- We name and rate the Top 5 most outrageously over-packaged products, suggested by Canadians, and we take them all to Canada's Environment Minister Catherine McKenna to see what’s being done to minimize plastic waste. Only one of the companies says it has plans for change. So will the government act? After our interview, McKenna promises a strategy coming in June.

Plastic is what protects the product or food, itself. If you don't want plastic then replace it with a more better re-cycled plastic or another kind of product. But there is nothing like plastic, so plastic is the only way to go. If you see plastic as a criminal then you are not seeing the whole wide picture & you only see what plastic cannot be rather than what it can be.
Boycott & achieve what.........remove plastic..........if not plastic, something else will surely harm the planet. You know what, everything harms the planet, even we are a harm to the planet so we should boycott against ourselves, but do we?..............we don't but we keep living without boycott.
Not hard to use paper bags so fruit and veg and can use reusable bags for the rest the problem is idiots complaining about plastic but then they buy it anyways so they are not losing any money.
People in the past used glass, metal and waxed paper for lots of goods.
Glass is heavy and breaks fairly easy... 100% recyclable
Metal is still used today for canned goods, but lined with plastic to prevent the contents from eating through the metal. 100% recyclable except for the very minimal amount of plastic lining that will burn off in the recycle furnace.
Waxed paper... yes stuff tasted kinda funny, but was recyclable.
Why can't we go back to these methods?? Money, is costs a lot of money to recycle most of these items in energy and staff. We have become a "need it now and has to be as fresh as possible" society. Here in the southern US, we get produce from all over the world as many other places do to. (sorry for the post necro, but just a bit off my mind)

Bread in a paper bag, produce with no container, toilet paper in paper packaging, beans, grains, and chocolate from the bulk section (in your own container not a plastic bag), drink powder or concentrate instead of many whole bottles, pasta that doesn’t have a plastic window in the box

But many 'zero plastic' stores expect you to bring your own containers, so it's targeted at people who have vehicles--which emit way more carbon-based pollutants than a few pieces of plastic.

If companies don't want to use biodegradable/recyclable packaging, then they should pay for the environmental cleaning costs.

@@lifeisgood2542 if companies raise prices to offset the cost of cleaning their packaging people will look for brands that aren't offloading those costs. E.g. Buy peppers without the cellophane, buy loose mushrooms, buy pasta in boxes until the companies make the switch to biodegradable and recyclable options.
@@hollylockhart9423 tbh though actual true cellophane is not anywhere near as bad as other plastics since its made from cellulose (same stuff as paper,wood and cotton) so is actually biodegradable so will degrade in the environment but in the US in particular the term "cellophane" refers to many types of plastic films biodegradable or not

In Japan they recycle a lot of the plastic they use. I never see liter on the streets and they have certain days they pick up different types of trash and Japanese people actually separate them.
When I vacationed to Japan, I personally thought the packaging was very minimal - way less than the US.

Probably for shipping as well. My grocery store puts the perfumes in a locked glass case, there's options
those types of overpackaging are also used to give a small product more space for graphic marketing. in the case of otc drugs, the FDA regulated that a lot of information be put on the label and those types of overpackaging also serve to communicate those legalities.

Erm no, Coconuts have a protective shell--though in Sri Lanka the WHOLE coconut is used. Germs can stick to the pepper and what if someone wanted just ONE pepper and nothing else. They would most likely put it in a plastic bag to protect it and carry it to the register. Think of the elderly also ...

The only produce I put in a plastic bag at the store is leafy greens, just because they are more difficult and time consuming to wash properly. However, my grocery store uses a cellulose based plastic which is actually biodegradable. My potatoes dont get bagged - because the skin is peeled off before cooking. My bell peppers arent baggged - because they're super easy to wash. Same with tomatoes.

I'm a germaphobe and like the fact that the straws / forks are wrapped but why cant they do the paper wrapping like most straws?
Exactly what I was thinking. I've started shoving the paper wrappers into my pockets until I pass a recycling bin on campus. I even go and rinse out my Starbucks iced coffee cup and recycle it. I do get annoyed that people will treat the trash and recycling as if they're the same, even when they are different colors and have big signs. The main office building on campus is the only place I have seen with a compost bin. Crazy when there are about 20,000 students.
Just use Straw. Problem solved.

