That's a good point because in the game they are all robots including Smithy himself. The closest candidate to anyone in the game that could have created Smithy was another interdimensional entity and the only other character in the game that fits that bill is Culex or the unseen Dark Mage he works for.

In Mario wiki Smithy actually resembles Santa clause there might be a connection between them maybe Santa clause created Smithy to help him build toys and make a factory but something happened to him that turned him into evil person and now he is creating weapon.

No. Cloud in Smash if anything could mean that Square Enix might use the NX as a platform for Final Fantasy 7 Re-imagined. I know we all want a true sequel to Super Mario RPG but we just got to live with the facts. The closest thing we ever got to a sequel was Paper Mario/Mario's Story for the N64. A spiritual successor is better then nothing.

No, he has a point. Even the Cybertonians technically have a creator in the form of the All-Spark, which "wakes up" inert technology.
This is basically what Super Mario Bros Z was implying. The Axem Rangers got upgraded, and if Alvin ever finishes his first saga, Smithy would be the villain of the next.

I think it may be a little naive to assume there was only one "Smithy" to start with. I mean, he runs one factory in an entire dimension. Presumably, his entire dimension did not come into existence just to support one factory, to invade one world (or one world at a time). If our Smithy's factory is making monsters, it seems safe to assume it's making them _out_ of something, which means that there's either more "dimension" on Smithy's side than just the factory and a basement made out of Smithy heads, or he has people in some third dimension collecting materials.
In the same way that Smithy's factory had a whole hierarchy of foremen and managers operating it, it makes sense to me Smithy himself could just be some mid-level functionary in an even larger organization. Will it ever make a second attempt at some Mario world? That depends on what the organization is after: three or four or five dudes took out a whole factory unit, "and one of them was a doll, I think." Not exactly low-hanging fruit. Which means that if Smithy's bosses ever finish up with every other, easier dimension, they'll be back for sure (if they exist). But that sounds like a pretty long wait, so it's probably not something Mario, et al., needs to worry about. But when they _do_ turn up, they'll be that much stronger, having conquered every world presumed to be less formidable than the Super Mario RPG Donut Land.
If they're after Star Pieces, though, it's less clear. If there are other Star Roads (which we know there are since we've _been there in other Mario games_), then probably Star Pieces could be collected there, too. If not, it seems like some ambitious creep would probably find Smithy's notes and try again.
If it's about revenge, and who knows- maybe Smithy had friends of his own-- then probably for sure they'll be back. Maybe it'll just be a haggard, reborn Smithy who's just pissed off 'cuz you cost him his job, and now he has nothing but spare time.
Tough call.
Here is the thing. You would expect an army of robots would have some sort of genius that created them all be behind everything but then you get to their boss and he himself is a robot as well. A giant boiler monster with both a hammer and a gun for hands. So the real question is if Smithy created his gang then who created Smithy as he himself is mechanical as well. The closest thing to a tech savvy bad guy I could think of in the Mario series as of now is Fawful but Fawful is an egotist. He builds all his machines in his image. Heck his final weapon in Superstar Saga is a dome crafted in the likeness of his face. The other candidate I could think of is Grodus but spoiler alert. Grodus is a machine as well. After he reforms and settles with Lord Crump in Poshley Heights it's revealed his computer based brain is able to operate without a body meaning the computer dome is the true Grodus and his X-Naut body was an artificial construct for his head. The only 2 possible candidates left are the Shroobs and Tatanga. I am leaning more towards Shroobs though. Tatanga I think is too loyal to Wario to build something like Smithy.
I feel like the materials are probably gathered from conquered worlds in an endless cycle. As for who created Smithy, it's possible that they are no longer around. Smithy makes no real mention of a master or anything. It's possible that Smithy's world(is it really a dimension all it's own if Exor is the portal? How did Exor get there then? Gene assumes it is another dimension but would it not be simpler to assume that it is simply another planet far away?) was the first he conquered.

