    I had a very similar experience with the V6 Everest just recently. Got up the Yeargerup dune entrance in 4L but as I hit the top it went limp and threw the same error your shows on the dash. It happened again on Callcup Hill, again in 4L. It goes up in 4H without any issue, but 4L is my go-to when I think I'll get bogged so it's a bit concerning.
    Anyway the errors that my obd scanner can see is P061B-61, P061B-62 and P061B-64 all described as 'Torque Calculation - Performance Problem'.
    I'm yet to take mine back to Ford for further investigation.

      This is great info thanks mate! I’ve had a few other people reach out since seeing my video. Another person last night provided me with the same code so I think we’re onto something.
      I’ll provide this information to Ford and hopefully can get a resolution.
      I can’t assume Ford were aware of the issue before I first communicated my issue so the more of us that flag it with them the better.

      I understand the 4L 4H thing, but what mode have you selected... Wet, mud, sand, stones or low... I think that's where the issue lies in sand mode, I think it's not a problem, but try setting it to "BAJA" mode. So everything is POWERFULL!

    The new Rangers here in South Africa do the same thing in soft sand when you slightly bogged.
    A well known 4x4 presenter guy this side says he has had the same issue across a number of models including the Raptor. 4H and 4L.
    He says it’s the gearbox. When that happens the revs are limited to 1600RPM and the gearbox can get power / drive onto the wheels.
    Been a while since he reported it to Ford but they have not had any answers yet.

    awesome vid Mark, sorry to hear your problem with the Ford, the problem in most cases is fuel filter , lack of fuel to the fuel pump which can throw a code , but you can clear these codes and replace the filter and all is good, you have a EDS that will show the code that is the problem , Ford found no problems , i'm sure they will get it sorted

    • @Perth4WDandCamping

      Thanks mate. Yeah lack of code is an issue.. I’ve heard from a number of owners after my video who have had the same thing happen so I can also provide this context to Ford. I’m sure it’s something minor, but none the less annoying

    Sounds like a similar issue I had on Moreton island, towing a camper trailer in soft sand. Car seemed to be Revving like it had power but wasn’t coming through transmission well that’s what it seemed like.
    Another time I was towing my mates broken down 4wd out of the bush. Got a code on my Obd scanner P061B(61) torque calculation performance problem. Was able to clear and keep going but not great.
    Both times were in 4L with traction control properly off and trans temps were warm but not in the orange.. haven’t asked ford about it but keen to hear your results

    This is why the coil cabs will forever hold a place for me, comfort, power and reliability. Hate the new cars beeping at me for trying to down shift at Revs they don’t like, not having a seatbelt on when i start it or things like limp mode. Can’t beat mechanical. Even 79 series get limp mode codes for random reasons which also seams to happen when in soft sand when you need it most.. what is your coolant temp normally I note you said it was at 99, that should be safe still given a pressurised system however I wonder if it was climbing rapidly and the engine senses a risk and cuts fuel delivery?

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  3 місяці тому

      Yeah for sure. The beeps can be annoying. I have my ritual everytime I start the car turning things off ha!
      Coolant is usually well under 100 - this was a particularly warm day and soft sand. These cars will definitely go into protection mode if they detect things getting too hot.
      At times I wish I had something oldschool, but on the flipslide this is so nice to drive as a daily and tows like a dream. Always pros and cons hey.

    I had similar experience with an Everest, turned out to be dirt/dust in a electrical connector at the front of the vehicle. Maybe you've got beach sand in a connection somewhere

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  5 місяців тому

      Ford have been digging further and found a fault code, which could be connected. I’ll give an update next week in a vid 👍

  • @angusmacgyver1390
    @angusmacgyver1390 6 місяців тому +1

    I can tell you from personal experience that FORD can see all incidents that can cause limp mode and when the incident occurred, even hidden ones that can come on for a short period before no further indication to the user even if you don't use the Sync App. As soon as you get within cell coverage all warnings and messages displayed on dash will be uploaded. If you have turned off the vehicle location and data connection this will be stored for a period but note some messages may only hold for 150 restarts of the engine.
    I own a FORD Ranger Raptor 2020.75 and had a minor issue with hard transmission shifting that had a message then disappeared on a return trip from Melbourne, I went in to FORD at Toowoomba and they were able to see all messages that had been synced to their system and all messages sent through to the Synch app. They had more information than was sent to the app, they also could see how many restarts it would take before the message would be deleted. Issue has since been corrected, no further issues.

