More Scrubs! Yet another cracking episode recommended by you! A couple of apologies: firstly not knowing what a Mike and Ike is (I even got it wrong when I looked it up! It's chewy candy rather than chewing gum), and also the contrast in the video is a bit dodgy as I under exposed the footage and had to crank it up in the edit (that's why I look like I have a mega tan). Let me know any other episodes or shows you want me to check out and I'm sure to do similar mistakes covering them too! Have a great weekend all. X

Hope that helps understand why everyone seemed to be treating this as an abnormally big deal within the show, and why this ending scene was supposed to hit the way it did.

When my Grandmother died, my auntie was given a box full of belongings that were completely the wrong person’s. Then when she did get the right box of possessions my Grandmother’s wedding ring was missing.

Both my late grandmother and aunt, who were both nurses, impressed upon us kids the importance of minimize hospital visits.
By exercising preventative care, and knowing how to handle small things (Colds, minor burns and abrasions, losing a toenail - yes that actually happened, wear boots when hauling paving stones, etc) you not only take unnecessary burden off of the health care system, you also avoid going to the place where all the sick people are.
Infections and reactions to medications take out way, way too many people every year. You owe it to yourself to minimize your exposure to hospitals and to pharmaceuticals.
Doctors are good, medication is good. Especially demerol. God bless whoever created demerol. But too much of a good thing, yadda yadda yadda.

    • @PushyPushyPhoenix
      @PushyPushyPhoenix 3 роки тому +4

In a similar vein my parents impressed on us from a young age (and by example) the importance of seeking a medical opinion when necessary - from needing help to quit smoking, to feeling that something isn't right. That's what the doctor is there for, after all. As a result we were always comfortable seeing our family GP, and caught several potentially harmful issues before they got to be dangerous or hospital-worthy.
After reading your comment, I'd theorize this is also another way to avoid hospital visits and thus lessen strain on the system?
(Fortunately living in Canada I've never faced the issue of having to pay for visits, but I recognize cost is a factor for many people.)
      Thanks for the insight. ✌️🍍

In the US most people avoid going to the hospital to avoid the 2-5 hour ER wait times and the bills. That’s why urgent cares are everywhere now and they’re normally vastly more helpful than going to the ER where absolutely everyone gets stuffed in a CT Scan or an MRI or both and then charged $3000+ per scan.

In the hospital I work at (in the Netherlands) it's pretty common to gift patients cards or other stuff if it is a special occation like a birthday or if someone has been lying there for a while. There even is a small budget from the hospital for that. However it is no policy, it is always on someone's initiative (99% the nurses)

As for the 'why we wear scrubs' thing, some years ago, my mum ruined a vascular surgeon's kashmir sweater. The poor woman had come in on the Saturday (not on call, just some patients of particular concern), and popped in to check in with her other patients. When she stopped by my mum, her AV fistula decided that was it's time to shine (and by 'shine, I mean 'rupture'), and... you can see where that story goes.

9:30 I was at a CPD session recently and forgot one of the golden rules. I lent a paramedic my pen and didn't hover to ensure I got it back.
Took all the stuff out of my pockets after that, put the stuff into new shirt pocket through muscle memory, turn up to my next shift with no pen (Luckily, I've taken to keeping a secret stash when I go out).
Out of the discussions on effective pit stop CPR, post ROSC recovery, PPE + AGP, etc, the thing that I took away was not lending my pen. And that paramedic took away my pen.

Episode suggestions are kinda hard because I need to change my focus to ones with especially good medical stories to make full use of your expertise :) I'm a little curious to see your take on some of the American-specific issues though.
"My Jiggly Ball" - Deals with finances and bureaucracy, and a great Kelso episode
"My Brother, My Keeper" - Not a huge medical story but a great guest spot by Dick Van Dyke about aging doctors
"My Big Bird" - Morbidity and mortality conference with a dramatic ending

My wife broke her neck about 12 years ago and ended up acquiring e vulneris at the end of her four week hospitalization. Soon after that she ended up with Non-hodgkins lymphoma. She survived both but to this day still takes 500mg Cephalexin every day. Of course the medical providers involved swore there was no correlation between the infection and the cancer but it's always felt very suspect to us. Scrubs is one of the best shows of all time. One of the few programs the whole family has unified around. Thanks for the content!

You know, having been in hospital in December, this show made me think I would see doctors a lot more than I did. XD
Interesting to see a doctor's review of this sort of content.

Weve made cards or sugned them for patients who have been on our unit for weeks. Granted its on a l&d unit, but we do become very fond of them and while we are happy for them to get to go home, we do miss them 😊

3:45 - This scene finishes with Keith trumping JD's gift to Mrs. Wilke as he invited Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who casually strolls in to wish her well. Do celebrities often make appearances during an outpatient's sendoff?

I will say that years ago I was in Hospital on IVs and something came up where I had to spend a couple extra days in (including my 21st birthday), and the HCA's on the ward bought me a large bar of Bournville Chocolate to help me feel a bit better. But the idea of receiving parting gifts from most of the Medical staff simply for being a pleasant patient is a bit odd.

Mike & Ike's are pill shaped licorice candies. While the Cherry ones are a translucent red color, the standard M&I is purple and white ones.

I know I watched too much scrubs when I noticed one scene started with the proper music with cabbage leaving and the next scene was streaming music so it wasn't the right soundtrack

I was admitted into the hospital for an infection of the surgery wound. (Broken elbow, the part where the triceps are connected) at some point they found out it was a resistant bug. They got me out of there asap with oral antibiotics. Was hooked on an IV for days before that.
Infection was probably caused because the suture they used inside was not dissolved after 4 weeks. When I pulled it out (accidently) the infection cleared up really fast.

Thanks for your excellent reaction video, Dr. Hope. Scrubs was such a good show...full of good comedy, and yet it brought up important topics that are still pertinent now. Another similar show is MASH, which I highly recommend. It was very kind of you to buy a newspaper for your patient, even if it was the Daily Mail! Our local hospital has newspapers available for patients if they wish, which I think is a great kindness. Take care, and stay healthy!

This is true for lab staff as well, there is only one brand of promotional pen from ONE supplier of reagents that is worth using, they are all garbage in some way and this one happens to have just one fatal flaw. The outside casing is solid metal but it screws into a hard plastic inner sleeve which then screws into the tip holder, and when you drop that pen, that inner sleeve shatters.
There's only one of the pens left, it's mine and you have to pry it out of my cold, dead, hands...
