In this video I discuss the history of portable music, starting with the Walkman and the evolution of the Discman into its inevitable demise with the rise of MP3. how come this has less a hundred views when it's so well made????
Thank you!
Everybody is watching Taylor Swift vids. Billions of views
With the inclusion of the chart and the image of all the discmans along with the overall dialog, this is an awesome video. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I love the car discman detail of having the screen and controls backlit so you can safely use it when on the dashboard and driving at night.
Just one small critique, get the points to turn molten, rather than just adding a little solder on the top, as you can get a cold joint between the 2 solder layers, where is if you heat the entire pad it will form a single solder joint that is more durable and better conducting.
Good video!!
Guaranteed it says “Made in Japan” at the back. That’s the reason it still works to this day.
All my oldest Sony products that are Made in Japan still work like the day I purchased them. Great video.
I made sure I looked for that on the back when buying a Panasonic cd player off ebay today.
wow love this video give me TECHMOAN vibes keep up the good work!
Thank you - that’s high praise!
My first Sony Discman was the D220 it have a great Design, and a display with backlight.
Great video, thank you. I have been having a lot of trouble finding where to dive into this topic.
I drew this picture of a Sony phone I imagined called the “call-man”. It looks like a regular Sony Ericsson, but has no screen. I drew a T9 keypad, two call and end keys, and a speaker. It has a pair of earbuds that had a tiny screen on a control module, like the later Discmans.
Excellent video! I still have a functional D-5 "Compact" player, as well as a couple of other discman players from Sony and other brands. Though functional, some need some cleaning or adjustments.
Great work on making this video. Congrats and long live CD!
Wow, I like this channel ❤️ Subscribed 🙂
I still have the D-5 I used to carry to work back in 1984. Who knew it would be collectible one day?
You carried it to work in 1984? Did it skip a lot? Wow, back in 84 most people still only had cassette players, you must have seemed like someone from the future to your colleagues back then!
@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb I was definitely an early adopter. I was like a CD evangelist in that office! :)
@RadCenter I bet yes! Definitely an early adopter. I didn't hear a CD player until 1988 and my dad got one in late 1988. He only had one CD for ages.
Was it expensive the Sony CD player you had back then?
@@AlexMitchell-sj4sb cassettes are garbage
@@Sammy-34079 are they? Alright, thanks.
I have the d-802k discman from 1993. Still works great
I just bought the Sony sport walkman DSJ 15
discman
Hi there, so it looks like the solder used was not the same as the original, (should be 60/40) and you've made some cold solder joints, which will break down eventually, and the yellow stuff is just flux left over from manufacture, so nothing to worry about in that regard. Some walkman's can get up to and exceed the 20-20k mark, but they are the more expensive end usually (DD range ect). (I'm an Ex-Sony tech by the way) Nice vid.
Always loved the orange backlight on my D-180K car discman but some of the control buttons lost sensitivity and I never felt the anti-Skip feature did much of anything in the car as it was super sensitive to bumps.
7 views? what??? i thought i was watching a 10k+ channel - great video.
Thanks! I’m trying to grow the channel so I’m creating the best content I can.
Yes felt same way, amazing content
Sony was the king of the CD players.
Sony wins on the physical music media
I love the ear pun
Pink Floyd - PULSE CD. Good! 👍
I love cds and thats a cool Discman
I still have my Sony discman k844
I have been a fan of Modern Marvels and you have covered it so well.
Keep it up buddy!
Subbed
Thank you!
The mega bass add a boost for great quality.
The first car Discman was the D-600 released in 1987. Like the D-5 it has only the basic controls and does not take batteries internally. I own this model with its original car mount.
9:55 the residue is the coating on the board I think, the board is coated with some sort of protection finish.
Nice video !
Thank you!
Either that or just flux but yeah, harmless if they didn't remove it at the factory haha
What I learned: the long screw goes in the hole with the orange dot.
😎👍✨
9:01 It doesn't look like you applied enough heat to the joint for a reliable connection. Your tip is for smaller connections, so you could at least use it sideways to apply heat evenly to the whole area of the solder or you are risking a cold solder joint again. You need to make sure that all the components are heated up, not just the solder.
7:08 There is model D-822, but I don't see the specific D-822K model that I have (can't find any D822, so is it just a typo?). It's a Car Discman that is not included in the picture (yes, there are just 24 models shown there).
hey thats my buddies photo hahaha
Got a D180k today and it's like new! But it only has a car battery charger. Now, to make it light up without plugging it into the car, you just need a simple 9-volt wall charger and that's it? What size should the pin be? I am from Argentina and here it is 220 on the wall. Would I need a 110/220 transformer? I want to use it in a home audio system. Excellent video by the way!
You shouldn't have to find the brand specific charger, just get a 220V to 9V PSU with the correct plug, the correct polarity which is VERY important, and enough amperage to power it, and you should be good to go. Barrel plugs of that voltage use tend to be 6.4mm, and the amperage requirement on the unit isn't the exact amount you need, just basically the minimum amount. So if it says 500mA, make sure the PSU is 500mA or more, but not less.

In November of 1989, Sony acquired Columbia from Coca-Cola & it became Sony Pictures in 1991.
Quality of Sony-devices in the 80s and 90s. No comparison to the quality of devices of the present time, whether it is Sony or other producers.
Weird, I have a Discman not on the list that was made in 1997
Do you need a power adapter for the car discman?
This car Discman has the option for both, so i can choose battery or power adapter.
What was offered for the discman to Carry it around like you would with a walkman
I don’t think anything was offered as a carrying case.
That yellow stuff is probably flux that never got cleaned off
Now days indeed I use onkyo player..free. on my s22 phone..wav files..but I still have discman..a late model. Onkyo app sounds really good. Im too poor to subscribe to streaming...