@@dokessezeaka5159 I've seen the stainless steel straws that came with a brush to clean inside them but I haven't been able to find a suitable container to carry them around in. There's also the issue about where to clean them after use since public restrooms don't strike me as a sanitary place to clean them.

They can also pack in better materials, Science has done its part with biodegradable materials, it's time for the government to do its part to incentives these companies to change their ways.

This is all common sense, one should be aware of that excess packaging means, excess garbage, excess dumping ground, excessive waste of money.. I never buy wrapped vege and fruits from big retailers, just the local small stores.

The problem with that is that we used to buy/eat food and use products purchased before plastic was invented. Bread came in a paper bag, meat was wrapped in butcher paper, vegetables and fruits came in cardboard boxes... Plastic is cheap and convenient for the producers of these products. There are other options, even more now than before plastic was invented! We can make plant-based film wraps that mimic plastic in almost every way. Or you can go back to using no packaging; most fruits and veggies can travel home with you loose in a single reusable bag or basket. Only small things like berries and mushrooms need some sort of package so they don’t roll everywhere and get crushed.
And at the end of the day, every food product wrapped in plastic will still say to clean it somehow before consuming. Whether it’s in packaging or not, it’s always best to clean things when you get home, whether it’s food, clothing, toys, etc.

Little known fact: China imports many of their single use pairs of chopsticks from the US. It's because American companies treat the pine trees the sticks are made from like a crop.
Most straws are packaged in paper. It's just cheaper to use plastic, which is why some companies choose to do so.

Leonard OP some people buy things like nachos, but that isn’t an excuse. My school switched from plastic cutlery to wooden cutlery. If something as unofficial as a secondary school can do it, a company like subway most certainly can.
Go even further! Get your clothing from thrift stores, dont buy paper towels use cloth instead, get things fixed dont just toss them. Think sustainability with every choice you make.

erm nothing wrong with paper towel and alot is wrapped in PAPER and think of all the water and chemicals and energy used to wash those bloody cloth towels when paper towel can be used in the COMPOST

Think about all of the trucks that have to haul the logs, then the factory that has to produce energy to make the paper towels and then the other trucks that have to ship those towels to the store. Not to mention all the animals that loose their homes so that we can wipe up a spill. Most people dont take the time to compost paper towels. Thank you for doing that! I have NEVER seen paper towels wrapped in paper. Could you give me a brand where this is a thing? Even if we get them wrapped in paper did the NOT come wrapped in plastic when they come in the crates that delivers to the store? I have used the same 10 cloth hand towels for the last 8 years and they will prob last another 8 years! I just toss them in with my other towels I would say if I was to make a full load of these towels it would take 300-400 of them to make a full load. So over 16 years 48 loads of laundry or 384 rolls of paper towels?
Katelyn no... first of all most people don’t have a compost, so it’s just gonna end up in the landfill where nothing biodegrades. And a lot of the time they are not recycled so you are cutting down trees. Also, paper towel is single use items, which are wasteful, taking up resources and costs a lot of money in the long run.
Cloth towels can be upcycled from old towels and t-shirt, so you are diverting them from the landfill, which is completely free. The water and chemical (you can use biodegradable soap you know) and energy for the extra small load of laundry every week or so is nothing compared to the water and chemical and energy to cut down a tree, process it, bleach it and wash it before it’s made into the soft paper just to be thrown away after 1 minute of use and then to throw away.

I will stick with using paper towels for the REALLY dirty/sticky/nasty jobs, unless I am planning on throwing out the cloth afterwards.
I make pillowcases and hankerchiefs out of sheets when they have big stains or tears, but the cloth is otherwise still sturdy. I haven’t found that old sheets make very good cleaning cloths, though.
Because I have the good fortune to live on a big property, I can compost worn out cloth rags if they are linen or cotton (takes forever, though - I don’t recommend it for suburban composting).
The problem isn't plastic, the problem is that we don't realise plastic spends 99,99% of its life time as waste and pollutant than it does as a useful product such as packaging/etc. It is one of the least efficient things we can use. It's like if we wanted to light our houses, instead of lighting a bulb, we would heat a thick piece of metal in a furnace until it glows and then use that glow to light up out houses at night.

