Fender Super Sonic 22 Noisy Reverb fix - Part 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 бер 2020
- This video shows the additional work I did to the reverb tank and I finally replace a noisy, Microphonic 12AX7 in V4 position with a smooth sounding German (Telefunken) ECC81. The result is dramatic.
I close off with a few chords thru the amp with my Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster.
Unbelievable what buyers have to do these days to make Fender-Amps usable in the studio! Why doesn't companies build their stuff better? I know: fast, cheap building is all that matters ... Thanx for the video!
Hi Derek, Dude, THANK YOU! I just did these two things and my amp is transformed! I can use as much reverb as I like and it's not noisy, even with tons of gain. The noisy channel switching has gone too! Now I really love this amp! Thanks again. I owe you a beer!
I forgot to mention that the channel switching pop was sorted too. I was thinking I'd have to go searching for the cause in a later video. Guess I got lucky. 😃👍
Absolutely great videos
Thanks for that Derek.. Surprising how simple things make a big difference to noise issues and general performance. The Super Sonic range are a good design and I've met a lot of 'pro's' using them.
Agreed. Here's a classic example of good design being thwarted by bean counters. That ribbon cable is the Achilles heel of most modern amps! Cheap and nasty!
@@DerekHerbst747 Ha-ha.. Yes 'accountants' have a lot to answer for. That business model is flawed . Look at the growing number of 'boutique' amps that are sold every year and it tells you that people who take their talent seriously are willing to pay the costs of reliable and great sounding equipment. Fender have their sound right and for a few more bucks they'd have their reliability and components right. Your videos are a valuable resource for those already on the Fender hamster wheel .
Beware of magnets!
Stay at home. Magnets are dangerous!
Good one Derek. Somewhere in madeira is one of these with an unnecessary capacitor adding to unneeded Miller effect :) I may have to issue a product recall.
Incredible thank you! I really enjoy working on my own gear and just got a gorgeous Limited Edition Super Sonic used, but need to troubleshoot the reverb. Figured I’d follow your lead and do a complete noise reduction while I’m at it. I got one Tele that loves to hum!
Swab those reverb tank tubes across -> 12AX7 to drive the tank and 12AT7 to return of the signal. Works like a charm! I think engineers at Fender got it all wrong when choosing the tubes 😉
What was you're A/B comparison of the reverb cardboard conclusion, did the shielding tape help and did you switch the cables, I have the head unit and wonder if reversing the tank position will help, thanks for a great video! The shielding tape and ground lug is genius.
There was no real difference after adding the additional shielding layer to the cardboard. The biggest difference came from shielding the leads between the board and the reverb tubes
Great video, thank you!
Did you ever have a problem with the Ss 22 where the sound cuts out as far as the guitar but, the amp hums like the volume is all the way up as if you have a cord plugged in and you’re touching the tip with your finger?
Did you ever have a problem with the ss22 where the guitar cuts out and the amp hums like it’s full volume with just a cord plugged in and you have your finger on the cord tip? Sometimes turning the amp off or switch the standby on then off again, it will get back to normal but sometimes it just stays unusable
I have never seen that before. Sounds like a dud tube. Or a bad ground point in the amp.
I have the same amp...and I'm planning to change that noisy tube as well...frankly, I can't figure out the position of V4, I'd appreciate it if you could show me...or maybe provide instructions. Thanks!!!
There is a clear diagram inside the amp, in one side!
Great.. I’m looking into getting this amp. Amazing.. but the hiss gets me.. looking on a 2nd hand unit.
It's a great amp troubled by a problem that is easy to fix. Check out my newest video for an update.
My fix would be shielding paint rather than foil at least for that. Those are cool amps but they are kinda over complex or something you shouldnt have to do so much to a high priced amp
Hi, did you end up grounding the reverb tank? What resolved the mechanical feedback you were getting?
I did add shielding tape to the cardboard base of the reverb tank with no improvement. The feedback was just a microphonic tube which I replaced. The stock tubes are really unreliable.
The residual noise is due to strong electromagnetic radiation around the house. I live close to the railway line. In addition, the increased use of LED lighting in the neighborhood adds a significant amount of noise to the environment.
I hooked up a CB Radio and drove through the town, monitoring the noise level. It's insane how much there is right up until you leave the urban areas.
@@DerekHerbst747 Thanks for the reply. I've got the same feedback issue in my 2012 Supersonic 60 (V2). I've had the amp since new and it's only developed this issue recently. I've replaced the 12AT7 reverb tube with a known good one with no improvement (I've replaced the other preamp and power tubes too as they needed to be replaced). The interesting thing is the feedback doesn't happen when the reverb tank is out of the amp cabinet, but still plugged into the amp. So I'm guessing it's either a failed reverb lead, failed reverb tank, microphonic tube socket or something I can't think of.
@@LookingForEntertainment112 Try tapping on the cables between the tank and the chassis. You may be onto something.
@@DerekHerbst747 Will do, I miss using the SS60's awesome reverb. I've got some better quality cables for the reverb, so I'll give it a go and let you know!
How about the power caps, how is the quality, are they hard to change?
Not a nice job to change them. Getting the board lifted involves a lot of work, disconnecting lots of wires. There's no doghouse like the Deluxe Reverb. I can't comment on the quality of the Caps but I visually inspected these and they looked fine. No bulging or discharge. I'm leaving them be for now.
@@DerekHerbst747 I have the original Super Sonic 60 version and I had to replace all of the grey IC capacitors with F&T caps. They were leaking and causing major issues. I'm going to try your shielding mods in it to see if that helps with the noise and hum.
@@markhackett2740 I've had a lot of positive response to the video. I've not worked on the sixty but I suspect the architecture isn't too different from the 22. Let me know how it goes.
