  • Here’s a video about what a day looks like as a US FOODS delivery driver. A day with SYSCO, PFG, "Performance Foodservice", McLane, Gordon Food Service, FSA, Shamrock Foods Co, or Nicholas would look pretty similar cases and stops varying but the basics are the same. I wanted to make and post this video for those looking for information on local truck driving with the food service industry. Comment down below with any questions. Enjoy the video!

    I spent 7 years as a delivery driver for Gordon Food Service in Canada and we endured some harsh winters doing this. I'm showing this to people to try to explain the daily grind. Good job!
    My top advice to newer drivers: always plan how to utilize the space in your trailer. Never lift a box twice, unless you have to! If you lift things twice, you essentially double your workload.

    Good video man. Hats off to you for bustin out the stops. This will be my 20th year a Sysco of Central Pa. I think in my 20 years I've gone out 9 times with over 20 stops. Your average stops per day is crazy. I'm not in drop yard so I'm usually in 42' trailer. I avg 15 stops 900 cs/day, usually 45 hrs a week. We r rivals but doing the same hard job. Good luck to u my brother. Never stop learning tips from other drivers to make ur day easier. My tip...get rid of those handcart brakes. My cart is as light as possible. Be safe

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! Ya we have a lot of stops up here, I mostly deliver to a town called Jackson Hole and it’s a tourist trap so there’s restaurants and hotels all over the place no chain accounts so almost everything is mom and pop. So lots of stops and I don’t usually have more than 900 cases. I run into Sysco all the time up here and know all the drivers by name and have their phone numbers haha we all help each other out. Thanks for the tip! I’m already a head of you on that though because that is one of the first things I do if I get a new handcart is take the brakes off, I feel the same way I just like it being as light as possible and those brakes are kind of sketchy anyway haha. Congrats for doing 20 years! Thats impressive! I don’t know if I want to do this for 20 years. You stay safe also.

    Man this video is so good! It’s such an uncut version of what to expect in the day in the life of a grocery thrower! Ha! Great job! Much respect!
    I’m 5 months into my first CDL job and I do beverage for Pepsi out in Milwaukee, WI. I also have an offer letter at the moment from US Foods starting at $29.04 n hr. I’m so perplexed on what to do! Should I take it? Should I leave it.
    I’m making $19.25 per hr currently, but it’s base pay plus commission per case delivered once you get to running your own route. Our start time is between 5am and 6am the latest. So a 12 hour day is about 5:30pm - 6:00pm.
    How’s the money? Is it worth it? Do you get commission per case or is it straight hourly? At Pepsi we also are guaranteed pay for the entire day as long as we punch in for at least 1 hour. Regardless if we work a full 8 hour day or not.
    I usually work like 45-55 hrs a week consistently. I’m considered “slow” 😆 as most guys are usually done with their route around 2-3pm the latest.
    The highest I have seen is about $1200 after taxes thus far. That’s with delivering like 400- 600 cases. Is it worth the jump or should I wait it out and try Hazmat fuel hauling or LTL or something.
    I’m also auto restricted so I feel like LTL would want me to driver manual and I have no interest lol! Thank you man! Much respect again!

      The money is good but you will earn every penny of it. If you work around 55 hours a week for US FOODS you would make around $100,000 a year. If you broke down your pay from Pepsi including your commission and everything what do you think you make an hour there?

      I’ve had up to 32 stops and 1100 cases on a 36 foot trailer. The area I used to deliver too was a tourist town so there was tons of mom and pop restaurants really close together. I hated having so many stops, it was always a lot of digging and trying to stay organized. Sometime I’d have 10-15 stops all in the same pallet. I’ve quit US Foods since making this video and now work for Old Dominion doing LTL freight. I’m glad I made the switch!

  • @shawng4886

    This is probably the best video on food service I’ve seen!
    I used to work for Reinhart(now Performance) but I was a box truck driver(trying to get my CDL) and those fuckers had me in a 20 ft box truck having to move 250-500 cases a day.
    Needless to say, the word nightmare was a delicate way to describe how my loads were…. I had NO room in the back of that truck to do anything and my pallets were fucked….
    I started as a van driver for 6 months then moved into a box truck for 2 years. That job and company was BY FAR the worst 2 1/2 years of my life! All just trying to get my CDL man…. After all that time, they still wouldn’t give me a shot so I left.
    I went into beer delivery and it’s been almost 6 months. I got my Class A finally with this company! But… I’m on the fence whether I want to stay or go elsewhere… the money isn’t bad, but man, having to not only merchandise the product but also deal with 150-180 lbs kegs going into basements and TINY ass coolers fucking SUCKS! And some places have traps you have to use…. Requires two peoples and you basically have to catch the barrels when the other person sends them down…. It’s fucking crazy! Then… if you’re not careful… smashing your fingers in-between those barrels while moving them is HORRIBLY painful!
    I will say if there’s ONE thing I miss about food service… it was just dropping the shit and leaving. I have Kwik Trips on some of my routes with beer and sometimes they get over a 100 cases and I have to merchandise all of it…
    I need 6-12 months of experience to get into no-touch freight and I’m debating on getting back into food service for that experience and then moving on….

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  2 роки тому

      That was nice about food was just dropping your loads in the walk in or dry room. I’m not with US Foods anymore. I’m with Old Dominion doing LTL freight now a lot easier on your body and pretty much everything comes off on pallets

      @shawng4886 2 роки тому

      @@LuthiRanchWY would you recommend US Foods? How often were your loads bad? I applied to US Foods local to me yesterday. They’re currently paying more than I’m making with beer and they have a $15k signing bonus right now… which tells me that they’re probably desperate for help and it’s not the most fun place to work right now… but if it’s between merchandising(really kissing ass) accounts or breaking down pallets of food, I think I’d rather break down pallets of food… considering with beer, we still have to break down the pallets at the accounts to take them in, have them checked in, and then merch them…🤦🏻‍♂️

      So I know every division across the nation is different but top pay out of our division in Utah is $27hr and if you work an average of 55 hours a week, which is very realistic, you’d make around $85,000 a year. When we are running super hard in the summer and getting 60-70 hours a week I’ll gross over $2,000 a week. It’s not easy money though you’ll work for every penny of it. But I’d say you could expect to make $65,000-$90,000 a year just depends on how many hours you want to work and if you want a life outside of work haha. If you wanted to work 65 hours every week you’d make $100,000+ a year on top of great benefits.
