletal system isn’t fully developed until they are roughly 18 months old. They will need walks to control and burn offf their puppy energy, those walks should be shorter and slower. In addition vigorous running and jumping should be avoided, until the dog has reached full physical maturtiy.
    3. The Cane Corso is a generally healthy breed however, there are some disorders that occur in the breed. Before buying a pup make sure the parents have had their eyes and hips examined. Eye exams are performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist and the hips are examined by OFA , the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.
    2. The cane corso is a highly intelligent dog. In combination with his dominant personality and supreme confidence, the Cane Corso can be a challenging breed to own. He will test the limits of your resolve, so it is important that you remain consistent and insistent when it comes to the boundaries you set forth.
    1. This breed needs a firm leader. But hitting or intimidating as Cane Corso is not a great strategy. Any violence can send the wrong message and can be dangerous when dealing with such a large and powerful dog. As stated earlier the breed is highly intelligent and because they are equally as sensitive, they respond well to praise and rewards. So reward and praise behavior you want as opposed to yelling and hitting in response to behavior you don’t want. With a confident, consistent owner who provides good leadership and appropriate corrections, the Corso can be an excellent family dog who is never inappropriately aggressive.
    There you have it five good things anyone considering owning a cane corso should know.

      Serrah Lowe thank you man, I was only able to handle my cane corso at 15 because she came to us at the age of 6. So she was well matured and mannered by then, I don't think I would of be able to handle a young cane corso as a teenager.

      Truthful guy Santana why not. we got my English cane Corso about an year ago. he's 2 and half now. I'm 16 now. he's more then a handful but to me he's just like another sibling that loves to rough Hassel and play . ALOT. all the time. but he knows how to be gentle. u can put ur arm in hes huge mouth and he will just nibble on it. he will literally run around the house with hes huge bone playing keep away by himself XD

    The most amazing breed, IMO. The ones that come from working lines are almost a different species altogether. They've been nearly gigantized in the US, but working lines from Sicily/breeders maintaining old world bloodlines for work are some of the most agile dogs I've ever seen. My young male is about 110 and I don't expect him to get much larger, but he moves almost like a Malinois. His drive is comparable to a Mal, too.
    These guys are special, special dogs. They have a naturally high baseline level of aggression/territoriality, and are very suspicious/aloof if they don't know you, typically. Combined with a high prey drive and Chimp like intelligence, this makes them exceptionally dangerous if they don't have an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and assertive owner. They were bred to patrol the perimeter of farms in Sicily and aggressively engage intruders autonomously. This means they have a powerful instinct to move forward aggressively on their own; they're not inclined to look to their handler for permission or direction to attack. Herding breeds like Mals and GSDs mainly work off of predatory aggression, and have worked directly alongside human beings for centuries. The Corso is more like a highly territorial lone wolf with excellent hunting skills. They are exceptionally loyal and bond intensely with their families, but their territorial instinct/affective aggression can be like a Lab's instinct to a retrieve or a border collie's desire to herd. The challenging part of owning one of these dogs is to channel these drives as well as firmly correct maladaptive behavior without sucking out the soul of the dog. If aggression is a huge part of a particular breed or individual dog, how much dog is left if you fully extinguish the aggression? Socialize them laboriously, methodically, and intelligently with people from an early age; provide them with hyper consistency and leadership; and work them really hard. If they are high drive and/or more aggressive, channel their drives through bitework, as well as rigorous obedience and agility work. You will only get out of these guys what you put into them, but if you're motivated and give them what they need, they truly are one of the absolute best dogs to own due to their sometimes shocking intelligence and highly idiosyncratic nature.
    Great video.

      Sean Ryan. It ain't a cane corso you describe!! If it is its the product of the owners personal preference.
      My cane corso advice on what it suppose are danger by barking on the adresse. Else it embrace everybody we meet, it has no experience that its a poor choice.
      The owner can spoil the dog. The owner have a great responsibility to affect the nature of the dog. Cause it has a nature and a drive. But as with kids they have to be tought whats right and wrong. And they can be. The advice in the video are very good. The part about age-size-running are very important. They grow so fast the first 5 month that they have a problem supporting their weight. Lack of mucle power and fragile joints. So take care!!