A problem to this theory: Smithy needed Smelter to make machines, Smelter needed resources to smelt but... the Smelter and the factory's floor collapsed because Smithy slammed the floor. Smithy was absent in Yoshi's Island so the invasion took AT LEAST the entire childhood of Mario, and there's no one to rebuild Smithy (Smithy made all the bosses himself) and he needed something as powerful as Exor to destroy the star road. Now the Star road knows about Smithy and can use their magic to stop him BEFORE Exor can destroy the road again.
What do you mean the entire childhood of Mario? These events happens when Mario is an adult. Also aren't all machines a creation of Smithy? Pretty sure he would be able to create another smelter. How you ask? Pretty simple, remember Smithy final form changes to whatever he seems fit? If the dude can use his hammer to mold his head int anything including a full war tank, why wouldn't he turn his head into a smelter and then proceed again with everything?

@@Yokai_Yuri Smithy is an ancient being (and probably the last of a series of prototypes because of all the heads in his real lair) known by the star road denizens and just needed some machinery because it took him just days to assemble an army, maybe months, why not do it before, when Mario was a baby? Unless Exxor is super time consuming to make.
And yes, Smithy can smash his hammer to change the form of machines already built but couldn't generate another smelter out of thin air (or his head), as he would have done it in the final battle making it nearly impossible to win.

I've actually thought a lot about Super Mario RPG in the past, and what meanings might hide behind this battle between fairytale heroes and factory-made weapons.
To get to your theory, it makes me wonder if all of those Smithy bodies are all of Smithy's failed attempts to conquer worlds... or new versions waiting to be activated. Maybe the large head in the background is the "real" Smithy?

actually if you think about it Smithy is the ultimate Super Mario Villain in all the franchise, the only one that makes the entire world join against him and the one far more powerfull than bowser. just think, for Mario defeating Bowser is just the daily homework (Galaxy was more a challenge but still Bowser was not enough Match for him). But Smithy was other thing he was the ultimate enemy of the world and the battle with him was for the fate of earth and universe, for all or nothing and yes i'm overreacting but yeah he was cool :v
That's kind of like the Shroobs from Partners in Time. They had no allies, they were a genocidal race, only knowing to destroy.
Literally everyone was against the shroobs and they were a major problem.
Bowser may not have joined up with Mario to fight, but Baby Bowser DID save everyone at peach's castle when the shroobs appeared.

I found a prequel to Super Mario RPG called Legend of the Axem Rangers but it's not official. It was fan made. A guy called An Axem Ranger made the game.

Fawful blew up inside of Bowser, try to eradicate Mario & Luigi. Turns out that his final explosion sent everyone inside of Bowser's body out to freedom. So.. Fawful isn't alive. He literally blew up XD
He could obviously be revived. I mean, he exploded INSIDE of Bowser, so all of his particles are cramped in there. Alphadream COULD revive him, but who knows.
+iAnimate38 At the same time, when Fawful blew up, he turned into a gaseous state that expelled everyone from Bowser's body through his mouth. With that said, after the expulsion stops, we never see the gas disintegrate. It just flies into the air... and it's gone. With no visual clues of it gone, those gas particles could still be lurking around somewhere, waiting to infect someone.

Super Mario rpg 2 is superstar saga. In Japan
Actually no. Paper Mario is Super Mario RPG 2 because it was called that when it was in development but they had to change the game because Square at the time did not want to get involved in making the game so Nintendo had their Intelligent Systems division re-work Super Mario RPG 2 into Paper Mario so therefore by extension Thousand Year Door is Super Mario RPG 3 and Super Paper Mario is Super Mario RPG 4 and as for Sticker Star...well it's just Sticker Star because it's not an RPG LOL.
Mario and Luigi is a spinoff RPG series from the main Mario RPG series that is the Paper Mario games (not counting Sticker Star). Mario and Luigi RPG 1 was Superstar Saga and so forth. The most recent canon installment for the Mario and Luigi RPG games was Mario & Luigi RPG 4 Dream Team since Alpha Dream does not consider Paper Jam canon to the M&L universe as it's a crossover game.

