Harland sold that house in 1965 I believe and he moved to Canada and strangely enough into my neighbourhood ( 33 km from Toronto ) and bought a small bungalow which is typical of the kind of houses in Mississauga in the 60's. He opened the first KFC in town and it was near my house and that's where I met him a few times in the late 70's when I was a little kid. He was already famous so I was surprised to see him in my local KFC , I didn't realize he moved to my town. He was a humble man and very nice. I saw him once without his famous outfit but you could tell it was him because he had that white hair and moustache/goatee. That KFC is still there. Last time I saw him was probably 1980, which is the year he died.
My fiance's mom was a KFC franchise owner in Calgary. Harlan loved to dance, and so did she!! You could take the train straight across Canada to almost all it's major cities: he was probably setting up the franchises in Canada and being b ased out of Toronto in the seventies would make a lot of sense.
I’m not so sure of that timeframe as the Colonel still lived there in the early 70’s when my family moved to Louisville in ‘73 and ate at the restaurant about then - I was 15. The meal was served “family style” meaning the food came out in bowls/platters and you passed them around. The Colonel visited the restaurant each evening and came to the tables to great everyone then left to go back to the house. We were able to get a picture of us kids with him. Very humble man.
The Colonel’s Lady restaurant behind the mansion has been a must visit location, everything served family style with lots of veggie choices and mock oysters made from eggplant.
Gorgeous home. Perfect for a Southern Gentleman. Thank you for showing it and the story behind the Kentucky Fried Chicken and Colonel Sanders. God bless.
Someone once told me they don’t eat at KFC because Colonel Sanders was a slave owner. I felt obliged to remind them that Colonel Sanders was alive during my own lifetime.
He moved to Canada and lived out his life here, as he still retained the KFC restaurants too. When Kentucky Fried Chicken changed to KFC, the quality and food items it was know for went out the window in my opinion. They closed one here, and most people I know don't eat it as its basically just crap now...used to be local chicken...now its all factory farm, barely developed chicken....ughhh. His house in Ontario, was a nice little comfortable bungalow!
@@jimwiskus8862 yes, lots of posts about the number of pressure cookers and making the gravy from the "fixins" and other infor. from people who had KFC as their first job
I moved to Shelby county in 2007. The house and Claudia Sanders Dinnerhouse are about 3 miles away. The house is beautiful but not open to the public. We enjoy eating in the restaurant, much better than the fast food chain.
Very cool to see a historic home from my County being featured on this channel! I love to hear the stories and see the beautiful homes, although in all honesty, this house is in disrepair and hardly worthy of being on this channel aside from its famous owner. Claudia Sanders Dinner house (built for his wife) languishes on, it’s not much to write about. Consider featuring the old stone inn and its history, pretty story there.
Back in the day Kentucky Fried Chicken was good, real gravy not powdered brown school glue, and the chicken wasn't dripping with grease. Just different times when people took pride in everything they did.
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) was so much better when Colonel Sanders ran the company, as a kid we started going to KFC around 1961. The Colonel's home, for me, is perfect--- warm, cozy, nice floor plan, the perfect large family home. It just needs an inground pool......
I think I might be the only person in the country to say this but, I have never had KFC. On the same note, I have only had McDonald`s once. I don`t eat fast food. I do like the Colonel`s house though.
I remember the first time we had Kentucky Fried Chicken, only because my sister said it was better than mom's. Big mistake. Ha, ha. I do like the house. Sorry, but his image was much better than his behind the scenes personality. Good report, Ken.
"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken." -Col. Sanders I'm gonna go on & say it. All true Kentuckians know his nephew's "Famous Recipe" at Lee's is better than KFC's "Original Recipe" You have to find the right Lee's restaurant though, where they're ran right.😂 I recommend the Lee's in Harrodsburg, KY if you're ever there but I'll settle for the one across the street from me in Lexington on Richmond Rd. My central Kentucky family used to meet my Louisville family in Shelbyville at Col. Sanders's wife's restaurant Claudia's (behind Col. Sanders's house @ 4:33 ) It's a bit fancier than KFC or Lee's though.
Love the charm of his Victorian mansion. KFC is great in the states, but it’s huge throughout the world! You made me want to get a bucket of KFC sometime this week😋
In 1989 I went to culinary school and what they did is they took the old KFC test kitchens and turned it into a cooking school and it was great and it’s just up the hill. You could see Colonel Sanders in this house but unfortunately now is corporate officesin Louisville, you can find a KFC on every single corner Miss the colonel he was a good guy
I grew up about 1/4 from that house on US 60. He only lived there a short time. About 1965 after opening the Colonel's Lady that home was used as an office and they bought a modern ranch-style house next door and a home in Canada. About 1973 or 74, they built a new house off Burks Branch Road. He used to drive around town in a powder-blue Fleetwood with his picture from the KFC bucket on the door.
The man describing this video said his kfc was on hwy 25 E but that’s not true you would have to turn and go west and a little ways down the road it is in the right., and another thing he had a house right beside it too
I certainly differ from others people opinion on KFC, I feel that KFC is detrimental for long time good health, it is a fast food, deep fried, not freshly made and too dry for my taste, compared to freshly cooked Indian chicken which is garnished with coriander and lemon juice, to eat dry KFC without condiments was anathema.