    • @Perth4WDandCamping

      They had the car a whole day and assured me there were no codes 🤷‍♂️ Hopefully like your issue, mine can be resolved

  • @andreabta
    @andreabta 5 місяців тому +2

    I believe that the issue stand in high temp in your transfer case. As they don't have a gauge but they do have a sensor most likely the transfer case temp would have been very high driving in 4L. I have had no issue with mine but I have used 4L only once usually I drive in 4A or 4H in sand mode with rear diff locked... See if you can measure transfer case temp if is doing it again just out of curiosity and let us know or try and use sand mode.. If you don't have it your ford dealer should be able to activate it or simply use 4H and rear diff lock and it set by Ford in sand mode

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  5 місяців тому +1

      4L should be fine for the short use I had it in. The Manual states it can be used for deep sand - which was the conditions I was in. I’ve been ok in 4H to date. A fault code has been found by Ford on looking into it deeper - I’ll cover off in my next vid.

    Hello, Greetings from Spain, I have been waiting for my Raptor for 3 months now, I hope it arrives soon. There is no doubt that it is a piece of 4x4 with everything it comes standard. My humble opinion, even without having the car yet, I think it is not a problem, maybe when driving on sand you have not set the driving mode correctly and the ranger may think that it is slipping and pressing the brakes, like the traction control, it is not If you tried putting low mode, they say that "almost everything" is disconnected. I still remember my first time just leaving the dealership with my Mitsubishi DiD Montero without having any idea about driving a 4x4 20 years ago, I went to the beach and tried to go but the car stayed, I stepped harder and braked harder, I went to It lasted closer to the water and when I turned to go back there it stayed....The traction control towards theirs, I said last chance, 4x4 low gear...plim disconnected and when I stepped on it I left there as if it were in a tank of chains...with a smile from side to side. Later, with many more inventions, I always thought that the Mitsubishi was a true tank that went for everything, they even put a lock on it. I think the new ranger is a great car "the M1 Abrams"

    My guess that is that some how sand is getting sucked in to something and it’s getting stuck when you take off the power and then put power back on and car sensors are trying to protect itself by going into limp mode.
    Kind of like when outboard motor sucks a bit of sand if you keep the power on it should pass through the motor but as soon take off the power it will stick and the outboard will start to overheat or go into limp mode when you want to go faster. With out outboard it’s happened to me without any codes.

    • @Perth4WDandCamping

      My air filter element was clear of sand and have secondary filter on the snorkel too. Mate , it's a "Ford Thing" 🤣🤣🤣Mine went into limp mode at wooramel station, same deal , tyres down, alarm on dash, low range and I got bogged at the time 🙃🙃🙃
    Restarted the car after digging out ( and turning traction control off, always forget to do that ) out of limp mode so I recon your on the money with lower pressures ( alarm ) and low range driving. The car probably thought there was an issue, they are too smart these days.
    I also had a limp mode experience towing the caravan way out in the wheatbelt and had water in my fuel, limp mode, then it shut the car down, A 2 hour tow truck ride to Geraldton, mechanic clears about 20 codes, changed fuel filter, then we were good to go. Again had the car not gone into limp mode and shutting down I may have been looking at a new engine.
    I also felt that the car wasn't reliable to take us to the places we go, but now , touch wood 😁😁😁I know it will get us home. I now have a scan tool just incase I have to phone a friend 😁😁😁and as back up Full RAC cover 👍👍👍

      G’day Paul. Really depends on the sand/terrain. 14PSI is generally good on the Mickey Thompson’s as they don’t bag out as much as 2 ply AT tyres. They are 3 ply tyre so quite thick. I’ve had them as low as 10PSI before. For firmer rocky tracks around 24PSI, and have had them at 18PSI for some slippery trails. Short answer is test what works best on your tyres.

