#mg #mg3 #review - Авто та транспорт
Opinions on the brand aside, a light hybrid with 155 kW for sub $30k is quite impressive. Time will tell if the reliability holds up though…
It can deploy 155kW of power for just over 1 minute. After that it is back to an anaemic 70kW!
@@RodneyW Yep another UA-camr took the hybrid on the hills out of Sydney and he was not impressed! On top of that the hybrid apparently uses more fuel on the highway than the non hybrid MG3 while using the more expensive 95 octane fuel!
@@RodneyWTrue, but save your licence.
This MG's pulg in hybrid has been sold in China market for many years, pretty reliable though
@@gregb1599its a city car, take a yaris do the same it would be struggling even climbing hills
That is front design is *FUGLY*
Forgetting that they are total s..tboxes (and still more expensive than they warrant) the only positive thing about the old one was that it looked ok. This has a face like a bucket full of smashed crabs.
On You-Tube there are always negative comments about Chinese cars. Yet in the showroom there are only sales.
Naturally, in a cost of living crisis, the cheap items will sell out first.
Nope, sales are dropping, especially for the EVs. Are you a bot?
@@JBrezicPhotographyEveryone likes BMW 😂 But it is unreal that everyone can buy one.

@bigglyguy8429 every article and stat I've seen has shown EV numbers growing year on year, month on month.
A really good review. The demonstration of the power delivery issues from the hybrid drivetrain was very clear. The old MG3 had one thing going for it. Price. The new MG3 is now as/more expensive than a Suzuki Swift or Mazda 2 and almost as expensive as a Yaris Hybrid. While it's much better than the old MG3, it is not as good as any of the Japanese competitors - or the Kia Picanto, which is now a lot cheaper.
Pretty arrogant by MG
Wow, Mazda and Toyota are really unexpensive in your country, a decent equipped yaris is near 25k€ in italy.... publicized for 22 but with interest, in reality, you will pay more than 25 and you really can't pay it cash, i haven't found a seller that won't insist to made you open a toyota finance service... the mg3 comfort in 21k still i think toyota is the best, but prices are really going insane for a car under 4mt that was under 20k just 2 years ago.
@@stefanomacchi1977 Maybe we get slightly cheaper cars, but house prices in Italy are much, much cheaper than in Sydney or Melbourne! (Italy is the one country in Europe that I'd like to go to live).
60k's in reverse. Not bad.
Can someone else tell my wife that 70mm is huge

I hope MG will come to the Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonia markets by 2025.
No.

Send me Estonian wife. I will send you a Chinese MG representative.
I am happy to see someone tested it in extreme conditions and showed how it performed in real life.
Unlike petrol engines, which can consistently deliver their peak power, in many electric cars, the peak power can be 2 or 3 times their normal power. However, this peak power only lasts for a few minutes before overheating. Manufacturers don't typically mention in ads whether the power is peak or constant and how long it lasts (5 seconds? 30 minutes? 2 hours?).
The 145 kW wouldn't last long since the battery is only 1.8 kWh. As for the generator, I'm not sure, but I think I saw somewhere that it's only 45 kW. We know that at speeds less than 60 km/h, only the electric motor pushes the car (the petrol engine only works as a generator and doesn't engage to wheels before 80 km/h). So generally, at low speeds, you have a maximum of 100 kW from the electric motor, and if the battery runs out, you only have around 45 kW max (limited by the generator).
However, I understand that this hybrid systems are not designed for the track where you can constantly use its 145 kW. It is useful for running on electric at low speeds to avoid the drawbacks of the petrol engine and gearbox and for running on petrol at high speeds to avoid the limitations of the battery. Some peak performance is available for a short time when needed (overtake).
Gday paul, when do you reckon we’ll get a dmax review from you?
Would love to see a comparison between this and other cars in its class like the Swift Hybrid. Especially on aspects such as city driving and highway driving comfort and engine revs at 100kmh. 👍
The styling is very early 2000s, reminds me of our old Honda city in some ways. Not a modern look I would have thought
So you buy a hybrid MG3 to save money on fuel, but then you have to use the more expensive 95RON? Wow, that makes heaps of sense.
it means you need RON95 for full performance, doesn't mean you can't go with the lower one, you just get less power though.
the RON95 is the cheapest fuel lmao??
Hi nice videos!!
At 7:35 there is a usb port for dashcam!!!

