    surprisingly yes. both did very well and would provide good eye protection in sport. I'm a bit of an Oakley fanboy but would now wear Adidas for sport.

    Polycarbonate is the key; highly tough, impact and penetration resistant. Many mirror/style coatings are not durable and are very prone to scratching. Some add a scratch resistant layer as well, as polycarbonate is tough but not super hard/scratch resistant. Glass and cheap / fake plastic lenses are dangerous for any recreational activity.

    These are the best sunglasses made I'm 53 years old and have worked in a few dangerous places.from Fort Campbell ,home of the 101st Air Born . I was the lead electrician for the building of the Black-hawk helicopter simulator building, to converting a artillery firing range to a pop up target firing range,I'm not sure how many pieces of unexploaded ordinance that we dug up ,I was on a first name bases with the guys from the Department of defense bomb disposal unit. They were a great bunch of guys that were great at doing what they are trained to do and quick to get it done ,it was so bad that they had to build us a bunker and bring up some kind of explosive and put it around the device and blow it in place for the next week I think they thought my name was" Run " And that's what I did till Friday when I got my check and noticed that I had went from almost 31.00 an hr. to 11.00 an hr. because it was a prevailing wage job.fort Campbell is 1/2 in Ky. & 1/2 in Tennessee and it does not pay near as good,so I made a phone call and was on my way Crane Navel Base. but I've always had my Oakley's Blades in them days,to Flaxs 2.0 XL today.I can steal see a great deal on my glasses and it is still Oakley's and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

    Glass lenses and polycarbonate ones are made for different purposes. Glass lenses offers better scratch protection but doesn't offer any impact protection.

    hia. great vid. so from the perspective of the watcher, who cannot see up close or hold the different lenses, the adidas looked like they faired the best. is that right?

    can honestly say none of my Oakleys have had the iridium coating come off and had my first pair 15 years ago and still wear them. it can be down to sweat or salty conditions.

      It's their new models, which is suspicious to say the least. I wore M-Frames and M-Frame 2.0s every day in the military for years, including on deployments where I was sweating buckets, and they were excellent. I only had to replace one lens and that was because I had worn it in multiple sandstorms and it was thoroughly scratched. I shot that lens with a shotgun loaded with 00 buck with no penetrations. I was always impressed by the performance- So much so that I upgraded to their 3.0s immediately when they came out. I was out of the military by then and would only wear them once or twice a month. One lens was only worn once, cleaned, and then sat in the hardcase.
      All the lenses started delaminating conveniently just after the warranty expired, and I was told that although they were aware of the issue and had received many complaints, "you're out of luck bud, buy a new pair."
      No, thanks. They're expensive even with mil discounts, so I won't be going back if they're just going to self-destruct if you look at them funny.

    Funny how the glass lenses needed three hits with a hammer and chisel before they shattered. Actually didn't expect they'd be that durable.
    I dont really wear sunglasses for sport so I prefer glass lenses due to them offering superior optical clarity and scratch resistance. But for sports or any scenarios where there is a high risk of impacts, poly is definitely the way to go.

      Ray Ban uses a mix of Poly carbonate and Glass. They have a pretty intense drop test they do themselves. Not quite ANSI standards but 16mm steel ball dropped form 50 inches. I believe this is the european safety standard test. ANSI uses a 24.5mm ball.

      @@sethhlewis you can actually grind the Rayban lenses quite easily with a bench grinder and it does fur similar to polycarbonate lenses

  • @digitalonlyphotos
    @digitalonlyphotos  7 років тому

    The Oakley and Adidas are polycarbonate and the others are probably a cheaper poly and the rayban are glass

    Good video, I realize this is a year and a half old, but I would invest in a camera that shoots in 60 FPS or higher for doing any slowmo, it just looks really bad in 30 FPS slowed down! Also add some sound :)

    Oakley actually uses plutonite which is a much stronger form of polycarbonate. need to be a little bit more descriptive in your videos because Oakley doesn't use just any kind of polycarbonate they created their own called plutonite
