Quackers was a much-loved pet Indian Runner Duck who lived at Mapperton in West Dorset, England.
Unfortunately a visitor to the historic house and gardens let her dog off the lead, and the dog attacked Quackers. The dog owner then retrieved the injured duck and wrung its neck before throwing the dead Quackers into the long grass.
There are numerous signs at Mapperton asking visitors to keep their dogs on a lead because of the ducks and chickens. And while accidents can happen, it is upsetting that the dog owner left the scene without saying sorry.
The story of Quackers has touched hearts across the nation, following news articles in several national newspapers and the BBC.

The funds raised will be spent on the creation of a new pond which will attract wild ducks and other wetland species to Mapperton.
We will also plant trees, shrubs and aquatic plants in the pond, alongside a plaque to commemorate Quackers. In this way, we hope that her legacy will be the creation of a new wetland habitat which will provide a refuge for wild ducks and other wildlife for decades to come.

So her dog bites the duck, she strangles the duck, throws the duck's body away to hide evidence, and all of that in front of her child. Beautiful. She's really teaching her child how to be a dignified responsible adult one day.

The "visitor" should be charged for animal cruelty. The dog clearly has a strong prey drive and needs to stay on lead regardless of where they go in public. The states have leads/leash laws in every state.
I agree and that it should be at least reported to the police so that if it came down to it there would be a legal paper trail so to speak. I'm talking about Mapperton reporting it to the police for the record. I believe everything that the woman did was reprehensible. I don't blame the dog We didn't even blame our dogs It's what they are bred to do All I'm saying is that sometimes even the most gentle dog can just do something that's in their DNA that they ordinarily wouldn't. I wasn't trying to make excuses I was trying to reach out as someone who has been through this.

I totally agree, unbelievable behaviour, it takes a tough person to strangle a large duck; should be prosecuted. Appalling demonstration to her child; no wonder people are evolving to be less and less caring. Eventually if something good can come out of this very sad situation, that is something.

Poor duck! Poor you! That “guest” displayed really dreadful behaviour and has taught her son a lesson no one wants him to learn. Denial of responsibility is atrocious.
That is so sad! What is worse is that she may have been injured but not dead until she broke its neck. That animal has only known human kindness her entire life. Who does that? Just who?

I am a subscriber who never comments. However I must say I am just deeply devastated for your family. The country I live in would be pressing criminal charges for animal cruelty against the dog owner.

That's ghastly. A visitor to your home ignored rules, then refused to behave decently or responsibly. Farm animals aren't pets, but we get to know them, like & care for them. What an awful example the offender displayed for her child. You havr my sympathy on this dreadful event.

The perpetrator will most likely not come forward now that it has went viral. She would probably fear the onslaught that will come at her from social media. I hope you can find out who did this, because it was heartless and cruel, especially in front of a child.
They ran away and tried to hide the evidence. There is no way they were coming forward anyway. We can hope that someone may turn them in though.

@@darlenechandler2403 It depends on the laws in the UK. She could argue that she was ending the suffering of the animal. It is possible that the injury was severe and not recoverable. (And no, I am not defending what she did. It was inexcusable. And she couldn't squirm out of her responsibility for not leashing her dog anyway).
@@ohana8535 I too wondered if perhaps it was a "mercy kill", but then the way she flung the poor thing away from sight and fled the scene rather makes me think her only concern was to hide what she had done. It demonstrates a disrespect for life, but also for the owners, and overall speaks of a poor character.

What a horrendous woman and if she is the mother of the young man, she is a horrible mother. The lesson she taught him today was not taking responsibility for your actions, not obeying the rules, and showing no compassion for the animal or its owners. I guess it would be a good idea to involve the Metropolitan police ( animal cruelty is a crime) because the cruel behaviour towards an animal makes me fear for her child, too.

