This is an amazing set of interviews and its great to see these "easter eggs"! I'm definitely going to see WICKED just for these awesome touches!! Your expertise and interviews are the best!
One of the most in-depth and striking interviews I seen yet and I have watched dozens of them over the past several weeks. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman revealing talks of a "Wicked" expansion is literal bombshell!
Ryan, thank you for being the FIRST podcaster/vlogger to mention the fact that in the eighty-four years since _The Wizard of Oz_ was released in 1939, _Wicked_ is the very first Oz film to be made with the full reign to use the iconography from the MGM film! In addition to the legal negotiations for what shades of green could Disney was permitted to use for _Oz the Great and Powerful_ without risking a lawsuit. In discussing this on other video comments, I also often cited _Return to Oz_ and the exorbitant amount of money they had to pay for the ruby slippers, which amounted to less than a minute of screentime. It's sad that some hardcore _Wicked_ enthusiasts are complaining about the fact that Glinda's costumes are much more reminiscent of Billie Burke in the 1939 original. Thus, I think mentioning the design for the Broadway show would likely have been much more faithful to the iconic looks so associated with the original film had they been blessed with the full approval of whomever owns the IP rights.
Thank you so much for this video as well as all your Oz videos! My brother and I were huge fans of Oz, and a little before he passed 14 years ago, he said he was going to be going Over The Rainbow soon. Seeing that there is that musical cue in the musical hits me so deeply. Tomorrow night I’m going to be a crying mess going with my daughter (who saw the musical twice on Broadway and also a lifelong Oz fan!). I never knew how incredible the Oz fan community is until this movie. I may have found a new bunch of friends I have yet to meet!
That is so touching. Thank you for sharing and I know your brother will be with you in spirit while viewing WICKED!! Enjoy the film and hope to meet someday at an Oz event!
No big spoilers but trust me when I tell you that there is plenty of material for the second half. Without giving away too much, the original story of the wizard of oz post tornado comes into play, plus explaining about how the characters end up, ect...there is a lot yet to be unpacked. Thanks for the great review...
An incredible look behind the curtain of WICKED, love finding out about the hidden references in the Wicked score aswell as the costume choices and world building!!!
I wanna spoil it but I won’t. I was beyond floored!!!! There was a particular scene that the whole theatre screamed! Cynthia and Ariana and of course everyone else truly made this theatre kid at heart feel so whole. 17 years ago, I watched the live broadway and it was the first musical I’ve ever seen. This film, the music, the production will always be apart of my life and shaped me who I am today. I’m glad I am alive to have watched this film tonight.
This was filmed in the Sky/Elstree studios wasn't it? I love that you asked about the green make up lol When she said they started from scratch, they eventually found a mix of lots of different colours to get the green they liked. Unfortunately they didn't make a large batch of it, so they had to mix it each day, but they were never quite able to get the exact same shade. It was noticeable in the continuity shots that she was a different colour, and so it all had to be fixed by CGI in the edit and thats partly why she looks so flawlwss throughout the film.
@@RyanJayReviews Direct from one of the film's production managers. If you heard some of the things that went on during production... screaming arguments, contract disputes, getting it written into contract that if 1 witch had something, the other must have it as well, regardless of it being needed.... You know how all the stories of the munchkins came out after the original film, someone could write a similar book based on this!
@@RyanJayReviews whether the movie changed things for the better is all based on people’s personal opinion But no one can deny that it has changed for good
It's in the trailer; and you literally clicked on a video about revealing secrets - like, don't watching a video about secrets and then complain you learned the secrets. But thank you for watching!
Ryan, what a cerebral talent you are! Your questions are so evocative, introspective and well... wicked awesome!
Wow thank you so much for the kind words!!

Oh cool details. What is your source? I just like to fact check, as an historian.

He didn’t spoil anything, the story has been around for 21 years
