As a Chinese, I remember absolutely laughing my ass off at Adrien’s mandarin, I literally had no clue what he was saying 😂
Hey,atleast Adrien is trying😅😅😅
@@user-bn9ki4nb2f A for effort definitely 🫡
I felt like I understood Marinette better lol
Rip the vas who had to try this
SAMEEEEE
Adrian's Mandarin is understandable in the French version though.
"My bad, this app is not mean, it's drunk"😂
shes so iconic
Lol
broo you stole my words😂😂😂
App is drunk. I will have to remember that one for work.
i think its impressive how you even understood adrien's chinese😂
most of the fandom don't get a single clue
I would've called a Chinese actor for him, but again, I can tell he tried really hard😅
P. S: I'm ur 69th like.
…l
@@ypsoo6188 But the are problems with your idea. Not trying to be mean, just saying. Where would the English dub studio find a Chinese voice actor that can mimic Bryce Pappinbrook's voice? And would the studio even have the budget for that? Or the time? Remember that the dubbing is done by different studios in other countries.
@@9Tailsfanit doesn't have to be exactly mimicked, since when you are speaking another language well then you typically don't sound as you usually do when you're speaking your own language. You can very clearly hear the American accent, that a fluent person, which adrien is supposed to be, wouldn't have. Even I don't sound like myself when I speak my second language and it's nowhere near as difficult as mandarin. People that speak more than one language know that they're not going to sound exactly the same when they're speaking a different language

As a chinese speaker, Adrien's chinese made me laugh my ass off because I couldn't make out what he's saying 😂😂

I just think its because of how often he skips his Chinese lessons👀
her second time speaking Chinese was even worse than the first time, how did she get a pass the second time 💀💀
Sadly,apps are sometimes like that💀
Lol like she said, it’s drunk 💀
Omg I was about to comment that😂💀
I liked that this cartoon had a main character of mixed race. It's not a main focus of the show, but it was refreshing to have my kids watch a show set in France but from a multicultural perspective.
Ladybug trying to learn mandarin is probably a bit of an exoloration of the multicultural/mums heritage theme, so maybe any shortcomings are intentional?
Edit: shortcomings in the chinese characters speech is less likely to be intentional I guess 😂 🤔 unless he's a bad guy and in the story he's faking being chinese!😂😂
As a Chinese born and raised in Canada, that sort of disconnect in language is fairly common among my peers of the same background. We'd use conversation Chinese around our elders or parents' generation, but among ourselves we'd speak in English. Presumably, even in a interracial household, it's similar--though in this case, Marinette's father is French and the dominant culture around her is French.
As a "fan" of the show, I'd say I'm uncomfortable with how it portrays and utilizes non-white characters. Particularly for the villains, where their akuma forms border on questionable stereotype-usage. All people are complicated, we're not one-dimension of anything.
@@not_a_day_job hmm. I hadn't considered stereotyping in the Akuma forms. That's an interesting thought, thanks. And the non white characters do seem a little stereoptyped and tokenistic in restrospect. Still, I'm probably quicker to forgive this show than many others since I always felt they were at least trying. but now I'm a little disappointed 😂 I expected more from it!
@@not_a_day_jobcould you provide some examples? At most I can only find issues with kung food.
@@charismaentertainer1657 Strictly speaking, I feel more comfortable gesturing to the Asian/East stereotypes as that is my cultural wheelhouse. Whether they work thematical or context matters, it's enough for me to squint.
- Qilin for Marinette's mom, the easiest way to describe the creature as "a Chinese unicorn" -- though it's mythology does not include wind powers (or a harkening of justice)
- Furious Fu, Fu becoming a kung fu master because he's...Asian? Monks are known for kung fu?
- Riposte for Kagami, with its silver samurai get up (though, this one I'm a little on the fence for, given the sheer popularity and homages to a variety of tokusatsu series)
@@not_a_day_jobI mean it’s Hawkmoth who created the villain
In this particular case, I'm curious how the French version of the scenes play out, relative to the English speakers, and whether any of the Chinese lines are translated differently.
I saw a comparison video of Adrian's Chinese on Bilibili from different dubs and I can definitely understand what he says in the French version, even though it still sounds weird.