I was waiting for someone to make a theory about this! I always thought Smithy was just watching his clone battle Mario. When I saw al the Smithy heads I thought that there were multiple versions of him.

Until watching this vid recently, I never gave this theory much thought. They did say that there are always possibilities. So, if Nintendo and Square Enix wanted, they could very well bring Smithy and his cronies back to strike again. How they do it may have a more severe impact than before, not only because of revenge, but because they have some more cards to play than before.

Browsing the comment section, we now have the question who created Smithy. Just a weird hypothesis: What if Smithy was originally a biological man who forged himself a machine body and transferred his mind into it to become immortal (with loads of reserve bodies)? Now we still have the question how the mind can be transferred. I don't know HOW it works, but judging from Mack, we can assume THAT it works somehow. It's a fantasy world, after all.
The remake fixed this. Because after the 2nd phase of the Smithy battle, when Smithy explodes, all the other Smithy heads get destroyed along with Smithy
Can we just talk about how good the grafix in Mario RPG were?
Perhaps the newly created Mack's would be informed of what they are, their goals, and information relevant to that. If the Mack's are told to watch out for Mario because he destroyed they first one, it would be simple for the next Mack to mess with Mario in this way saying that he is "back".

It’s insane to think that all this time later, this theory can be laid to rest. In the remake, the background is completely different. Kinda sad about it actually. Even as a kid, I thought Smithy was still alive due to that head in the background staring at you as Geno left.
I'd love to see a full MARIO RPG remake and have it end with a MARVEL style end credit scene showing us either Smithy being re built or showing us that wasn't the real Smithy at all ...so comes MARIO RPG 2!!

Superstar Saga isn't a sequel.
It majorly changed the way battles are played, and the atmosphere and style is different too. Not to mention it's not even made by the same Developers.
If anything, Paper Mario is RPG 2, because it was actually going to be called that, but there was copyright issues.

He's also supposedly still intact in the credits alongside Bowyer, Mack, Yaridovich, and probably the Axem Rangers in on the giant axe after Exor vanished. Perhaps they were rebuilt later on, or perhaps in another area of the game? Not sure, that is just my thought.

Seeing this video makes me want to see Smithy make a comeback. There are quite a few villains in the Mario universe that deserve to reappear and get revenge like Fawful tried to back in Bowser's Inside Story.

You are probably right. I see the head room as not so much an indication of the future, but of the past. Those aren't possible spare heads, but the heads of Smithy's already killed.
The question would be was each of them defeated by a previous Mario equivalent one at a time, or were they a bunch of Smithy models mass killed (anhiliation of the model series with Smithy potentially being the lone survivor)?
[SPOILERS FOR THE REMAKE ON SWITCH]
In the switch remake, after smithy dies in the explosion, during the custecene that follows we see the party standing in the factory, now appearing to be in a more ruined state (the sun is shining through the roof and gears are scattered around) so it's possible that the factory is out of commission
OTOH they also kept that little sequence of him and his minions popping up the parade during the credits, so... hmmmm
This is definitely one of those games that needed a sequel.
It's one thing to rebuild what's essentially a robot, even one that has a consciousness and personality, but it's another to rebuild a bridge between universes. It's perfectly reasonable that it could be done, since one WAS made, but it would probably be significantly more difficult than what's seen in the factory and it could possibly require a resource that Smithy doesn't have any more of
My god how I have always wished for a direct sequel to this game
I find Smithy an oddly intriguing villain, even though we get next to nothing on his character or backstory or motivations, though that might be part of the intrigue for me. The battlefield where you face his true form is still etched into my memory and raises a number of questions: Who built Smithy? Was he always meant to build weapons of war? Or did he have another purpose long ago and it somehow got corrupted over time?
Was he always a machine? Or was he originally flesh and blood? I raised the question to a friend not long ago if the original Smithy is dead and this is just a robotic duplicate, or if the original found a way to transfer his brain between mechanical bodies as a way to cheat death. Maybe he was once upon a time a humble blacksmith but the reality of death left him so scared he started looking for any way he could to keep it at bay, and this led to him building robot bodies to transfer his soul/mind/whatever into them to prolong his life. However, over time the bodies broke down and he had to keep transferring himself, but the more he did this the more he lost pieces of himself until, finally, we're left with the soulless monster we find in the game.
But this is all just stuff that came to mind and I typed down.

