They got the mexican family down tho. All the slang and Spanish conversations they had were so natural and organic. Not like when they try to make Spanglish sound unnatural
I’m feeling the opposite. It was a basic superhero movie. As a Mexican American man, I appreciated seeing representation on the screen. The family scenes really resonated with me. For that alone I give it a good score, but I’m biased and can fully admit that lol
Meh it's trash nd very anti American nothing wrong with representation if it's on good will but the director is also a pos it don't help
Dude I'm the whitest dude from the east coast and the family dynamics really sold this one for me. I'd rewatch this before many marvel movies. This film is going to end up a classic for me
I don't think they ever give a high score to any super hero movie. It's just not their thing which I don't fault them for. At least they give honest good faith reviews and don't just hate movies for political reactionary reasons like many other UA-cam media "critics" do.
@@edwinv196Because Superhero movies are almost always terrible except for the CGI
I would have been really excited to see this if Sharon was in it. I think I'm just over pg-13 comic book films and i wish they'd really go there with an idea.
Thanks!
Thank you!
On the opposite side on this one. The movie felt very relatable. There’s a unique family dynamic that never been done in a comic book movie.
Family dynamic is cool but the characters are annoying
Y’all are doing some hustling ❤😊
My birthday ‼️🤙🏽
So you’re telling me that after all the inclusion propaganda and Latin celebrities talking about Latinos should have better roles than the thugs and maids the first Latino super hero is A MAID?! 😩
I didn’t even think of that 🤦🏽♂️
I think it was actually intentional to show jobs can be harder ti find for people of color but he is a pretty law school graduate
I've yet to see this and unsure if I will in theaters (maybe I'll see it on cinema day this Sunday for 4 bucks) so you may be spot on with your critique, Joseph. But I think we need to be careful whenever we critique how minorities are portrayed in film. No I don't want stereotypes but I don't want model minorities either. Plenty of shows and movies featuring white people having low end jobs and money troubles and other flaws. We should have the privilege of being represented as flawed ordinary people too.
I think it was supposed to be a commentary about how people with degrees hardly ever get to work in the field they have a degree in.
😅
Love listening to my favorite channel in the mornings! It always makes me have a great day afterwards 🥳
Joseph I have to agree with you about how the family members were basically stereotypical caricatures. Besides that severe flaw I enjoyed this movie. Susan Sarandon was splendid playing the villian. I also liked the afterlife scene and the backstory and redemption of the henchman working for Sarandon's character.
Nick’s blue steel when Joseph was about to describe the family 😂
Nick and Joseph, I have talked with you fellas before. I write a movie column in our newspaper here in Virginia. How do you go about finding a way to get invited to films before the release? It's something I've always wondered about. It would be extremely helpful for me in my line of work. If you have any pointers, I'd be interested in hearing them.
Thank you guys, as always you guys are hilariously entertaining and you do a fantastic job!
If you find out who is releasing the film, you can reach out to their PR team. That information is usually listed on their website. The smaller distribution houses seem to be more generous when starting out.
Thanks for the tip guys
I did my research... There are also a yellow and green beetle who fight the blue bettle until they realize he is not in cahoots with the evil organization and if made they will team up against the black beetle.....I think they should have made a more grounded less CGI laden film and just had all the beetles together. Maybe at the end they could have Paul McCartney sing an outro😂😂😂😂. Have a good one.
I just watched it and i loveeeed it so much. I can see why ya'll didn't like it but idk I still loved it. Also I know a lot of college grads that act like Jaime so I thought he was relatable.
i loved it too idc
I loved it it’s really good one of my favorite dc films
I just watched this last night, and I totally agree with all you said, Joseph, about the family and how the characters were portrayed. I was so excited to see a Latino superhero, but I too found his character annoying and not very "super." I wanted him to be more of a badass like the grandma. (Side note though, there's no way in hell my grandma would have left the house in her house dress like that grandma did) I too worried that people would be laughing at the family more than laughing with them. I too wanted it to feel like a more proud representation of the family. I try to see that it was a fun family-type movie not to be taken too seriously, but I guess I kinda hoped for more.
24:08 it wasn't flushed out, but there's a scene where Jaime and his sister is sitting on the roof of their house, talking and drinking a beer. The scene in the mansion is supposed to be a call back to that. But they did such a bad job of flushing that characteristic out that most people glance over it.
Nick, I loved your pull quote!
I am so tired of comic book superhero movies!!!!!
This movie gave me green lantern vibes. To be honest, when I saw the trailer, it looked like a paramount + kids tv show.
The movie was originally meant to be an HBO Max exclusive, which explains the cheap tv show aspect of it.
I'm easily entertained so I loved this movie and as a black South African woman, I found the Mexican family dynamic pretty relatable.
Not surprised it's a 2/5. It's a movie to sell toys.
Dont feel bad Joseph... I didnt know this wasnt a Marvel movie until you said it.. 🤷🏿♀️ 😂
It's not. It's DC
Sounds like this could’ve been a great film…if Nick wrote the screenplay with Joseph collaborating on story ideas! Why, oh why, is this the case with so many movies ‘we discuss’ here on FishJelly?? There has to be better writers out here that have vision & can write an enticing & exciting & thoughtful screenplay, no? There just HAS to be…
Thanx, boys!!!💜💜💜
I really wanted to like this movie but it felt so rushed. The best part was the family but they did not spend nearly enough time getting us invested in their characters. Although this was marketed as a family movie it just felt like something we’ve seen time and time again. However XOLO is a star and hopefully they can do better in the next movie ⭐️
Not an extension to your chrome book 😂 I actually enjoyed this movie. It felt so nostalgic and the family dynamic was so familiar.
