MORE ABOUT THIS CABINET
As mentioned in the video, this Whisky Cabinet is an exploration of ideas and in order to do this, sometimes the usual woodworking rules have to be broken in order to push these boundaries. I will be holding onto this piece for a while so I can see how my ideas hold up over time. But the true intention of this piece has most certainly been accomplished. I wanted a challenge and a challenge is what I got. This piece not only pushed my technical abilities, but also pushed me creatively, and personally.
Let me just clarify. I don’t think this is the most visually pleasing piece I’ve ever made and by no means is it for everyone. It’s clearly a weird looking piece and its whole intention was to explore different woodworking techniques and styles, while breaking the usual 'design' rules.
I’m my opinion some of the most beautiful furniture is the most simple, and for the most part, designing something simple is far more complicated than designing something over the top and complex like this cabinet.
At the end of the day I wanted to create something different that allowed me to learn and progress my skillset as a maker. Personally I feel like I’ve achieved that.
A couple of things to note. Yes the lights turn on when the doors open thanks to a magnetic sensor. Also, this is a whisky cabinet designed to only store 2 or 3 of your favourite bottles. It's not designed to be a storage cabinet.

This is once again woodworking raised to the level of art. A real piece of grace. Every single technical gesture seems to be reachable by me but no it is definitely more difficult than it looks like yet when you do it there is a kind of easiness that emerges. It's driving me crazy but at the same time this gives me the idea of what perseverance is.
The curve becoming the door handle is truly beautiful. The lighting sends it over the top. Functional art. Inspiring.

In awe of this piece and of you. The courage, patience and perseverance to pull something like this off with such great success is mind-boggling. You should win some sort of award. Thank you especially for sharing your mistakes. It was painful to even listen to you talk about as we've all been there many times. Sometimes, you just need to do it over (the legs) and sometimes it becomes an opportunity for something creative (like the miter joints). I love that you showed both. This video so accurately demonstrates all of the highs and lows of woodworking and I just can't thank you enough. I also really appreciated your honesty about the struggles of working by yourself with no timelines or other people looking over your shoulder. Nick, your videos are ALWAYS worth the wait. You were absolutely spot on when you made the comment about a gallery piece, because this is truly that. I don’t know if you have ever entered any furniture contests that some high end furniture magazines do, and if you haven’t you most certainly should. I made an open liquor wall mounted cabinet for a friend that I tested myself with by doing some things that I had never tried before such as a blind dado for a shelf, corner dowels for an accent and no metal fasteners and using my scroll saw to make the monogram from red oak. Normally, at this point I would come up with a single word to describe this piece of art, but Nick I have no words because it is beautiful

21:46, where you talk about mistakes.. One of the best pieces of advice/ philosophy of making that I learned at Art School from my Painting teacher, the late Bob Millis, was 'Don't be precious about your work, remember the sage words of Bob Ross, there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents'. It took me quite a few years and many a Guitar build that ended up either learning to fly or residing in the corner of shame for me to fully grasp the meaning. But I reckon you have come to the realisation that those mistakes are what makes you a better maker.
That cabinet built is insane! I was really looking forward to the upcoming video and it is 100% successful! You are a great source of inspiration for me, always reminding me how beautiful creativity is. Thank you for sharing yours with us and also your thoughts. The ups and downs that I, and I'm sure many others as well, can relate to.

I didn't realize how important it was until I saw that the upper part was in fact the handle... so absolutely no room for any mistake. Absolutely jaw-dropping Nick. I have 3 takeaways I would like to incorporate into my furniture:
1. The detail with the through tendons with the saddle template and router bit.
2. the use of stained/dyed accent pieces.
3. Tonise more bending forms to give my furniture a “pop” fresh look.

absolutely gorgeous! even though I was not the one going through the ups and downs of this project. I could feel the pain and worry at every step. I recently finished a piece for my daughter that was 13 years in the making, and I agonized over every step. Plus, mine was on a part time basis and sat for a number of years untouched. Your Piece is truly museum quality and inspirational.
A hobbyist woodworker here...Sir you are true master! What an amazing piece of art! You have no idea how much I have waited for this video...the amount of skill and perfection is something to learn from. You inspire me just like Joseph Walsh inspired you..I have followed his works as well and I am working on a dining table that is made almost entirely of steam bent laminated curves that is are overwhelming with the amount of curves and different angles involved especially when joining together. Learning from your videos is an honour. On this cabinet itself I simply can't think of a way to make it look better, but if I may comment (and I could be absolutely wrong here) I think your videos could use more lighting. That being said, it is nothing major as this could be just me. But man is this cabinet a beauty to the eye! Thank you for sharing your experience!

Have to comment on an aspect of this video build -- specifically the accompanying narrative -- that is uncomfortable: whining. The statement may have passed without much notice, but it stood out starkly to me. As someone who understood immediately what you were talking about at the absolute deepest level of my being, I have to say to you that we, as a species, need to do more "whining." It is your apology for it that is the _problem_, not the "whining" itself. As humans, we have been forged to believe that admitting to mistakes, imperfections and weaknesses is taboo ... wrong ... weak. And this leads to an apology for whining. I am fighting this as well, and I am grateful at a level I believe you know for your putting it out there to hundreds of thousands of people. Eventually, together, we will turn the "wrongful" tide.

The curious thing is that the very essence of the human experience is our malleability, our ability to bend without breaking. As a social species this is very important because every compromise in a relationship or in a society is a little bend away from our own will. And the secret to a happy and social live is to either accept it or find coping mechanisms to deal with it - and whining is (imho) an absolutely proper coping mechanism.
There is nothing worse than people playpretending confidence.

Wow, just wow! Beautiful design and workmanship, and I think you're treatment of the 'cock-up' on the mitred corners by adding accents might just become the new standard way to show a mitre. 👏👏👏👏👏👏. Thank you for showing us your approach and mentioning the problems you faced, we've all been there and as a luthier, that wood you used for your inset panel has not gone to waste at all, it sets that door off beautifully.
Saw that you've posted on You Tube. Your evolution of the build is something I truly enjoy. Came to similar conclusion as I'm later in my life. CNC machines make individual small work non competitive when doing it by hand. So I make presents of small work as my work is always appreciated and not compared as the shopper might do, and I've wanted to build what's in my head for the longest time. Your work is inspiring, and motivating. Thankyou !

Nick - I relate to the topic of this video so much. I grew up in a high-end furniture/cabinet business (my dad's) and have been making things since I was a teenager. I briefly did it professionally in college but decided to go into STEM instead. So now I have the perfectionist expectations of having seen amazing world-class furniture being built and the perfectionist tendencies of a scientist...needless to say I really struggle to build things that I am happy with and always find myself abandoning projects because of mistakes and oversights. It's nice to hear a professional talk about going through the same mental gymnastics, I don't think it gets covered enough (speaking of UA-cam videos that I wish were made more!). Always love your work and videos.
