Wow! These UK locomotives in France were still alive. I could see them moving, hear their subdued grunt, as their diesel engine hearts throbbed. Alas, those from last week's program were deceased. Rusting away and unloved. It took me back some sixty years, when as a young apprentice signwriter, I'd go to English Electric here in Brisbane, where I'd signwrite on the livery. I loved my trade and I loved trains. Oh, the memories!
Those 58s need to come home. There is a shortage of off the peg locomotives that are built to our narrow loading gauge. The class 66 production at electro motive has stopped, no more are coming to the uk. Those 58s could be re engined and put back in service in the uk, like the 69s .
When the class 58 were under criticism it occurred to me that maybe their shortcomings should be overcome rather than just sideline them and buy new. It seemed such a waste of a precious investment AND it seemed to have had a very sound design concept favoring ease of maintenance.. So, I agree, bring back the 58s and re manufacture them. I imagine that this would mean a new prime mover ...the good old Ruston although reliable, is probably way outside the emissions standards for today.
There is no work for them, hence why they haven’t returned to the UK. No operator really is looking for unreliable 1980s technology. GBRf have ordered 30 Class 99s so clearly there isn’t a shortage of “off the peg” locos.
As much as we'd like to see Class 58s back on the UK national network, it's very unlikely. Shortage of locos you say? Look at the number of abandoned Class 60s at Toton
Earlier today I read elsewhere that all the 58s here are being scrapped very soon, most if not all have been stripped out of wiring and anything of value etc, I think 58001 and 58050 (Doncaster's last BR loco) are both in that lot
I see those 66's regularly in south western France. 2 days ago one was at the Spanish border at Hendaye and in May I saw one at Modane where freights are handed over to Italian locos. They work regularly through Poitiers.
Hi I live in Bagnac sur Cele in the Lot valley I’ve seen one of these here on the Figeac to Auriallac line hauling stone trains from the local quarry here - I suspect this movement has now finished Thanks for the vid !
I seen some in Canada, lol, on a real note good video mate I think ya see a lot of country's with the 4and a half foot gauge tracks with different locomotives from other country's, I like the class 66, but my favourite is the class 37 , godbless you ,
I've actually seen the 66/2s hauling freight right through the middle of Rouen, along the line that runs down to the port on the right bank. Waited at a level crossing, and one came through. It was most unexpected.
I really like the wasp stripes on the buffer beam of those 66s I think they look quite smart also still good to see so many in ews livery even if they are used by db schenker on different note sad to see all those 58s just sitting there slowly rotting away, save the 58s?
They could be saved .it really depends on the cost to repair and transport them back to the uk . There not really a use for them though , a lot of their jobs have been taken by other locos. They are more likely to get scrapped
All those 58's need returning over here! There is a group trying to restore one, if we chopped them up we could get loads of spares off them & make a good bit of money off what is actually scrap. Plus any good ones could ALSO be restored... But of course, nobody cares about old railways enough to put out the cash
The 58s along with some 37s were taken through the tunnel many years ago in conjunction with the building of a new High Speed Line . They were used for all the associated trains needed for the building of this , most of the 37s were returned to the UK but that was not the case for the 58s.
The colour-scheme they have is the old EWS livery used in the UK - I'm not sure about the link to Wisconsin Central..? DB Cargo moved them to France as they had too many spare locos in the UK.
@@trainsplanes same person that created EWS also created Wisconsin central, and sold them to DB Schenker, and CN railway. He is Edward Burkhardt, the same person whose railway burned down a part of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, in 2013 with his MM&A railway.
@@trainsplanes I understood the reference but I'd only call the 58's true UK locos since we actually made them. Very sad that a nation who once exported locos around the globe ended up buying them in.
It’s sad to see all those 58s wasting away especially with so few preserved, but hey at least 58023 will be at the SVR! Perhaps even 016 as I’ve heard rumours that may be ready
The EMD 66 arent natively UK built. Theyre German but have veen used extensively in Germany, France, Norway, Britain, Egypt, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Poland and Denmark :)
All of those EWS Class 66’s were built in London, Ontario, Canada and delivered into the uk between 1998 & 2000. Around 50 of the 250 delivered to EWS now DB are in Europe along with around 20 of the 114 delivered to Freightlinner. In total around 480 have been built for the UK with GBRF buying some European EMD 66 and bringing them into the UK.
Hi Simon, I visited about 10 days ago so it was recent. I drove there however there is a SNCF station close by called Gare Pont De L’Arche. Hope this helps 👍
In the mid-2000s EWS set up a subsidiary, Euro Cargo Rail, to operate in Continental Europe. They sent these locos across to start the company off as they felt they were surplus to their requirements for their UK operations.
ça devrait être interdit de rouler en France sous caténaire ces énormes locomotives diesel qui polluent alors qu'on reforme des BB26000 et autres électriques qui sont d’être usées...
The class 58 was an extremely good locomotive, but at least we can enjoy the class70 now instead as they are very similar and can sound good as well. Class 66/2 ? Not a fan of these at all, a very boring locomotive to watch even though they have definitely have got a lot of pulling power
Back in the summer I was watching the RailCam in Lyon and saw 66222 in maroon EWS livery hauling a north-bound freight over the bridge.
Wow! These UK locomotives in France were still alive. I could see them moving, hear their subdued grunt, as their diesel engine hearts throbbed.

There is probably about 50 class 66s working abroad
They're 66/0s (66001-66249)
There isn't a 66/2 sub class
Great video!
Seen 66s on banking duty on the way up to the Frejus at Modane
hi, pity about the class 58s lying there, where is the 58 preservation group ? in all this.a spare power unit refurbished is useful
How did they get there? Were they hauled through the Channel Tunnel?
Yes - They were moved through the channel tunnel.
@@trainsplanes Thanks!
I suppose this to be a very bizarre question but how did they end up in France in the first place?

They were used for all the associated trains needed for the building of this , most of the 37s were returned to the UK but that was not the case for the 58s.

There is no reciprocal situation here, how many French locos do you see here in Blighty?
Too big, different loading gauge.
How come those pommy EMD's in Wisconsin Central colours are in France ?? ( replacing those old pommy locos in the dead line ? )
Cheers from Australia.

Somewhat less than scintillating viewing!
do we have a shortage of locos, some companies have a shortage, db clearly have way to many
DB have plenty to spare most of the time - A visit to Toton is never usually short of locos stabled.
I wouldn't call them UK locos just because they used to work in the UK. Were all those 66's made in Canada?

DB Cargo have too many locos in the UK - They were moved across to be run by Euro Cargo Rail.
