    This was awesome. Could you do a video on how Spielberg used traps to ratchet up the tension? I feel like players end up disliking traps because they are placed inappropriately and don't add to the tension of the story.

    I often use the scene from 3rd movie with Sean and the Seagulls to explain to new players about using the environment, imaginative solutions , playing in character and instances that might earn someone inspiration or advantage rolls for the moment

    That's some of the better advice I've heard; making sure your players feel epic and look cool. I do love your idea of dragging a random NPC that isn't strong or much of anything, to heighten their feeling of being awesome. Good ideas, as always!

    Raiders is my go-to for how almost any TTRPG session should be run. Possibly one of the greatest adventure movies of all time (if not the best, imo) - and an incredible outline any GM can look to for adventure. Especially for single player games. Great video. A+

    I think the best known MacGuffin in western culture is the Holy Grail from the Arthurian Knights of the Round Table. In many ways these stories are the prototype for the D&D fetch quest. You must brave dangers to attain the Grail and in so doing you prove your worth as a knight. However I'm not sure if the Grail counts as a McGuffin or not in the Indian Jones franchise. For most of the film the specific attributes of the grail don't matter except that its existence drives conflict but later the Grail morphs into a plot coupon when it becomes the means of saving Sean Connery's life.

    • @ZipperonDisney
      @ZipperonDisney  4 роки тому +4

      Oh yeah, the Grail is probably the epitome of a McGuffin in lit. In some ways, I'd say the grail diary is the bigger McGuffin in the movie. Thanks for the insightful comment!

    Enjoyed the commentary. I've always viewed the opening scene in Raiders as a model template for a short/ single session adventure. As a DM, I tended to lean more toward using traps and tricks which rely on cleverness to circumnavigate, rather than a lot of combat which can become repetitive and "grindy".

    Wow great examination of the film and tying it to RPGs. I've modeled several campaigns over the years on this movie, but you articulated why it works so well. Now I understand why I keep coming back to the "Raiders" model of campaign over and over again. Thanks again!

      @@ZipperonDisney I have four players, each with their own over-arching goal. A nemesis, once a trusted NPC, has stolen their MacGuffin /coupon they were transporting. Now they're chasing the both. The MacGuffin is nebulous enough that it (will eventually) seem to lend itself to each players goal as well as the party's goal. Hoping to develop it so that the Nemesis can be turned and the players will experience some drama because they each want the MacGuffin for their own reasons.

    I know it might sound weird, but I have been wondering a bit about Outlaw Star and D&D. Hear me out for a bit. Outlaw Star has magic in its universe, one of the main protagonists even has a special firearm designed to shoot spells that have been stored in special firearm cartridges. But pretty much the entire main cast is actually more technical and physically oriented, of course, the smartest person among the cast is a literal child but that kid also happens to be incredibly practical and usually an often ignored voice of reason, most of the main cast are more combat-oriented. But the thing about Outlaw Star as a series, in my opinion, is just how much of sense of fun the adventure seems to have with moments of importance and seriousness punctuating personal moments for the characters, story beats that the person running the adventure really wants to drive home, or both. Since the series short, running only 26 episodes, we don't really get to see much with character development but we do get to see plenty of aspects that help you see the defined personalities of the characters, there's even some moments in the later episodes where we see unseen personality traits in several of the characters that seem to conflict with their prior personality traits but upon closer inspection are actually surprisingly complementary to their prior defined traits.
    So, just where does Outlaw Star, an anime from the late 1990s (the dubbed version first aired on Toonami in 1998), stand as a D&D campaign?

    • @ZipperonDisney
      @ZipperonDisney  4 роки тому

      no idea! Never seen the show. What do you think it would look like?

      @@ZipperonDisney A more science fiction flair to things, so not too far off from what you would find with Spelljammer or Starfinder. You can watch the entire series on Funimation's website now. Also, the opening song is pretty fun, in my opinion. The first 3 episodes set up a few different interlocking hooks for what would be the players, a mystery, treasure hunt, space pirates, and the like, the first episode also gives us a quick peek of what to expect when it comes to combat and grappler ships before jumping back in time to the before they even started the treasure hunt for the ship. There's also some more interesting, and possibly fun, space battle scenes with the Grappler ships, a type of spaceship only found in the Outlaw Star universe currently that are equipped with mechanized arms so they can manipulate their environment. One of the later episodes even gives a display of how the grappler arms can be used in a non-combat manner. For such a short series, only 26 episodes, it is jampacked with lore and ideas that really make the universe feel lived in and fun to witness. Almost all the episodes have a bit exposition before the start of show proper to fill in bits of info for the audience to make use of, such as the material that is used to make faster than light jumps and or tidbits about other lore related things. Honestly, you really should check out the series, it's a fun ride. Outlaw Star has bit of Fantasy and Western genre sprinkled into its science fiction setting. The main antagonists of the series use magic, in particular, they use Asiatic magic that usually requires the chanting of a specific phrase. But none of the main cast are magic users, even though the primary protagonist has a gun that literally shoots spells, one of the main cast has mystery surrounding her and seemingly magic-like abilities. So, it would be pretty easy to drop psionics into the setting wholly unique to magic.

    Great vid, 100% on making PCs badass rather than inept! Too often I see DMs have PCs fail at stuff they should be able to do with their eyes closed as the prime mover, but D&D is in part a power fantasy-game!

    With the definition of a MacGuffin, I'm not fond of Hitchcock's exact wording. I'd reword it as "An object that influences the plot primarily by being wanted, rather than by its properties directly". Unobtainium from Avatar is a good semi-example: its properties are shown, but they're never relevant. What is relevant is that the RDA wants it badly. Incidentally, the name "Unobtanium" is actually an engineering term from the 50's meaning "the hypothetical material that has the properties we need for our thing to work". In other words, it's a nod to its macguffin-y nature.
    Interestingly, money is actually a MacGuffin in real life: it has almost no useful properties, except for the fact that other people want it.