Thank you for finally featuring American Royalty. Great channel!

A truly superb episode, Ken. Amazingly informative.
As a Kentuckian, I approve this message.

😂
I remember him appearing in the Kentucky Fried Chicken commercials. He looked great for a guy who was born before the Civil War. lol
A courtroom brawl? Colonel Sanders literally kicked someone’s ass in a courtroom? I like this guy more than ever now!!! 🤣 Awesome video!
Japan loves KFC, and due to great marketing ploy, eating KFC on Christmas has become a tradition there.

Was the original recipe prepared in a pressure cooker? If so, I don’t know if it’s still that way today? Personally I would think not.
@@jimwiskus8862Yes. It is. Because it’s quicker and remains juicier. But the recipe is different.

I live near his house on Melton Drive in Mississauga, Ontario. It’s a modest bungalow in a beautiful neighbourhood.

I now live in the next county over. I have been meaning to make a trip to the Dinnerhouse in Shelbyville. Hope to do so soon.
It’s fair at best… altho we do appreciate his legacy
May God keep blessed you always and be happy ✨️ ❤️ 🙏 🙌 😇 😊 always

Unfortunately, I've never seen his home; his grave - yes, but not his home. Excellent video.
You aren’t missing much, I assure you.

KFC....A heart surgeon's job security
That's why we only go there about 6 times a year.....
I'm surprised he didn't have a steam train on his property. He loved the railroad.
Didn't have that Disney money
You can go to his cottage on little Lake in Peterborough ont it's a art gallery now
Best wishes for the new year. As always an interesting video.

sponge paint walls? very interesting And pressure cooked chicken I like the sound of that
Harland Sanders definitely had a interesting life beyond just pressure cooking chicken.
KFC was finger lickin good in the 1970's, it's barely edible now. His famous original recipe is available online, try it.
very nicely done.
Is it me, or the oldest version of this house had more windows?
2;47 is that an original Hudson's Bay blanket parka??? I've never seen one but the colour pattern (I believe) is copyrighted in Canada.
Interesting. 🐓
Cool.
All I can say is, oh my.
Floor or "flooring"?
That’s what Lees Famous recipe most of the new building are designed after his home, his nephew started it it’s the closed thing to KFC orignal recipe
en France nous adorons KFC
KFC now is as dead as Sanders. The food sucks
Why is it so costly lately?
Yummmmmmm

so another company has taken over. many locations are closing, I can't afford to eat there. same with pizza hut.
Don't care for the house.
sorry but it is Sunday and I am not supposed lie, this is the ugliest house so far...😁
Kentucky Fried Chicken is my favorite chicken.
xxl grilled stuffed burrito 😢 Those were the best from KFC Taco Bell.
Sucks what Pepsi did to the brand. The food sucks ! Pizza Hut too. Was good pizza back in the day. Now it’s garbage for the masses.
Why is that someone gets rich they always buy a big ass house.
