@@smile7172 + I always thought Jon Bon Jovi said he distained the bass player. I wonder if he actually wrote the line, or if the producer, or Richie came up with it.
@mountaingoat1003 this song has haunted me for about 2 yrs may be from apathy, boredom or what not. tonight i,m getting the bass line down. my wife wants it.
I've been playing bass for 2 years and haven't tried to learn this yet. It looks fun to play. Not that it's too hard but because I haven't thought about playing it until now
I'm an old fart that finally gave into the young soul that was lost in bass from the 60's and 70's. Finally (shows you how old I am) and as for Bon Jovi I've still got my Xroads tour Wembley tickets in pride of place with memories of standing on the centre circle. Enough of the past. I bit the bullet, bought a shortscale much to the anst of 'er indoors. LP and RG's are now firmly on the wall and I simply can't thank you enough. I really mean it. I have been struggling (with the guitar) to link timing to technique to tab no matter who I have used for on line lessons, it simply didn't jell. Maybe it's helped by using shortscale but, burger me, watching you is like having a whole 1000 piece jigsaw falling into place! I have been bouncing around the office enjoying every single minute. Thanks, thanks and please keep it up.
An absolutely brilliantly written and executed bass line - simple, melodic, supportive, and f**ing catchy! Hugh McDonald was Bon Jovi's secret musical weapon. Like Michael Jackson's Billy Jean, the bass line makes the song, and not a single note is wasted, or can be replaced.
"...not a single note is wasted or can be replaced..." Thanks for showing me the exact words i was trying to find to describe what i was feeling minutes ago, when i was listening to the original track with a headphone and paying attention to the bass line (overall structure + details) and to the performance of the bassist in Studio. The words you found to describe It are as perfect to explain It as the bassline is perfect to this song, LMAO.
As is the case with so many classic rock songs, the bass line adds as much as a lead guitar or vocalist. Without the bass line, many songs just wouldn't carry as well.
:D. Saludos y sigue así ^.^
You are very special because you are the only one is see on YT who actually plays it the right way and makes the bass sound pretty good you can't say that about the rest
God, i just cry because my friend keep telling me to focus on the bass everytime i hear the music, and he said it back in Junior Highschool... Its just perfect, combined with personal memories with this song
Dam sure this one ain't CLOSE TO BEING EASY.. I imagine it would be fairly easy if the bass player and drummer learned it together. You cannot substitute the energy of a real drummer with you playing bass. I'm sure IN TODAY'S MESS some could play to a drum track and speaker but it's no flavor to it. No emotion. But I love Bon Jovi basslines .
You got a lot of confidence not bracing your left thumb. The experts say to always do it, but there's a time and place not to and it takes practice to know where your arm is. Good work!!
Man, looks tough to keep a groove! Nice job!!! I've been playing bass for a long time and even that seems hard to learn. Time for me to start practicing!
Young bass players, learn to play with a pick and your fingers. Most players prefer one over the other and will not, or can not switch. Each song is different and requires different attacks. You don't want to sound the same on every song. Mix it up.
if you're a guitarist, there's really no reason you shouldn't be able to play anything early on better with a pick, so you should try to avoid that and play with your fingers imo. it's definitely a good and different technique, but it makes things WAY easier and is that much easier when you're a guitarist transitioning.
Started on guitar and then moved to bass, and first off I'm never going back but this is true. You need both. I prefer playing finger style but some songs you just need a pick.
Great advice. Where were you when I started? lol I started using only fingers, and am having great difficulty now learning how to play with a pick. I'm getting there, but I'm not finding it easy to be certain.
Always loved this song but I now always listen out for the bass line everytime which made me love the song a bajillion times more, also _shout out to_ *Hugh McDonald* who actually re-wrote and re-recorded this bassline which ended up being the one we've all come to love and enjoy :)
My kids has moved up from beginner to early intermediate but this song is JUST too difficult for him unfortunately. Can wait,, we both love Living on a Prayer,, one of the perfect rock songs.
Was always my favorite song to play on bass in pep band. I used to throw in a slide right at the start of the chorus, kinda like what Sting would do when he played Roxanne live.
I did that little half step riff in 1972 and my band mates thought it was stupid. Now I hear it on living on a prayer. I still think it sounds good lol.
Thanks dude, this helps alot. you're a total badass. It would help if the song was a little quieter relative to your bass playing, but either way, great video
I honestly hate this song, but my band leader says we need to learn it. Never realized what a monster this bass part is! Just another example of leading from the bottom.