Its Always easier to criticize than to deliver something.....if the host was the coo of p&g I wonder how he would concretely change the bounty packaging without running into sanitary And hygiene concerns.....like the company said some smaller corner convenience stores sell the bounty towel rolls individually roll by roll so how can there not by roll by roll packaging....
Cellophane, perhaps? It's not recyclable, but can biodegrade in 6 months in a landfill or compost pile. Although its production has produced enormous amounts of carbon disulphide, there are newer processes that eliminate that dangerous byproduct.
I worked in a place that sold baler twine in spools about the same size as really fat paper towel rolls. They were wrapped in paper. Why can't they do this? Yes, they won't be quite as pretty, and will add a little bit of cost, but it would work just fine.
If they're selling it roll by roll, package it that way. In the UK I've never seen kitchen roll wrapped individually and then again in packs. If it's sold in packs its packaged that way, if not you can buy the individually wrapped ones in boxes at places like costco. Theres ways around it.

While it's true we need to reduce plastic, companies are doing this because consumers want it, if people stop buying overpackaged products, companies will then have the incentive to change.

When companies take the easiest or most profitable route rather then the better-for-the-environment route, often the customer is left with almost no choice. Plastics generally reduce breakage or spoilage during shipment and storage, and can be made transparent, thus giving the consumer a better look at the product within. It would take a LOT of customers boycotting a product to outweigh those factors. Also, many consumers might pass over the recyclable-packaged products if they cost more than the plastic packaged version, creating the assumption that the customers actually prefer the plastic.
There are many voters who value the ways plastic allows them to see the actual product and protect the product in a sanitary manner until they are ready to use it. Legislators have to evaluate these motives versus the concerns of the environmentalist voters because it's the legislator's job.

@Rebecca sabet . I don't know about Japan being the "capital" of overpackaging , but I do agree with @ Der Jenator in that they have a far far better recycling system . Take a washing machine you want to discard for instance. You have 2 choices. You are either required to completely disassemble it and sort all the individual components into its different categories , be it plastic , metal , rubber . Even screws and bolts are separate . Then and only then will recycling pick it up. The second choice is to pay a hefty recycling fee before the complete unit is taken away.
Why is this not possible in Canada ? You tell me . How many Canadians have the intelligence or motivation to simply dissemble and sort an appliance ? In my experience as a mechanic , not too many .
Also in Japan you must purchase tags ( not cheap ) for your waste bags which are clear . If the collector sees something in "your " ( they have your identification on the tag ) then you will be fined .
What happens to the non recyclable items ? In most cases it is incinerated in super efficient incinerators .
I was standing right next to an incineration plant in Tokyo and didn't even know it. No evidence of smoke form the stacks and no odor also. Yet do our politician's take the time to research these more advanced countries ?

The Japanese are insane with their over-packaging but I think they are able to recycle a far higher percentage of plastic than N. America. But first step is to reduce, not recycle.

This is awesome. Thank you for turning the responsibility back on the producers. They tell us to recycling is the answer to pollution while too many of their products aren’t recyclable! Corporations are the biggest reason plastic fills the ocean, not consumer irresponsibility.

When people say that they would accept less packaging for less shelf life, they forget one major thing, its also used to hold out bacterias and also to make it last longer which is very important during transport.

Do you know the paper straws actually cost more than plastic straws? So people who whine about plastic better keep their mouth shut if subway decided to up sub prices by 50 cents.
Paper straws suck ass. Just wrap the plastic straws and forks in paper like chopsticks.

The overuse of plastic is also because of globalisation/capitalism. For instance, all major supermarkets wrap food in plastic for hygiene/transportation purposes. Back in the day, food was grown and sold locally in small shops. Therefore, no need for endless plastic! We need to go back to "old" times but it's too late as we've already created this convenient-throwaway society.
There is a reason plastic forks from fast food restaurants and straws are wrapped in plastic for a hygienic purposes

I remember lots of the packaging was glass a few years ago. Ketchup, Mustard, Mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, spices - all in glass containers. Now? All plastic. Why?

Glass is also easily breakable. In addition, some places, such as where I live, no longer recycle glass so using it no longer has much of a benefit.

Also, plastic-covered produce makes it less appetizing to me. It makes the produce seem less-fresh.

