    Don’t know where to start other than to say thank you. Learned so much and agree with everything you had to say. I am 73 years old and started learning card tricks to share with family and friends as a past time. Your channel is also about more than card Tricks which is even more valuable to me. You have become my favourite go to channel because you have so much to offer. You are a special human being who has given so much to me. Thank you again and I will look for ways to give you and your channel my support.

      I couldn't agree more Martin. like you, I'm an older amateur, although i've been doing it for most of my life. if the character of the teacher matters as much to you as the material he's teaching, I suggest that get any books you can find by a wonderful older magician named Mike Close. he's got some books called 'the workers series' (or something like that). fantastic magic taught by a good solid guy that could have been spidey's grandpa. the stuff in his books is a lot harder than what spidey teaches, but within the grasp of any amateur - even those with lousy sleight of hand. he's got this wonderful origami trick called 'the imagination tester.' it may take you a few hours to figure out and construct, but it is not hard to perform and so amazing to those who see it. ...sorry for rambling...my main point is that Mike Close is similar to spidey in many good ways and you might like this guy.

    Another big problem is that a lot of the times, people don’t even know that they are hurting the channel.
    UA-cam keeps track of every second of watch time, so you you are skipping around in the video, or get bored and leave, etc, the video actually gets recommended less, because although the views were higher, watch time wasnt.

    • @ResoluteGryphon
      @ResoluteGryphon 3 роки тому +1

      Playing devil's advocate: If your audience is getting bored and are compelled to skip around or leave the video entirely, maybe the content needs improvement, and rightly UA-cam should recommended it less.

    • @SpideyHypnosis
      @SpideyHypnosis  3 роки тому +3

      @@ResoluteGryphon I agree. But I know for a fact that a lot of my subscribers who are here for tutorials are like chickens without a head. They’ll open a video I upload without reading the title then realize it’s not a tutorial and leave. Meanwhile, I worked really hard on that content and for other viewers it is very valuable. So I hate that people who are here taking from me aren’t willing to do the bare minimum to help me succeed overall.

      At the risk of being banned 🙄 I think it really depends on the specific channel. Spidey's stuff is really good and I've never felt compelled to skip around. But some channels have a click-bait title, and then when you start watching the first half of the video is clearly just filler to get their watch time up and increase their ad revenue. I'm not here to make you money, I'm here to be entertained. Treat me right (like Spidey does) and I'll treat you right. Troll the algorithm to maximize your profits, and I'll troll you right back to maximize my entertainment.

    • @charlie3449
      @charlie3449 3 роки тому

      @@bryan__m can you really blame a creator for trying different avenues for channel growth? your view of being a passive viewer is not entirely true. your viewing has an effect on that creator's success, and sometimes, their living. if you aren't interested in their content, then don't click. don't hurt their ratings by clicking and then telling everybody to hurt that video. It doesn't matter if they might have tried to increase watch time. you don't HAVE to go the route of telling everybody to skip parts of the video, and it's a good thing to do not to. it's kind of selfish to troll a creator for trying to (in some cases but not others) make a living, isn't it? It's so easy to not do those comments, so just don't do them. it's that easy. a rare occasion where the passive thing to do is the right thing.

    • @bryan__m
      @bryan__m 3 роки тому

      @@charlie3449 oh I don't tell people to skip. I'm too lazy 🤣 Do I blame creators for trying different avenues for channel growth? Absolutely not.
      Do I blame creators for dicking me around? Yup. Those are not the types of creators I follow either, but since they are so good at gaming the algorithm naturally their content still makes it to me. I'll be confused and bored as to what the person is talking about and look at the comments to see if it's just me: lo and behold someone has told me where the actual interesting part starts. I skip, watch, and be sure to avoid that channel from then on.
      Again, I don't watch UA-cam to see how creative people can be to game the algorithm, I watch for the content. Provide good content, I'll stick around, throw you a like and subscribe (and click the notification bell to be notified of every new episode); provide bad content I'm not going to sit and play your game to guide even more people to it.

