- Every story has 2 sides. In these interviews William Regal and Bill Goldberg both give their interpretations of an incident that occurred in WCW in 1998, in which Goldberg claims Regal set out to hurt and embarrass him. Whose side do you believe?
Regal sounded legit. Goldberg sounds like he's still embarrassed.
Goldberg ALWAYS sounds like a fucking pychopath. Listen to him talk about kicking Bret Hart in the head, and says that he considered wrestling as a real competition, and "throwing people to the lions" in terms of how he treated them.
I can't even believe WCW would throw veteran ring-technicians to that greenhorn-ape.
1 minute in and regal stiff kicks him with the point of the boot in the kidneys 3 times and in the eye 2 times later....a WORK....ok then...left the legs curled on the jackhammer, making it look like a normal suplex...im just not seeing how regal was the better here.....

Diamond Dallas Page was able to give Goldberg the greatest match of his career. If Regal wouldn't be a JELEOUS coward he would also know how to make Goldberg look great. Instead of that he was playing a fool "I can't hit myself".

I will say this: Regal cut his teeth in carnivals. He is as legit a performer as we have ever seen. If he wanted to make Goldberg look foolish, he would have. If he wanted to hurt Goldberg, he would have.

Also, a carny shooter is a few notches below the ability of most MMA guys. While I have no doubt that Regal could kick my ass, he'd probably have trouble against a well trained fighter.
Draw millions on ppv, if you happen to be one of the few Dana White finger puppets, 95% of the UFC roster gets fucked over when it comes to monies, ppv cash......whereas most of the wrestlers get paid far more and have less chance of being injured
Regal came through in the 1980s and 90s. MMA made no money in those days.
Just rewatched the match. Regal's story matches the actual match. You can see when Regal grabs a hold to relay instructions. And from what I have heard about Regal, if he wanted to stretch Goldberg he had ample opportunities in this match.
Regal also no sold every offensive move Goldberg did and sandbagged him on the Jack hammer

If Regal wanted to take liberties with Goldberg in this match he could have twisted him into a pretzel and stuck Goldbergs head up his own arse.
Just watching the Match twice, you just realize that Goldberg couldn't counterwrestle and i think Regal tried to call it in the ring and Goldberg couldn't process regal's instructions fully thats why it almost comes off like a shoot and the timing was so off.
That made the match terrific. It wasn't just Goldberg crushing someone. The match G had with Meng was ridiculous. They built Meng as a monster, talked about him like a monster during the match, but G smashed him. Awful.

Just watched and agree fully. I could just imagine Regal during every close up saying do this and do that, and they pull away and Bill just stands there looking confused.
Okay, heard both sides; then took a look at the match on UA-cam. The entire match from start to finish. And even the announcers comments during the match made it clear who was telling the truth. Regal carried Goldberg through that match. Listen to what the announcers said. Even they seemed a bit surprised at how passive Goldberg was during the match. Regal clearly went out of his way to try to make the match look good. But it looked as though someone put horse tranquilizers in Goldberg's protein shake or something.

I've watched it more after this shows up years later in my recommendations, but any time Goldberg looked like he was going to do something, Regal countered or kicked him or reversed the arm lock. It looked like a few times Goldberg wanted to whip Regal into the ropes or have some offense in the corner but Regal refused to go with it or reversed it and did more offense.

Don't know man... I've watched that match now. Regal wasn't selling shit. Right up to the finisher, he threw his weight over so Goldberg couldn't hold him. Not to mention how many times he stiffed him... Regal had some clear animosity
If you ever see clips of regal helping upcoming talent at the training centers you know that the man is a true pro and one of the most underrated talents of all time. Hearing both sides of this Regal is the one who sounds legit
Goldberg couldn't do anything but squash matches. He was asked to go a mere 6 minutes and he couldn't handle it. If you watch the match, there were plenty of occasions, like Regal mentionned, where he could've made offensive moves. But he wasn't doing anything, so Regal had to do something about it. Goldberg can't own up to his own failures, it's pretty sad.