From what I got from replaying the game on the SNES Mini....
0) Smithy seems to have a bunch of Generals. The Axem Rangers, Punchinello, Mack, Bowyer, Yardovich, Exor, and Countdown/Ding-A-Ling. They all seem to have personalities when we first meet them. Hell, Mack ends up running off to tell Smithy that the pieces of Star Road are important to this world. And they all seem to have one mission assigned to them (programmed?). Bowyer and Mack seemed to be assigned to taking over the main seat of the mushroom kingdom (I mean, control the forest in which people need to pass through?), and paralyzing the townsfolk was a great way to have the town out of the way without the infrastructure being destroyed. Yardovich was assigned Seaside Town, and he basically took over without any help. The Axem Rangers were chasing down the star piece that fell into the volcano and decided to take on Mario and company (possibly for the other stars?). Exor was created as a link between the two worlds. Countdown was basically the factory's built in intruder alarm. What I'm saying is that the different creatures that were from Smithy's dimension all have different programmed personalities and purposes. What if Smithy's purpose was to create more of the machine empire's creatures but his programming got screwed up and all he did create were weapons...?
1) In the factory, it seems like Smithy was making "brain dead" versions of the original Generals, after we defeated them. The greyscale replicas don't have dialogue and have more simple boss patterns as well as similar attacks. Maybe it's not 1:1 with the personality being written to the new body. (eg. Smithy could recreate the body but not the "soul".) Or the fact that he was pumping them out at a crazy rate affected the quality of the replicas. Or Smithy simply wanted "muscle" instead of brains.
2) The "managers" that we fight in the factory (in front of the factory line) all say that they were forced to create new soldiers for Smithy, otherwise they'd be scrapped. Seems like they were forced into line by Smithy's threats. So why use sentient creatures to create the other "non-sentient" tools/weapons?
3) The "Smithy Heads" were under the floor of the factory. Could they be discarded "raw" materials? The smelter was bolted down near Smithy's anvil and during the first phase of the boss fight, there would be a flow of molten metal which Smithy would shape. Could Smithy be using his supply of "heads" as raw materials to make the creatures? Remember that the Mario universe here doesn't have a source of metal. Moleville's mines don't seem to be a target for Smithy - so Smithy had to had a supply of metal for his troops. Would also explain why the new versions of the Generals don't have dialogue, they are essentially "not themselves", but a knockoff version created by Smithy with his own body!
4) Or the "Smithy Heads" were a product of the thing that created Smithy himself. Just practice things before hand.

Smithy being also a machine... it could have a master out there, so. Your speculation is good also. But square and nintendo could need to make amends for us getting a remaster of this or a sequel... omg ._.
Also for Mack the reason he remembers I think is that it is Mack's data (the machine equal to a consciousness) and Smithy put his minions data into mass produced machine made bodies. So yeah. Axem Red, Black, Green, Yellow, and Pink, Yaridovich, Mack, Bowyer. Those guys were the same ones you fought the first time. Just in new mass produced bodies with their data being shared among them all. So what's not to say he did this to all his other minions. He could have done this to Boomer (provided of course he did fall apart after hitting the floor though Chandeli-ho implies he escaped so he probably didn't need a new body), Countdown and the Dingalings, Domino, Cloaker, Mad Adder, Earthlink, Clerk, Manager, Director, Factory Chief and heaven forbid Exor. If Exor comes back. Well that's the end of Mario's world as we know it. Exor is the link. The means for Smithy to access other worlds outside his dimension. In other words he could build another Exor and launch another invasion. So while Mario and friends celebrated Smithy is angrily back in his factory in a reconstructed body rebuilding bodies for all his minions and plotting revenge...which probably won't happen because Square Enix doesn't do anything with the Mario RPG characters. Now that I think about it the only boss I think that really died was the cake which Booster swallowed whole. All the rest of them though could come back. Come on Square. What are you waiting for?
Update: Bundt and Raspberry survived the fight. The remake confirms it. You rematch them in the postgame. So never mind. I guess those chefs have powerful food resurrection skills or something.
I suppose you were right Swanky. Smithy came back to another dimension where mario's world has better graphics and hope world domination goes more smoothly this time
Use photoshop to lighten the background and see the details. The giant head in the back is a furnace. The heads on the ground are parts for making more Smithy bots. These other smithy units would have been sent out to other worlds to forge more weapons.

