Dung Collection Day and a Check-in with Elephants, Khanyisa & Bubi

- We frequently monitor the well-being of the elephants in our care in different ways. One way is through their dung. We collect samples of the dung they drop out in the bush where we can see whose dung belongs to whom. By analysing dung glucocorticoid levels with Dr André Ganswindt, Director of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences Mammal Research Institute (University of Pretoria), we can successfully measure the stress levels experienced by our elephants. This helps us to tailor our care to each elephant and ensure that they are not under any stress.
In this video Owen shares the dung collection process and also checks in with Bubi, to give insight into her recent tusk breakage. Tusks continue growing throughout an elephant’s lifetime, and they are prone to breakage as elephants use them for digging, breaking and stripping bark, sparring and more. Fortunately it isn’t painful, as Owen shares and Bubi’s tusk will grow back in no time.
Khanyisa has grown into a beautiful elephant thanks to all at Herd.
Thank you, also for being part of her journey.
@@herdelephantorphanage it has been my real pleasure, I have watched her since her first day at Herd and you guys have performed a miracle with her. She brings tears to my eyes.
Yes Amen
With much love to all of you and thank you for all your love and compassion and of course hard work ❤ 💜
You are so welcome, thanks for watching.
Adine, it is so gratifying to know that you have someone like Owen who knows all of the procedures in case you have to leave for a short time for whatever reason.
We agree, Owen is an indespensible member of the herd and HERD.
Thank you to the lovely Owen and Adine for presenting this and also the beautiful elephants of the herd. I love how daintily Khanyisa was eating, not letting the food dangle out of her mouth….lol. ❤️🥰🐘
Our little dainty Princess 🩷🐘.
Thank you Adine and Owen for today's video❤😊❤😊
We, hope you enjoyed it!
Klaserie made me laugh. I think she was offended that Owen took her toy away. 😂 Very informative video and always happy to see Khanyisa.
Awesome, 🐘💕.
Thank you Owen for your explanations and information on the elephants' health! Thanks to you and Adine and all of HERD for looking after the eles and making sure they are ok. ❤❤🐘🐘Hello Khanyisa sunshine! Hello Bubi! 🐘🌄
Thank you so much for watching the video and for your feedback.
Klaserie is too adorable. How dare Owen not let her participate!
😀
Morning everyone, good to see some behind the scene going on, interesting to see checking to make sure the elephants health is monitored, excellent work and of course thank you to all the staff that keep this herd healthy
Thanks for your feedback and support.🐘💕.
When Klaserie let out a trumpet i laughed so hard 😂
I love Klaserie’s inquisitive trunk. I would think she would be a delight to follow around.
Interesting info. It was funny when Klaserie complained vocally when Owen wouldn’t allow her to investigate the dung!😀 Hi, K!
Klaserie did make me giggle too when Own took the (what looked like) a laptop away and she wasn’t happy.😂😂🐘❤️
I knew elephants could be cheeky, but to try and take the sample collected.😅😅 That was funny.
Very interesting when Owen explained taking dung from middle.
I can almost hear Klaseri asking Owen, why on earth do you want our dung?! And, yes, Sussie is very cute! I love to watch her eat. She has very delicate table manners😅. Thank you Owen!🐘🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sussie is a real "little" lady.
@@herdelephantorphanage And isn't she just!😅
Klaserie 🐘 was making her presence know when Owen moved the cooler 🤣.
Thank you Owen and Adine for explaining how you take dung samples. Obviously you can get a lot of information from a dung sample.
Hello Khaynisa 🐘 you are such a beautiful young elephant 🐘.
Good morning Bubi.
How has Bubi been since the loss of Phabeni 🐘? I know she was one that looked after him also.
I hope you all have a great day. Love from Florida ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Love learning about the elephants. The dung comes out looking like mulch already, good fertilizer for the bush plants and trees.🐘💖
That it very true, you may like to read more about the dung from our blog, link posted here: -herd.org.za/blog/look-inside-the-herd-elephant-dung-compost-project/
Very nice presentation, very nice Ellie with pink eyelid and pink lips?????????? Wonder who it could be?
Oh! Oh! O! Why isn't our big baby girl Khanyisa. NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!❤😊❤
Ah, thanks so much for your lovely feedback.
Thankyou Owen and Adine. Very informative video of dung. Interesting how you can determine stress from it. Klaserie making her trumpet sound when you took the box away. If that was her, of course. Inquisitive one she is. 😁❤🐘
Cute. It is always a pleasure to share interesting elephant information.