There were quite a few receipts left in that ring either way. Gillburg can't help his lack of competent management. Just another failure of the wrestling industry.
+MrSinister718 he doesn't care how he was at wrestling. He stated before that he made a lot of money and made a lot of good kids happy and that's what meant most to him. He could not care less what people thought of his wrestling as he was over and he got the fans approval, which til this day is the only thing that ever makes him consider wrestling.

i watched the match. regal left openings for goldberg to counter. yet he didn't. if it was based on just wrestling ability. regal would wrestle rings around goldberg.

Watching the Match Regal does hit Goldberg with cash register a few times throughout the match , i feel Regal feels like he really didnt take liberties because hes like that every match no matter who's in ring , he comes from that cut throat england Carnival scene , i remember matches where opponents got much worse from regal , but i see Bills side too he was brand new in business and very green I would feel the same way if i was him

How can you believe regal when he himself admits to being hard on drugs at the time?
Goldberg froze up and he was lucky he was in there with regal, who tried to salvage the match. A guy like Ken Shamrock, Bob Holly, Stan Hansen or Big van vader would just have just beat goldberg down in the ring.

Skeptical Ronin , Shamrock having little experience as well may not have known what to do and legitimately hurt Goldberg. Shamrock's a hothead, but in his WWF run he seemed earnest and willing to do what he was told. He was also a pretty badass motherfucker in great shape in the 90s, and easily could have ended someone's career accidentally had he faced a situation like Regal did with Goldberg.
Shamrock was trained by Bob Sawyer, Buzz Sawyer, Nelson Royal, and Gene Anderson all vets who would have seen goldberg's actions as being unprofessional, what you also have to remember is when he went to the wwf in the 90s he had only been wrestling in Japan where the guys work a LOT stiffer. If goldberg had done what he had done to a guy like Shamrock im sure he would have gone into Japanese mode and shot on him until he co operated.
It's almost sad that Goldberg is too stupid to see what was going on. Regal probably even tried to explain it to him afterwards but he's just too stupid to realize he was fucking up and Regal was doing what he could. If Regal had wanted to shoot to prove a point, the match could have ended in probably 30 secs or less with a front facelock/ guillotine choke.

And I love the fact that English wrestlers are always cast with snooty aristocrat gimmicks when wrestling's just as working class over here as it is in the States, so they always sound like Alexei Sayle playing a posh person
That's the thing. Goldberg was never a wrestler, he's a juggernaut straight from the football field. Absolute spear freak and that was obviously his character, world championship wrestling really fell through with booking goldberg and even preparing him for anything that wasn't a squash where he could hit his two tackles and the jackhammer, they really fell through also letting his streak end with Kevin Nash, the streak ending on those pretenses was pointless considering Nash cheated to win even though he was one of the most over faces at the time plus he gave it to the Hogan/bischoff regime a month later.
it's still one of the better matches of Goldberg's carreer. The best on I've seen so far

Was a good 6 minute match, Regal led the match well and a lot of little surprises in terms of blocks and reversals. Could and should have been looked at as the next progression for Goldberg beyond his usual 90 second squash matches. Regal took him to 6 minutes, showed he was a veteran toying with an inexperienced bad ass, but was ultimately overpowered with a couple moves and pinned. Expectation control, the office expectations was the issue, not the match.

After listening to both men, I am inclined to believe Regal. I just cannot believe a monster like Goldberg would allow himself to be ragdolled by Regal if he didn't want to.

It's not about who was tougher, stronger or a better fighter or whatever. It was miscommunication and most likely Goldberg was confused because he did not know what he should be doing as far as the script is concerned. Turning it into some stupid shoot would probably have backfired heavily on both of them and cost them their careers. Goldberg was simply most likely concerned about the match possibly going to shit if he did not comply. Both sides need to come out looking good in that situation and it's only natural that Goldberg would allow (as required by the script) a respected wrestler to get his moves in before he gets beaten. It would be a different situation with an unknown jobber where Goldberg would simply squash him.
Goldberg is also a legit tough guy.. if he was a shitty dude like regal he could have beat his ass easy. Regal hit him multiple times and ignored a few moves, unprofessional af. Cause he was whiny goldberg was getting all the hype.