    I cant stress enough with this breed, being CONSISTENT and constant with the training is VERY important and not to be taken lightly, my sister's husband has this dog and even with all the extensive training as a puppy, due to lack of upkeep on his part the dog has gotten more and more aggressive and unpredictable, to the point where we recently suffered a tragedy in our house because of it. They now have to accept the reality they were in denial of that its no longer safe to keep him. It's sad because its not the dog or the breeds fault, its is the selfish owner. DO ALL OF YOUR RESEARCH AND MAKE SURE YOU CAN HANDLE THIS TYPE OF DOG BEFORE YOU GET ONE.

    I bought my first Cane Corso 6 weeks ago. he is now 15 weeks and is an amazing puppy! highly intelligent so house breaking has been pretty easy. He has only pooped in the house once, and hasn't peed inside in over a week!! He is the biggest pup out of his litter and is an alpha male. I wouldn't recommend this dog to a human with a submissive disposition. My puppy tries to challenge me in little ways all the time. I've owned GSD, pits, and American bulldogs in my life and this puppy is at the top when it comes to intelligence at this early age. I'm looking forward to joining a local working dog club and getting him titled.

    I know they say about every breed with the hitting or harsh corrections. I feel the Corso is particularly sensitive to that they seem to shut down very quickly more so than others. Been breeding them a while now and am blown away them though there ability to be a nanny breed and protector at the same time Is second to absolutely none.

      Armando Estrada Be firm on your house rules, socialization. my first corso we later found out came from aggressive parents. we brought him with everywhere but all of a sudden he wouldn't let anyone other then a select few touch him. if you see a problem get help right away.

      +Rebecca Lieder) the only issue I see that he's got is that he's real scared of people and sometimes even me. I don't know if it's because of the change of the environment because he came from the city out into the middle of nowhere basically the desert.

    • @becky5565

      our new boy isn't scared of us but our black lab barks at everything and doesn't like other. meaning he doesn't let alot of peiple pet him so our corso backs up from people also. we just make sure he sees and greets everyone that comes over.

    • @becky5565
      @becky5565 7 років тому +3

      Maybe they spanked him for bad behavior. with the first one physical punishment only made him mad. the new puppy is sad if we hit him and then bad away from us for awhile so we stopped that and use positive reinforcement now. seems to be working so far.

    I work away half the year. I’m entertaining getting a Cane Corso for my family while I’m away. Are they good family dogs? I have a 9 yr old and a 4 yr old.

    They need to be close to theyre familiy also, they become a threath when kept to a chain or whatever. They are very similar to a rottweiler in many ways. But mentaly wise have a leaning More towards a great dane.

      LoyaltyAboveAllLaws They are not like Rotts in many ways..Rotts are not even tempered and kill their owners

      had 3 rotts when i was a kid, all trained, im still here!! but that being said i dont trust other peoples rottie...or pitts..or german shepherds...they can all be problematic without proper training

    Im from Napoli and I remember the Cane Corso was bigger than the ones in this video, they look to me like they're shorter,less robust and with a smaller head.Hopefully this is not another American experiment in order to make this race of dogs more suitable to live in apartment. Some of them they look like bloody Boxers.

    Would any Cane Corso owner have a website on best ways to train this beautiful breed from puppies?

    • @mcdk72
      @mcdk72 7 років тому

      14danray Join puppy dog training. It give social benefits and a little training. Dont train a poppy hard It has to be 6 month+ to have a mature enog brain to comprehend expectations. The best you can give are contact, play, lots of affektion and in a proper way sign you are the boss. It training of life.

    The main irritating thing of today's dogs world to me is the structure of dogs,we are breeding dogs to increase their bulk and weight to make their looks more bulky and attractive but the worst thing in this is we are ignoring the structure of dog,many breeds specially massives are seen that they have no top line their back after the neck is too down and then at the hind legs they are higher. I don't think that the structure of a athletic and working dog have to be like this.