    This one actually hit me quite hard. I'm not a youtuber at all and I don't usually leave comments. I never thought about how I contribute to channels that I like to watch and learn from and this is something I will have to give a huge rethink. I like what you are doing a lot and how you treat us all. I was never guilty about leaving any comments as you described, but I skipped some parts of the videos and used "video starts from...". And now I'm quite ashamed of that.
    I think that 4 guidelines are super reasonable and fair. And I appriciate a lot that you have shared your views with us so openly and freely.
    Thank you for that! Love your channel :-)

    Absolutely!! So much gold here. Even as a beginner magician myself I stress to everybody that the trick is only a small part of what you are actually teaching. Confidence, performance, angles... etc. I don't like, and have tried in the past to deter people from uploading regurgitated tutorials. I literally watch like a million card tricks do something and then flip over and see somebody else copy and paste. Like they just finished watching that video and turned on record and then upload them doing it. And the bad part is UA-cam promotes it. If I learn a trick, I practice, practice, practice then show people what I have been working on then plug the video I learned it from so my viewers can learn it properly. So thank you Spidey, not just for the giveaways and tutorials, but for all of those other things that help us be better.

    Your videos and tutorials made my pandemic much more manageable while also going through paramedic school. I wasn't able to progress as a kid when I was obsessed with learning magic because I never understood theory, proper slight of hand and creating my own tricks based off of learning simple moves. As a kid I only cared about learning specific tricks and got discouraged when I couldn't do a proper "double lift" or didn't understand proper "misdirection". Not only has your channel help me understand magic better, it's helped keep my mind motivated to continuously keep learning a craft, and also prove to myself that hard work and dedication can allow me to relive the joy of creating new tricks off of what I learn and perform for my family and friends. Now that I'm done with paramedic school, I also now perform for patients in the back of ambulances to help distract them from potentially the worst day of their life, to try and put a smile on their face when they are in pain. I can't tell you how many patients and friends laugh and smile when I burn ink away, or "guess" their card. Never commented on a video, but I've been here for almost a year now and love seeing what you do and teach. Thank you

    I am very new to your channel but it has very quickly become one of my favourites because of the things you have listed in this video. As a veteran with Complex PTSD I find it very difficult to leave my residence (very handy in a pandemic 🤔). Having had a live of magic since childhood, I have started trying to learn some close up magic as a form of therapy. I am eternally grateful that professionals like yourself are willing to share so much with us through this medium. The fact that you don’t just show how a trick is done is what draws me to channels like yours. Thank you so much. 🙏

    I have never done or learned magic but have loved watching it my whole life. I recently stumbled onto your channel and have been binge watching your content.
    I am recently disabled because of a disease called scleroderma, which has stolen most of my passions in life away from me. This means that my life has changed and I am forced to find new hobbies and interests. What you have taught me brings those little smiles back into my life. I never really owned a deck of cards before, but I now have both a blue Bicycle deck and a red one . I also own a deck of double sided face cards as well as double backed cards.
    I just recently traveled cross country to visit my parents, and get this, I traveled with my cards to practice and show them what I have learned.
    I have never posted on your channel before because I'm watching your content years behind and I don't expect that you read comments from a year or more ago, but will start posting more on your new videos. Even this video is 7 months old as I post this and I am pretty sure will not be seen, but that is OK as I just wanted to say thank you anyway. You have made the life of someone a little bit better, thank you. I have since seen other magic content creators, but I far prefer your videos because of how you present the performance and give the history. Both of which should never be forgotten.
    Anyway, I plan of performing your trick using a double faced card that is forced and the real card is in my wallet in a few days (after I practice a little more) for my parents. They they will love it. So, not only did you bring a smile to my face, but you will also be bringing smiles to my parents faces. Thanks Spidey! I hope this post finds you, and if so, I hope you can realize what a magical thing you have done for me. See what I did there :)
    Thanks Spidey!

    I'll try to keep it short. First time I ever saw you (was on s youtube video of fool us) i thought I didn't liked you as a person or a performer, later on I came across your channel and by now I actually feel you as a friend, you've got me way more interesting on magic and for the longest time I couldn't work my mind around why would you come and teach us things that took you tons of money, time, and creative energy to create or tweak wonderful stuff, i always get a great time when I come to your channel and i always leave smiling and having learned something new, you've become something very close to a role model for me. Bottom line is that not only I've learned tons of magic tricks, techniques and effects, now I really enjoy watching you perform, it's a great experience and i get very engaged through a simple screen, and is incredibly fun watching you hang out with other magicians and have a great time.
    I cannot thank you enough, pls keep being a great person and a wonderful teacher.