  • @fabulousoffroaddesigns5080

    In sand you should be in low range with the rear locker, locked. This shuts off the nannies and will run locked up to 60 mph. Also try double tapping the traction control button in Sport Mode.

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  6 місяців тому

      Certainly for deep sand yes which was how I’ve used it and the direction Ford state in the manual. Interestingly, ‘sand mode’ which is a feature on the Sport, Wildtrak and Platinum models activates 4H. I don’t understand why they don’t provide all the drive modes to XLT owners given it’s all the same running gear.

Maybe it doesn't like that area? :D I also thought it could be due to tyre pressure, which makes no sense as we should be letting them down for sand. See you back in a Pajero Sport shortly? Just kidding, but that is very worrying, especially if you were in a precarious position.

      Yeah that’s the worry isn’t it - you can’t exactly sit there for 15min and wait for it to reset if you’re in a tricky spot, or the tides coming in etc. Hoping I can get to the bottom of it soon 🤞

    Not good mark that’s why I’m not keen on technology in new cars .i have a 98 prado yes I’m limited to weight I can tow but not a lot of technology to go wrong hope all works out mate for you

      Thanks mate. I knew there was a risk going to a new generation of 4WD that’s a big leap from the models before that there’s a risk of a few early gremlins. I do however need a fully functioning 4L and hopefully can get to the bottom of it because for everything else, it’s such an awesome car and tows like a dream. Will keep everyone posted.

    Soft hot sand like thar you air down to .08 bar. I never buy a vehicle untill 3 years after launch, there is always some glitches and that includes toyota. Toyota owners just keep it to themselves or make an excuse why it went wrong.

      @slots412 thanks. Yeah just find it interesting as Ford have been running the 10R80 in the US since 2017 so it’s had plenty of runtime so surprised there would be any sort of issue.
      Yeah that’s it all cars can have issues - no make or model is immune.

    Unfortunately it’s a ford v6, the same engine that powered a bunch of land rovers and was known for its unreliability. I would not buy a ford as ford, in terms of sales only sells one car.. the ranger and its wagon version Everest, if something disrupts ranger sales ford will do a Holden and disappear. On a practical note everyone who is exploring in any kind of semi remote or brace area should invest in a good quality OBd reader that can read current faults, reset codes, log data, it’s very common for the faults to only be held in current or active memory, you could log a heap of temperate, oil pressures, sensor outputs, transmission states, boost levels, requested torque , inlet air temp and work out what’s going on pretty quickly, it’s as an essential tool as a socket or screwdriver

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  6 місяців тому

      Too soon to determine what is the cause - engine, transmission, a sensor.. Could be anything. Overall it’s been a very reliable motor for me. Just need to get this 4L issue resolved.
      I carry a ScanGauge 2. If it does it again will certainly not assume it’s logged a code and see if I can take a photo of the code whilst the car is running. There is also the chance however, that the issue I’m having is not dropping a code at all.
      Will keep everyone posted.

      Don’t mind a mitsi - my previous Pajero Sport was very reliable rig. That’s said, neither a PS or Pajero comes close to the towing performance of the V6 Ranger which is really important to us

    • @Perth4WDandCamping
      @Perth4WDandCamping  6 місяців тому

      They’ve made plenty of great cars. You have to remember the Ranger/Everest/Amarok platform is huge step forward for the category and as a result is the no.1 selling car in Aus.
      Based on the info I’ve received from this video it certainly doesn’t appear to be a common issue, but now have enough info to give a more detailed update to Ford. Irrespective of how prevalent an issue is, it’s still far from ideal and hopefully can get to the bottom of it soon.