yeah I love the pre-chorus and chorus bassline it makes the song so much better without standing out
the bass is 40% of the song

Agreed! I’m a bassist and without bass the songs would be bland...
You got that right
I forgot the video title, but it explains why the base in this song is a work of genius.
I don't really play guitar/bass but I love being able to read the tabs!
play bass

absolutely fantastic guide and instruction. I love it when the bass carries the melody of a song.

I'm just a random guy, but this really helped me. Love your style and taste. Perfect editing/mixing. Keep 'em coming!
Great job man! Very simple yet catchy and melodic bass line, one of my favourites.
learnt this about 4 months into my bass journey. now im not even a year in and playing hysteria
will always love this song
Bravo! Absolutely amazing! I was looking for a bass only version of this song to play along at the drums. Great work!

There's just something about the lower tones and keeping a steady rythem that makes me enjoy playing the bass over the guitar.
my favorite bass line ever it is a song within a song
I think it's a super underrated bass line. Not my favorite ever but it's damn well written.
And people think bass is easy
if you think guitar is hard, then this would be as hard.*
Dam sure this one ain't CLOSE TO BEING EASY.. I imagine it would be fairly easy if the bass player and drummer learned it together. It is
It. Is
No not really. When I learned to play Wild Side from Mötley Crüe it took some time to learn it. That’s how you learn bass
I never knew that this song had such an awesome bass line.
The part during the chorus is wonderful. Whenever I hear the song my ear hones in on the bassline. That tells you it's good.
In my opinion, it's arguably the best line ever. It's between this and Miguel - where's the fun in forever.
THIS GUY IS INCREDABLE!!! I'VE LEARNED SO SO SO MANY SONGS FROM THIS GUY!! YOU R A LEGEND!!!
I love you're cover's man, I hope you keep making them! One song I would love to see would be Harold of the Rocks by Primus
I second that

After watching your videos I have a new appreciation for bass. It totally makes this song.
I have a seen a lot of your videos and they are all really helpfull. Your tabs are the most accurate I have ever seen. Keep doing what you 're doing.
I was looking for the bass riff for this and it’s so fun to play omggg thank you :)!!
3:41~3:43 awesome
NinetyGold Studio toooooooo good. I wish every song’s bass part was amplified louder like this lol
Unique
Alec is play this neck region!!!!
You mean the cheesy key change that makes it more annoying to play? Haha!

many first-timers use Table Rock Sound to learn the fret/strings for that song, including fingering

Alec is so great on playing bass i wish Alec would be back to Bon Jovi
He didn’t play this bass line
Fantastic! Alec did an amazing bass line in this one and you played it awesome!
Except Alec didn't play it... this was recorded by Hugh McDonald.
It's awesome that the tab is actually playable, unlike many book versions
Well done even though Alec didn't use a pic. I'm not judging at all (some songs I do, some I don't). Loved it!
Thanks for the video
I just got a bass for my 13 year old son and he’s learning his first song ever by watching this video
3:42 esa parte siempre me parecio genial
TENES TODA LA RAZÓN HERMANO
I’m a drummer and I learned to listen this fantastic strument (drum and bass work toghether) And nothing… I LOVE IT! ❤️🤘🏻🥁🎸
Been listening to this song since teenager but just realize how powerful the bass line is❤
PERFECTION. Congrats mate, you are really good at this.

Alec John Such (R.I.P.), original bassist from Bon Jovi played this with his fingers, but sounds cool with pick, too.
Such a cool bass line. Played it like 50 times in a row now, I think I got er down
Great cover/lesson! And what a great bass line... Thanks so much!

@@lisanidog8178 my approach if muscle memory isn't familiar with a riff..get the notes, start slow until..then apply whatever tempo is required