    Very well said man! 🤘🏻 I’ve experienced all of these when sharing tutorials and I think you summed it up perfectly, it’s really just a lack of respect for the content creator and the art. People need to understand that we can’t dip into other people’s pockets and teach marketed effects. Magic definitely has a place to be tough online, there are many benefits, but there is a fine line to what you can and can’t teach. I have been including timestamps in the descriptions of my tutorials with the intent of helping viewers when rewatching the content. After listening to this I’m considering changing that because it just facilitates people skipping the really important things and looking for the “secret”, it’s their loss though I suppose. Thanks for this, great video😁

    This is the kind of video that should go viral. I agree a 100%. The point of a tutorial is not just the trick, the tools (the concepts, the performance, the patter) all of it is important even more so than the actual trick. Personally whenever I learn a new concept or sleight the first thing that comes to my mind is what other applications can I find using the same principal or combining it with other principals that I know and the trick itself to me is like a battle tested bonus. 🙂
    UA-cam is a great platform to share ideas and thoughts and grow as a community... And you are doing a great job. 👍

    I just ordered Raj Madhok's book and am looking forward to reading it. I appreciated this video because I had no idea how viewer behavior affected a channel I love the fact that magicians who love the art respect the intellectual property of brother/sister magician. I agree with what you said Spidey. As an amateur/hobbyist magician (never going to make money at it) I appreciate the "gifts" that tutorials are. I know you have done your best in researching what you put out, as I have purchased a few of your tricks, and in the tutorial video you are always talking about the history of the trick, and you have always given credit to those that created a version before you.
    As far as the length of your videos go, as an amateur, I appreciate what you give. Both you and Jay Sankey go insanely (and I mean that in a good way) in depth on presentation of the trick and the psychology behind it. These are things amateurs need to understand
    I absolutely love the envelope prediction where you fooled Shin, and gave us what I consider to be your greatest gift, Krylon Easy Tack!! I have actually substituted it in other illusions that use a different method, and it has worked perfectly! I do look forward to your tutorials, but I do like the other content you post as well, and watch as much as I can.
    Although I consider myself to be more of a "visual learner" when it comes to magic, I will purchase Raj Madhok's EBook, just because it is priced so low and you recommend it, and hey, he's letting you keep that video up! :)

    Ok, I’m that type of person who doesn’t comment much on UA-cam, and almost never when I agree with what’s being said. But here I have to step in and say that for me performances vs tutorials are the treasure of this channel. Obviously, I do watch tutorials but the performance style Spidey has amazes me even more and I’m trying to learn from him and his guests how to present the trick vs just know the secret. Once you learn a bunch of sleight-of-hands you start to notice them and can figure out some tricks by your own, but the presentation is smth that makes the tricks so mind blowing. Poor presentation definitely ruins the trick and the result is either poor reactions or trick method exposure.

    Unlike other people I don't go to youtube channels that only make tutorials, I watch videos of magicians like Alex Pandrea, Daniel Madison, Xavier Spades, and of course Spidey. The reason is that I like elaborated video, a video which not only teaches the secrets explicitly but also the history and psychology behind it. By just knowing the secret you can never be a great performer when you learn a trick you have to think like any other magician. And I mostly watch performances because I already know dozens of effect and those are enough to blow someone's mind but to know how to handle the audience to know how to present storytelling is the real deal.
    I usually don't comment on videos but this felt like I should.

      I will add Aaron Fisher to that list and Paco Rodas Ratazzi, both are great channels and imo need some more love.
      But regarding the "tutorial leeches", it's just some people that only have curiosity to figure out how something is done, nothing beyond that. Which I guess can be ok, but obviously not the best kind of viewer if you want people that actually care about magic and to have as part of a community.
      And man, commenting more is easy. Just have something important to do and instead procrastinate by giving Spidey engagement, it's that simple for me.

    I saw this video twice once on my ps4 console and on my phone so i can comment. I really enjoyed it. It has been a year since i actually got into magic. You have helped me a lot. I mentioned before to u that i was debating getting your psycho trick or your at the live table lecture. You mentioned to get the latter and i bought it. I actually have seen youtubers post some your tricks for free and i am like i am not clicking on this is spidey's livelihood and i feel the same for other magicians. I am learning face change by joshua jay(whom you mentioned lol) from his lecture, bought Ramsay voodoo trick, and many others. I always try to give support to the magicians i have seen or when a magician mentions a book i try to buy it. Thank you spidey.