I just watched the match and I feel in hindsight that it benefited both wrestlers. Regal looked tougher and Goldberg showed more technical ability than before. It's definitely a better match than Goldberg vs Lesnar.

I'm gonna agree with Regal. During the match it looked like he kept trying to get Goldberg to do things and kept giving him opportunities. Swore I heard him yell "C'mon Goldberg" at one point. So I'm thinking that Goldberg just doesn't want to admit that he fucked up.
The match was actually really good. It makes Goldberg look like more than a brute. It made it look like had to adapt to a unique wrestling style...and win. Which he did in the end. This match helped Goldberg.
agree 100%. goldberg did some cool moves in that match that looked butter smooth that'd he'd never done before and I don't think he's done since. Regal made him look great and those cheap shots Regal was taking made me want to see bill destroy him, so it was great heat.

I've seen the match hundreds of times, and from someone who has watched a lot of wrestling, you could clearly see there was one person in the ring who knew how to wrestle (Regal), and one person who was given a push based on his looks (Goldberg) that didn't know shit about wrestling. Goldberg was making all the rookie mistakes. He didn't know how to properly lock up, he worked the wrong arm, he didn't know how to take a corner bump properly.
The best way I could describe that match, is if you took someone who was fresh out of wrestling school who trained for 2 weeks, and put them against the most experienced technical wrestlers on the card, and told the technical wrestler to do everything in their power to make the green new guy look good and put him over.
Why would you watch that match hundreds of times?

But I've seen the match quite a few times and matches like it over the years where you have a highly inexperienced wrestler with a good look, and a veteran wrestler who's a solid worker being tasked to make a green guy look good. What ends up happening, is that you see how green and deficient the new guy is when the solid worker attempts to work a few basic things in.
Up until this point, all of Goldberg's matches have been one sided where its just Goldberg doing power move after power move and the other guy not getting any real meaningful offense in, much less attempting to work an actual match.
@@FreePlayMode I agree with you, 1 question though: did they rehearse the moves for the match back then? Because man Goldberg was so bad it looked like they just met before the match and were told "do this for 6 minutes and be competitive", because Goldberg didn't know what to do in the ring.

Perhaps because Regal got away with actually _hitting_ Goldberg for real? Not with a closed fist, but with stiff forearms and palm fists. Every time Regal got a good hit in, Goldberg just hollered and stared back at Regal in disbelief.
Regal has forgotten more than Goldberg knows. Regal has been involved with wrestling since he was an early teen and worked his way up from the very, very bottom. Goldberg was a flash in pan who only got where he was because of his size. Regal is a true a legend.
The truth is probably somewhere in between (as it usually is), but I'm more inclined to believe Regal. It might be that I just like Regal more. He was always a very entertaining wrestler
+arkayen666123 I think Regal was told 6 minutes...maybe to test Goldberg, Goldberg didn't expect a competitive match though. He expected little offense from Regal, but got more. So, Goldberg wasn't ready for it and looked lost, aka what Regal said, and Regal did MORE than he was supposed to because Goldberg was still lost and unaware at what was coming. So that being said, both wrestlers have truth to their stories, they are just uninformed of the others opinion and mindset

I rewatched their match for the first time in a long time. This was one of a few matches in Goldberg's run when someone else was instructed to take him longer than his norm. Regal, Hart, Douglas, Page, Sting, Hogan, and a few others all tried to get him to do more. WCW hurt him by making him the Incredible Hulk and smashing through everything. Then he comes to WWE and it falls off because they didn't want 30 sec Goldberg, they wanted more from him. He wasn't capable then. Now he's almost a different performer. But he's older and wiser now.
I don't think Regal was trying to do anything to make Bill look bad, I believe him when he says he went out there to have a competitive match as he was told to have. I thought it was a good match where Bill showed off his technical skills.
I am more inclined to believe Regal after listening to both sides. Regal was always a wrestler who never wanted the main spotlight on him, he helped to develop some of the best wrestlers of the time and some who are still going today. Plus he had been wrestling for a lot longer than Goldberg who was brought in through the WCW power plant, rather than have previous experience.
Regal had facts goldbergs is just salty and insulted him . HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO WRESTLE, he want to talk about roughness when he ended a legends career with a kick

I believe working with Gbg was entertaining for the viewers but dangerous to the wrestlers.
He always claims he'd like to do it again, but we all know Goldberg can't offer any offense against a shooter like Regal.