That was so fun! I did find it odd that you seemed to skip a tiny part. You seemed surprised he answered in English. See, when the boy asks if it's his first time in Paris and the man said he's been to Paris 30 years ago, and he says your Chinese is good, you skipped ahead after that but right after that he says in English "your Chinese very good, not like my english." And the boy says "I thought you couldn't speak English" and the man says "my English very bad." So he can speak a little bit of English, but not much, so he was ok to tell the name of his dish. But yeah, great video.
Ohhhh I see, I just assumed he's gonna answer in Chinese then the boy translates it into English. I don't even know the word "celestial" (if I spelled it right) haha, I thought he's making celery soup.
@@ChinesewithJessie I know you probably checked already but yeah, that's exactly how you spell it, good instincts! Goes to show English spelling is pretty simple and consistent am I right 👀
@@cactustacticsgood joke! 😂
As someone who's been speaking English since birth I read wind (whined) as wind (wihnd) yesterday 🙃
@@synchrotune2833 a windy, windy path. Hey kinda like those garden path sentences, where you get to the end and it's all gotcha, you were reading it wrong the whole time!

I love Miraculous! I’ve always wondered about the accuracy of their Chinese. I also love your qipao. Where do you get yours?? Your outfits are so unique with the patterns!
Thank you! It's a vintage qipao by Vivienne Tam!
Hi! I'm parents are Chinese and both of them immigrated to Canada, so I am Canadian and both my English French and Chinese are fairly good! :D
Miraculous Chinese is so shit
Legit the Shanghai Special was an embarrassment
Should’ve found a better VA to pronounce Chinese for Lady Dragon, a goddamn CHINESE character
She’s stereotypically ugly and it’s just poor writing and lazy stereotypes.
“My bad, this app is not mean it’s just drunk” lolll 😂😂💀💀
“you’re either perfect or you fail” lmaoooo
As a Chinese person, when I heard Adrian talking in this clip, I am ashamed to say that I could not understand sh*t
If it makes you feel any better I'm not even chinese and i understood absolutely nothing when adrian was speaking🥰
I think it’s cause maybe he was speaking a different kind of Chinese? I’m not sure tho, that’s just what i assume
@@catscoolkidsgamingit's Mandarin he was speaking... Apparently???
no, his chinese was just awful
@@AdoboSoGuud well I read there are lots of dialects of it so maybe he was just speaking a different dialect? I do t really know though, I don’t speak it
Paris is indeed pronounced in a manner more similar to how you said it, when you hear it from French speakers. When you mentioned knowing what it's like to use a similar app to study English, all of a sudden, with your name being what it is, I was reminded of my cool housemate Jessica (she was Taiwanese) from 26 years ago, in London. She was using this small speaking dictionary that she carried everywhere and she kept repeating whatever it was saying in English... it was a struggle... Given the translation "mistakes" you mentioned, my guess is that they used automated translation to reduce the costs. Automated translation is never a good idea for film dialogues or literature. Human translators would have done a better job. Automated translation works best on technical content... Thank you for all the language tips!🙂
I don’t know if this is what you meant by this, but thats not George Orwell thats Andy Serkis😂
“this app is not mean it’s just drunk”💀
5:50 that's why I love writing in English lol. My first language is Polish and books in Polish are usually around ⅚ of the length of their English counterpart. My satisfaction with my short story suddenly being 200 words longer is immeasurable
For me it' actually the opposite. I'm Italian and my language comapred to English is a bit leghtier. Just the fact that the english speakers often contract thing like "I am" to "I'm" while we are stuck with "Io sono" does add up over time.
As a chinise who is very insecure about my accent I can confirm that I was flabbergasted when I heard Adrian's chinise 💀
Chinese documents are always briefer because syllables not letters. Basically a word in Chinese is usually just 2 characters or even just 1, whereas in English words are on avg. around 5-7 characters. I don't think the sentences when broken down are so much shorter as it is a matter of the characters.
Great video!
That was very interesting 😄
Maybe now react to Chinese in the Shanghai special. I am so curious if Fei and others did it well.
I would love to see you react to the Miraculous Shanghai special as well! There’s lots of Chinese in that one and they actually hired Chinese actors for the Chinese characters
There is a Korean show called Uncanny Counter in season 2 episode 1 the bad guys speak Chinese, the are Korean actors, pretty cool
its on Netflix
The mixup of Orwell and Serkis is fun! :D Just for a bit of more fun; Among his many accomplishments, Andy Serkis voice acted "Monkey" (Monkey King) in Enslaved: Journey to the west game (A futeristic adaptation of the chinese classic). He's an amazing voice actor.
I still dont understand why she put Andy serkis pic beside 1984 book cover?
@@boeta9778 She replied to another comment; she doesn't know either, but apparently Serkis is directing an upcoming movie of Animal Farm*, so google popped his photo up first in the google search.

