Bought a mk1 Citroen Berlingo 1.6 petrol 2007. I keep getting notes left on my windscreen if want to sell.I paid £2200 for it 6 yrs ago. Been offered a £2500 lots of times. Bought my daughters 2011 yaris 11 yrs ago £5500 just pex it for 2500. Not bad for 11 yrs motoring. My dad was in the motor trade and he told me never to waste money on cars, they are depreciating assets and motoring is not enjoyable in this country any more. Just saying. Also all over media how insurance has gone mad

I never understand why people spend the cost of a mortgage on what is essentially a driveway ornament. Look at how much time you actually drive your car it equates to, what, 1-3% of your time. Why waste so much on something you use so little?

5 years ago I pushed the boat right out and paid 9k for. 3 year old honda civic from a honda main dealer ,
Yet iv recently seen dealers asking 8k for civics same year as mine ,

I can attest to insurance prices. Colleague of mine had a £150 per annum increase for the exact number of miles as a year before, except with another year NCD
Me? I got stung £360 per annum with another year NCD. Nothing had changed except my car depreciated by another year, I gained another year NCD but made sweet FA difference.
The increase was with changing insurance company as my insurer who I had been with for a couple of years, made an offer that demonstrated that they had no interest in keeping me on.

Very interesting Mr. Betty. I used to go to car auctions in Co. Antrim, (Wilson's). In the 1980's I remember buying an old Renault 5 for £75.00, driving it home to Ballyclare and starting to dung it out. Amazingly the pull out ash tray yielded a wad of paper money. Over £100.00. Don't know how the previous owner, or the drivers etc. at the auction missed it. It was my 'refreshment' fund for a few weeks. Happy days. All the best.

@@johnmunro4952It seems to be related more to the cost of insuring them. A relative in the insurance business tells me they are the single “most stolen” car in London postcodes (with many said to be going to Russia, where the oligarch’s favourite is no longer legally available due sanctions) with the result that the cost of insuring a new one is astronomical. It seems astonishing, but he said £15,000 annual premium, if you can get it at all. At some point in the depreciating value of a Range Rover, the insurance cost will simply not be worth it to the kind of buyer it attracts - eg I might be happy to pay £30000 for 2015 Range Rover, but would baulk at paying £8,000 to insure it (thus paying double for it over 4 years).

In 2017 I bought a Peugeot 108 retail from a garage. It was an ex mobility car, a 2015 year so 18 months old and had 1079 miles. It was unmarked. I paid £5300. It is still worth that figure today with 35,000 miles. Awesome little car that hasn't cost me anything except new rotors and pads and 2 front tyres. Oh, and its free road tax for life.
EDIT, I just saw the same model, same year but with 51,000 miles for sale on a garage forecourt for £6,995. Incredible

For £2k, £3k and £4k as you probably know already. It's a strange time to be a Car Dealer. I did it for years in Uxbridge. This is what happens in a recession anyway - luxury cars fall off a cliff, and people want affordability. And this time we have the car price bubble to make the fall even bigger. Things can get really bad - after the supercar bubble in the late 80s, by the early 90s Jaguar couldnt give their XJ220 away and they sat gathering dust for years. From Wiki: A total of just 275 cars were produced by the time production ended, each with a retail price of £470,000 in 1992. The last of the unsold XJ220s were sold for £127,550 plus VAT in 1997. Could happen again...

@@silamarie4406 Also I believe the second hand market will get worse for ICE cars as battery technology improves and the 2035 ban looms closer. Prices for electric cars are getting more or less similar to petrol or diesel cars, while electric cars are cheaper to run and generally very reliable, electric cars won’t stay road tax free forever, the government pushing the green incentives won’t be upping tax on electric vehicles till last so the people only paying £15 or £30 a year Road tax for there efficient ICE car will see that increase, petrol/diesel prices are only going up. 10 years ago the Nissan leaf appeared with a range of 80 miles real world driving, now we have electric cars averaging 300 miles real world driving, I can only assume by 2035 they’ll be easily doing 500miles and charging quicker than they are now, the government would have made electric cars so appealing as they did when diesel cars arrived on the seen that you’d be mad to stick with your high taxed, expensive fuelled ice car. Sadly once enough people have adopted to the new order your intelligent home car charger or petrol station style charge point will tax you per mile to cover road tax and obviously the lost tax from petrol/diesel so people enjoying charging there electric cars for £0.075p per KWh will have that increase, even if your generating your own electric through solar you have to plug your car in to charge so you’ll be taxed accordingly for how many miles you’ve travelled. In my opinion you’d be mad to buy a new ICE car as the depreciation will be ridiculous and you’ll probably see second hand electric cars holding there price very nicely.

The Range Rover example is especially weak due to c, 90 a day being stolen. mainly in London, the South and Northern Cities. Insurance has jumped up by around £2000 to £3000 above normal levels as a result. Any pre 2016 Diesel will not meet ULEZ /Clean Air Euro 6. So a double whammy. The petrol RR you mentioned will however meet ULEZ. but with high fuel prices will be costly to run..

With that farm area of yours it might pay to be the "Reasonable offers on all Trade-ins considered" Dealer, in your area. Like Geoff Moore did in Irthlingborough years ago.! There's always a punter out there that doesn't mind a few dents that need sorting .
He'd say. "I've got just the motor for you", I would plead poverty, then he "Take it anyway, and pay me when you sell it". Often, he would buy a car back after it was sorted. He once asked if I had a 40 gallon barrel of Alice Blue, as they always seemed to be that colour when they went back.!
He must have made a few clams in his time, as they reckoned his house resembled the Taj Mahal, never saw it myself, but my uncle knew him well. Those were the days, long gone now. I would have loved to aquainted him with your "Moon Mileage" Gem !