That's exactly what the problem is. He was on his way to becoming a primadonna when he was pushed way too hard, way too soon in his career. And he had very little skill in the ring and on the stick to boot so he was just a can of worms waiting to be opened up.
So many spots in the match where regal stands there and waits for Goldberg to do something and GB freezes.
Marks who say he also dead-weighted the finish, if regal was just refusing to sell why not just take a count-out?
I agree with some of the other comments. I think the truth is somewhere in between. I watched the match and thought Goldberg looked a little out of place and stiff. I think Regal could've taken more command of the situation. Then again, there's only so much a person can do. Some ridicule Regal saying he was hanging off Goldberg's legs. That's Regal's classical wrestling background. I know that first-hand from middle school. From what I've seen of Goldberg, this is not his thing. He's more MMA squash and get it over with and not the technical stuff. I'm slightly more inclined to believe Regal because of these things.
I agree but don't understand how people expected Regal, who was a mid card at best despite his overwhelming talent, to look like he was beating up goldberg when he laud waste to wrath, Hugh morris, roadblock, reese, and a bunch of other big guys prior to this. There IS a continuity wrestlers have yo follow.
+XMetalChefX regal was slightly above all those wrestlers on the card. He did win a few singles championships...so it makes sense that Goldberg would have a slightly harder time with regal than those other guys.
Maybe it makes less sense now because of the other things goldberg did after, I just remember not getting why Regal would be difficult for Goldberg. I definitely side with Regal tho. You can TELL in the match Goldberg doesnt know how to work with Regal.
+mandolinman2006 Regal has likely truth to his story, but Goldberg honest;y is unaware of what went down, so he isn't really in the WRONG. You can't truly be WRONG at certain things if you never knew to begin with imo. Goldberg expected 6 minutes probably, but was used to 2-3 with little offense from the opponent. Increasing the match meant the opponent would have more offense. That is what threw Goldberg off. He had his 3 minutes or so of offense, but didn't know what else to do, so Regal took over maybe more than he was supposed to. That being said, Regal was also not a WCW star so it made Goldberg look like he was losing a step in a way.
It looked to me like the 'Regal hanging off Goldbergs legs' was Regal giving up his back for strikes. This happened a few times. Goldberg did nothing, showing his inexperience. If Goldberg looked bad it was because he couldn't read when to make his move - as has been said he was very green at the time.
The poke in the eye-a standard heel move that Regal employed a lot- looked real but Goldberg was moving his head as Regal did it so I think it was probably accidental that it actually connected.
I remember that match but watched again to refresh, I remember enjoying it. It was one of Goldberg's longer matches, and he actually wrestled. And I had more respect for Regal afterwards as he led Goldberg through a decent match despite his being green at the time. We as audience members don't know the drama that often goes on backstage, Regal mentioned an Agent instructing him to make it a good match, then the coward bailed and let Regal take the entire hit. Regardless, I was entertained then and rewatching was enjoyable, as I haven't watched wrestling in about a decade...
the irony of goldberg complaining about someone hurting him is he hurt ALOT of people because of his lacknof in ring talent

It's tough. Regal admitted he was off the rails at that time so maybe wasn't completely clear when he was trying to lead the match. You could see in clips that Goldberg was no selling a lot of Regal's offense while not giving much himself so I think Regal got a bit pissed off and gave a couple of "wake up" shots to get the match going.
Regal was off the rails allegedly, but he didnt start stiffing Goldberg until he was no selling, which was in his right to do so. Goldberg showed that he was a gym rat that Vince wished to sign
My impression is that Regal had a detailed story behind this incident while Goldberg painted his story with very broad strokes.
I’ve watched this match multiple times... and Regal absolutely made Goldberg look like he had some technical skills. When he says “I’m trying to get him to do stuff” you can definitely see that. Goldberg only starts to turn it up towards the end. He did a poor job setting up that spinning neck breaker, and other things as well. If anything I think Regal made him look better, even with that poor display of chemistry and being on the same page. I was a big Goldberg fan but honestly he’s a one trick pony and as others have said he “still believes his own gimmick”. It’s also really fucked up that him of all people will complain about a kick to the head.