A class review 😊some others take Note 📝 .Many thanks.
It has 360 camera but rear seats don't even split! 😅
MG cars dont split....amongst other shortfalls....sadly
software and electronics is cheap nowdays. Building split seats requires actual work...
@@linustw I own the MG4 and MG ZS EV, both have split seats.
Oh boo hoo
ça va arriver.
how does it run out of battery? doesn't it get recharged by the petrol subsystem ? isn't that meant to be the main benefit of a hybrid?
Easy. It recharges the battery when you decelerate and uses charge when accelerating. Given that the electric motor appears to supply 50% of the total power output and the battery is small, if you spend too much time using the throttle heavily, it appears it can fully discharge the battery. In other words, it is depleting the charge quicker than it is recharging it. It will recover of course but for performance driving clearly you will run out of battery charge at times.
Must need the software update the UK ones got as the gearbox seemed way less clunky in their reviews
Paul just convinced me again...I'm keeping my 2010 Prius....😁
Since you have reviewed this why not the 2024 Hyundai Sonata. Its not an SUV either.
fuel economy is close to toyota corolla so impressive. cheaper as well as those go for over 30K now without the array of cameras as this car. servicing is cheaper on the toyota. both do not offer wireless carplay/android but kia strangely does. but probably paul is right, go for the petrol version. fuel won't stay at $2/l forever.
This phev thing has been sold in Chinese market for many years in numerous model, pretty reliable though

Looks a bit like the previous generation of the Yaris. Interesting how it has rear disc brakes when most if not all other cars in this segment only have drum brakes. Pity it doesn’t at least have a space saver tyre.
Looks like they styled on the older Peugeot 208 or 308 in the front and ta lights
Torsion bar or torsion beam rear suspension?
Sorry, meant to say that!
I'm driving a mg loan car atm, gearbox has a mind of its own! Let's down the whole car!
Is there a charge/save mode for the hybrid system?
No, the battery is too small. But I think that in sport mode, the petrol engine will keep running to charge the battery. I just tested it once, needs to be comfirmed.
Did you review the last mg3?
cant review something not even worth buying
Does the petrol only MG have a 3 speed transmission as well?
CVT
Why I love my Evoque, one button on the steering wheel to switch off all the safety rubbish
That is quite the interior for that class. The exterior will need a little time to grow on people though.
The front design is too complicated when it comes to cleaning. Noisy cabin at speed and that gear change leaves a lot to be desired. That said, for 30K not too bad for a general run around.

One thing you can't review on this new car is reliability and build quality over time. I've heard negative things on MG's.
youve heard negative things for old MGs. The last 5 years MG ha effectively made brand new cars with brand new teams.
It is too soon to tell yet.
A huge step up from the previous generation and styling will hook in younger buyers, however people should consider the new Suzuki Swift hybrid for better reliability.
30k for this little hybrid car has to be joke. Crazy how cars price went up so high now days. Back then in 2019, we could’ve got Jazz/Fit R/S for just 20k which had so much leg and head space. Maybe time for Australia to bring some Japanese Kei cars on road.
K -car is not safe for driving at a speed over 80km/h. The k-car is actually a PROBLEM of Japan, but they're struggling to work it out.
That was 5 years ago!!! Do you remember how much houses cost back then? Inflation!
Lol and that price was bottom of the barrel with zero tech
If it was 30k for a small hatchback, then its a joke. But 30k for a small hatchback hybrid is impressive for today's inflated market. While I agree that I miss the good ol' days of small and affordable cars. In reality, safety, regulations have gotten wayyy stricter in past 5 years making small cars just not feasible, K-cars specifically. (Also FYI, the Jazz is being replaced as the Brio in Southeast Asia, and you DO NOT want a car that's 10 years back in tech and safety).
@@acde9355 You won’t loose control on now days kei cars.
MG should have made it a 3 speed manual column shift like the 68 Ford I learnt to drive on.
Another great review. Everybody seems to be ignoring the Chinese factor though! Remember COVID...
U mean the virus that created in the lab that financially backed / released by the US?
Oh please... that's "thousands" years ago! Move on dear!
I’m sure there will be a bunch of these delivering Uber eats and didi taxi services. As long as it’s cheap to run they will sell plenty.
The only question that needs answering is the reliability
Well...
Love the older MG's , though i never owned one... Got great British classic car shows around my area yearly.
China owns MG now. They're under a tariffs regime now here in the US
The people who don't like it, won't buy it. Everyone else will buy one. Why wouldn't you? Compared to the cheapest Yaris this car is loaded.
yeah but I owned a near new yaris 1.5 in 2006, owned it for 5 years and hardly lifted the bonnet. It was bullet proof. I sold it to a neighbour's daughter, who since passed it on to one of her friends. It is now almost 20 years old and I still see it driving round the neighbourhood without any fuss - only apparent sign of age is some paint fade. I bet there won't be any series one/two MG3s running around Oz in 20 years time.
@@johnphaceas7434 Comparing 2006 Toyota with modern standards is the most boomer thing ever
@philipchouliaras5879 well you're wrong there buddy. I'm 100% GenX. And my current cars are Italian, both 20 plus years old, not cheap Chinese rubbish that'll be in the scrapper in under 10 years. interesting vehicle, but I'm thinking that the next generation will be a big step up and resolve many of the issues.
now we just wait 10 years for it
Normally, one year for the facelift to fix that crazy non split rear seat! And retune the engine so it runs on 91 octane! This does not have a turbo
Im not expecting to see any of these on the road tbh, unless its a rental.
You have to be mental to spend 30k on one of these
mental rental!
Some of the commenters here appear to fit into that category.
May I ask, why do you only test the lane keeping assist systems at 70? The highway speed of 100 or 110km/h would be better as that’s where you’d be using it wouldn’t you?
The price pushes it close to MG 4 territory, especially with government rebates for EVs.
In my country, this will probably completely kill the MG4. Sales of the MG4 last November 466 and 622 in December. May 2024? 18! I believe the MG3 even with its flaws will now push those numbers to zero!