I was gonna go see this if yall liked it but sad to hear it was terrible. I love representation in movies so I was hoping this would be good. I will be waiting to watch it at home. Love your reviews and you guys.
It wasn’t terrible
Definitely give it a watch! The movie's blend of music references, nods to soap operas (including María la del Barrio 😊), and its portrayal of the challenges faced by the ethnic group, all leading up to the introduction of a Mexican superhero, make for an entertaining and engaging experience.
So this movie has nothing to do with the Beetle Bailey comics after all.
I'd say it has some of the most comic accurate costumes in a superhero movie ever. Can't comment on the plot though.
I really enjoyed this movie. It was so funny and it had me smiling all through out the film. I loved it!❤
awww too bad hearing you didn't like the film !! I actually completely disagree. I enjoyed the film a lot and thought it was very well written and funny
I agree! It had the super hero cliches, but it was definitely a fun watch! 😊
Thanks Much !.......
It was good. I enjoyed myself
Yeah I thought it was good
Thank s guys - I had some doubts about this film and this review has helped me make up my mind. I'll wait to see this one at home. Joseph, I also thought this was a lesser known Marvel character too. I thought Disney was beginning to "scrape the bottom of the creative source barrel".😅
I think the movie is good and definitely more relatable for Latinos
A good portion of it is in Spanish
@@shippendales8543 the balance is ass tbh if they wanted profit
I agree with the comments regarding the family, they are portrayed a little cringy a little stereotype and while people around me were laughing it felt a little minstrel show type laughing
How could anyone hate this review? I loved it!!!!
I really liked this movie my kids did too
box office sure does.
Sasha Calle is from Colombia and played Supergirl in The Flash
I wanted to go see Bottoms today but my schedule changed around and I saw this instead. I thought the first 20 minutes or so was very strong and I was surprised you didn't like it, but then it turned out to be so dumb. Also, when I saw Becky G's name in the credits, I couldn't piece it together at all who her character was until I turned my phone on.. was genuinely perplexed loll. Seems like a waste of her talent and film's money although maybe she helped promote it.
another pointless superhero movie. What story needed to be told here?
It looks too much like Star Kid and Guyver.
Also, "They have a super powered Latino. For the villains to win, they need their own super powered Latino." 🤣
“tell Jenny it’s her dad, ted kord” is the dumbest line I’ve ever heard. Like I think the daughter would know who it is…
Dan Garrett is the original Blue Beetle.
Dad's cousin would be 1st cousin, once removed.
Having seen the trailer in the theater a couple times and never judging a book by it's cover your detailed review speaks of a well-meaning premise and core representation. Yet, it confirms to me the movie is a jumbled hot mess. Moreover, can't believe it will eclipse Billion Dollar Barbie in this week's ticket sales.
This looks like some nonsense 🤦♀️😬
Wondering if ya seen and will review the film “brother” it premiered at tiff last year and won Lamar the best actor Canadian equivalent to the Oscar. Most often than not I disagree with ya review, but I like ya together. Joseph is such a character I laugh every time he says “button”. And nick loves that crazy man. Though not enough to know Spanish. What’s up with that. Jaja so hope ya hit the button on the film brother.
Sorry, it was actually the mom who said, Partele la Madre
Wow, I really appreciate your review….the Dave Chappelle comparison to me is spot on ….great review….I was shocked about the film and I hope James Gunn improve DCU …cause this direction is horrible
Spot on review. Wasted opportunity. So many things to pick on i can't even.👎🏾
Another flop for Warner Bros ...
I hated the "luxury dump" line.
I found it realistic. Sometimes you want to use the nicest bathroom available after a day of hard work
Weird Science! Thanks.!
I see your Sigourney Weaver & Shang Chi and I raise you my Susan Sarandon and Blue Beetle (if this was yu gi oh) cuz that movie was soo good!
I was like, y'all I hope this does as well as Shang Chi cuz this movie was like the fraternal or whatever sibling of Shang Chi and I loved it as much as I loved Shang Chi!
Imma go watch yalls review of Shang Chi now if you have it up and I hope y'all felt the same way about Shang Chi as yall did this one.
Susan was soo good cuz she sees' these evil people up close so she just showed us who they are!
I loved this in the 4dx!
I will say though, I've never seen cobra Kai but, I was like, this is the young version of Raj, from the big bang theory, and, I loved that!
Okay, love you guys and thanks for the review!
🩷
Hey y'all
🎉💯🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Xolo's so cute but...this is a live-action DC movie so...😗
🤣Nick is pretty close to what you said too..*and* "vaporized" - now that's fitting for most pesky insects - 😅Joseph feeling 'disorientated' by the location itself - I'd be impatient too I think, and not with anticipation for the Blue Beetle !😉😊
So glad to hear they didn’t like it. Saw the film yesterday, every reviewers love it. I’m the only one who didn’t like the movie
I bet they give it 3.5
You would lose that bet
@@perforce1that’s what I love about these productions… never know how it will go… only reviewers that matter. This looks like iron man with a teen … like Shazam was Superman with a teen… the movie Big meets super heroes… it’s gotta be about something more than super powers… like guardians of the Galaxy.
@darkwingduck3477 I was kind of gauging on a couple print reviews I read. I didn’t think the trailer was very good…I guess I was being optimistic. I would watch this show if they reviewed old phone books.
Completely disagree
This movie was not good. Two thumbs down
