I put my old tiller back together new seals, but they would not hold oil, Thing to do is fill the gearbox with axle grease, they will last forever, Also you can fill a leaking gearbox that will not hold oil on a hayrake or bush hog, Hard to believe but the grease keeps them working if you can not rebuild and keep oil in them Others have even filled old tractor manual steering boxes with grease Glad you have it running, I have done that job before, old tiller still running after all these years, built in early 70’s,
Did you ever find a replacement gear for this tiller worm drive? If you did, I would refill it with an NGLI 0 or 00 grease so that you don't have to worry about leaks as much again.
I have an old tiller just like it, put a new gear in it, new seals etc Then fill gearbox with grease and let her run, You might get by with John Deere corn head grease, if you are not familiar with this lubricant it is a far superior lube to reg gear oil, Plus it’s stays very thick and will not run out as fast, But cheap and dirty is just fill gearbox with axle grease and let her rip, if it will not hold regular gear oil,
Would love to know how you removed the shaft and gear. Did you just pound it out ? I noticed your sledge hammer on the side that's why I ask. I am doing the same with mine. I have removed the ring nut but I don't want to start hammering on the one side of the shaft to remove it if that's not what you are to do. would like to know, thank you
I think I have to split.the case on mine. Its stuck un gear with no intentions of doin anything but bein stuck. It's an old Montgomery ward (Briggs & Stratton) I believe.
Sorry. I wish I still had it to make another video. I've since learned a lot and gained a lot in making videos. I know it doesn't help in this case but it does for the future.

Did you ever find a gear for this project?.... I'm in need of the same gear...
I found a run down tiller and robbed the parts to make it work.... I found it at a shady tree mower shop...
gilsonsnowblowers dot com has new bronze gears. They sell Gilson tiller parts. The gear is by far the most expensive part to replace.
WHAT YEAR IS YOUR TILLER?
INEED PARTS MANUAL
Michael Ramer Still need that parts list? Mine is a Dayton Model 3Z471B and is almost identical.
Nothing like putting some gear oil in it every once in a while
This was how I got it. When I got it the gearbox was already beyond repair.
It was used too much when it was new.
I have parts for this one.
