Love all the pockets and the wonderful way you have made so many nooks and crannies to explore. Makes you realise that you don't have to make a 'normal' book layout all the time. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Mim thanks for watching and for your comment. I'm glad you liked the video and I hope you will explore all kinds of book formats, there's always something to learn in this journal/book making world isn't there?
I've been watching Nick the booksmith and was trying to figure out what exactly a lapbook is. I love this! What a great example! Now I'm thinking of all the lapbook ideas I can come up with! Well done!
Nik is the OG of lap books and watching her first series was what inspired this book. They are so fun to make, even if they do take time, they are always worth it!
This, this, this!!! Is exactly the book I’ve been dreaming of. Love it so much and the story you tell of the books owner. Wonderful, fabulous works. I know you are so proud of your work!!!
Tracie, what a kind comment that really made my day. Every part of making this book was so fun, I followed Nik the Booksmith's series and I was so excited when it was done. It is still one of my most favorite projects! Thanks for watching and for your enthusiasm. Much appreciated!
I know this is an older post but STILL I 100% agree with you! Nik the Booksmith is an amazing artist AND teacher!!! I loved watching this lap book series too from her! Your lap book turned out to be your own work of art!!! Great job!!! Lap books are fascinating to me. They have all the things us journaler's love! Lot's of flips and flaps and tuck spots. A great vintage feel and look and just a really beautiful place to write our thoughts down in. Great job!
wow. that was such a fun story you created with your journal. So Cleaver. I have loved nature for many many (79) year In the midwest, Montana and the big Island of Hawaii. Such good memories. Sure wish I was doing junk journals all that time.
Hi Judie, I too wish I had found Junk Journals earlier in my life, they are a collection of so many things I love. I'm sure your life and travels would make wonderful stories for journals. Thanks for watching!
Wow, thank you! Corinne you made my day with this comment. I am way overdue for a big journal project.... and one is in the works. Hopefully soon I will get it underway. Thanks for the kind words. xo
This is so beautiful! I am in awe of how thoroughly you've geared the naturalist references to the local environment. And the selected patterns play against one another so well. WOW. I am in love with Myrtie and her story-lapbook!
Wow i love this. I didnt even know what a lapbook was. & you just helped me understand what they are & used for 😁 thank you so much for shareing, hope you are well.🌻😁
You're a fabulous engineer, architectural designer and, through your book, storyteller! I can't tell you how much I love this! You must be a naturalist yourself!! The forest is full of stories, clues and pathways that lead us all to becoming spiritual naturalists, if only we take the time. You have clearly taken the time with this lapbook. Between you and Nik I am so hugely inspired to carry on with my The World of a Tree "jj". I know I'll be referring to this video frequently. Thank you for sharing with us. And the length of your video was perfect and thoughtful.
What a kind and thoughtful comment, thank you! I do consider myself a very amateur naturalist and get most of my inspiration outdoors. I love to forage for mushrooms and notice the little details of Nature in each season. Nik was the inspiration for this book and anytime I am mentioned in the same company it is a great honor. I’m intrigued by your world of a tree junk journal and I thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I, too, have been watching Nik's Lap book videos. I want to make one for my best friend, back home in England. She and her husband have taken to walking in and around the woodlands and fields where they live. Actually, it's very close to Robin Hood's famous Sherwood forest! So, when I actually am able to start the book, I will be able to use your book, along with Nik's, to inspire me. Thank you for sharing and telling your little Myrtie story!
What a wonderful idea and I love that Sherwood Forest is so close to where they live. There has to be Oodles of images and ideas that can be adapted to that... I wonder if you could use an old Robin Hood Book as the base? How fun would that be!!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I really like this one. It has given me so many ideas for the one I want to make. I had a set of old encyclopedias and got rid of them. Wish I had kept them.
We always get rid of things that we can use later don't we? Luckily encyclopedias are often thrown out so hopefully you can find a bunch more as they are great for outside boards. Thanks for watching and commenting, good luck!
As a person who is just learning the joys of foraging the forest I really enjoyed this journal. I hope to create my own journal someday and thus one has truly inspired me. Thank you it is absolutely gorgeous.

