Here is a quick comparison between Sony's original SEL-18200mm and the new power zoom (SELP-18200) e-mount lens. Enjoy!

why you didn't compare the image quality ? this kind of 'physical' review is already understood by everybody
Hi, Thanks for the thoughtful review. Has Sony updated the SELP-18200 for the hybrid autofocus, the contrast phase detection? Your post was May/2013. Time for me to pick up a lens, the SEL18200 or the SELP18200 and the focus is a big deal. :-) Thanks again, Joseph
I have the silver one, the OSS works very great on my Sony A6000.. it is a great glass!
Do you know if the lens hood from SEL18200 (ALC-SH109) is compatible with SELP18200 lens? The original lens hood from SELP (ALC-SH125) is too big. The filter diameter are the same (67mm) on both lenses.
Gracias :)
Hey, I have the the Sony Nex VG30 complete with the SELP18200 Power Zoom Lens. I want to expand my camera rig by buying a shoulder rig with a follow focus device. However, the bottom of the lens houses the Manual/Servo controls so a gear ring can't be put around it. Is there any way around this? Or should I trade this lens for the SEL18200 without the powerzoom?
-Thanks
You seem unaware the SEL-18200 is a really popular choice for the larger NEX-FS100 camcorder, which is what I am interested in the power lens for. Good insights though, thanks.
per piacere in italiano Grazie
Video is helpful. There seems to be a lack of info out there on this. I would like to know more about image quality, also. You state that the LE is not as good, but I didn't get why. If you could add more detail on that, it would be helpful. Thanks!
Hello, please Tell me this lens SEL-18200 ideal for video camera - Sony NEXVG30EH ???
rediscover this lens I wonder is this power zoom has better image quality? Thank u
,,,,,,,,,thanks for the informative observation. Ill went for the older model.Tried them both could not see the difference, except for the obvious power zoom. Further, my older model did not slip.
I Love Sony's Mirrorless cameras but the battery life is terrible on all the models including the A6000 which i own, and to make a 18-200mm with 'Power Zoom' is one MORE thing thats gonna drain the battery! :( not a great idea! I wish Mirrorless cameras would step up the game with battery life!, My Nikon D7100 can go for days without a charge
Jayden Styles my advice, get aftermarket. the original battery when nex was launch is 1000mah. aftermarket have it in 5000mah, decrypted info-lithium. around 60-80 bucks.
but on 4-5 days trip, you still need a couple of those. nex is fully digital, no mirror whatsoever. so it drains battery like it burns gasoline.
Thanks for the honest and informative feedback :D yes i have purchased a couple of aftermarket batteries for my A6000, I guess everything about a mirrorless eats battery like crazy even tho it has a view finder, Its hard not to use it like a point & shoot by using the LCD screen, but with my DSLR its viewfinder all the way, cause using live view on a DSLR for normal photography is terrribly slow :D
Amin Ismail I have been looking for this 5000mah battery, where can I find it? Thanks in advance!
I have the SELP18200 on my Sony A6300 and it's great :)
Does the Auto focus work as it should on the 6300?
What apen whith the shadow for the flash . Jajajajaja my english.
HI, I have the a6000 with the 55210 lens along with the 18-50mm. As a reference, I am an amateur photographer looking for convenience and casual shooting. I am seriously looking at the SEL 18200 and the SEL 18200LE. I noticed that there is also a Hasselblad LF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens that I have been told is identical to the SEL18200, but is on sale for $599. Do you agree that it is identical and at the price, is a much better deal than the 18200LE? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Love the video and looking for all the pros/cons before taking the plunge. Besides convenience of 18-200 on one lens, what else am I gaining?
+David Miller Mate, if I were you, I would not switch to 18200. 55210 is good enough. It is smaller and lighter, which means more convenient as you prefer. Plus, the image quality doesn't improve, don't waste money on that.
+Wenchuan Wu Thanks for validating what I wound up doing :). I had bought it at B&H and quickly returned it. I am sticking with what I have. Now on the hunt for a decent deal on a Prime lens to play around with. Any suggestions? 35mm, 50mm, other?
David Miller Well, it really depends on which focal length you will shot the most. If you have no idea yet, just play around your 1850 for a while and see which length you use more and enjoy more. As to choice, Sony 24/35/50 mm are good. If you have a limit budget, sigma 19/30/60 mm are also great bargains. Anyway, pic quality by a prime lens is way better, your investment on this would not let you down :).
David Miller I would strongly recommend the sigma 16mm one of the sharpest lens.
Can. Someone show the quality when used with the a6000
@TheDigitalDigest I'm looking to acquire a telephoto lens for my Sony NEX-7. I mainly do photos but on ocassion I find myself doing minor video work. Does the SELP-18200 allow manual focus? Would you recommend SELP-18200 for photography? If not, which lens should I buy? Thanks!
These are two ancient camera bodies. Time for an a6000!
I tried to compare the Sony A99 to other Nikon and canon cameras, they seem comparable and where one lacks the other excels. I would like to have the option to record high quality video as well and sony has equiped the A99 with very nice accesories. Awesome Videos again. would really like to see a video comparing nex7 and a99
@TheDigitalDigest all your videos are great really helped me to choose what camera to buy, i have the NEX5n. As my skill increases I'm thinking of upgrading since i have been taking photo for people and assisting in weddings and candid photoshoots.
My question is compared to a NEX7 is it a significant advantage to get a large DSLR (Sony A99) i have a few lenses already but i can sell all of it or keep as a back up. If there is a better option. Since the NEX5n i am a little adicted to Sony.
will you review the new Sigma Emount lens series? 19mm,m 30mm, 60mm?
I found the LE version of the 18-200. Thanks.
Yes, I'd like to see those Sigma Emounts reviewed too.
Thanks for your review. Are you going to (or have you already) reviewed the slim version of the 18-200? I'm so confused by the lens options that I'm fearful of buying anything because I might turn around and find I got the wrong one! These things are pricy enough that a mistake would hurt (and I hate to have to return stuff). I'm not use what the part number is for the LE slim version you mention.
The power zoom version seems really chunkly when put in a flat surface...
What about the image quality? Is there any difference in sharpness between the two lenses??
no
too big
It's a 'pumper' so it's no good for cine/video shooting.
+Eric Young I suppose it depends on the design where the air passes in and out of the mechanism as it is displaced by the movement of the front elements. Perhaps if there's some sort of felt that traps dust as the lens moves toward telephoto. I have a Nikon 18-200 that does this and it's not a major issue. But getting back to the original point, it's a problem for cine folks with matteboxes, since the length of the lens changes.
Right, and the SEL was intended as a video.
Sony
a little bit off topic but i'm considering on purchasing either the SEL18-200 or the SEL 55-210. what would you recommend for me to purchase if still image quality/sharpness is my main priority? thanks in advance
Mr. Ortiz used both. both is about the same in sharpness. its sharp but not "holy schit" kind of sharp. i really think there's no difference, so i keep the 18-200 and sell the 55-210.
