Star Wars: The Phantom Menace OPENING NIGHT NEWS SEGMENT

  • Local SoCal channel 13 news did a piece on opening night back in 1999. How many people in this review stand by their words? Guess I was a bit ahead of the curve in my distaste for the film. I think I was pretty kind to it all things considered. It's interesting to note that even back at that very first viewing I wasn't buying into the hype, and I can still stand by my words today. I didn't care for the characters then or now. Also interesting for me personally is the fact that my only other actual TV appearance is along with Alan Frio again from Hard Copy!

      The last fight is just Cirque du Soleil
      with a double-ended glowstick. It's so overly choreographed that every move and blow feels hollow and endlessly rehearsed, and since there's nothing at stake because it's impossible to give a shit about the characters, the only thing going for it is the music.
      Basically, if you enjoyed that fight you probably have to wear a padded helmet because you're easily distracted by pretty lights and "woosh" sounds.

    I really feel like that the people who thought the characters didn't have any personalities really just didn't understand the characters from the film. Obi Wan is the counter to Qui Gon as he's the traditional Jedi while Qui Gon is more of a Rogue Jedi who bends the rules for the greater good of the Force and is more committed to the Force than the Jedi Code. Obi Wan can be snarky and arrogant in nature and he sees average creatures as pathetic life forms and doesn't see their worth like Qui Gon would. Qui Gon meanwhile is seen by Anakin as a father figure. Padme Amidala is naive yet caring and brave. She looks for peaceful solutions and negotiates things through, however she'll resort to violence if she has to. Padme also speaks in a very formal manner that sounds monotony, and yet she'll really only talk like this when playing the 'Queen' role. She's assertive and talks back against plans or ideas she doesn't approve of while being soft-spoken. She's curious about all sorts of worlds and wants to explore them. Now I could go on but you get the point, and while yes the characters could perhaps be more complex, I don't think they really need to be. They fulfill their roles in the story and have as much character to them as characters from the Original Trilogy did.

    We should remember that CGI wasn't as cringeworthy as it is today, it was still fresh and TPM did push the boundaries in that regard. So it is understandable that people who loved it at the time would have a change of mind over time because those early CG-based effects really don't age well. Kinda like the early 3D video games look shittier even than the early 2D ones.

    I have always liked the Phantom Menace, Liam Neeson probably has a lot to do with it but I love Ewan McGregor too. Nothing could ever beat the originals but the prequels to me are better then the crap Disney turned it into lol

I recorded it the night it aired after I was interviewed never imagining those thoughts would only be reinforced with countless viewings since.

    I wonder what the guys who bad mouthing Episode 1 think of Disney Star Wars especially The Acolyte!

    • @wired525
      @wired525  3 місяці тому

      I posted this video and I’m the guy in the black hat. I stand by those initial opinions and have seen the movie at least a dozen times since, typically with the curious notion if I grew to enjoy the film more since seeing how terrible the franchise has grown to become. It shocks me to say it but The Force Awakens is easily the best consistent piece of new Star Wars that’s works. I HATE that they didn’t trust the audience enough to tell a completely new story but in many respects remade ANH. That being said I felt they nailed the SW tone and style. It’s a fabulous looking well made fun adventure with a great mix of new and legacy characters. The box office reflected this. People enjoyed it and were excited about a new trilogy. TLJ is stunningly beautiful visually and has plenty to love but man oh man what it fumbles is unforgivable. ROS is by far the biggest SW failure, bar none. TPM is the worst beginning of a SW trilogy. Of course it can’t compare to ANH and TFA is better in every respect - flaws and all. TPM has gotten much hate and kids who grew up with it are trying their level best to retconning it into being great. Enjoy it if you really like it, but please stop trying to convince others to join your cult of apologists. Ridiculing me for having an opinion I gave honestly mere minutes of walking out of the opening night screening (and surprisingly never substantially changed) is pure futility. Please stop being surprised there are still so many who just don’t love this movie. Ironically I just read an article that sums up most of my SW feelings quite well. www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2024/06/25/the-acolyte-rotten-tomatoes-score-keeps-falling-and-maybe-it-should-if-we-ever-hope-to-find-balance-in-the-force/ Yes Mando and Andor had great stuff but the SW TV shows mostly to me only deliver sporadically. I tried one episode of Acolyte. The bad outweighed the good with the other shows and I’m left with a thin tolerance. The good will has long burned off. If you can’t convince me to keep watching after a full episode, I simply have better things to do then be disappointed again. I adore the SW that worked for me. The original trilogy of course. The Thrawn trilogy. Some excellent comics. Episode 3 was seriously excellent but has flaws. Mando and Andor had enough to satisfy, but with so many missteps, Disney doesn’t get much slack from me.