What a great excuse to buy chocolate bars, I love it. Very innovative. 😊 This is an awesome project. Thanks for sharing. 👍 This gives me an idea of what to do with my 1940s set of encyclopedias.
This is crazy because I’m a mushroom hunter but I also collect feathers, pieces of ferns or wild flowers, and birch bark while I’m out in the woods. Wow Michelle, I am beyond words! This is such a stunning stunning project! I was glued from the start to the the end. Your videos are fantastic and I loved your comment about being engrossed with every episode Nik produced, which was better than Netflix. Your lapbook is brilliant. I can’t find the words to say how blown away I am. Love all the little details. Truly amazing. 💗🌸🦋
Angela, you made my day. What kinds and meaningful words to say to a new youtube who is still trying to find my way. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I thank you for watching and for all your kind comments.
Very nice to see your work thank you for sharing I made one to following Nick's video mine is quite different from yours that's the wonderful thing they can all be so different and so wonderful
This is lovely Michelle! The story is wonderful and the lap book is truly a beauty. Thank you for taking the time to share! I'm going to look up Nick now!
This is such a beautiful creation, so much thought and love went into it. I love that you used mainly old book pages and all the details and I am inspired by all the extra pockets and folders you made additional to the ideas from Nik. Some time ago I made some folders myself and I know how difficult it is to stop adding and keep it all functional 😉 thanks so much for sharing this wonderful piece ❤
It is so hard to stop isn't it? (especially when you have a theme you are working with). I am so inspired by so many people in our community, but I try to put my own twist on it as well.
I absolutely can, my book was inspired by one of the BEST tutorial series I ever watched from Nik The Booksmith. She made a lap book and it is a FREE series on her channel and that tutorial is what inspired me to make my book. If you watch you will see so many things I did came from her ideas and amazing series. I hope you will check it out.
@@MichelleRaeLandry Doing OK---back to the beach soon to help Cherri! So proud to know you--Your posts here and on instagram are so creative & inspire me to do more beach scene paintings this summer!
This is a GREAT take on Nik's lapbook, but you totally made it your own/ or your sister's style, that is actually usable. I finished a binge watching too, tonight for her series, and was greatly inspired. I've saved your video, as I love your tags and some other elements you created. Very nice work :)
I love lap books! I can't wait until I am brave enough to make one of my own. They look so fun to make. I saw Nik the Booksmith make one too. They are so cool! And your lap book is awesome! Thanks for subscribing to my channel!
Absolutely love this. I saw your lap book on Instagram and was hoping you would do a video. This is so amazing. I love all of your ideas. As you kept saying how you had to stop adding, I kept yelling - No, No! Such creative folios and such. I love the back story too.
It is STUNNING ❤️ I wish I was as talented as you...and also the materials you choose are perfect!! Where did you get those naturalistic guides and pages? Simply love it.
Marcella, what a kind comment, thank you! I find a lot of the items I include in journals at estate sales. I find almost every estate sale has some old books and papers from a life well lived, and honestly most of the time these things are not valued in sales so I get them very cheap. Living in New England almost every home has a selection of bird books, animal reference guides etc. and if an estate sale is from someone who bought these books years and years ago they are often vintage, beautiful paper and tatty enough that I don't mind cutting them apart. If you live in the USA I highly encourage you to go through flea markets and estate sales for the best materials to use in creative projects.
@@MichelleRaeLandry Oh, sounds beautiful! Actually I live in Italy, and unfortunately I think that here the “trifting thing” is less common. By the way, I started asking my family and friends to call me before they get rid of book et simila, but I didn’t encounter anything as awesome as the pages you used...not yet, I hope. Thank you for your suggestion, I’ll follow your future works 😊 Stay safe!
Could you tell me where you got the latch for your lap book? I saw them somewhere once but can't remember where it was. I loved your version then I went and watched Nik's 12 episodes and I will sure be making one myself in the future.
Sounds like you binge watched Lapbooks in the last day! LOL I got the latch set on Amazon, it was relatively inexpensive. There are quite a few choices out there! I can't wait to experiment with other clasps and buckles as well.
@@MichelleRaeLandry I did. I did! I watched them all, one after the other. Since I wrote to you I did some snooping around and found some nice latches on etsy so I'm good to go. I've also found the perfect sized book to butcher for this project. I already have 4 other books on the go so I might not get to it immediately. lol I have a favorite etsy store that sells lovely book jewelry. Ornate frames etc. if you are interested in that just let me know. I've bought a lot of things from her and they were all quite lovely as little focal points. The hard part for me is always finding the right papers in my stash for the pages.
I've been waiting for this since you put it on Instagram. It's beautiful and I love the character you have created. I wish I'd thought of that closure - I've got a ton of them but had to build my "books" from scratch and got so engrossed that I completely forgot to put the metal book plate on the front which I had planned, and a closure, before I put on my inside papers. Idiot! I'll have to think of something else before I do too much more to it. Looking forward to your next venture. Hugs from Norfolk, UK
Thanks for the comment and the kind words. I actually put the clasp on almost at the end of the project so I knew it would close ok and I could place it in the right spot. It's never too late to add a bookplate or some kind of closure. We all do things that sometimes we wish we hadn't but it gives us the chance to problem solve doesn't it? The beauty of Junk Journals is anything goes, I'm sure your project is lovely!
Michelle, I absolutely love this. I already had watched Nik the Booksmith’s videos, and loved watching them. Do you sell any of your projects? TFS Your beautiful work with us 😊🌸💕
Hi Janet, I think Nik's Lapbook was popular with many of us! I haven't sold my books online yet, just commissioned pieces and gifts to family and friends. I do teach how to make books, among other things, but I am planning on opening an online store at some point. Right now still honing my style and figuring out what I can add to the junk journal community. I appreciate your comment. Thanks!

Susan Hamilton FYI I just saw some at Hobby Lobby!
What is the size of the encyclopedia books you used? I actually have an old set around somewhere.
It is relatively small for an encyclopedia... 9 x7 I believe.
Michelle Landry Creative Cottage Studio Thank you!
Thanks!

All it needs is a pen or pencil
I think you are right!!!! :-)
