I am happy to see someone tested it in extreme conditions and showed how it performed in real life. Unlike petrol engines, which can consistently deliver their peak power, in many electric cars, the peak power can be 2 or 3 times their normal power. However, this peak power only lasts for a few minutes before overheating. Manufacturers don't typically mention in ads whether the power is peak or constant and how long it lasts (5 seconds? 30 minutes? 2 hours?). The 145 kW wouldn't last long since the battery is only 1.8 kWh. As for the generator, I'm not sure, but I think I saw somewhere that it's only 45 kW. We know that at speeds less than 60 km/h, only the electric motor pushes the car (the petrol engine only works as a generator and doesn't engage to wheels before 80 km/h). So generally, at low speeds, you have a maximum of 100 kW from the electric motor, and if the battery runs out, you only have around 45 kW max (limited by the generator). However, I understand that this hybrid systems are not designed for the track where you can constantly use its 145 kW. It is useful for running on electric at low speeds to avoid the drawbacks of the petrol engine and gearbox and for running on petrol at high speeds to avoid the limitations of the battery. Some peak performance is available for a short time when needed (overtake).
Track usage is real life? Probably 5 % of cars see a tracks in real life.. what are you talking? If you need this power all the time, I don't want to meet you on the road in real. Bruh.

Easy. It recharges the battery when you decelerate and uses charge when accelerating. Given that the electric motor appears to supply 50% of the total power output and the battery is small, if you spend too much time using the throttle heavily, it appears it can fully discharge the battery. In other words, it is depleting the charge quicker than it is recharging it. It will recover of course but for performance driving clearly you will run out of battery charge at times.

@@ghisalaura7123 cars like this use the normal petrol motor and the electric motor together to accelerate the car. How much of each depends on a whole lot of things including the power demanded and the state of charge of the battery. But ultimately if you demand full power you are draining the battery. When you are decelerating it is recharging the battery and it will depend on how it’s programmed to how it recharges the battery when cruising at steady speed. Obviously this particular car is set up in such a way that you can drain the battery if you drive it very hard around a track like they did here. It will recharge itself quickly enough when you stop driving with a heavy throttle and it is probably not any problem in normal driving.
It's a joke really. In order to advertise ~200HP they messed up the charging of the battery. It gives away too much KW on full throttle so the engine cannot provide enough energy to both recharge and push the car at full throttle. So it's easy to discharge the battery and have massive differences in 0-100 (From 7secs to 12secs) and also not enough power when pressing the throttle from 50 or 60mph. This can be dangerous and very confusing. The gearbox plays a role too, second gear is so long that it slows the acceleration, combined with loss of kw from the battery, sometimes the acceleration suddenly stops to practically almost none. They really need to address this issues.
I am old enough to remember when people used to knock Japanese cars not now , Korean cars the same now a quality product, the same will happen with Chinese cars, they are getting better and better.
Another Australian UA-camr (Productreview cars) did a very thorough test on the hybrid including testing its performance on both flat and hilly conditions and he said it had good performance on the flat, but the hills it really struggled! The other major problem is that around town its very economical, but at highway speeds it actually uses more fuel than the non hybrid model! Add that the hybrid needs 95 octane and unlike some other hybrids that use a turbo, this is naturally aspirated with an Atkinson cycle, while the non hybrid uses 91! That is crazy!
No, the battery is too small. But I think that in sport mode, the petrol engine will keep running to charge the battery. I just tested it once, needs to be comfirmed.
How does the MG3 Hybrid perform on a long downhill stretch, with the battery at 100% charge? Some say it goes into neutral, has no "engine brake" and therefore you are forced to keep your foot on the brake, with all that that entails. This is not a safe way to tackle a long downhill stretch of road.

