That might have something to do with the fact that the value of X for a spell in the stack is the value of land used to pay for X, whereas anywhere else X is 0. So therefore when you copy a card on the stack (or anywhere else for that matter) it uses the value of X based on where it exists.
THANK YOU DESOLATOR! you helped me win an EDH tournament by bring up the rules on spell cloning, BEHOLD! THE GLORY OF SIMIC! thank you desolator, my opponent litterally rage quit
I'm still confused on the whenever u "cast or copy" an instant or sorcery because u have to cast an instant like fork to then copy another instant or sorcery spell.
Hi Thanks. Did you say Beholder Elephant deck? Where can we see those decks of yours you refer to? Would love to see the details. Thanks as a newbie I'm learning loads from your amazing series!
This is the way I kinda see it: You say, I want to cast this spell. The card goes into a Cast zone. You then pay it's mana cost and anything else it says 'when you cast'. (If you can't then I guess it would just go back to your hand?) It then puts a virtual copy of itself onto the Stack with X and options and what-not set to values, and the card itself stays in the Cast zone until it resolves, then to the graveyard. For Stack Copies, you copy the virtual card on the stack, with all its values set. For imprint you put a copy of the exiled card in the Cast zone, and the Scepter lets you ignore the mana cost but not any other cast costs. It's only when ALL the costs are met it puts it's virtual copy onto the Stack.
Now I've been told for dual face cards like research/development u can target one of the cards and have the option to cast either. But not both is it true?
So if I copied a Groundswell with landfall triggered while it was on the stack, does the copy also copy the landfall trigger since it is a part of the spell?
here's the official wording for additional costs: "Because you’re already casting the spell using an alternative cost (by casting it without paying its mana cost), you can’t pay any other alternative costs for the card. You can pay additional costs, such as kicker costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those". (Gatherer page for Isochron)
Mirrorwing and Zada don't really count for what he was talking about... But Geistblast is an amazing card that I love and one that he definitely should have mentioned.
I am still a bit confused. Let's say I cast shock first and then cast grapeshot, I can select a new target for my copied shock and this copied shock will deal damage, right?
I would assume yes because Storm count is equal to the amount of Spells cast in a turn prior to the casting of the spell. It's not like counters on it that are triggered it retroactively counts.
Joe Mamone He means that the storm count of the already casted card would increase but not affect that cards effect, because it only considers the spells casted before itself as storm countable, but the copie is casted afterwards and therfore should have more counters since you use a spell to copy it. I'm still not sure whats correct though.
Joe Mamone But you need a to cast a spell to create a copy, wich means storm gets triggered. Now you have 2 storm counts, the original spell at lets say 6 and the copy with 7, thats the nature of storm. But copies are an exact copy, so what overwrites the other?
Hey desolater, I started playing magic last year when battle for zendikar came out. Of course being new I wasn't that good and I knew I could make a better deck. I stopped playing In January and recently I've started to get back into magic. I've watched your mtg mistakes videos and other videos and now I know more stuff then before. I like your vids so I subscribed. I was just wondering if you could help me make a standard deck on a budget of $20 I know it's not a lot but I just need a new deck as most of my cards are going out of rotation soon. Oh and by the way tomorrow is an fmn at my shop so hopefully I do well playing from a long break.
+DesolatorMagic yea I just watched that video after I made that comment. Seems legit tomorrow I'll go build it before my fmn starts. But still keep up the good work, your vids are awesome! Wish me good luck!
No it's a side set modern only allows core sets but if a card is already modern legal you can use the eternal and modern masters versions or any other printing of said cards.
I didn't, yes everything in modern masters is Modern legal but not because it was printed in Modern Masters they were legal before hand but none of that really matters what matters is Eternal Masters nothing in that set was made Modern legal from being printed for that set but that's not to say that all cards in that set aren't Modern legal but if they are Modern legal they were so already before the set was made same with cards in Modern Masters or anyother non core set.
What are we arguing about? yes YOU didn't mention Eternal masters but wat tambor did who was asking if cards in BOTH Eternal and Modern Masters were legal in Modern which I answered yes for every card in Modern Masters and yes/no for Eternal Masters as while some are not all of them are and anyone that is or was legal in Modern were so before those three sets were released
Where did you hear about Pork Rinds and Benadryl? That sounds really weird, and I've never had benadryl act weird with any food or medicine. I'm really curious to know
A copied spell is not cast (unless stated otherwise, like Isochron Scepter). When a spell is cast, several parameters need to be specified. A copied spell retains all those parameters, unless stated otherwise.
ok i'm useing brain in the jar to cast remorseless punishment err actived ability ut it does say cast well anyways i pay 2 and blue and exile giestblast from my graveyard to copy remorseless punishment will it's stilll on the stack yay take 20 dmg i will gg :)
Like I give a crap. There are a certain percentage of whiners with bad attitudes. I'm sure you've met some while playing MTG. I DO NOT care about some people's opinions of me and most live stream viewers are petty assholes with nothing better to do but complain about everything in the chat and act so superior and arrogant. They're a disease.
