When I saw the film and all those boxes (Árbenz, Sukarno, Allende, etc) I was thinking *I wish thse guys now made a documentary like this about each one of those coups*
A tsunami of wisdom, thanks Maggie. My favourite film book is The Conversation by Walter Murch and Michael Ondaatje, he pulls the curtain back on sound design and teaches you how to listen to a film.
Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh holy balls! Maggie, congrats on this awesome interview and being able to fulfil a whoooooole lot of film school kids dream of talking with Walter Murch (myself included)!!! Keep on rockin', gurl!!!! Also, as someone who's half Bahraini and half British who's been living in the US and the UK for the past decade) trying to get across to people in both countries the history of their "meddling" in our region of the world and how much it's messed us up both in the past and continuing through the modern day is just staggeringly hard, so you bet your bottom dollar that I've been recommending your video essay and Coup 53 to my neighbours, friends, and pretty much anyone who will still listen to me!
as a little kid my brother told me about the Return to Oz & the wheelers I thought that as somebody with cerebral palsy and a electric wheelchair user once I finished puberty and having been told I had bad posture from my schools physiotherapists I would end up evolving into a Wheeler once I reached adulthood
If I had the adaptation rights to the Wizard of Oz I would have made the movie the Craft the sequel to Return to Oz with Dorothy Gale's descendant getting controlled by the Spirit of the Wicked Witch of the East