Goldberg wanted to be led through the match by Regal, he sells and counters, but Regal expected Goldberg to give him something back, not to have to dictate every move.
People seem to regret that at the time of the match Regal was a vet in the business and Goldberg only had 2-3 matches on tv.
Goldberg didn't know what to do, and in his eyes Regal took advantage of that.
Regal tried to get Goldberg to work a different match than he ever did and they clearly didn't go over what was happening enough.
Both guys are right.
An overall lack of communication and understanding between them is what happened here. I don't believe either guy was out to make the other look bad.
If the match with Regal had truly exposed Goldberg, Goldberg never would have gotten the strap. The fans would have stopped cheering, and the push would have ended. Looking back , it is pretty clear that the match with Regal did nothing to hurt Goldberg's career. That we know for sure.
Goldberg finally had to show actual technique, and not the same three moves for 90 seconds, and Regal should be thanked for it. At that point, it was one of the best technical matches he ever performed.

If Regal had shot on Goldberg..he would have known it and his monster aura would have been GONE./...As regal says he cant grab goldbergs arm and make him hit him. He put Goldberg in manuverus tailored made for him to power out and take advanatge and time and again Goldberg just takes them...He was a green Rookie who was right place at right time...Almost any big athletic man from Matt Morgan to Batista could have fit and doen the same as Goldberg did in that streak
This is where you see the stark difference between a man who has trained for years and someone rushed through it over a short space of time. If Regal had wanted to really lay it in, Bill would have damn well known it, but I have watched the match, and you see Goldberg missing his cues, and when it does get scrappy, it is because he is fouling up, not Regal.
Listen to the interviews. William Regal has nothing to prove in this industry. He was training from the age of 16 years old, and has proven many times just how capable he is, while Bill Goldberg was rushed out of the Power Plant too soon, and potatoed and injured guys numerous times by being careless. He should be thanking Regal, as despite Bill causing the issues, it was one of his best matches at that time, but now, his fragile ego can't take how he was carried through a match he let himself down in. Pathetic! I side with Regal, now and always.

If you watch the match, it certainly looks different. Miscommunication or whatever happened, to me it was an interesting match. If you ask me, Goldberg has much of the blame for not guaranteeing at least 6 minutes of wrestling, which was the time limit they were doing. Out of inexperience Goldberg botched the match several times.
Bill knows the truth, deep down. Regal did him a favor in that match, it was better for Goldberg to learn something than to have yet another 90-sec squash match! Put him in good stead for his title matches with Raven and Hogan, much later on. So he took some stiff hits, big deal...he shouldn't complain.
I think it's a miscommunciation because Goldberg was trained by WCW. So he expected a pretty soft, simple match when he was told to have a 'competitive match.' Regal was trained in a harder-hitting style, so his idea of 'competitive match' was a lot more aggressive than Goldberg expected. Goldberg got thrown off kilter by that, so he was struggling to get back into what he was doing, and Regal couldn't just stand there to wait, so he kept hitting him while trying to get Goldberg to do SOMETHING.
Goldberg, as he said, was giving Regal control. But Regal didn't WANT him to give him the match.
I was at the match in EL Paso and I was 17 so old enough to remember the match. Nobody cared in the crowd lol! Bill hit the spear and we all popped! I never understood the drama and I was fucking there lol!
Both sides seem truthful. After watching the match, which was a good match, & hearing both sides, it sounds like; Goldberg followed the lead of the vets. Regal & Goldberg didn't have great in ring communication, but watching the match, had good chemistry. It does look like Regal had some stiff shots, BUT, he was protecting the biz. Other than the Spear being a lil sloppy, I didn't see a problem in the match. Keeping Goldberg from stringing a group of moves together, I thought was good, because in his previous matches, when he strung some moves together the next thing you know, Spear, Jackhammer, 1 2 3. Goldberg's problem sounds like, he was unhappy with the stiff shots. Regal's bigger problem, sounds like, was the backstage BS, from the agents who said 1 thing before the match, then coward, instead of having Regal's back. Maybe it was a set up, to get Regal in trouble. He was coming off a suspension, for peeing on a stewardess.
The truth is they put a very talented wrestler in a ring with a guy that only knew how to do a few moves and inhale smoke. I actually remember watching that match and rooting for regal to win. I NEVER liked Goldberg. He was just another hogan. Big and baby face that knew a few moves but when you asked him to go out there and be creative...fail

