  • These 2 Mixing Tips may change your life. 10 examples on how because of Volume Compensation and Temp Balance you think your EQ is wrong while it's right. How you choose wrongly: EQ curves, Compressor Attack Time, your favorite plugins. To Attend a free trial Class of this Mixing Course online send email to: mixingcourse@andrewzeleno.com
    In This Video We Will Talk About: We will be fixing muddy sounding snare. We will find the right curve with SSL 4000E EQ but we will think it's wrong. Find out why! Then we will check how many people start with the wrong level and how it brings them the wrong decisions for EQ curves. Then we will try to fix low mids of a synthesizer. We will find a great EQ curve but we will not approve it. Check out why! Using Tube Tech CL1B we will compare Long Attack VS Short Attack for the heavy bass guitar in the heave rock song. But we will make the wrong decisions. Find out why!
    Also check how a compressor really works with diagrams and view each peak of a waveform. We will check if it's fair to compare more compression VS less compression. Then we will try to choose which Pultec EQ plugin is your favorite one. But we will find out how plugin manufacturers cheat you with this. UAD Pultec Legacy VS UAD Pultec EQP-1A VS Waves PuigTech. Then we will check how to make punchy kick drum in EDM beat with FabFilter Pro-C2. And why we don't choose the best compressor setting! Then we will compare CL1B VS 1176 Compressor for vocals. Why we chose CL1B which it's really worse for that example. Find out why why it's worse and why we chose it!

    !!! I use the most fair approach. No prepayments. You get a free trial class which is a real-time class with my current students who are taking the course right now. If you like it, you enroll. But still no payments in advance. You will pay only after you start the course and you can do it during the first week of a month. Not in advance. Also we have monthly payments only. So you don't pay for the whole course. I will be proving that it's the top quality education class by class to keep you enrolled in. 99% of students finish all 9 months of the course. I've been doing it like that for 8 years in a row. Get the Free Trial class - it's a fair approach!

    When I was studying at Andrew's mixing course, I remember well how he teached us make comparison always at the same volume level, that means after applying any processing on your instrument/track you have to always compensate volume level. But more important before applying anything is to find right balance between instruments and then decide if you really need any compression or EQ. Thank you very much Andrew for great content!😎😀

    It took me years of mixing to understand the importance of volume compensation when adding plugins and referencing other tracks to compare my work. Mastered tracks are typically so much louder than a final mix, so it's harder to reference than some people make it seem. Thanks for the explanation on these topics!

    I suppose this is an advantage of hardware controls... It's more intuitive to raise the volume simultaneously as things get quieter and you're watching the meter. You almost do this intuitively.. Automatically. With a mouse, the user is less inclined to use the controls interactively.

    • @covidpassforslaves1763

    Serious question, why don’t all plug-ins have auto gain compensation? Especially EQ‘s and compressors?

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  2 роки тому +5

      Because it's pretty impossible. Our ear is not linear. So the meter can't know in what frequency range we would consider some instruments compensated in volume. If you imagine how overtones of of the instrument can go against overtones of the other instrument, making partial out of phase cancellation, you main instrument will be sounding quieter. So anyway you need manual compensation to make sure it has the right volume. Also, I have a video about Izotope Ozone 9 on my channel. Somewhere in that video I showed how their auto compensation actually didn't compensated properly in some example I used there.

    • @phadrus
      @phadrus 2 роки тому

      @@AndrewZeleno1 thank you for explaining this Andrew. I’ll watch that Ozone video too. 👍

    • @JoeyFTL

      @@AndrewZeleno1
      Fair point, but how is it then that some plugins do auto gain compensation remarkably well (like some of the Slate stuff - def not the tape though - or the TDR Slick eq?
      Not really a huge deal for me personally because of my workflow, but I refuse to believe it can't be done when there are numerous counterexamples.

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  2 роки тому +5

      I don't mean it can't be done automatically. But there is always a bit more or less with the obvious reasons. And as I mentioned above I showed imperfection of auto volume compensation in my video. Another thing is this simple example: your bass has some amount of upper mid. Our ears are mostly sensitive in this area. If a compressor compresses overall RMS level by 5db it doesn't mean upper mid is compressed by 5db. Some compressors modify the frequency balance significantly. and upper mid can be lowered down by 3db. Even if the auto compensation can figure out that upper mid goes down by 3db somehow it's fine. But out original bass couldn't even have audible enough upper mid in the first place. Its upper mid was just 0.2db above some overtones of the other instruments and we still heard it. Then after volume normalization there is a chance the upper mid of the bass could be still 0.1db quieter than audibility threshold and bass will not be audible. When we compensate manually we move the volume to the level where we hear those overtones because we examine it with out ears. So we push more or less not because of it's exact number of db we are compensating but because we we push as much as we need to hear the bass in the mix again. A machine doesn't have ears. Also compressors modify the harmonics balance. By doing so there is not 100% chance that some of harmonics will be figured out properly when they are at the boundary of being inaudible.

    Question: beside your ears, do you trust 100% the VU meters of a plugin??

    • @AndrewZeleno1
      @AndrewZeleno1  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jess. Of course not. VU meters can be very misleading. In this video CL1B is trusted just because you truly check more compression VS less. So obviously it shows it and it can be trusted. But for example that NI VC76 plugin has a very slow reacting VU meter. So if you throw let's say a short drum through it you won't see the real amount of compression.
