  • We suffer because of our attachment to the illusory personal identity, we suffer because of our wrong self-image that we have. This is what spiritual / nonduality teacher Lisa Cairns is saying in this video.
Lisa Cairns (disciple of the renowned Advaita Master Ramesh Balsekar) says that in her teachings she is always pointing to that which is. ‘And that which is isn’t happening for someone!’ The problem is, she says, that ‘Most bodies go around with this illusion in them, the illusion of 'I', and they believe that life is happening to that person.’ ‘Rather than that person being an experience as well, they feel they are that person and that they experience life separately.’ So Lisa describes very well how humans very much believe in the illusion of ‘me,’ in the illusion of a separate self, in the illusion of personal identity. Human beings don’t see that reality is an illusion, they don’t see that life as we know it is an illusion. They don’t understand the nature of personal identity and why it creates suffering. ‘Because the separate self is trying to make something permanent, which is not permanent. They are trying to make themselves permanent, and they are trying to make the world permanent. They are trying to make themselves a solid object, and the world a solid object.
And that's impossible,’ Lisa explains. ‘So the human bases his whole life on that illusion! His whole life is based on ‘me and the world,’ ‘me and other’. And it runs around trying to make that a reality when it’s not. It runs around trying to fix an illusion, trying to make the dream-world, the illusory world a real one. But it never can be, it never will be.’
So what can we learn from this video? We can
    - understand the nature of personal identity better
    - understand better that we live in an illusory world with an illusory / wrong self-image
    - see how we create suffering because of our wrong self-image
    - see more clearly how we are attached to our ego or our sense of personal identity
Where to go from here? We can start practicing honest self-enquiry and see the illusory nature of our ego. The ultimate goal remains spiritual awakening / enlightenment.

there was a time when I was afraid of 'me' but in time, and after careful observation it can be seen: both sides are part of the show. There is a me, and it IS required. and there is universal love, consciousness, life energy filling everything with it's power. When discovering consciousness, it is easy to demonize the me and say that it is the problem. But the 'me' is also the solution, because when the wave and the ocean are one, there is nothing left to talk about. It just is, and there is a me and there is beyond, and life is good. I find escaping from the me to be cowardly, and many are stuck in that position. But even more are stuck as the me. So who goes beyond the me, but then returns to embrace it and love it for the beauty it offers? Love finds a way, and is both me, and not me and also beyond me as me and also beyond what I could conceive. That position of surrender, not knowledge, produces the humility and lightness, light, or what-have-you that most want to find.

Great video. Our way out of the illusion is wholesale forgiveness in the form of recognising that we are all inhabiting what amounts to no more than a chaotic nightmare and that nobody has actually done anything or committed any crime whatsoever.
The Truth really does set you free. A nightmare is only a nightmare until the dreamer awakens.

Lisa is truly genuine, even the very reasonable fees for personal sessions make her accessible. She’s straight forward and frank. A lot of teachers out there or speakers of non duality profit profoundly from what they do. And it’s not to say they don’t do great things. It’s just I can’t understand how anyone in this arena can justify charging £200 an hour to talk to them privately. For me it’s accessibility, and for that reason I think she’s the real deal.

Once we go inward, we won’t feel that we are missing out nor will we be disappointing others. We shall re-emerge whole and detoxed from the myths, having learned a sacred lesson: letting go of what doesn’t work and inviting in what does, and so much more. Growing into Joy is about the journey we take when we trust the flow of life. It’s about embracing the uncertainties with a knowing that we’ll come out the other side more whole, tenderer, wiser, and always with love.

I see 'The' illusion to be,- Blaming anything/one for a n y t h i n g . All are life. , and a such are the imperfect/perfection of life. All life has all life doing e x a c t l y what they re meant to do, at the time and manner meant to be done. I see how all life is from itself as its creator, and never 'dies'. Only re-cycles (from the smallest vibration to the largest -universe- all are cycles of life).

The real you is atoms aware that they are atoms. You are the universe aware it is the universe. “You” arent this “thing” inside your skin looking outwards into the universe, you are the universe and it is you!
“You are something the whole universe is doing in the same way a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing” - Alan watts. You arent a thing added into the universe you are completely a feature of the universe, and the universe is “doing you” and all your behaviour and personality and actions and thoughts and feelings.
Once you realise your ego is an illusion then you see that your problems are also an illusion. There isnt a solution to life’s problems because they are an illusion. The “you” who has all this worry and suffering and pain and guilt and sadness and depression doesnt exist.

For me this separate entity is not just a collection of stories and physical aspects. It is a perspective or point of view of experience. I cannot experience a different perspective. And on permanence: this perspective has always been there, so that is one example of permanence. Sure the things are impermanent. But my experience is that this perspective is permanent. I don't know of anything that has not ever been this perspective... so umm what???

Pretty much, even Sam Harris believes that the self is an illusion, he takes the scientific approach since hes a nueroscientist, he doesn't believe in the mystical part of spirituality but he teaches what works on a scientific view and has seen that certain spirtual teachings such as false self and mindfullness meditation has reshaped and repaired certain parts of the brain, so yeah, even if you don't believe it, it works on a scientific level.