    I really appreciate this kind of video, thank you Spidey! I think the best part of your channel, and what anyone who is just here for trick tutorials misses out on, are the nuggets of pure gold you give us all the time. You're not out here making parrot magicians who learn and regurgitate tricks but magicians who can take and create their own routines and effects. You're one of the good ones! Keep it going 💪

    Spider, you are being very reasonable in your request.
    I try to watch each video from start to finish. Once in awhile I need to stop and go back later and start from the beginning.
    If nothing else you have been honest, upfront, open and entertaining all while helping some of us on our journey in the magic community.
    I am grateful for the opportunity and when needed for the feedback I have received.
    One day I hope we can meet face to face for a proper thank you. 👍👍😃

I love the mentalist content. I also like to try and figure out the puzzle and learning methods let’s me try to figure out other tricks. As far as magic books or car repairs books or house repairs books. If that’s not your trade you might as well be reading greek. I can’t tell you how many things I’ve fixed thanks to UA-cam. Hi there, I don't usually comment on any video on youtube, but just because I'm not very used to it, I love your content (every single video) and I think it gets a really hard work and it's really good to have such a great mentalist, magician and creator performing it and teaching it, so thank you for all the content, but specially for all the theory you teach, as a semi-professional magician and mentalist, it's the part that makes me improve the most, it really makes the difference, you have lots of tutorials, but just a few that teach you the details you need to transform a "trick" into a magic experience, so for all that, thank you Spidey, thanks for inspire us on many creative ways!!

    Special thanx to "Raj madhok" for being so generous .
    It's really a big deal for a creator to allow his content (for which he put many days or months to come up with solid routines) 🙏
    👏👏👏👏
    And thanx to Spidey too
    1) for creating such a channel for the young future magicians and learners out there.
    2) for taking out precious time from busy schedule to remain active on channel too.
    Keep creating and I wish you good luck❤🤝

I'm more of a passive UA-cam user overall, might be a generational thing or a personality thing (or both), but your channel is one of the few where I post some messages, because it is clear you care for this community and you love what you do. Thanks a lot for all you are doing and giving.

    Good for you Spidey. I love how honest you are. Most people would have just pulled down the last tutorial without crediting the creator's. So good for you! I actually think the same thing happened to Daniel Madison. Look its gonna happen isnt it. I mean come on, how many guitarists have used the same chord selections over the years..its just influence isnt it. Spidey your content has changed the way i write my own magic, you've taught me so much about magic philosophy and mind set and how to structure effects. Its not just about secrets all the time. Thank you Spidey. Thank you for everyone that supports the art of magic and those who are working tirelessly to push the craft forward. 🕷🕸

    So absolutely true to the core Spidey. Thanks for bringing this up. I am not a magician but if I was the video creator it would encourage me if people did what is supposed to be correct. Video starts at has become such a take for granted thing since this means one doesn't give a shit about the essence or history around the trick/concept. Hope we all watch this and take it to our heart to take our time and let others take theirs to watch the full content rather a shortcut to their trick.

    Spidey, I speak for most of us when I say that we appreciate the videos you put out, no matter what they are about, and that we understand the work you do for us internet people. It kinda sucks that some people have the audacity to tell people on YOUR video in YOUR comment section to skip parts of YOUR video and hurt your channel. No, it really sucks. But just know that your (rapidly) growing group of subscribers really appreciates you and want the best for your channel. peace out

    I agree completely with everything you say in this reflection on UA-cam videos. I've been guilty of watching your (other) videos without leaving a comment. For this I apologize. After hearing your testimonial for "Mysteriouser and Mysteriouser", I followed your link and purchased the download. I look forward to reading and learning about Madhok's approach to mentalism. Back in the '60's I started trying to learn card tricks. One of the first books I bought was Jean Hugard's "Royal Road to Card Magic." I found it somewhat difficult to follow as the illustrations seemed to miss a lot of the "in between" steps. Recently, I ordered R. Paul Wilson's 5 Disk set of DVD's based on this classic. I love it. Even at 76 I find the explanations along with the videos very easy to follow. (Actually, much easier to follow than my wife's instructions of what I should do while she's out.)