@philipchouliaras5879 you are totally clueless. My 1981 Alfetta ws built at Portello in Milan and my 2002 156 GTA was built at Pomigliano in Naples, while its engine was hsnd built in Modena. Neither have any components from China.
@caljeff2427 How are you defining smoking it? Yaris Ascent Sport hybrid is 32k DA in NSW - 8k more than Picanto GT Line. At $2 a litre that’s a difference of 4000 litres of fuel, or at the 5.5l/100 the picanto achieves, 72,000km. That’s how far you could drive it before you drove a single km in the yaris. After that, the yaris is going to save you 1.5l/100 over the picanto, or about $3 per 100km. Hybrids are not cost effective against convention ICE cars. Yet.
Looks a bit like the previous generation of the Yaris. Interesting how it has rear disc brakes when most if not all other cars in this segment only have drum brakes. Pity it doesn’t at least have a space saver tyre.
This has been moaned about since the release in Europe. MG Europe has said to be working on a split seat with the factory. They said hopefully later in the year. So maybe check in with your local MG dealer later in the year for updates.
3 speed transmission is because in low speed the car drives exclusively on battery, the engine will only kick in when it's over 40km/h but only to generate electricity for the electric motor. The gear will only be useful when the speed is 80 or over. Although I must agree that this 3 speed set up is flawed as when the battery is depleted the car will have problems with its power delivery due to the less than powerful engine and 3 speed transmission.
May I ask, why do you only test the lane keeping assist systems at 70? The highway speed of 100 or 110km/h would be better as that’s where you’d be using it wouldn’t you?
A huge step up from the previous generation and styling will hook in younger buyers, however people should consider the new Suzuki Swift hybrid for better reliability.
The front design is too complicated when it comes to cleaning. Noisy cabin at speed and that gear change leaves a lot to be desired. That said, for 30K not too bad for a general run around.
I was thinking this too, its the equivalent of an ICE car dropping a cylinder or 2 mid over take and leaving you in a very awkward and/or dangerous situation if you'll have enough road/time to finish the over taking, or pull back in behind the truck (if somebody else hasn't already filled the gap you just left).
Been driving it here for 5 weeks in the UK. If you hoon it about like a hot hatch you run into these issues as shown in the video. But in normal driving when you want to overtake something you have the full power as the battery doesn't deplete as between overtakes you are using low power so the battery charges. So if you want a cheap hot hatch replacement this is definitely not it. But if you drive it normally and need a bit of poke for an overtake before settling back to normal driving this does an ok job. It feels more reassuring than a Yaris hybrid when overtaking.
My opinion, if you are going to buy Chinese buy electric. The Ora Cat is not much more expensive than this and a much better car. I would struggle to recommend anyone buy a small $30k car which needs petrol with the Cat around. I know it is generally more expensive but small EV's are so much better than a tinny little hatch back.
Everything in Australia and Western countries are weirdly expensive, what do you expect? Despite Aussie having the most "insanely" cheap car price among all Western countries, it's really just average fair prices as I see it. 30k for a car like this in Australia you guys should feel blessed. If not for the Chinese shaking up the market for you, be prepared to pay double 😂
In my country, this will probably completely kill the MG4. Sales of the MG4 last November 466 and 622 in December. May 2024? 18! I believe the MG3 even with its flaws will now push those numbers to zero!

Ok so it's got a long warranty, AA and ACP and it's cheaper than a Vw Polo. But good grief, 3sp auto No split folding rear seat Seats don't fold flat No reach adjustment No adjustable boot floor I thought the Chinese flaunt copyright laws and would copy good ideas from something like a 2009 Polo but no, they haven't.
I’d rather pay a tiny bit extra for a base model Yaris Hybrid and here’s why: - Yaris CVT transmission is way smoother than the old 3 speed the MG3 uses. - Toyota known for reliability, can’t say the same for MG - Better hybrid system for less fuel consumption and also happily takes 91, not 95 - Strong resale value because it’s a Toyota. Don’t get me wrong - MG has improved significantly with the new MG3 however the price increase for the hybrid brings it close to its (much better) rivals. If this was $24,990 drive away it would sell like hotcakes.
It's funny another Australian UA-camr did a review on the hybrid MG3, and apparently, it has great economy around town. However, at highway speeds, it uses more fuel than the non hybrid MG3! Add to that, the hybrid needs 95 octane, then yeah, the Toyota system is still better. The UA-camr said the performance was great on flat ground, but around the hills, it was gutless. @philipchouliaras5879 well you're wrong there buddy. I'm 100% GenX. And my current cars are Italian, both 20 plus years old, not cheap Chinese rubbish that'll be in the scrapper in under 10 years. The ONLY reason folks buy MGs is because they are cheap. They'll sell a shed load, but they will still be crap.
@@johnphaceas7434 your car parts were also made in china LMAO. grow up
@philipchouliaras5879 you are totally clueless. My 1981 Alfetta ws built at Portello in Milan and my 2002 156 GTA was built at Pomigliano in Naples, while its engine was hsnd built in Modena. Neither have any components from China.
It's a city car. How does it go from home to the shops and work etc?
I'm driving a mg loan car atm, gearbox has a mind of its own! Let's down the whole car!
Does the petrol only MG have a 3 speed transmission as well?
CVT
Should phev but i think it would be more expensive, but this is already a killer for the price compared to other cars here in the Philippines
It was a cheap tishbox, now its an expensive tishbox. Also, am I missing something....?? 5L/100km is woeful for a hybrid car of that size.
I get that in our picanto which cost more than 6k less
@caljeff2427 How are you defining smoking it? Yaris Ascent Sport hybrid is 32k DA in NSW - 8k more than Picanto GT Line. At $2 a litre that’s a difference of 4000 litres of fuel, or at the 5.5l/100 the picanto achieves, 72,000km. That’s how far you could drive it before you drove a single km in the yaris. After that, the yaris is going to save you 1.5l/100 over the picanto, or about $3 per 100km. Hybrids are not cost effective against convention ICE cars. Yet.
@caljeff2427 I guess percentage-wise it's fairly significant, but in terms of value for money it just doesn't make sense.
Looks a bit like the previous generation of the Yaris. Interesting how it has rear disc brakes when most if not all other cars in this segment only have drum brakes. Pity it doesn’t at least have a space saver tyre.
why are MG's cars getting uglier? The old MG HS and MG3 looks so much better than the current versions...
and don't even get me started on the MG4...
@@Vorrimade it still sells ok though
That is quite the interior for that class. The exterior will need a little time to grow on people though.
I was thinking of buying one but NO 60/40 split back sear puts me off immediately and I will not be buying until they change this.
A huge step up from the previous generation and styling will hook in younger buyers, however people should consider the new Suzuki Swift hybrid for better reliability.
ok, but the price is a little bit different :|