What you think yourself to be is not the way you are.
We, through conditioning and the way our mind operates, believe that there is an "I", a center to all the thoughts. There is no central self. There is a flow of changing conditions and thoughts, analysis of memories and future thoughts. We instinctively think that all that stuff is happening to a core "I" that is actually (liberatingly) non existent.
Imagine a tube blowing ping pong balls out and a little way separated from the end there is another tube sucking them in; lets say that at anytime there is always an average amount of ping pong balls in this space between appearing and disappearing, this is analogous to what our "I" is.
The "I" is empty of any core stability in anyway apart from one, and that is its consciousness. The mind that formed started to create the sense of self through gathering thoughts and constructing false identity, there is no you, the person that you think you are is not there, your mind is just continually holding up this house of cards with its continual rampant juggling act of self reinforcement. If you want to know who you are really, ask yourself who you are when you are in deep sleep. You will realise that you have no clue what or who you are in that state...The reason is that right now you are what your mind makes you out to be, when you remove all the mental constructing you are left with your actual self.
You are not your mind, you are not your body.
I am sorry to say that you are not your accomplishments, your career role, your family role etc etc.
If you like, you can think yourself to be all this and more though, welcome to the illusion. If you wish, you can continue to believe that the construct is you, you can continue to live with suffering and unfulfillment, nothing that you attain, capture, achieve or construct will leave you satisfied, you (we) are continually trying to hold water in our hand that is, by nature, un-holdable.
I'm sure I have done nothing to explain this subject that is 180deg from our instinctive understanding, hopefully you will take a long journey that will help you to come to some deep realisations.
      Good luck : )

    • @jimmuncy5636
      @jimmuncy5636 7 років тому +2

Very good answer: well-written, comprehensive, and focused. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
But your philosophical position is difficult to support in my reality, the only one I know. For example, if I go to my oven, turn on a burner, place my hand on it, and hold it there, I'm absolutely convinced beyond any discussion that something really painful is happening here and now to me. While doing so, I could read your good answer at the same time as my hand fried. Pretty sure that I would believe the severe pain in my hand over any theory that assures me that it is not real.
Why would I continue to keep myself in this pain if I had a real option? I would be 100% motivated to give up this self-created "illusion," if I could. But I don't.
It seems that humans are trapped in a dark cave, yet your theory tries to sell them on the idea that there is no cave, that it's all in our imagination. Difficult to accept that. Maybe the theory is faulty?

The existence of personalities is obvious. We are experiencing them permanently. Nothing mysterious about that. But the real question is: what is it that is experiencing this personalty? Nobody ever seems to thin about looking into that. Why is that? ;)

@@edzardpiltz6348 so, in a long nightmare with a monster will you insist on the «obvious existence» of dream monster? And what about the time when you wake up from it? (After waking up you can say that dream monster is not permanent, but personality is not permanent either - in deep sleep, for example, there is no personality. You can have completely different personality in a dream. And even the presumably consistent personality of so called reality is not so permanent - it changes greatly as time goes by).
One can compare personality with the light «running» throught the bulbs of string lights. And «having a personality» with continuously following the light with one's eyes thinking that the light is the same all the time.

@@allfinenicksareNA , absolutely right. Personality also changes multiple times during the day depending on who you surrounded with. Wether you are with your boss your lover or your mother, each time you will display a slightly or even significant different personality and sometimes when there are different people present, personalities even collide and cause inner conflict. But still the experience of the validates them to a certain degree: personalities in the waking state are as real as is the dreammonster in the dream. But when you wake up from the dream of life or, as we call generally call it, die the personalities will have disappeared as the dreammonster will have upon entering the waking state but you will remain the same: the witness of whatever arises and when nothing arises, you will witness that too, as in deep sleep. 😊😘

I find it irritating when teachers say the identity is the problem; that I suffer because I feel I'm a person. Because if there was no sense of 'I am this person' I wouldn't be able to function. If someone called my name I wouldn't respond, because I wouldn't feel they were calling ME, etc. How would I know whether to feed myself or feed the dog, if I couldn't distinguish between ME being hungry and THE DOG being hungry?
I think this is how we get seekers running around saying "I'm not a person, there's nobody here", while they feel mighty proud that THEY have realised this, and OTHER PEOPLE are still stuck thinking they are a person. And I'm speaking from personal experience! But yeah I know, nobody's speaking etc etc.

Another cliche ridden presentation of non-duality. This new age trendy form of expressing the ancient philosophy of "not two" comes across as unsubstantiated rhetoric. Many of these so called teachers with their incessant mantra of a "non existent self", appear only to mimic one another with this pointless message... a message devoid of any real insight. The rich eastern nondual philosophies of Advaita Vedanta, Taoism and Buddhism do not convey the subtle nihilism that resonates in this neo nondualistic stuff.
