oh my god, yes! i wanted to share the same feeling. i was diagnosed with PCOS since i was 11 years old and i have been on and off birth control, metformin and seeing endocrinologist for as long as i can fucking remember (i’m 27 year old now) and my eating habits are not so great and losing weight is difficult. i was even prescribed ozempic by my most recent endocrinologist… i tried it for about a month and it wasn’t for me. i fought so hard not to continue taking it. and with not so great eating habits; thinking about numbers makes so nervous and anxious to even think about so it is hard and feels very lonely. i am glad more people are speaking up about it!! ❤

There’s a big difference between celebrity doctors and normal doctors. Celebrity doctors are expensive because they expect that you can advocate for yourself and they will give you whatever it is you want. If you’ve got money, and bring that money into a doctor patient situation, the doctor patient relationship is different. QT is unfortunately someone with a lot of medical anxiety and isn’t able to effectively advocate for herself in medical situations, and she walked into the complete wrong type of doctor for herself. She can complain to the medical board if she wants, but nothing will come of it.
Not that it matters because she has found the right gyno for herself now, but in future, if QT wants to use celebrity doctors, her assistant should be arranging the visits and providing clear information to the doctor about QT’s needs. That’s where celebrity doctors excel, at delivering on the specific requests of their patients.

    • @t-o-m-m
      @t-o-m-m 20 днів тому +14

@@samfuel She didn't have specific requests, though, and they pressured her into treatments regardless.
Not to mention they told her information that is false then recommended and tried to book her in for an (unnecessary, anyway) operation based on a scan that the other doctor showed literally couldn't lead to the diagnosis that they used as justification for the operation.
Qt mentioned that the Dr kept mentioning irregular periods even though she corrected her multiple times, so clearly advocation for yourself is being ignored.
The doctor is medically negligent, so it does matter even though qt has found a good alternative gyno, if nothing comes from reporting it that doesn't mean that's correct.

Idk who that person is saying that "celebrity" doctors are held to a different standard but that is just not true. All physicians in a state have to have their states licensing in order to practice and there absolutely is a standard of care and standard of ethics that must be met with every patient.
Reporting your concerns to your states medical board is your right. Patients are also never expected to be knowledgeable on health care, yes you advocate for yourself by describing your symptoms and knowing your right to refuse treatment whenever, but you are not expected to know more than the average patient no matter where you go.
Doctors that work with celebrities are so expensive because if they don't take insurance, they can charge as much as they want for a procedure. Insurance companies do a lot in terms of regulating health care costs because they force physicians to keep their prices at a minimum, but they also allow the majority of the population to be able to access those physicians services so its sort of a give and take.
Source: I work in healthcare, report your concerns to your states medical board and possibly any associations they are part of (like the gynecology association). The doc sounds like she's breaking a ton of ethical codes/legal standards and is exploiting patients.

51:49 @ Maya ‘s point about heritable cancer: My profession is a genetic counselor, this stuff is our bread and butter!! Everyone has genes called tumor suppressor genes (TSG), they work to stop and kill mutant cells before they turn into cancer. When we grow older, our cells start to make mistakes and once both copies of a TSG in a cell are working improperly, that cell will become cancerous.
Some people are born with a germline variant (or error) in one copy of a TSG. Germline means that variant is in every cell in your body. So every cell already has one non-functioning copy of a TSG. It then only needs to have one error (a second hit) to become cancer. This means the person is pre-disposed to cancer, and that variant can be passed onto their children.
BRCA1 & BRCA2 are the most well known TSGs because of how severe the increases in cancer risk are. There are many other TSGs that can be defective, with varying levels of severity.
Re:Maya’s mom’s testing being ‘outdated’, when we first started doing this genetic testing, we only knew of a few certain types of variants that could cause disease, so that’s the only thing we tested for. Since then, research and testing methodologies have evolved and advanced to test many new types of variants. Without getting into too many details, BRCA1/2 had a revolution in how we tested for them in 2006, and then again 2012. So if Maya’s mom had testing a long time ago, scientists could only test for what we knew to test for at that time. That’s why updated testing would be recommended. However, because Maya’s mom is the one who had cancer, she’s the best person to test first to determine if she has a hereditary form of breast cancer. Maya, you can get testing if you want, but there are definitely many pros & cons for you to consider. Definitely avoid 23&Me BS!!! Consider having your mom and/or yourself meet with a genetic counselor to discuss what they think and what they might recommend!!!!!
ALWAYS CONSULT A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL BEFORE MAKING ANY DECISIONS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH! And if it’s anything related to genetics, please go see a GENETICS professional (many doctors and others healthcare professionals who don’t work in/with genetics regularly have no clue what they are talking about)!
    Sincerely,
Just a fan who happens be a genetic counselor working in genetics and knows weirdly specific things about this specific topic.