who cars?
The front design is too complicated when it comes to cleaning. Noisy cabin at speed and that gear change leaves a lot to be desired. That said, for 30K not too bad for a general run around.
When you say the acceleration wasn't coming through, at 130kmph, I suspect that's the speed limit set for the car.
Sinewaves?
With all the negatives you mention here I’m glad I talked Mum into the Mazda 2 for around the same price.
The steering wheel looks like the same shape used in the Austin Allegro (never released in Australia).
This phev thing has been sold in Chinese market for many years in numerous model, pretty reliable though
Imagine how scary it is to pass trucks with this car. You never really know how much power you'll have
I was thinking this too, its the equivalent of an ICE car dropping a cylinder or 2 mid over take and leaving you in a very awkward and/or dangerous situation if you'll have enough road/time to finish the over taking, or pull back in behind the truck (if somebody else hasn't already filled the gap you just left).
MG should have made it a 3 speed manual column shift like the 68 Ford I learnt to drive on.
For that price I’d buy a Toyota.
The only question that needs answering is the reliability
Im not expecting to see any of these on the road tbh, unless its a rental.
You have to be mental to spend 30k on one of these
mental rental!
Some of the commenters here appear to fit into that category.
The price pushes it close to MG 4 territory, especially with government rebates for EVs.
In my country, this will probably completely kill the MG4. Sales of the MG4 last November 466 and 622 in December. May 2024? 18! I believe the MG3 even with its flaws will now push those numbers to zero!
Another great review. Everybody seems to be ignoring the Chinese factor though! Remember COVID...
U mean the virus that created in the lab that financially backed / released by the US?
Oh please... that's "thousands" years ago! Move on dear!
give us a break!
Well...
Love the older MG's , though i never owned one... Got great British classic car shows around my area yearly.
China owns MG now. They're under a tariffs regime now here in the US
At first i thought the mg was not so nice. But it grew on me Especially it that grey colour. I drive a 2007 Suzuki wagonr witch i bought new and it has just 32000miles on the counter. Next year i want a new car and this will be my choice. In this colour and stats and options. In the Netherlands where in from its total €26414,- included tax etc.
I’m sure there will be a bunch of these delivering Uber eats and didi taxi services. As long as it’s cheap to run they will sell plenty.
Looklike Mazda 2 having a baby with Toyota Vios
Ok so it's got a long warranty, AA and ACP and it's cheaper than a Vw Polo. But good grief,
3sp auto
No split folding rear seat
Seats don't fold flat
No reach adjustment
No adjustable boot floor
I thought the Chinese flaunt copyright laws and would copy good ideas from something like a 2009 Polo but no, they haven't.
I’d rather pay a tiny bit extra for a base model Yaris Hybrid and here’s why:
- Yaris CVT transmission is way smoother than the old 3 speed the MG3 uses.
- Toyota known for reliability, can’t say the same for MG
- Better hybrid system for less fuel consumption and also happily takes 91, not 95
- Strong resale value because it’s a Toyota.
Don’t get me wrong - MG has improved significantly with the new MG3 however the price increase for the hybrid brings it close to its (much better) rivals. If this was $24,990 drive away it would sell like hotcakes.
Yaris cvt has only 1speed😁
Looks pretty good for that price.
You should now review the new Suzuki Swift Hybrid, I think the Swift would be a good comparison
I still prefer a Toyota hybrid car any day
Check out the comparative performance specs & you'll change you mind
It's funny another Australian UA-camr did a review on the hybrid MG3, and apparently, it has great economy around town. However, at highway speeds, it uses more fuel than the non hybrid MG3! Add to that, the hybrid needs 95 octane, then yeah, the Toyota system is still better. The UA-camr said the performance was great on flat ground, but around the hills, it was gutless. (Productreview Cars)
One thing you can't review on this new car is reliability and build quality over time. I've heard negative things on MG's.
youve heard negative things for old MGs. The last 5 years MG ha effectively made brand new cars with brand new teams.
It is too soon to tell yet.
Anything that starts with MG, I’m bypassing. One of the worst hire cars I’ve ever driven.
Fasted car i ever drove was a hire car
interesting vehicle, but I'm thinking that the next generation will be a big step up and resolve many of the issues.
Normally, one year for the facelift to fix that crazy non split rear seat! And retune the engine so it runs on 91 octane! This does not have a turbo
Paul Cold??? I thought your surname was Maric.
lol 3 speed, and here I thought the 90s 4 speed in the previous model was already ancient enough, apparently not for MG 😂
It's essentially like 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. It doesn't need 1st and 2nd as the electric motor covers that bit.
In normal day to driving it's fine.
Toyota hybrid has only 1speed😁
