I'm not an authority but it has been claimed that the Gilligan ship sequence where they set out to see is from the Newport channel next to CDM. (Some argue that is false.) At any rate, people very specifically and vehemently claim that Newport and CDM/Pirates Cove was NOT on Gilligan -- that it was shot on Hawaii(the pilot); one thing shot at Malibu; and all the rest at Republic Studios.* Less debated than that it has also been claimed that "You can climb over the rocks to Pirates Cove where the original version of Treasure Island was filmed in 1934" - though imdb lists several location and that's not one of them. I also vaguely recall the Newport Harbor tourist cruise (they had a "north one" and a "south one" - both very recommended) with the narrator also saying that about Pirates Cove and the Treasure Island movie. Note, there were multiple Treasure Island movies. I once lived a few blocks away from the beach and jetties, but in the olden pre-Internet 1990s you had to learn things piecemeal and by word of mouth. Plus I've flushed a few brain cells since then, so my memory is dull on this and wasn't authoritative to begin with! * See video Gilligan's Island FILMING LOCATIONS Revealed! Before and After/Then and Now! for extensively researched information about the lagoon and sets at Republic Studios in Studio City in 1964. Fun and interesting 10 minute treatment.
Um, set out to SEA, not see :) It's commonly said that Gilligan was connected to Newport and CDM, but everyone who has authoritative sounding specific knowledge says they had nothing to do with CDM.
Lived in Newport Beach for many years in the 90's. The whole area is a great place to live, but CdM is utopia. Five crowns is a great place to eat and Fashion Island always has the tallest Christmas tree in the USA.
Great video on the area, Chris! I will have to try “Five Crowns” sometime! Also, there is a gazebo from Disneyland that was given to Roger’s Gardens years ago, so you are right that it feels like a Disney vibe there!
I absolutely love this beach and I love that Gillgans Island 🏝 was filmed there. Living vicariously through your video. Now I need to make my appearance there! Thank you for this video.
Corona Del Mar looks like such a beautiful beach area. I love that so many tv shows and movies have filmed here. With all the shopping and dining options, this looks like a wonderful place to spend a day. Though from the sound of it, I couldn't spend much longer than that. Thanks for taking us along Chris!
I've always wanted to visit Newport Beach and I've never explored this area. You make really great travel guides, so much useful information. Thank you!
That was fanastic!!👍👍. I read somewhere a funny story about President Nixon dropping in at Five Crowns for an unplanned last minute bite of dinner🙌🏻😂. The owners thought it was a joke when the Secret Service called to say they were about to walk in🙌🏻🙌🏻😂
Thanks Chris for another great video. Will you be leaving work at lunch time tomorrow to head to another Theme Park? HA HA HA Hope the Easter Bunny is good to your Little Explorer......and also to MacGyver. lol
Nice and informative video, thanks. Hope I can visit the places you showcase one day. In the unlikely event that you ever travel to Germany again, I recommend you check out one of the garden centers here. Normally I try avoiding being "that guy", but if you like big garden centers, you might like to visit some of the ones in Germany. Germany has basically turned into a country sized retirement home and if there is one thing old Germans love, it is their gardens and fiddling around with flowers and stuff like that, so there is tons of demand for this kind of stuff, with means huge, fancy garden centers out the wazoo. I live in a tiny village with less than 3000 residents and even we got a pretty big and well stocked garden center and only like a 20 minute car ride from here, there is a huge one that almost has amusement park dimensions. The section that sells Christmas and other holiday decorations alone is as big as the average IKEA store and you could genuinely get lost in the "little and not so little frog sculptures" section alone, hehe. If I remember correctly, they have 2 restaurants, several concession stands in between the sprawling garden displays surrounding the store and a two story daycare center / play ground with a "Ewok village" style collection of tree houses, connected by rope bridges and life size wooden dinosaurs to climb around on and so on.
Nice way to start my day, watching this video & bringing back wonderful memories of The Newport Beach/Corona Del Mar. Love the foot bridge. Missed the Little Traveling Princess, but always a pleasure watching you. Thanks Chris
We just got back from CA and went on a whale watching tour out of Newport Beach. It was so beautiful there! I love your beautiful state Chris! We had an amazing time!
Was looking for something to do after stopping by UC Irvine. This looks like a great way to spend the afternoon. Crystal Cove looks cool too! Thanks for a great guide!
Closer to the Jetty at the main beach is the sandiest. I think for the best sand bottom beach for kids is the beach at Newport Beach Pier.. no rocks at all
I really like the scenes around Little Corona with all the tidepools! The water looked really clear to where you could see the sea life. Corona Del Mar looks amazing, but it looks crazy expensive!
Hi Chris. Thanks for the info. Definitely a beach where I can really relax and enjoy the beach. Not to crowded and an easy walk on the beach. A place that many people can enjoy.
I went to CDM many years ago for a school field trip! It was cold and cloudy that day so I never gave it much thought after the trip, but seeing you explore every nook and cranny makes me wanna revisit it as an adult 🤩
Corona Del Mar looks like a fun and quick getaway. I LOVE pocket beaches, and your guides are so informative and concise. Chris, you really have a knack for food and travel!

Yeah. Its worth about a day unless you're a shopaholic at the mall. It's a pretty small area :)
We just went to Fashion Island recently. I have a video of the Koi Fishes. We also went to Crystal Cove because of your video. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool Pinoy Family! I hope you liked Crystal Cove!

Thanks Ticket for Two.. both are for sure great places to visit after UCI.
Does corona del mar have a rocky shoreline? I usually go to dana point traditionally but them damn rocks at that beach hurt my kids.