"The app is drunk" XD thats good ! I have followed you for a looooooong time now, and just to pin point it - your english (esp. your accent) has improved alooooot \m/
I had to look it up since you got me curious, the Kindle version of the Japanese translation of Animal Farm says it has 253 pages, so you weren't far off! xD
I hope people don't get too discouraged with apps rating their speaking skills, it's a complex thing to assess and the algorithms usually aren't very reliable. And that's before you get into the huge range of accents out there! That's why a lot of them err on the side of "hey good job" even when you know you flubbed it
Adrien does mean Paris since that is where the show was made and takes place in, the show was originally in French.
Yeah finally some miraculous reaction ❤❤❤ Thank u Jessie
maybe watch the the “Shang hai special” (of miraculous) !! It’s a bit long but there’s more Chinese there :)
2:25 bro spoke in perfect gibberish
True 😂 I am Chinese I don't even know what he says
Sounds like the gibberish language you hear in The Sims
Honestly as a Chinese, marrinette actually pronounces it similar to the actual one unlike most people who have difficulty pronouncing it
Love your videos. You are totally awesome
What is Adrien saying 💀🤣🤣
I am early!! Btw love your Vids Jessie❤
Yay! Thank you!
Just wondering. When you showed the Orwell book cover you also included a picture of (possibly) Andy Serkis. Any reason?
I didn't know him haha, apparently he's directing a new film based on this book, and Google showed me this picture when I was looking for one😂
Given this episode was in the first season, they didn’t have the funds to hire a real Mandarine speaker, let alone felt it was very needed since it would only be used for one episode, so they cut costs by using an auto translator. Thankfully they made a lot more effort in the Shanghai movie.
Why do you know that? The serie maker say it later? I am happy that we have so many different German dialects in Federal Republic of Germany. 😊
Awesome reaction Jesse
Awesome video!!! Also I subbed :)
"Do you like me?"
"No."

0:16 the red brick buildings look like La Place des Vosges in Paris... and other buildings look like more traditional Haussmannian buildings although the Place des Vosges is an unclosed square so you wouldn't get that view. 🙂

No joke though I have been learning Japanese for 10 years and still I feel like the sentences can be painfully long. It's no wonder then, that often in informal settings Japanese people answer with a single word haha, they're over it!
I know learning Chinese since I was like 6 isn't the same as actually having it as your native language but for the life of me I could not understand any of Adrien's Chinese lol
And then the uncle is like "you're chinese is great!" And I'm sitting there like: mmm you sure about that?
Adrien canonically had years and years of personal Chinese tutors too 😂
If I decide I want to learn Chinese, I will definitely refer to these videos. I feel like I’ve already learned so much from just watching this video lol
I love these videos and I'm not even learning Chinese. I just like these kinds of videos in whatever language. I love native speakers reacting to popular media. I need this kind of educational reaction video in Spanish and German - languages I actually am learning!

It really is a romantic and beautiful city and remarkably affordable. I love Paris perhaps most of all cities on earth.
This was a great breakdown of the language but this being the American version of the Miraculous LadyBug episode (English) I'm curious, did the French voice actors of this episode do a better job speaking Chinese?🤔
I can understand what Adrian says in the French version, while I don't get what he says at all in the English dub. Dunno about Mari's Chinese in the French version because I haven't found a clip yet

I am trying to learn Cantonese myself, so it's fun looking at the Chinese written on the screen :)
Why is a headshot of Andy Serkis beside the cover picture of Animal Farm?
Omg ur so pretty!
Ur english is so fluent😢❤
6:04 Just search for how many pages Animal Farm Japanese Version has. It's 280 pages😂
Japanese is longer but it can express emotions very detailedly sometimes. That's why it is one of my favorite languages.
Love the outfit you are wearing.
I thought at 6:23 the blonde kid was saying "你將準備甚麼菜" instead of "常常" ^^" which translates to "What dish are you preparing?" which I think makes a bit more sense ^^" Since he is known to not differentiate zh ch sh I can see how it sounded like chang instead of zhang...
I have to agree with you on the part when you said one word does not have like 100 different tenses in Chinese. I don't know how much of that is true, but in English one word will definitely have at least 100 tenses.
her Chinese is so satisfying like when people speak fluent Chinese its SO satisfying in my opinion
My name’s Jessie too and I’m Chinese too

I'm fascinated with people who manage to fully make such sounds in a language, because when I try to do that I feel like I'm going to have a stroke
I can understand Chinese pretty well as I have learnt it for five years and lived in Taiwan, but I understood nothing when Adrian spoke
So does this mean Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda is just “Master Master”? XD