Mario RPG is quite the game.
Not only did it help create the M&L series, but the Paper Mario series.
It also was a funny game, yet had a great plot, fun fighting, lots of secrets, and even hidden bosses.
All from Mario.

Someone could wish for the gateway to be reopened. There's Valentina, Dodo, Booster & Jonathan Johnny Jones. All unlikely candidates. Belome or Croco are a bit more likely but not directly connected to Smithy. I like the idea of Culex & his master, The Dark Mage, using a crystal Culex left behind as a link to open a gateway back into Mario's dimension. The Order of The Dark Knights of Vanda , the members of which share Culexian heritage. Etc. Etc.
Even though Smithy and his followers are alive and constantly rebuilt with new bodies they cannot invade Mario's world because they are trapped in the Smithy Dimension. So therefore Smithy can be rebuilt as well as all his followers but as long as there is no means for him to enter Mushroom World dimension and bridge that gap he's stuck there for eternity in his dark void like dimension. If he escapes though that would be pretty bad. Basically we are talking about a powerful other world artificial intelligence that creates an army of weaponized machines. If Smithy breaks free from his dimension he will probably come back with a much larger invasion force. Not only his old followers but also maybe even make new ones. We are talking about a massive army of weapon based machine robots that would turn the world into a polluted world of metal and weapons. Please Smithy. Stay in your own dimension and have all of your buddies stay as well. We don't want another Smithy Gang invasion.

Yeah if he rebuilds Exor and Exor's new body has the same dimensional capabilities as his old one then yeah they could return. The only hurdle for them returning is copyright of Square Enix.
This is why I think it could be an idea for Kingdom Hearts. The game involves traveling to other worlds, worlds being invaded, and even a world that's implied to not even exist. Plus, there's Culex, who might have some ties to Organization XIII based on his name. All members of Organization XIII have an X added to their name, then the letters are all scrambled up to create a new name for them. In addition, the gummi ship would provide a way to battle Blade.
The primary thing Smithy’s gang would address is destroy Star Road AND take all the pieces, or just destroy it bit by bit, biggest flaw to the invasion was that the shards scattered and Smithy’s gang certainly were having a hard time finding them, to the point of exposing themselves too much for Mario’s cast enough to give them a sense of concern to rush and get all the star pieces before they do. Heck, even thanks to them tracking the pieces down, Mario’s team even managed to solve big problems along the way like the whereabouts of other characters and how to get to Bowsers Castle through the same means they use to get to the volcano. So making too much noise was Smithy’s ultimate demise...hopefully for now because he’s so cool.
I dunno, I always thought that since all of Smithy's gang were weapons, then maybe Smithy's "body" is just a fabrication, and Smithy himself is actually the hammer being used to create the weapons.

In fan-made stuff (such as Super Mario Bros Z) yes, that can. I would love to play a Super Mario RPG 2: The Revenge of Smithy, however I don't think that is actually going to happen. Geno, Mallow, Booster, Frogfusius, Valentina, Smithy and his army, and the rest are in Square-Enix's prison for all eternity...unless SE says they are free to come out once again.

Damn it, I just want to see Geno and the rest of the characters introduced in this game in a new game. It doesn't even need to be a new SMRPG (that would be awesome, though).

I mean, if a sequal were to ever be made, I bet it would be more like one of Smithy's Creations invading Mario's world to resurrect Smithy in some way. Still, it would be interesting to have a sequal nonetheless
