In the early 80s I met him on the North sea ferry from hull to Rotterdam he was on his way to wrestle in Holland a great night out with as you say a true gent 👍
This reporter is ten times tougher than haystacks. First of all...Giant Haystacks couldn't have handled a gentle body slam outside of the ring let alone in a soft and spongey Springey bouncy pro wrestling ring. He slammed this guy as hard as he could on hard ground. Big difference.
Anyone would get hurt being slammed onto a hard floor like that, that isn't pro wrestling, that is a huge man forcefully throwing a small man onto the ground.
I like that this just immediately starts with the bodyslam with no context, as if Giant Haystacks just marched in there unannounced and did it without warning.
The wrestlers you mentioned went for easy targets and non fighters, who all advised that wrestling was scripted. They were not wrong. The part that needed mentioning is the entertainment side, the risks wrestlers take and the athleticism required to do their jobs. It's a balanced argument.
The moral of the story, it seems, is that you can use violence to enforce your views on others. Because nothing in this video or the instances you reference does anything to counter the claim that wrestling is fake. Which is it. Obvioulsy. Yes it is physically demanding. So is paving driveways. But if I said to you "hey man an alien put that driveway in but I fought him off with my laser beam eyes so you are safe now" the fact that putting the driveway in requires physical exertion doesn't in any way change the fact that I am lying and my story is fake. Wrestling, as referenced, is not simply the physicallity of the actions. It's supposedly a sport. But it has pre-determined outcomes and rehearsed matches. We also say that, for example, Die Hard is fake. It didn't really happen. John Mcclaine doesn't even exist. He's just a character Bruce Willis plays. But it still was hard work for Mr Willis to do all those things he did in the film. Doesn't make it real. Why then do wrestling fans need to cling to the belief that it's not fake? Is it because, otherwise, you would have to come to terms with the fact that you enjoy a very sophomoric and low-brow soap opera as if it was mana from heaven?
Watching a man at 6'9+ and 500+lbs do this and hearing that thud was sickening. Yeah the interviewer did suffer broken ribs after this move. Be careful what you ask for folks...(g)
@@blackmetalgoat9060 His stats were always exaggerated, as were many others. In the UK he was billed as 6' 11'' and around 400lbs. In reality he was 6'7'' and around 380lbs.
For the last ten years of his career he was generally announced at around 42 stones, close to 600 pounds. There were times when he definitely looked at least 35 stones imo. Saw him live a few times. Scary character!
Right but they also aren't in a soft bouncy spring loaded wrestling ring. Haystacks couldn't handle being slammed in a ring let alone on that surface. Fullerton ten times tougher than haystacks ever was at any point.

Fellow Cult of Cornette from the UK here! I forgot about this clip. Play acting is basically just like acting in a show or play, so the guy who got slammed had said it was just like a show and no one gets hurt. Giant Haystacks was the real deal back in the 70's & 80's, watch some of his World of Sport matches on UA-cam. Have a good day!
Been looking for this clip for a while….I remember seeing this on an ABC blooper show, possibly “Life’s Most Embarassing Moments”. That’s what the host gets for trash talking the wrestler. 😛
It was a demonstration that was invited by the interviewer who wanted to play off wrestling as silly and fake. Miss us with your pearl clutching “assault” claims. These talk show d-bags still haven’t learned from incidents like this or Hogan/Belzer and still ask wrestlers to perform moves on them for laughter. An Australian morning show just tried to pull the same shit a week or so ago on LA Knight and Grayson Waller, and Waller was having none of it.
Martin Ruane was a nice guy, he had time for fans, he talked to them, signed autographs and was generally a people person but he would not suffer idiots, bad mouthing and bad behaviour. Giant Haystacks was obviously the heel and Martin had that look which fitted being a heel perfectly. I’d suggest this clip looks like a receipt (pay back) possibly for something previously said on or off air. Shirley Crabtree (Big Daddy) on the other hand only interacted with people when the publicity suited him, otherwise he had no time for anyone, he did have quite an ego and liked things done his way so random fans trying to get autographs and photos were not his thing.
Back when wrestling had to be respected and taken seriously. When it was treated as legit. If Haystacks hadn't really slammed him hard, the business would have been exposed.
Does this prove that pro wrestling isn't fake? No. Haystacks slammed the guy down on a hard floor much harder than pro wrestlers ever get slammed in a ring. And if a slam takes place on a hard floor outside of the ring, they're careful to barely drop them at all because no one wants to get slammed on a hard floor. Haystacks only proved that you can get hurt in pro wrestling if you're not careful.
That was not even a full rotation bodyslam, it was intended to hurt the guy with maximum result. Well karma got this walking tub of poo decades later as Big Show beat him senseless
Not really. It was fixed and scripted. Not much you can do to a man that size certainly a few over the top slaps wouldn’t hurt him much. This guy was a true war horse but not well enough to continue thusly he was scripted out of wcw

Apparently Fullerton had a bit of mouth before the program, and haystacks overheard him.
Apparently Haystacks said he really resisted the urge to also do the splash on him as well
I tell you what. He went down with a bang never seen that before on world wide sports
Fullerton learned a very valuable lesson there
The noise he makes while he's being lifted into the air is incredible.
Thats cause his balls were being crushed by GH arms
What a legend Giant Haystacks was.

What I'm amazed is that people years after this demonstration still think you can't get hurt in pro wrestling.

The moral of the story is don't call wrestling fake in front of professionals.
Dr D slapped Stossel and Hogan choked out a presenter.
