Also, if it's a smaller disk (e.g. SSD, or 1-2 TB HDD), it may already have a "Master Boot Record" (MBR) partition scheme on it, which is kept by default on erasing. Switch to "GUID Partition Map" (GPT) for the "Partition" button to become available.
Very helpful. In case it helps others I was not at the top level of the drive when I started the erase process which led to some issues. I started again and now have it working perfectly for Time Machine and PC. Thanks. Maybe you could just try to say "You Guys" a bit more next time! ;-)
I just bought this, plugged it in and tried opening the installer for mac. But I got a message that said "The package was signed with a certificate that has expired. If you acquired this package recently, it may not be authentic. Do you want to continue with the installation anyway?" What are your thoughts? You totally bypassed this step. Should I just ignore the installer? Or is this an indication that maybe I was sold an old product and would have a void warranty? Thanks
@@TechandDesign Yeah, I contacted Apple and they were going to walk me through reformatting. They also said the message indicated that this is second hand. I ended up finding the distributer here in Hong Kong. Turns out that the product was manufactured in 2018 and the software isn't compatible with OS X. But they showed me the hard drive history as evidence that it had never been used before, but that it is just older, and that the warranty is unaffected. Anyway, turns out the software is just for password encryption, so I don't need it anyway. Thanks for the video and your reply!
Q. Say I wanted to use this on a Mac as outlined, plus an android phone so it can see it as a drive directly plugged in like a Note 10. So I save a section as exfat and can the note see that drive partition? If not, say 1TB drive was set to 500gb MAC, say 250 at Time Machine, what format does the last 250gb need to be for an android phone pls?
Strongly recommend you modify your video to put out a disclaimer. I followed your advice for the Samsung Portable SD T7 Touch external hard drive and deleted the files per your recommendation to format the drive. Unfortunately, I deleted the files required to set up the Touchscreen for fingerprint recognition. This SUCKS!
when I choose in time machine preferanses T7 for time machine use- macbook tells it cannot find disk to connect even its stay on the list of time machines.
Is there a way to confirm that the external drive does have the back up on it? I had one from an old PC and didn't realize there was nothing on it until I went to the Apple Store and they said it was blank...
Exact same instructions for a Samsung External Harddrive. No matter what brand or how much storage you choose, it’s the exact same instructions for a Seagate, WD, or Samsung. They are just brands, nothing more.
It’s the same when it comes down to formatting usb drive - it doesn’t matter what logo it has on it, it’s still a usb drive and will be formatted the exact same way.
@@TechandDesign Nope it's not. People are having issues partitioning these drives. Partition option is greyed out and erasing to any format is not allowing partition options.
Very good, thanks. Spent about an hour trying other explanations until you finally sorted it out for me.
Great video. You did an awesome job of explaining everything. Thank you!
Glad to help out
Many thanks for your VERY easy to understand explanation! I'm so relieved!
Thank you so much! You solve my issues with my new T7. Very easy video to follow.
Which program you use to record your screen in mac?

Hey I have a Samsung Portable Solid State Hd- I was looking forward to seeing how you set yours up by the description.
Yup. And this is how
Awesome! Consolidated info, great explanations.. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I just got my 1TB T5 yesterday. Trying to partition but it is greyed out. On Catalina 10.15. Not sure how to go about. Can you help?

In disk utility you can see how much free space it’s got
if its brand-new do you have to erase?
if you don’t want to run into any errors down the road yes
@@TechandDesign ok thanks !