The 70's live!
Most new EVs has 1 gear. So back to 1890s
You are hilarious. The 3-gear system and the ones from the 70s are worlds apart, using new technology. Just look at Toyota. Some cars are marked with 2 gears-does that mean you'll laugh at Australia's favorite, Toyota? If the badge were swapped to Toyota, would you then call it a perfect new technology? Let me tell you, Japanese cars are now lagging behind. You must have heard about the recent scandal where Japanese car manufacturers falsified the airbag deployment times, right?
Except it’s not. Most CVTs are classed as 1 or 2 gears because they can vary the transmission. This 3 speed is a Trimatic - a GM product from the 70s last seen in the VL Commodore. They probably used it because it’s cheap and due to SAIC working with GM

I was thinking of buying one but NO 60/40 split back sear puts me off immediately and I will not be buying until they change this.
This has been moaned about since the release in Europe. MG Europe has said to be working on a split seat with the factory. They said hopefully later in the year. So maybe check in with your local MG dealer later in the year for updates.
Another Australian UA-camr (Productreview cars) did a very thorough test on the hybrid including testing its performance on both flat and hilly conditions and he said it had good performance on the flat, but the hills it really struggled! The other major problem is that around town its very economical, but at highway speeds it actually uses more fuel than the non hybrid model! Add that the hybrid needs 95 octane and unlike some other hybrids that use a turbo, this is naturally aspirated with an Atkinson cycle, while the non hybrid uses 91! That is crazy!
Very good piece of info. On paper, the power train configuration looks weird.

With all the negatives you mention here I’m glad I talked Mum into the Mazda 2 for around the same price.
lol 3 speed, and here I thought the 90s 4 speed in the previous model was already ancient enough, apparently not for MG 😂
It's essentially like 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. It doesn't need 1st and 2nd as the electric motor covers that bit.

This car has a flat bottom steering wheel.....but no 'track mode' option 🤷
Lmao remember in 2019 where you could get a Cerato GT for a couple of grand more 😮
Imagine how scary it is to pass trucks with this car. You never really know how much power you'll have
I was thinking this too, its the equivalent of an ICE car dropping a cylinder or 2 mid over take and leaving you in a very awkward and/or dangerous situation if you'll have enough road/time to finish the over taking, or pull back in behind the truck (if somebody else hasn't already filled the gap you just left).
Been driving it here for 5 weeks in the UK. If you hoon it about like a hot hatch you run into these issues as shown in the video. But in normal driving when you want to overtake something you have the full power as the battery doesn't deplete as between overtakes you are using low power so the battery charges.
So if you want a cheap hot hatch replacement this is definitely not it. But if you drive it normally and need a bit of poke for an overtake before settling back to normal driving this does an ok job. It feels more reassuring than a Yaris hybrid when overtaking.
For that price I’d buy a Toyota.
I would buy one if they were $6000 cheaper.....and they would still be making a profit. We all know they are making these cars in China for under $10k.

I’d rather pay a tiny bit extra for a base model Yaris Hybrid and here’s why:
- Yaris CVT transmission is way smoother than the old 3 speed the MG3 uses. Iirc it’s the same 3L-30 Trimatic last used in the VL Commodore!
- Toyota known for reliability, can’t say the same for MG
- Better hybrid system for less fuel consumption and also happily takes 91, not 95
- Strong resale value because it’s a Toyota.
Don’t get me wrong - MG has improved significantly with the new MG3 however the price increase for the hybrid brings it close to its (much better) rivals. If this was $24,990 drive away it would sell like hotcakes.

It's funny another Australian UA-camr did a review on the hybrid MG3, and apparently, it has great economy around town. However, at highway speeds, it uses more fuel than the non hybrid MG3!