    disappointed with the ending? It's only part 1 of the trilogy and he should have knew that. Of course the film did not have a real ending. Did he expected the whole story? That is like being disappointed by the ending to Lord Of The Rings Fellowship Of The Ring or The Avengers Infinity War. You should know it's not the actual ending and there is more to follow.

    So you're the clown they interviewed saying that the filmed lacked personality? care to elaborate on how that can possibly make sense for a movie that was literally ALL personality and not corporate Hollywood in any way?
    It's remarks like that which is why people are looking back on the prequel hate and realising how moronic it was in the first place.

    • @wired525
      @wired525  7 місяців тому

      Yeah, I'm the clown. Those comments were made fresh after seeing the film for the first time in a sold out theater that screamed our collective heads off during the opening title then sat in mostly bored silence until the podrace and end lightsaber battle. I have since seen the film many times. You want elaboration? First, having personality or not has zero significance whether the film was made in the corporate studio Hollywood system or not. The first Star Wars has tons of personality and was funded by 20th Century Fox. Hardly a privately funded endeavor. Putting that poor argument of yours aside, I did not connect with ANY of the characters in a meaningful way. I liked Qui-Gon but found him a one note stoic mentor. Obi-Wan has good will from his Alec's version, and I love Ewan as an actor, but in this stand alone film he just wasn't very interesting. Padme was a monotone bore, and little Ani and Jar Jar were just annoying. Maul had incredible potential, a great performance from Ray, but in the end felt wasted. Lucas himself wished he didn't kill him off. I feel Episode 4 and even Episode 7 had more compelling characters to begin their respective trilogies extremely well. I also feel time has proven my point of view to be quite commonplace. I am far from the only person to hate on TPM. Both episodes 1 & 2 had / have plenty of aspects to like, even admire, but ultimately fail to stand on their own as good films. Revenge has some flaws but I feel learned well from the mistakes of 1 & 2 and is a fine film. I have a lot I like in The Last Jedi but cannot overlook the painfully bad that sinks it, and Rise is epically awful. Bottom line - I don't feel any of our negative feelings were moronic. In comparison to the sequel trilogy, the prequels benefit from a singular vision, no doubt. That doesn't make them great, but does however shine a spotlight on how poorly executed the sequel trilogy was. Anyone like you can play revisionist that TPM is wonderful, and hell there were plenty of people back then who loved it, but having a different opinion than the one you so carefully plucked from your ass doesn't make it wrong. But chances are it smells better. Love what you love, even crap like The Phantom Menace, but maybe refrain from attacking others just because they don't like a kids movie (George's words) you happen to think is 'literally ALL personality.'

    Prequels were the best. Episode I was a great movie (along with prequels II and III, despite what neckbeards & nerds tried to convince people!). Sadly the aggressive neckbeard/ nerd culture attacked those movies with lies & falsehoods. They are the very reason Star Wars was sold to Disney! An earlier form of cancel culture. George Lucas got tired of being harassed by nerds making things up and he was getting older. It is what it is. Maybe the whiny nerds should have appreciated those films the way the majority of regular people did with the prequels (they were better than the originals). Nerds were cheering when he sold it and then whined with The Last Jedi. Those nerds also tried to prop up junk like Rogue One, The Force Awakens and The Mandalorian.

    The movie we never asked for, never wanted turned out to be a disaster. Darth Maul could have been a cool character, but he just sucked along with Anakin, Jar Jar, and did Ewan ever watch Star Wars? Ewan was the worst Ben Kenobi. Ben was a wise gentle person. Ewan is a pissed off arrogant prick. What a terrible actor.
