Fun fact….I was adopted… birth grandmothers maiden name Is Otis. Extensive geneology showed thst I am a direct descendant of the Otis family. Pretty cool… I search for the name Otis in every elevator I get on.., cry a bit,,, snd take pictures… neat stuff
I had all the old ones WayGood to the latest 1954 series to the sky the Gave us all the training and the maximum Exposure and all products that was there in the area where I was working it takes time to know it's not overnight you can learn I am grateful to the company U T C for giving me the chance to work in their organization and be a part of it Thank you again Vijay
the older lifts that remembered calls were known as preselect, and worked off old controlers that held the relay in untill nearing contact in shaft that slowed it down untill it reached floor level.
I finally found somewhere with a properly old lift the other day, got a ride on a 1944 Otis gated lift (as well as a 1934 Johns & Waygood gated lift). I tried to get a ride on a 60s Otis that supposedly has buttons that pop out when you activate them for a call but that one is in the process of being horridly modernized by Otis with crap generic buttons and getting a ride didn't happen.
Otis is the American elevator company still around, all the other American elevator companies (Dover, Montgomery, United States Elevator Co., Haughton, and Westinghouse) were taken over by foreign elevator companies!
Wow look how far they’ve come
The 1980s lifts are the ones I’m most familiar with whenever I travelled to the US.

I've found a 1960's Evans lift in Bolton but the motor sounds like the 1930's freight lift at 2:03.

8:15 - why does that one sound like a violin? Is it the cable drum on the side of the lift?
I don't know what is really making the sound, other than it is called the "Gen2 Aeroplane."
I think Gen2 Airplane motor
@@lbsiuk Heard its the sound of the lift's belt cables rubbing against each other
the only lift from 1853 still in operating condition is in the Cooper Union Federation building in NEW YORK, AND IS BELT DRIVEN.
Modded in the 1950s but the motor was still original

Other elevator manufacturers, some maybe now extinct, include A.B.See(folded in the mid-1930s), Shepard, Singer, and Warner.