Dear Julie and Luke, Our animals are our family. There are no words for this sort of behavior. Undoubtedly, with all of the media attention, this person is aware of the grief caused by this unthinkable act. My dog and I were attacked during lockdown by a giant shepherd. We were bitten and down on the ground while I screamed for help. The owner came out and called the dog in and that was that. Just left us on the ground. Bloodied we dragged ourselves home. People can be thoughtless but I know from my grief counseling work that there are more good people than there are ones who lack a heart and grace. You are in my thoughts and I hope this will never happen again to an innocent animal on your beautiful estate. Be well guys. I read about this a week or so ago. I straight up cried. I have no words for anyone that could be so cold, so cruel.
Responsible dog owners understand that keeping a dog on a leash when it's outside of its own home is essential. My deepest sympathy actually goes out to the entire Mapperton crew. We owned both ducks and dogs way back when I was growing up and the dogs had been around the ducks for a couple of years and just one day they decided to kill them all. I came home from school and was shocked beyond belief so I understand exactly what you all are going through now so biggest hugs. I honestly think it's fitting that through Quackers death Mapperton is highlighted. Runner ducks are awesome and especially silly to watch. It was really nice to see Nestor in the throwback video. It might still be nice if he could do a wildlife one every now and again. And my last comment is specifically to Julie: You and I picked the same kind of man. Mine would be up no matter what time of night it was vacuuming up bugs. Hornets have absolutely no purpose and especially not being in the house.

I am so sorry for your heartbreak. People are out of control in the world today. My own dog was poisoned to death by an older woman I let into my home out of the kindness of my heart. That was 2 years ago and I still grieve the loss. She was only 2 years old. SHe had 10 week old puppies. I hope the other ducks didn't see what happened. Animals can be traumatized too.

Exactly. I'm so sorry they lost this sweet duck, but I don't understand how some one could see her dog attack it, then watch her wring its neck, and not report that?? Someone had to have seen that for them to know she did that. Otherwise, the dog could have broken the duck's neck in the attack. I'm not condoning what happened if it happened as they say, but I hope they're not assuming too much either. I live in the country and I've seen freak things happen to wildlife. Perhaps they have security cameras that could see what happened, but it sounds like they don't have strong enough evidence in order to press charges. Hopefully they can set up better measures to ensure people follow the rules so that this doesn't happen again 😢

I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot believe what causes people to display such disgusting behavior. Having said that, let us not say "it's good because it does this, or does that for Mapperton". Nor does it look good to have a paid promotion over the death of your pet.
This person's utter disregard for life, and clearly for her own child's mental health, is appalling. I completely understand you being reticent to launch a criminal investigation process, because they can be quite taxing emotionally and financially, but such callous and cruel actions cannot remain unpunished. That poor creature was just minding its own business and didn't deserve to be murdered then thrown away like a piece of trash! Your project of a memorial wetland for Quackers is a wonderful idea! Were I in your shoes, I'd notify your local SPA chapter so she cannot abuse another animal, and make sure to ban this heartless individual from entering your grounds ever again. I've never understood people not keeping their dogs on a leash no matter where you go! You put your dog in jeopardy too! Your dog runs up on mine yours is gone my dog doesn't like other dogs. This was a horrible act, worse lesson for the son! God bless! 😢😢😢

I Pray their heart feels remorse and they contact you to apologize and make amends. Maybe you will consider Not Allowing Pets on your property unless they are a Service Animal with their owner. Thank you my darlings first of all for demonstrating such compassion and kindness to animals in general, I have 9 ducks myself and would be mortified if this happened to one of them. The heartbreak written across your face was upsetting to see and I'm really sorry someone so entitled and disturbed visited your home. I genuinely feel sorry for their child and the type of upbringing they are receiving from an unhinged parent like that.

I've been watching Nestor's sailing videos but it's really interesting to see him when he was a younger guy explaining about the ducks..... He's so informed about the natural world around him.
Sadly a no dogs allowed policy is in order here after this incident, even dogs on a lead can overpower their owners. Unfortunately in this day and age the general public cannot be trusted to abide by anything. It's a shame.