Lol first person to see me at a large event and start threatening me is going to end up with a really cool "Desolator kickboxing demo" video posted on someone else's video and a VERY injured "fan" lol.
"Don't take benadryl, trip on pork rimes then attack your dresser and fall on your floor"
Best advice I've ever gotten
Crazy combo. Turn 2 play ornithopter. Fatalpush it. Swansong the fatal push. Wow 2/2 bird. Game breaking!
You still get the instant or spell trigger for "casting" reverberate or fork the spell, correct? Just not for the copy it creates?
I'm still confused on the whenever u "cast or copy" an instant or sorcery because u have to cast an instant like fork to then copy another instant or sorcery spell.
if you Copy lets say a retrace spell like Call the Skybreaker you cast from your graveyard do you have to discard a land?
Hi Thanks. Did you say Beholder Elephant deck? Where can we see those decks of yours you refer to? Would love to see the details. Thanks as a newbie I'm learning loads from your amazing series!
Beholder Alpha 3.0. It's on my channel under the decks playlist or just use the channel search. I doubt it's terribly competitive anymore though.
This is the way I kinda see it:
You say, I want to cast this spell. The card goes into a Cast zone. You then pay it's mana cost and anything else it says 'when you cast'. (If you can't then I guess it would just go back to your hand?) On mode spells don't you choose the mode as it resolves like in your earlier video about choose on a spell.
but i wanted to know if you countered the spell that was going to be countered, does that drop the copy of the spell?
Now I've been told for dual face cards like research/development u can target one of the cards and have the option to cast either. But not both is it true?
Isochron Scepter and Silence was always fun.
Hey Desolator can you make a Mono-White Lifegain with Felidar Sovereign as an Alt. Win-Con
My first deck was a Melek Izzet Paragon deck, so I know how this works. :)
So if I copied a Groundswell with landfall triggered while it was on the stack, does the copy also copy the landfall trigger since it is a part of the spell?
isochron sceptor + fog no more blockers needed
Philipp Lyanguzov Fucking degenerate
I’m sorry that was rude
I know this is basic, but I still see it messed up a lot. Can you talk about summoning sickness?
Nice new background!
As you mentioned wearing a seat belt I'm in my car with my seatbelt on... you keep doing this
Lol I'm going to specifically say "Ryan Urban" next video :P Oh and you'll be like wait a minute...did he film that inside my house?
Haha alright Des
“I wish they would reprint counterspell”
Ahh, only 4 years too early.
here's the official wording for additional costs: "Because you’re already casting the spell using an alternative cost (by casting it without paying its mana cost), you can’t pay any other alternative costs for the card. You can pay additional costs, such as kicker costs. If the card has any mandatory additional costs, you must pay those". (Gatherer page for Isochron)
Great stuff. I know I hate reminding my play group how spells work.
Geistblast, Mirrorpool, Mirrorwing Dragon, Psychic Rebuttal, Pyromancer's goggles, Zada Hedron Grinder, 6 spell copiers in standard.
Mirrorwing and Zada don't really count for what he was talking about... But Geistblast is an amazing card that I love and one that he definitely should have mentioned.
It might have already been asked what would be the rules on replicate
what block is the scepter from?
A quick google search would've told you right away man... Mirrodin.
I am still a bit confused. Let's say I cast shock first and then cast grapeshot, I can select a new target for my copied shock and this copied shock will deal damage, right?
Yeah
@@DesolatorMagic so a copied manamorphose can also get you two mana you selected when casting the original one?
If you're copying a storm spell, does the storm count go up sonce you use a spell to clone it
I would assume yes because Storm count is equal to the amount of Spells cast in a turn prior to the casting of the spell. It's not like counters on it that are triggered it retroactively counts.
However, storm (the effect) states that you cast it again for each other spell cast this turn, implying it should work.
Joe Mamone It would go up by one since you casted a spell to copy it though.
Joe Mamone He means that the storm count of the already casted card would increase but not affect that cards effect, because it only considers the spells casted before itself as storm countable, but the copie is casted afterwards and therfore should have more counters since you use a spell to copy it.

Definitely my Mr Nibbles deck from a few vids back. The deck is practically unbeatable.
+DesolatorMagic yea I just watched that video after I made that comment. Seems legit tomorrow I'll go build it before my fmn starts. But still keep up the good work, your vids are awesome! Wish me good luck!

Are reprint sets like modern and eternal masters modern legal?

Well done on covering this. I have to be honest, I think of Twincast instead of Reverberate.
My F"Ed up brain read that as twincest......
My favorite clone for spells is Eye Of The Storm from Ravnica
Where did you hear about Pork Rinds and Benadryl?
That sounds really weird, and I've never had benadryl act weird with any food or medicine.
I'm really curious to know
dat pills' secondary effects thou lol
I need to add Geistblast to your list of cloning spells. Not the best, but it will stay in standard ^^
That Final tip LoL!
That was spectacular.I thin I have some pork rinds too.....

Funny story, I was watching one of your videos and my roommate was like is that Ross from friends so I guess you really do sound Luke david schwimmer
ok i'm useing brain in the jar to cast remorseless punishment err actived ability ut it does say cast well anyways i pay 2 and blue and exile giestblast from my graveyard to copy remorseless punishment will it's stilll on the stack yay take 20 dmg i will gg :)
