I love her "Four Last Songs," but as Salome, she sounds oceans away from the 16 year old that Strauss wanted. Welitsch's 1944 recording of the scene is unmatched. Right up there are also Ceborati and Behrens, who both bring out the youthfulness of the character. Most others sound too matronly.

She always gives me the impression of being a hair under the pitch on the high notes here. I love her though, but I prefer Birgit Nilsson's singing, and Teresa Stratas' acting.

LOL I was about to comment that she gave the impression of being slightly sharp lol I have a bit of a tin ear though, btw I am on a Salome spiral right now, and I tell you, maria ewings acting is hair raising, and christel goltz singing is overwhelming, check them out, they would make another perfect salome together

+Der Fremde One cannot agree or disagree about a singer singing flat - either one hears it or not. Not hearing it doesn't make it go away. Norman was mostly flat.You obviously just dont hear it

I don’t think Jessye could do demented very well…. she was better suited to regal, legendary figures such as Sieglinde or Ariadne. another role she tried but didn’t fit her was Santuzza.
