    I'm actually all for celebrity blackout because I am sick and tired of these celebrities acting like they are above everyone else just because they're rich and famous; not to mention they constantly are not practicing on what they freaking preach because they expect their loyal fans to do it for them!
    They keep forgetting that we are the ones who made them rich and famous in the first place!
    It really does feel like the hunger games mixed with aristocracy!

    Oh speaking of Aaliyah, one stan said I don't respect Aaliyah because this other UA-cam channel named "Aleeyah" was posting all her videos (interviews, audios, music videos, etc.) and I said in the comments that the channel is keeping her legacy alive, along with her fans and this guy continued to disrespect me, saying I don't respect her and my life is a joke.

    I find it refreshing..as even for a moment fans are able to realize celebrities breathe the same air as us regular folk. Like you Tony I used to be a huge stan of MJ and to an extent I still am today, however as time goes on and maturity happens I began to see celebs as mere humans who despite their major successes tend to pay a hefty price in the end. Its unfortunate however to keep my humility in tact I had to ask myself if I had the chance would I truly want to trade places with a celebrity...

    Unfollowing celebrities is not enough. If people wanna make change they need to stop buying celebrity products, listening to their music, buying concert tickets, going to the movies, cancel every subscription etc.
    People won’t do that because we all enjoy some form of entertainment.

    Celebrities are people;
    and the only stars are
    in the sky. Unfortunately there was a time, I maybe use to put them
    on a pedestal. However when you know better, you do better. There are still some I admirer. However I stopped calling myself a fan,years ago.
    I've read comments in the past,where the audience was annoyed with celebrities takes on politics. But.. I guess nowadays the audience wants to hear more; from celebrities on global issues.

    Even if it is performative, I hope we can move away from buying things just because they are a certain brand or made by a certain celebrity. I hope that that's some good that can come from this.

  • @britbritnicole9211
    @britbritnicole9211 Місяць тому +30

    This to me is very performative and unnecessary. People treat celebrities like they’re what’s wrong with the world when it it’s just a title. When I was growing up, we did not act like this towards celebrities. We actually appreciate and respected their work now. Everybody wants to trash on them, especially over something like this. I don’t think anybody is obligated to speak on something they don’t understand or have knowledge in. They’re not comfortable talking about. People expect celebrities to jump on everything and some of them just don’t feel comfortable doing that, and that should be ok.This doesn’t do anything but create more distractions

    • @TonyTurner
      @TonyTurner  Місяць тому +10

      Those are fair points ‼ Because at the end of the day, these are celebrities known for certain things not politicians.

    • @lordfreerealestate8302
      @lordfreerealestate8302 Місяць тому +4

      I don't think we should trash creative people unnecessarily, but we can hold them accountable - esp since wealth inequality and climate change are big problems.
      It also depends on the person. Have celebs like, say, the Kardashians actually contributed anything meaningful to society at all? No. Their clothing brands were made by slave labor, they run their private jets like crazy, and they have never had any achievements other than being born wealthy already.
      I have mixed feelings about this movement.

    I had read an interesting comment on another video regarding this. It stated that even if the celebrity blockout "works", in the long run nothing changed because people already treat influencers like celebrities. So it will just be people moving from one thing to another, rather than stopping anything.
    There are already many people who treat even small influencers the same as celebrities, buying everything they promote, having a deep parasocial relationship with said person, have the same expectations of them as they do celebrities, etc.

    Honestly, the moment people stop putting celebrities on pedestals, you get to see that they're just people. I do think having them talk about pressing issues help educate those who use them as an escape; but time and time again we see that these celebrities are so driven by money that they get blinded by it.
    I'm kind of hoping people don't fall for their performative activism and let these celebrities fall to obscurity.

    Great video bro!
    It's too toxic and dangerous. I have a problem with people of toxic fan bases have no boundaries. Personally, I experienced toxic fans with their "self-entitlement" and lack of "empathy". People are human beings literally. I will say people just love controversy nowadays. Everything is a "big deal" and people just like drama. I feel celebrities should just be themselves and they can do it all. Having a gift and passion while balancing it is the way to go. They do have the right to live normal lives. There a few cool ones and a few Jeepers Creepers ones. With that being said it's all about boundaries. This is insightful. I pretty much look at it like this boundaries are important despite the celebrity media and social media climate. 💯

    I have mixed feelings.
    We need to stop expecting the wealthy (including celebs and entertainers) to solve the world’s problems. I think this reinforces the parasocial relationship, worship, and creates a belief that the wealthy should still hold all the power of change. I think Taylor Swift fans, for instance, viewed her as a social justice hero, feminist, and role model. She isn’t going to save women or the world, she’s just a pop star. A lot of celebs have had very bad - or harmful - takes on the issues they voiced upon. Some came across as performative. Some end up being hypocritical, like Taylor Swift voicing against climate change but being the top celeb polluter. I think it’s okay for not every opinion to be public. As for charity, most celebs do that already, but charity won’t solve the world’s problems ... in fact, the charitable industrial complex has been criticized as REINFORCING wealth inequality. It kind of exists for the wealthy to make themselves look like heroes and get praised while getting large tax deductions. Poverty Inc is a great documentary on the subject.
    I took issue with the Met Gala because it promotes the luxury fashion industry, which is environmentally awful, based on slave labor, and can anyone justify spending $10k on a dress when people are starving? The Met Gala (even if I appreciate fashion design as an art form) is sponsored by major fashion corporations and other corporations, and it’s pretty much one big lavish advertisement.
    I’d focus most of this energy, however, on the worst offenders of harm: politicians like Trump or billionaires like Bezos, Musk, and Rupert Murdoch. The social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, UA-cam, and bad news outlets that have failed to act against hate and disinformation being promoted. Massive corporations like weapons companies that are fueling and profiting from the wars, or companies like Amazon that exploit workers and kill the planet.
    All in all, I don’t know that this movement will have much impact or not.

    This might be one of the few good things to come out of the “free-Palestine” movement. However, I also don’t think that celebrities should always be pressured to speak on such hot button issues because who is to say that they’re educated on the topic? This is especially true for the Israel/Palestine issue that is not as black and white as many people have been led to believe. A lot of these celebrities also probably don’t want to alienate the Jewish or Arab portions of their audience , which is understandable.

    I’ve never understood some peoples obsession with celebrities. Like some fans know the entire life story of their favorite celebrities, including any beef they have with other people & celebrities. It gets really creepy with some people.
    I’m always sad when one of my faves ends up not being a good person. Like apparently Tara Strong one of my favorite VA’s is racist and then tried playing the race/ethnicity card (Jewish) to complain about being fired from a cartoon even though one of the creators is also the same race/ethnicity.

    This celebrity block out went from a fantastic idea to more so self centered and having bragging points on who has better morals than this celebrity.
    I don't follow celebs like that, so this was very easy for me but i noticed that the celeb block wennt from lets block zionist celebs or celebs who been silent about whats going on in Palestine, Congo, Sundan, etc to now its "haha im more morally right than this celeb"
    And i noticed these lists don't even have actual Zionists on it, they have celebritiies who has a history of being pro palestine.
    I don't get how Amy Schumer isn't on these list barely and she's said some horrible things, supporting ongoing genocide but Jenna Ortega, who's been speaking out since she was a teenager on disney and even lost jobs for it is on there.
    Like i was much here for the block but its so idiotic to me now.