Yeah, I was diagnosed w PCOS at the beginning of this year. (28 year old girlie pop).
I couldn’t lose weight for the life of me. No matter what I did.
Metformin was the only thing that helped my body use the insulin properly, which in turn helped me lose some weight.
Also, “I don’t even know if I want kids, I just want the choice” is SO real qt.
I am right there with you on that.
Also, I had every single type of blood work imaginable to figure out what my hormonal issues were. I spent about 5 months back and forth visiting my Primary care doctor to rule out every single hormonal thing possible.
They tested me for Cushing’s which is something that can mimic pcos.
But luckily my issue was PCOS , with insulin resistance.
I say luckily because although it’s not lucky to have pcos by any means, something like Cushing’s is even more complicated in my opinion at least.

I've more recently developed tight muscles in my hips and pelvic muscles. Been on some form of birth control since I was 15, when I had my first surgery. Another surgery in '22. I'm about to have a hysterectomy this month. I'm over it. I've basically lost 20 years of my life to pain. No kids. But it is what it is. We can adopt if we decide to. Endometriosis runs in my family. A lot of women in my family have had hysterectomies.
I've been on progesterone only shot since '22 and it stopped my periods which is awesome. I still have other symptoms, but omg I love not bleeding on my period. I never want to go back. So that's an exciting thing about the hysterectomy.

In med school I rotated with a gynecologist and he always made it a point to do 2 things in every visit: first explain that he is not there to tell the patient "no" but rather to explain options and then proceed with what the patient desires, and second he walks through everything with the patient to make sure they are on the same page at every stage of the process during examination. His patients loved him largely because of the respect and autonomy he gave his patients. Too many other gynecologists make visits far too routine and lose the humanity of medicine.
Thank you for using your platform to explain a process that 50% of the population experiences and the other 50% knows little about!
First doctor was straight-up scamming you or was otherwise incompetent. Second doctor was much more holistic and focused on you, rather than just your symptoms. I am happy you found someone who cares about you.

I think you guys should pick two different but complimentary color schemes and make it feel more cohesive. Maybe having similar curtains and background objects that both fit the individual aesthetic but also give visual balance by subtly mirroring or including some of those items in both (for example having a throw blanket or sheer curtain in both color schemes but placing it differently in each space. Or, having the same type of throw pillow but different vibe in the exact same place in both backgrounds). Some subtle nods and maybe a few more obvious things to make it feel organic and individual but still say “we are in the same space” virtually. I have no clue if that makes any sense I’m too high for this 😅

feel ya on the dentist QT, always get 2nd opinions on major diagnosis. I've had a few root canal's too. Most of the time the worst part is the pain letting you know that the root is infected, treatment is normally just the numbing shot (get multiple shots if needed just speak up about pain) and pressure. Extraction/bonegraph/implants are worse because the compact and healing process.. and cost ofc. Sucks to get treated by dentist but love that there are people who do the care.

as someone who just got diagnosed with PCOS a few weeks ago it's honestly super comforting that we're going through the same things right now. also, the high estrogen and testosterone thing is because PCOS causes something called an "anovulatory" period, meaning an egg doesn't drop for us when it's supposed to, and because of that our hormone cycles are thrown off and we continue to mass produce estrogen. Our bodies freak out and start converting it to testosterone to try to restore the balance, but it causes an excess of both and they don't really cancel each other out in the way we think they might. This causes all sorts of downstream effects like excess body hair, acne, weight gain/retention, and irregular periods.

