It's heartbreaking our youth are taking their lives because they feel as though there's no way out. I hate to hear that you felt safer on the streets because of the trauma you experienced. Well done for taking this hardship and using it to help others, I wish I had guidance from someone like you when I was a teen. Aaron Hendry - This is going to have such a positive impact on so many, you're an absolute legend. Mars Cook - I appreciate you mentioning that you're autistic. Not having a routine causes so much emotional distress and being homeless is unpredictable. Plus, being admitted to psychiatric wards only adds to the trauma. It's amazing you've come out to share your very personal stories, it honestly made me cry because it's so relatable. Hoping life gets easier for you soon. Kia Kaha.

This was me at that age, as a girls on the streets was dangerous and so sad. I thought NZ had changed. I remember you cant go to WINZ youre too young not legally able to get a full time job. We take better care of adults. I didnt act out I didnt hurt anyone I just had a crazy selfish mum. I always wanted an education and when I first applied to Uni without any high school quals they laughed at me and did not care what my horrid upbringing was. I have a Masters now and had to go to Australia to earn enough to buy a house by myself. Now my mum who abused neglected starved beat me, who let other abuse me is dependent on me and I have to take care of her.
You have your Masters! What an amazing accomplishment after being on the streets. Love to hear success stories. However, I'm sorry you have to be your mother's caregiver, that would be a tough situation.
My goodness you guys have been through the mill - the state of our foster care system is really bad if rangitahi are choosing either to live on the street or to suicide rather than stay in that system. It;s so wonderful that you both are able to talk about this with such clarity, much older and wiser than your years... I 'm sure you will know about VOICE - that survivors advocate group that hopefully the Royal Commission into Abuse in care recommendations will support in having a significant role in making changes to that foster care system. Weeding out some of the long term public servants that have been perpetrating and hiding the abuse has got to be vital to change. The only thing I would say to you both is that as a child who is abused was never your choice or your responsibility - and rangitahi do the best they can to survive those things, the acting out as much a cry for help as anything. As Mars said, the responses to those traumatic events would not have happened if you hadn't experienced what you did. That you have survived all you have been through is mammoth. And whilst yes part of the answer is to address homelessness, more of the answer is to dismantle an abusive care system which traumatises rangitahi. Arohanui to you all.