Sending love to all 🐘 🐘 🐘 and🚶♀️🚶♂️🚶♂️🚶♂️❤❤❤
Thank you Adine and Owen - not forgetting Klaserie The Curious! Amazing what can be determined from a dung sample. The miracles of Nature 😊🙏🏻🇬🇧
We are glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much for watching Jan.
Goodmorning HERD!!! Hope today finds everyone well. Sending so much love to all especially for keeping the elephants safe and healthy! Suzanne USA
Thanks for your ongoing support and feedback, Suzanne.
The ellies are so well-cared for. They look well and content. Khanyisa is plump and cute.
Hi Adine. Hi Owen. I just love Khanyisa face, especially her eyes. She should be in a Disney movie!
Please don't give Miss Diva any ideas, 🐘🩷😉.
Thanks for the poop on dung samples. Close monitoring of Elephant health, both physical and mental is so important. Have a great day. 🐘😊
Thanks for your feedback and for watching the video clip.
@steventrompeter9883 🤣😉🐘🙋♀️
I think Owen may have a new field assistant for dung testing.
So interesting to hear the carers also - what wonderful sanctuary!!
Thanks for the education. Klaserie is a riot! 🐘😂
Khanyisa uses her trunk more effectively than I use my own fork lolol...
Thank you so much for all of your videos and for educating us. Much love to you all, every day. The elephants have become a very important part of my daily life.💖
That is wonderful to hear, we believe that sharing these tidbits highlight the many facets of elephant well-being.
@@herdelephantorphanage 🙏✨💖🐘💖✨
🙏🐾🐘🍼💚Bless your heart, Owen! Highly appreciated for sharing your knowledge and input on these magnificent Ellies!💚🐘🍼🙏🐾P.S. Dearest Adine, it has been two weeks of our Seuntjie's passing and my thoughts are if a "Fairy-tail Ellie-Mom" with her wand would bring back that feisty, adorable and sweet Phabeni Beni Beni...💚🍼🐘🐾🙏I have been watching ever since A-L-L the videos from the Rescue until Forever!🌟🍼🐘🙏💚
You are very kind, thank for being a special part of or herd and HERD family. 💕🐘🐘🩷.
Thank you Owen !
Thank you so much, Adine, Owen, and everyone at HERD for all your great dedication and commitment to the overall health and well-being of the beautiful Jabulani herd ellies. It clearly shows that your care is born out of genuine love for them and your great passion for all that you do. These ellies truly receive the most excellent care from some of the best of the human race, and I have so much gratitude for the beautiful life that they are all living. Thanks Owen, very informative. Lots of reasons to pick up the dung. Hello sweet Khanysia! Lovely to see you again!
It is a pleasure; our superstar always enjoys making a special appearance.🐘🙂.
🌳🌿🌾♥️🐘dung collection day👍stay blessed always beautiful herd 🌾🌿🌳🙏🇮🇳
Thank you.
I love your videos so much more than other elephant video sites. Yours are longer, more informative & seem to let them be themselves more than entertainment for humans.❤
💙🐘💙
Wow, thank you! We are so pleased that you enjoyed watching the video clip.
@laurierice7687
Good comments. I agree! I have learned a lot from watching this channel. Blessings to you 💙🙏💙
@@laurierice7687 Great comment ❤️🐘
@@vivnoname Thank you! This morning on another site (which I won't name here) it was a bull Elephant's birthday. The owner yelled & called to rush him to come enjoy his "birthday cake". It made me sad to see a Ellie being yelled at & ordered around. It was meant to show how well they are cared for in the sanctuary. It didn't mean that to me.💔
💙🐘💙
yes!! agree totally ! adine has THE best videos and they long enough for you to able to fully understand and connect with this group of elephants and to HERDs mission
“There’s all of somopane’s dung”
“Yes that’s all my dung, what about it?”
Funny. 🐘🩷🙂
Sending ❤ to the Herd family from Adelaide, South Austalia.
Thanks, gladly accepted in Hoedspruit SA.🙂.👋💕
Good morning everybody!
❤🐘❤️😊
Good day 👋.
@@GuantanamoBayBarbie3 It’s good night from here in Australia, but good morning to you anyway. Enjoy your day ❤️🐘
Thanks a lot Owen, for the clear explanation! Very interesting.
I’m glad that you and the other carers take such good care of the elephants.
Greetings from The Netherlands.
It is an absolute pleasure; we are so pleased that you enjoyed the information we shard today.
Good morning everyone !! thank you very much Owen and Adine to share this morning video !!! and very tight scientific explanation ! on dungs ! Klaserie makes me laugh !! she is curious like humans !! She has been so adorable ! with his little brother ! ❤She is a very good girl like her mum !!!