Regal's story had more depth to it. I'm inclined to believe him to an extent. I think there were some miscommunications as well as Goldberg being out of his element.
Goldberg couldn't hold Regals jock strap. Goldberg couldn't really talk either and had WCW not booked him to b on a huge undefeated streak then he would have been simply above average. Mid card guy at BEST in my book. One of the best matches EVER was regal vs Davey Boy at Halloween havoc 1993 for TV title.
Actually since it's not really about actual combat but entertainment you'd have to rank Goldberg amount the next pro wrestlers...it's about who can draw a crowd not who can execute the best moves in ring....

I don’t side with either because it was a great match! Regal made Goldberg look like a legit wrestler. He didn’t embarrass him, the final product served Goldberg well he came off great. It was Goldbergs best technical match, he was doing counters, scissor locks, and take downs. Definitely find and watch this match online.

One thing is for sure: there wasn't a single person in the audience that night who bought a ticket to see Regal. That is a fact, not a single soul. For once in a long time, WCW was building a star that people were willing to pay to see. Who cares who the better wrestler was, it's a business. The fact that Regal couldn't grasp that, shows his ineptness. Clearly he knew Goldberg's wrestling skills were limited and he couldn't keep up with what he was doing that night, I'm no Goldberg fan, thought he was lame and had annoying looking facial expressions, but your job was to take his limited skills and make him shine. That's what a worker does.
Regal is a Great worker, and it should've showed Bill wasn't ready to be a top guy.

I LEGIT love that match, and I am a huge Regal fan. What an amazing heel. It's a shame he was shelved as a jobber because he was technically sound, and the crowd legit hated him. So underworked for such an amazing wrestler. I really wasn't a goldberg fan until he started dismantling the NWO dildos that wanted to ruin every match. This is another Alex Wright vs Paul Roma match. While I can believe that they were told to have a competitive match, the powers that be were asking for a "Goldberg mostly dominates, but Regal gets in some sneaky offense through experience and cheating." Right from the get-go Regal was the guy who got in most of the offense. Goldberg was obviously confused and didn't know what to do.
The most telling thing was when Goldberg was trying to whip Regal and he just stopped and gave him a shoulder block right away. He went into business for himself and it was pretty unprofessional.

Goldberg has never been known to do long matches. They man looks good, has a presence, and they package it. Put him in a long match with talented wrestlers and he falls flat, got no legs, no stamina.

Regal is old school and a great mat wrestler. I just watched the match 30 seconds ago and Regal makes Goldberg look good because he's having to face a guy that can really wrestle and we saw some moves that Bill hadn't used before. It's really a good shoot-style match amidst a sea of squashes, which Goldberg was used to.
There are parts in the match where Regal was putting himself into holds. He wrapped Goldberg's arm around his own head so it looked like Goldberg was putting on a headlock. Goldberg couldn't hang in this style of a match. However, Regal was pretty messed up on drugs at the time, I get the feeling he didn't know much about Goldberg's moveset or style. Regal was giving Goldberg opportunities but they weren't ones that he knew how to take advantage of because he hadn't had enough training.
Regal was great at mixing styles together. He had amazing matches with guys like Rey Mysterio and Ultimo Dragon. He had some great brawling style matches as well. To me it looks as if he didn't know much of Goldberg's style, so he used his technical moves and gave Goldberg openings. If he had a better idea of Goldberg's moveset (a lot of kicks, a few MMA style holds) the match would have flowed better. Regal sounds like he is trying to protect himself a bit, at the time he was in denial that the drugs were messing with his in ring work. Goldberg is unwilling to admit that he wasn't a great wrestler.