Id recommend using sites like the NHS to sanity check doctors. (On PCOS for example, they first and foremost recommend dietary changes, then target more serious symptoms with specific medications depending on how its presenting in you.)
Obviously a website has its limits, but they dont have the same incentive to lie, and it can give you a basic outline of what to expect. If a doctor goes way off track, then you have a vaguely informed idea to recognise that, and know to get second and third opinions.

I totally relate to your dentist experience Maya. I live in the UK, and 2 different partially NHS funded dentists ruined my teeth. I didn't look after them properly... as a student it was the last thing I cared about, I thought my teeth were fine, then one broke suddenly, and following that I had YEARS of treatments. One dentist didn't clean where I had a cavity properly, and just put filling over the top... it rotted under there without me noticing (no smell or anything), until it suddenly hurt worse than anything I've ever felt before. I moved town for work, and had to get a private dentist (the same thing as American dentists), and they looked tried to save it but couldn't. I lose the tooth (thankfully a molar at least). I have the same issue on the other side of my mouth, and I'm awaiting a root canal. Other dentists I've had have done multiple root canals on the same tooth and it still be painful afterwards. I had an emergency dental appointment at a dental hospital once and a student dentists performed a root canal without numbing me!
So yep, I do not like the dentists either haha. Apologies for the rambling :')

ETD: I also have moderate health anxiety where it’s impossible for me to make an appointment to get anything checked because I’m scared it’s going to be news that I’m dying. My papas cancer diagnosis and death shortly thereafter was the straw that broke the camels back for my health anxiety to reach a new high. I find it best to record the appointments and then if it’s triggering I delete the recording.

This whole story is so horrifying and makes me think all over again of a thought of I've had in the past - some people are just bad at their jobs. And people being bad at their jobs can inconvenience you in various ways, like sometimes you get a shitty sandwich. Or sometimes the mechanic makes your car worse and it costs you a bunch of money. Or sometimes, the person who's bad at their job can be a fucking doctor, or dentist, or lawyer, and them being bad at their job can literally fuck up your whole life, forever.

Some non fun fact of Endometriosis: when it comes to endometriosis on average it takes (from what i remember when doing my thesis on that) 7 - 14 years to get a diagnosis , symptoms of it are essentially menstrual pain and or pelvis pain. Witch by it self is very hard to track since it comes from pretty much anything included but not limited to : endometriosis to menstrual cramps, trauma, or
    physical activity
The golden standard while it is: through laparoscopy. However, that is normally the last step. Normally, if you suspect it, you take a very careful look at relevant patient history, do a physical examination etc and lastly when you do suspect it, laparoscopy.
A very basic ultrasound is sus, and then say pay 12k lol.

i need to comment bc i have similar hormonal issues and let me tell you about insulin resistance and starvation it does NOT work. the only reason i was obese was because i starved myself and the way my nutritionist explained it was the body goes into emergency mode, feeling the stress of an improper diet and lack of nutrients from forgoing meals and just HOARDS whatever is thrown at it in hopes of survival!
that's when i was put on a 2,000 calorie diet, six meals a day. it was horrible bc i was used to eating one meal a day or two and it screwed up my mental health bc i had developed some really unhealthy relationships with food.
after doing that consistently, i lost so much weight (which had never happened to me) and my 40+ days periods went down drastically. i still struggle because i truly lack discipline w food intake and other health issues but if anyone reads this, and has a trouble with their uterus/digestive system i beg you all to eat at the very least three meals.

I'm gonna sound like such a hater but...
    - Old editing were better, some of the cuts/camera switches just feel so unnecessary and out of place. It kinda disrupts the flow, doesn't add anything. Wish it was showing both of them at all times except for some comedic timing. The constant close up and switches makes it awkward for me
-Maya's lighting and overall quality definitely is better.
    - Thumbnail is kinda tacky, I don't think the bandaids and scars help.. I think this is an ongoing issue cause I think they changed the halloween episode's title and thumbnail like 5 times when it was up.
I love the podcast, I will continue to support just sharing some opinions.
