this was recommended to me maybe because i watch a ton of CD related videos. watched it and man, i thought this was from a "big" audio channel, the quality is top notch, keep it up!
Very kind to say, thanks! There's indeed a lot of work to do these, so Technostalgism will surely alternate between device presentations and more elaborate, historically contextualised videos such as this one. Having said that, I really enjoy creating these so will try making as many as time allows.
@@technostalgism yeah I'd probably get either this model or the d33 for everyday use. But for something for say a weekend not the everyday CD player would be the d88 it be a good one for when friends come over and they can see it in action or for fun I'll take it to Starbucks and play a CD with nice art work on the disc and I'll make sure to bring a backpack and play a CD just for the fun and curiouosity if it'll catch people's attention since it's a unique player the way it spins the disc. But yeah for everyday use it's not a good idea it's not meant to be the everyday player
The unit has DRAM onboard in the form of a IC MSM51X17400D, reference IC602 in the service manual. It looks like a common 4 MegaByte IC for buffering, as I encountered it too in MiniDisc devices. It might be present in other DiscMan units.
@@technostalgism Just checked, the IC is also present in the Sony D-EJ825-EJ925-E888-E999, per the Service Manual with the same IC602 reference. For MiniDisc devices, it might have to do with the ATRAC decoding, as those files cannot be played back directly. MZ-R37 for instance has 2 variants in terms of cache size, MN41X17400CTT (US, 16MB) or MN41X4400TT-10TIL (EXCEPT US, 4MB), also referenced IC602.
That's very high praise, thank you! ♥ This will always be a unique device and if you find a working one it should last. The display on the remote will likely be the thing that starts fading, as is the case with mine too. As always, patience is key in finding a good price. Sometimes it takes a week, other times years...
I still have my D-EJ01 and still use it occasionally. I bought it new on 9/7/2001 for $390. I still have the box and receipt for it too! Even now it feels like a high quality CD player, you're right about the feel. The external battery case that extended your battery life was just the coolest thing to me back in the day and it's made of magnesium too. Sadly the gumstick batteries no longer charge or work and I can't find them anymore, so now I have to use the AC adapter.
This is indeed still one of the coolest devices ever... there's no other portable cd like it ever made afterwards... quite unique and still so modern. You're lucky to have one, enjoy it 🎉
I bought one of these in Hong Kong way back when. I forget why but I sold it on eBay. I remember it being slightly too thick and the sound quality was average. The ultimate discman remains D-E905 in my opinion.
Sound quality isn't great via the headphone out, line-out is much better. But indeed, it's call to glory is the slide-in mech and the things Sony introduced at the time. The D-E905 is really nice, but my favourite will always remain the D-J5 / J50. ❤
Wish I could maintain more social media profiles, but IG, YT & TT are already enough work. As we grow and with help of patreon support we're going to look forward to a more diversified presence.
In fairness, it wasn't, but back then companies weren't afraid to experiment and do a one-off just for the heck of it. And frankly, I miss this crazy attitude.
I still have this baby in my hands! Even the tube that hold 2 betteries for extra power
That's so cool, a gem of a device, hope you enjoy using it!
Your video production quality is amazing!
Thank you so much! Hope the channel gets more subscribers to justify making them :)
@@technostalgism Your subscribers to videos ratio is very good already.

agree, same here
This along with the Sony D88 and the d33 are just some of my dream portable CD players i hope to own and find someday
This one's more practical for everyday use though ❤️

Gorgeous looking discman
It's so kind of you making such videos for us CD walkman lovers... Since not any videos available of things like these.thank you man.👍
Hope to pick up the pace as the YT channel grows. Thanks for subscribing! ❤

That's great info! Is this in the service manual? Would love to know exactly what I can reference to mention it in part 2. Thanks :)
@@technostalgism Yes, in the service manual. Look for IC602 in the diagram, and D-RAM wording.

@@EmielRoumen Thanks for this!
I better find one of these before your channel blows up and the prices with it!

Amazingly the price on these has basically stayed at approximately MSRP since they came out. $400-500 is what I usually see them go for.
Great start! Good luck with your channel!
Thank you so much!
i enjoyed this, please make more CD related videos! 💿
Really glad you did, was a joy (and a pain hahaha) making it. More to come for sure, there's a part 2 to this one coming as well!
I used to have this. Bought it from a friend while in high school in the 90s
So cool ❤❤
1:17 OMG! She inserts the disc upside down! 😂
That's because Massive Attack have stamped the music on the wrong side 😜
@@technostalgism😂
we need more videos like this
Thanks mate! Will do, time-permitting more will come this year. ❤️

I recently bought one at a swap meet for cheap without a remote.
Great find! Is it working? ❤
I'd like to buy Sony D-EJ01

that was a very high price for a discman.
It was... A luxury unique item after all... From Sony
I had that baby!
Nice 🎉❤
Лазерная техника была сложной,но цифровой лазерный звук,в разы лучше того звука,который сейчас с флэшек играет.
What are the differences between the D-EJ01 and the D-E01?
Different regions
No actual difference in the cd player
I wonder how come it doesn't scratch the CD
There's a rubber "lip" around the opening protecting the discs.
Can it play a 900MB 100 min CD-R
That's a great Question. Will see if I get one and test for part 2.
@@technostalgismHey was you able to try one 900MB CD, if not give me your address or email and i will send you one, Thnx.

@@technostalgism me too. i hate current cars..all the same
@@endrizo Oh yeah, try finding your car in a garage... if it's not either very very expensive (not guaranteed) or "a classic" :)
@@technostalgismwhat makes you say it wasn’t?
I guess only the top cover is made of magnesium.
No. It's the whole body. There's no "top" body per se.
@@technostalgism On my Sony D-EJ925, only the top cover is made of magnesium, rest is plastic.
@@dorfschmidt4833 right. And this video is about a different model :)
@@technostalgism Then Sony probably didn't skimp this time and had the lower part made of magnesium as well.
