Holy Shit! You still had a working REVOX G-36, 10 years ago? That's amazing! That machine never got used. Those transport control interlocking pushbuttons. They all fail! Mine failed. My G-36 was given to me by my Mentor. He told me those transport pushbuttons would fail. And a few years later. No matter how gentle I was with them. They failed. Just like he said they would. So I'm completely amazed to see a working, REVOX G-36, vacuum tube/valve tape recorder that was still functioning. I'm sure it's not today. I'm sure it's in a landfill now. My had to go to a landfill. About 52 years ago. When those transport control buttons, failed. I thought I could fix them? But no. My mentor was right. He was real good. He was kind of famous. He was so good. He used to work for Bell Laboratories. He used to work for Johns Hopkins University. He was a top engineer. He had some really nice tape recorders. AMPEX, Presto, REVOX,, back in the day. In the late 1960s. When there wasn't anything else. Available in the USA. I would later get all of those myself. And Scully. And 3M. And MCI. Never a student. I had to work on those elsewhere. I didn't want one. They were finicky. You needed to be a Swiss watch repairperson. To work on those. But those REVOX machines. Were great! Never a lick of trouble. Hi Manu The later ones are better. The G36 is very good, but requires a lot of maintenace if used for hifi music. The heads do wear, and the tubes (valves) also can need replacing . The circuit design is better in the later models. All the best Nick
It depends what you mean by "sounds tbe best". The G36 has fantastic valve character to it so very good as a music production effect. It also has spectacularly good microphone preamps. Some of the best mic preamps ever made. However, unfortunately you can't seem to send a monitor of the mic inputs out of the machine without taping.
@@Umiliani You need a phono type plug on one end of the cable or XLR to phono adapter. If the mic has phantom power you will also need a separate unit to supply that but those are not expensive. I think Behinger make them. I have a couple of AKG 451 EB mics from the 70s. Acoustic guitar recorded onto the G36 with those is spectacularly good. If only you could just use the mic preamps but unfortunately you can't route that out without going to tape.
Hello. Thank you for this video. Recently i've go G36 and wondering if i can just pass the signal through the G36 electronic without tape? I was trying to do it yesterday, but no luck. I have output signal from G36 only in recording mode. When the reels are not spinning there is no signal from Cathode Follower Output (A). Thank you for the input
Hi The player was not designed to do that, which I agree is annoying when trying to adjust the input , before recording, and it does not have a Pause control.
this is a great unit thank you for sharing it with us all I had noticed that the tape counter was not moving is that a feathure you can disengage it or was it stuck . thank you again and happy and healthy new year
Hi The tape counter broke, which is very common. The plastic fingers break off. I did manage to find another working one. The belt was still ok. Keep rocking and reeling. nick
ok but this is such an amazing unit and I know from experience that some reel to reels are very noisey and some are silent like this one. enjoy it and thank you for sharing this with us and happy and healthy new year
trouble with these there are no secondary fuses on the power supply there is no bias adjfor lower speed if you switch the input selectors to track transfere and open the level controlsthe vu meters do work on playback
Hi David. Thanks for the information. I am not a great fan of these machines. They do have the valve charm and heavy build, but they do age badly, especially the heads which wear out, and the adjustments, as you say, leave a lot to be desired.

Yes the cathode follower outputs are low impedance output, so ideal to drive connecting cables.
The drop in volume is the two channels cancelling each other out a little.