The video itself says most people do not live near to a zero waste grocery store and often the butcher or prepared food section won't let you bring a container to fill because they're worried about health code violations. They could change the laws and groceries could post signs encouraging BYOC. They could sell the cannabis in glass jars with sticker labels and metal lids that you can return for deposit like with beer.

re; the weed packaging. buy two portions, get two large hard plastic tubs. reuseable, but they don't reuse them. You save them, adding to your hoard of notreallynecessary household container hoard. Well the place I was shopping got enough complaints to switch to foil bags. Better/not better. Now let's see, it's got to be sealed so you know it's been opened, it has to contain odor and keep the contents fresh, and resist crushing. It does not need to show the product, and light blocking is better. How do you do that without plastic, I don't know. PLA biodegradeable plastic, or hemp plastic, bamboo, and other decomposeable plastics should be pushed.
re-usable glass containers. companies should offer a recycling option, which many dispensaries do. no reason you cant use a glass container, wash and reuse.

The weed comes prepackaged and sealed. The shop does not repack bulk. Someone elsewhere does and they pack 3.5g per pack.
@@chungonion there are pretty good glass options that barely break. Also it comes down to handling.
The reality is this. Local produce , local business will reduce packing and packages. The reality is this plastic reduces waste particularly from countries that are not local. Immplementing green houses, krganic growers which is larger produce in most cases not smaller, ecouraging grow units of larger preportions can house trees also reducing carbon emission in travel. Recognizing other countries as being valuable producers and on an economic level may require some support however we must examine it closer in order to be fair with other countries.
Standards of care vary and shouldnt we be responsably taking care of the people in our country in order to help others?

Im not against the fork and knife being packaged, i feel like its not hygienic when everyone touches my knife and fork. Lets advocate for biodegradable packages.

Yeah. That’s why I bring my own cutlery. That way I know where it’s been.
I recommend you bring your own cutlery, straws bags, etc with you when you're going out then. If you're a women, you usually have a purse,, these small items that you can reuse are small and barely take up space. If you're a man (Usually men just have their wallets), make use of bringing a carrier or a small bag. All you have to do after it clean your reusable products . If that's too difficult, stop purchasing fast food and wait till you get home. Helps you save money as well.
Biodegradable plastic just breaks down faster into smaller and smaller pieces. They get eaten by plankton and travel up the food chain...
It’s a sanitary issue though ... who would want paper towels exposed ...

@@karly2190 Same here..so we get the 12-bundle where there's one large plastic bag with 12 unwrapped rolls. It's not a complete solution, but at least it lessens the problem.
I work at a clothing store and part of the shipment team. It's even worst when they have to package each individual item in plastic, then package those individual items in one big plastic wrapping. By days end, we end up with roughly 4 big sized garbage bags full of plastic.
At my uni in New Zealand we use wooden cutlery in the food courts. Maybe others should start?
Suzy Kydd at my Uni in Germany we use regular and actual silverware. And guess what: the dirty dishes actually get returned to the cafeteria and not stolen. If you bring your own travel mug for coffee, you will even get a small discount instead of paying the extra fee for paper cups.

Then I would have to buy liners for my wastebasket. Currently I reuse the bags from the store. When my supply of wastebasket liners has built up I use my reusable bags.
why don't they just use paper packagings like it's recyclable and works the same way .-.
Fun fact: Paper isnt really better, its probably not even possible due to the amount of paper we would need, there are simply not enough trees.

@@onedirectionarekillingme4530 yeah, the issue goes pretty deep apparently. I bring my own boxes to the store, its plastic but I reuse it every single time and the store happily puts meat in my box because they save money that way.
the problem is that you need to grow trees to make paper, while plastic is merely just a byproduct that is why plastics are so cheaper.

I was pleasantly surprised today when got lunch at A&W here in BC, and noticed something weird about my straw for my drink.
It was thicker and stiffer, wrapped in Paper (which is normal already) but the straw itself was actually made of compostable materials was very impressed to see a large food chain actually starting to make the shift.
If they can do it so can other companies, one product at a time, as the demand for enviromentally safe packaging increases the cost of making it will decrease.

The kinder bueno is reasonable because one time they were melted if they weren’t in the packaging the chocolate would just have gone to the bottom

I feel like these kids are being indoctrinated regarding plastic. I agree plastic is overused, but these kids should forum their own opinions.
There's a difference between indoctrination and teaching kids good habits and awareness of problems in their society.
Teaching kids to eat more vegetables is not indoctrinating them into becoming vegans.
Teaching them to share and cooperate is not indoctrinating them into becoming socialists.
Teaching that single use plastic is bad for the environment is not indoctrinating into going off the grid and living caves.