Hello Claudine, we are always pleased to receive your joyful feedback, thanks for watching the video clip.
@@herdelephantorphanagethank you so much ! my pleasure 💕
Interesting how is done by the elephants Like we also are changing our whole body with new cells, so are the elephants, and all the other animals too.
Elephant dung, is also a resource with many benefits.🐘🩷
@@herdelephantorphanage For growing beautiful flowers too, I suppose! 😁 If cow and horse dung is good for that, I imagine elephants dung too, right?
Thanks so much for educating us....we would never learn this anywhere else❤
We are more than happy to share more interesting little pointers as time goes on, thanks for watching.
Who thought that dung could tell you so much about the health of an elephant.
Good morning 🌅. Big Hi Adine 🌹 and wonderful careers 🍀. All elephants 🐘❤️. Hi khanisa ❤️💕
👋👋👋👋🐘.
So interesting…Thank You…🐘
Good Morning everyone, there's no way you will get all that dung into that container, 😂 Thank for a very informative video, Adina 🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
Lol, we are glad you enjoyed the video.
It’s a good thing Elephants don’t fly !!! 🐘🐘🐘
Yes, can you imagine, compost everywhere.
Save me some dung please it will work a treat on my allotment. 🙂
The dung at herd is repurposed in many ways, maybe have a look at our blog, link poste here for ease of reference.: - herd.org.za/blog/look-inside-the-herd-elephant-dung-compost-project/
Thank you so much for this very informative video about these majestic animals. Hi Khanyisa l love you❤.
It says something that I enjoy watching the collection of elephant dung. It's so funny that the elephants are always curious about what is going on. Such curious, fascinating friends.
I love when Owen explains things! Please continue to let us know what you do, we love it, and it helps so much as we grieve with you on the loss of Beni.
🙏❤️🐘
I’m wondering how everyone is doing after the loss. Can you see stress in the elephants? Does the test pick up on those hormones as well? How are all the humans doing?
Using fecal samples is pretty common for measuring cortisol and other hormones in animals, same with saliva. So chances are, yes.
I hope we get to see what her dung results are, fascinating you also check the wild elephants dung. Thanks for sharing ❤.
It is a pleasure, thanks for watching.
Thank you for this most interesting video. I'm also interested in if it's possible to detect the sadness from Phabeni's passing in the dung?
Love learning about the process , especially the use of dung as a diagnostic tool. Owen is such a learned man who thoroughly enjoys his work not to mention his love of the entire herd.❤
Khanyisa is so cute…looks like she’s getting more character in her face…her forehead…so sweet. Good to see Bubi too..glad to learn her tusk is ok. 🐘🐘
I thought their tusks were sensitive to pain if they're damaged. So it depends upon the type of injury?
Hello Adine, I always feel inspired by your beautiful elephants, hope everything is going fine. 😊
Thank you, take care.
@@herdelephantorphanageI am always there for you guys. 💜🙏
@5:06 What is the bump on her trunk?
Good question I was wondering the same myself, worried it might be some cancerous growth :-(
Gracias ADINE , Gracias Señor Owen, exelente información para examinar cómo están en salud Classiere 🐘 Khanyisa 🐘 y Bubi 🐘
It is our pleasure.
Klaserie was not happy you moved the dung sample. Her really wanted to help and make sure Owen was doing it right😂
It's really beautiful to watch how both Elephants and humans are all one Herd together It's really a beautiful sight❤
Owen and his Assistant 😊
I love seeing Khaneyisa
We like that, "all one Herd together", thank you for watching the video.
💕
Thank you Owen
Good morning! This was very interesting and reflects the deep levels of love and care for the elephants. I think the only thing Owen didn't tell us was how often the dung is collected.
❤❤❤❤ ftom Texas
We are glad you enjoyed the video.
Dung tests: Babies weekly and on the older elephants only after any unusual events/incidents and/or as we deem necessary.
I’m so excited to see that bubi allows a human to come so close and touch her!! What a brave girl my bubi is
She is a very special young lady indeed.
Very interesting expert explanation and demonstration about the dung; and fun fact about Bubi's tusk. Sweet Khanyisa.
Thank you Owen & Adine for explaining the work that you do to monitor the elephants and see if they’re doing good. I don’t think Klassierie was happy having her playtoy taken away from her! lol. blessings to all of you for all your nurturing and caring for all of the elephants. Blessings always! ❤️🙏✝️💕
This was very interesting! So much to learn about the beloved elephants.
Glad you enjoyed it!