William Regal was midcard at best and even Eric Bischoff has stated that there was no way they wanted William Regal to have a competitive match with Bill Goldberg. Yea right bill what a cry baby. U can see regal telling goldberg to do shit. I dont even think it was that bad of a match. All you could do were squash matches. I never got the goldberg hype. And i watched the monday night wars and old enough to remember it.
Having watched the match back, I felt like the stiffest part was Goldbergs spear at the end. Some of Regal's uppercuts looked a bit stiff only because Goldberg made noises when he did them. Every move Goldberg did, you can see the second and a half before it where Regal gets into position and Goldberg has to be reminded of what to do next.
Regal is the real deal.....kick Goldberg ass if he chose 2....
Sounds to me Regal did not want to lose his legitimacy to someone green just to be jobbed after 30 seconds. Bill was the victim in ways without knowing, yet not on purpose either. Regal worked with stars like Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks who were tough guys in their days, and Regal graduated from that experience with flying colors and was a legitimate wrestling machine. He knew to put Bill over, but also protected his image too which was also right. They were both right in their respects and the agent responsible should have talked to them both about the match so that no hard feelings would take place. I blame the agent.
Just watched the match for the first time in years, and Goldberg really has nothing to complain about. Regal didn't make him look bad, and Goldberg showed that he's capable of more than a spear. His neck breaker could have actually broken Regal's fucking neck (classic example of Goldberg's dangerous combination of strength and inexperience) but other than that botch, it was a good match. It showed that Goldberg could be tested and still come out on top. There were a few spots where Goldberg appeared to be lost for a second or two, but they weren't too obvious, and could be mistaken as simply being due to Regal's superior grappling.

It started picking up around early '98 with the help of Mike Tyson and a new rating and style. Also Bret's WCW reign was like what 1 month with 2 vacancies. Had it been in '98 or a promising run in WCW at some point he would have drawn.

Same case with Diesel reinventing himself in WCW. And with Steve Austin reinventing himself as Stone Cold. The late 90s were a period of reinventions. And how is Benoit better. He can't cut a promo like Bret who was excellent with those, he didn't have the look, and wasn't as entertaining. He just had his teeth. Eddie Guerrero was always better.

well, regal, as Goldberg admitted, had a lot more experience, and understood how you do things in the business. He sounds very honest, and I think his stiffness with Goldberg was pretty standard. to me it sounds like Goldberg is kind of sour about having to take some extra punishment on account of being so green. not a criticism against him, but that's definitely what it is.

After carefully watching the match several times, I believe Regal. There were multiple times where Regal put on a move and seemed to wait before changing what he was doing. In the meantime Goldberg wasn't doing anything.
Yeah, except there's a bunch of times that Goldberg DID try something and Regal kept shutting it down. Almost no where in the match did Regal go with any of Goldberg's offers. Which isn't cool. It's supposed to be give and take in there. Up until the spear, Regal sandbagged anything Goldberg tried.
They're probably both lying a little, but both being somewhat honest. Regal did say he was on drugs at this time. I'm sure they wanted Regal, who's a respected old school British style wrestling craftsman, to put up a fight, but he may have gone a little further than they wanted or expected. But Goldberg was green and never very skilled beyond the power moves, so I could see him being unsure how to counter it all and feeling a bit slighted. But to be honest, to even complain about it outside the locker room (really it's just between them) feels a bit petty.

After watching the match, I believe Regal. Goldberg's moveset is designed for a 90 second match. Guys like Regal and Bret Hart can wrestle almost anyone and put on a 5 star match but all Goldberg was familiar with was squash matches that made him look good. You can see in the match that Regal tried to work with Goldberg. Goldberg was most likely clueless because he always led in his squash matches. The agent goofed because he didn't communicate things properly to Goldberg and kept his head down when Bischoff was angry about what happened. No one communicated and that was the problem.
