Venomous fish in Grenada...they're so tasty! | Ep114

- There's lots to do in Grenada on and off shore. Diving on the underwater statues in the marine park was a real experience and we get out first taste of Lionfish, delicious!
As with everything in life there are challenges though as Judy has to make an unexpected trip to the States and I have to deal with getting the boat settled in a very rolly anchorage.
Many thanks to Tom and Crispin from Aquanauts for explaining the Lionfish problem to us and to Joel and Carston for talking to us about their epic trip.
You can learn more about what Aquanauts do here:

And you can follow Joel and Carston sailing across an ocean, dodging the orcas in the strait, the pirates in the Red Sea and sailing through a war zone in the Middle East on 'Bums on a Boat' here:

I think you are right. In a crowded mooring area, you shouldn't hang out permenant anti-roll beam or stern lines.
You make such interesting videos…underwater statues…nasty but tasty fish…love streams & green landscapes….hope your dad is ok…
Lion fish are super stupid too. You could swim up to them with a hot frying pan and they'd just stare at you...
I’ve always stayed well clear of Lionfish when scuba diving as I knew the spines were poisonous. But never knew they were good eating, after careful preparation!
I would love to see some more blue water footage so I would recommend Brazil! See where the mighty Amazon meets the Atlantic, bounce down to coast to Rio de Janeiro, then of course to Itajai where the Ocean Race stops in. Hop down to visit Uruguay then Buenos Aires, continuing South to Ushuaia, then it's an easy shot east to Cape Town. I really think Fair Isle would enjoy the voyage.
Try sweet ruca - they just did chile and the cape of.
Thank you for sharing the Sculpture Park with us! The information about the Lionfish was very interesting. Safe travels. ❤
Beautiful area
I've always worn thick gloves and trimmed the Lionfish barbs with scissors. You can then filet it as any other fish ((just get them all). I trim all the fins down to the body to be safe and all is good. Definitely hit the Grenadines. A different world than Grenada. I wasn't a super fan of Martinique although for first world items (like groceries), hard to beat a good Carrefour (in that part of the world) until you get further north. Another place I recommend is Îles des Saintes in Guadeloupe although its a bit of a haul from Grenada. Just don't use the main bay (in front of the town) as it will make the swell at Prickly Bay seem like a farm pond. Explore the surrounding islands for a great time. There are essentially no boat parts or services so be forewarned.
Yes, these fish are all over the Caribbean, Atlantic and Mediterranean waters - they are invasive survivors and multiply rapidly.
When carefully prepared, they are tasty!
We had a bunch from a dive near Destin, Florida. The crew prepped the fish and most of us would bring them up (carefully), one at a time.
Don’t miss Tobago cays, then happy island at Union Island.
Have you not come across Jenny’s farmers market. She visits marinas and sells lots of local veggies grown in her small holding
We have read about her in St George’s but it seemed she makes sauces and things, didn’t mention veggies
Definitely check her out, all her fruit and veg is organic too ☺️
Ah my beloved Grenada. Bought a beneteau 21 there in 2010. Loved Rogers bar down at hog island. Clarke's court bay playing cricket on the green grass before they built the marina. Halcyon dreams. 😊
Hi,thank you for a very good video. The locals have certainly got their work cut out ridding the area of lion fish.Unfortunately man’s indiscriminate treatment of nature.Cheers Roly 🇬🇧.
Great video! Thank you for your efforts
Again, i have loved your latest episode. I remain as a UA-cam cabin crew member having a free ride 😊 ❤ and Judy looks super nice as always xx
Another great video…the statues are awesome, the inland pools are beautiful. Hope you had a good visit with your dad Judy
Absolutely fascinating. Thanks so much!
Hi Steve. Another great episode. Stunning videography. BTW... be interested in understanding how the Orca navigation system is performing? 🤔 All the best and happy sailing 😊
I'm waiting to have a zoom meeting with their tech guys before putting together the video, but generally its a good bit of kit that seems to be developing fast.
@@svfairisle Hi Steve. Many thanks for the update. I look forward to hearing your comments etc. I'm in the final stages of refitting our boat for blue water and thought an Orca might be a good idea in addition to Seapro a computer based charting package. All the best. Steve G
Bequia ... Chatam Bay , all so nice . Enjoy your stay in the Islands .
when in the area, try Mustique ... private island with a bar that is accessible to the public. And if I am not mistaken, Mick Jagger shows up in that bar occasionally ... ;-) we missed him a couple of years ago by just a few days. 🙂
I've seen lion fish hunting before. I have seen poultry shears or a meat clever used. I think the french colony islands have great pastries and i think the home govt subsidies food so the prices are less bad. Brickhouse had some robbery issues on one island . cant remember which
Fantastic reports❤️❤️❤️Greatings from the „sapore di mare“ Christa and Robert /Graz/Austria 😎💕❤️👍
S & J, come to BC Canada, it's summer here, and you are both famous here. Regards Billy
Maybe next year! I’d like to sail BC and the PNW
@@svfairisle sounds good
Was wondering what Happened to Joel after his last fiancé unceremoniously dumped him... nice to see he landed an even more attractive lady.
Hello Steve: for a boat your size... what type and size of kedge anchor you have/recommend?
Well with the Danforth type anchors that most people use for a kedge its more about size than weight, they hold with the flukes grabbing the bed so the bigger the better. It really comes down to how big you can manage to handle for the uses you think you need it for. I probably couldnt hand pull a bigger anchor up into the dinghy, which I often have to do. But I could go aluminium and go bigger and get less weight and more hold. I think aluminium Danforths are a good idea.
@@svfairisle Many many thanks for the detailed and swift response.
Getting my fix. Yippee.
have you tried using a bridal to hold you at an angle to the wind?
The bridal tends to work for up to about 30 degrees but this is more like 90 & the wind is strong so a kedge is the best option I think
@18:20 Ceviche time!
If we could buy lemons and limes for less than 2 American dollars a piece in the Caribbean maybe! What the hells going on with the price of fruit and veg here? Why isn’t it grown locally?
@@svfairisle Bidenomics.
fun video guys
I think Hurricane Season starts June 1st
Yes officially it does, we will be a bit late out but we will keep an eye on whats happening in the Atlantic, you get enough warning to run!
Mustique!
😀😀👍👍❤❤
Enjoyed you taking us to Granada !. The statues seem to be a bit of a folly. Trailing the hose seems awkward (weights would make getting down easier) and it looked like you could get fowled up in the statues. Nice lionfish discussion and demo..
Yes we forgot to put the weights in the dinghy! I could just about manage, but Judy is more buoyant and struggled to get down. The statues do pose a hazard to wrapping the hose but it's actually easy to manage and other than that you have no idea the hose is even there. On the whole for us having the hooker system is so much better than trying to carry dive bottles and all the other paraphernalia that goes with them on the boat
Please tell more about your experience with the hookah. I’ve always thought that would be a good way to clean the hull and check the anodes, too.
@@WilliamAArnett We featured the Blu3 in the last 'Great things to have on your boat' video...ua-cam.com/video/o5mGjmE7Grs/v-deo.htmlsi=gRde3sOO_SUd_3Wy
I've got a few underwater boat jobs to do at the moment so will show it in the next episode I think, got to screw in some small fridge anodes so will be a good test of how easy it makes things. I know I wouldn't be able to do it with just a snorkel