lol Klaserie got mad at Owen 😂😂. I love her curiousness though .
thanks for the video Adine and it was good to see Princess Pink ♥️♥️. i could watch these videos forever . Sending you all love from Texas

Hello to All the Herd!🐘 & Family too. A fantastic video about something I truly unaware of. It makes alot of good sense.😊 Thank you for sharing and Bless All of you. Susan 🍁🙋♀️🇨🇦🙏🐘🙏🐘🙏🐘🙏🐘🙏🐘🙏🙏🙏
Glad you enjoyed it Susan.
Very interesting Owen. I did not realize stress and hormones could be measured through dung. I love Miss Klassarie protesting because she has the need to know was hysterical! I love Miss Klassarie so much.❤️🐘❤️🐘❤️
Very nice video of the studies you do with the elephants health. It was also an eye opener to see you in coats and hats. Where I live in the US it is 103 Fahrenheit today!!
Owen, you're really take the science behind collecting dung samples to a new level. I think it's great that by studying these dung samples you are able to tell if something is amiss with the HERD! Look at how Klaserie is giving you a hug! She understood everything! !!!!!
Very interesting, Owen. It's great to know that day to day health checks like this are done and find problems at the earliest opportunity.
when we saw KHANYISA, we was thinking that it was "easy" to grow up a little elephant... after we cried for PHABENI 😢😢😢
🙏🐘💕.
Thanks Owen for the informative details! And my, Khanyisa’s tusks are getting long! Our baby girl is growing up.
I know we shouldn’t have a favorite, but she’s been mine since she came love her dearly thank you ALL for all you do Gods Blessings
Thank you, Owen and Adine! Just being able to see the Ellies makes me smile 🥰
I remember accompanying Chloe while she collected dung back in (northern hemisphere) summer 2017. One really has to keep a close eye on the ellies to catch it fresh! 😊
Good Day Mr. Owen and EVERYONE who cares ❤ for the elephants
🐘🐘 of the Herd.
This is good to watch, though I didn't know you could measure elephants stress levels by checking and "testing" their poop. 🐘 💩 🤗
It's nice to watch and learn many new things about elephants! 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘
I didn't know that either. Heck, I figured it would require a blood or urine sample.
Well not only can their stress levels be determined, but it is also an essential part of the ecosystem!
@@herdelephantorphanageThank you HERD for explaining that dung can be for a lot more things then just maybe one thing like an infection in the poop. I’ve just learned more. This Orphange is awesome and very informative too. Gof bless HERD.❤️🙏😘🐘🐘🐘🐘
Thank you very much, Owen and Adine. It was a really interesting explanation about our ellie friends. ❤
Khanyisa is so beautiful! ❤😮
A very thorough report and very informative. It shows how well trained these carers are. Impressive!
Thank you, owen, for the education 👌 it was funny that klaserie came around and had a look at what was happening ☺️🐘🫶 she's a very curious, sweet girl 🐘💗
im so fascinated about the trunk seeing Khanysia touching carefully taking special leaves 🍃..thank you Adine ❤
The ladies were very entertaining today.
Wow. So interesting about the tusk breaking off but that it re-grows like a human's fingernail. Time to open some Elli Nail Salons in the SAfrican Bush?? 😊
Thank you Owen for this interesting information !
It is our pleasure!
Thank you Owen. That was very interesting. Excellent explanation of reason behind dung samples.
Only 2 other comments on phobeni plus mine we love all the elephants and cheeky kanisha
I can’t stop thinking about him and I want him back. 😢
Grazie x questa spiegazione sulle analisi delle feci degli elefanti 🐘❤️ è molto interessante 🎉
Thank you HERD for your exceptional care of our beloved ellie family!
Very interesting info. about the dung. Can't believe how much Khanyisa has grown. A beautiful , sweet young lady🥰
Yes, Meisiekind is quite the young lady now.
Thank you so much for the very informative video. You all have to develop strong stomachs for collecting poop. I have to confess that I became nauseous watching the collection. But, it's part of the job and an essential part of studying these majestic creatures. Missing little Phabeni, but Klaserie was great comic relief today.
Oh dear, but remember elephants are herbivores, so the fragrance, is certainly not as unpleasant as you might expect! 🐘🌳💕🙂.
Thank you very much for your explanation of how to collect the dung appropriately❤ Hello Khanyisa how are you 😀
🩷🐘👋.
Gracias por el amoroso trabajo que realizan cada día para mantener a salvo y saludables a nuestros hermanitos elefantes y gracias por compartirlo al mundo.
Un abrazo y bendiciones para cada uno de ustedes hermanos HERD! ❤
