You mentioned the comment from BBC about a bus driver’s skill level. I know of one skill you and many bus drivers must have is patients dealing with people. Your dealing with people is second to none. And your driving skills are second to none.
The county transit authority where I go to college uses boxes on Ford E-series vans and Gillig buses. Given the geography of the area, Gilligs are clearly very capable vehicles. The drivers always complain that the buses aren't maintained very well, yet they still climb the steep hills just like any other heavy vehicle I've operated (I grew up on a farm in an area with similar geography).
Ugh, I used to drive, and it’d always tick me off when kids be doing Tarzan moves out the bus blocking that front window in the process. There was time in the 70s and early 80s when buses had no A/C, no partition behind the driver and back windows. Oh yeah, the front and back doors were manual (there was a handle the driver would operate to open the front door, the passengers would open the back door to exit), and no electronic fare boxes. (honor system), with paper transfers torn off at the hour the transfer would expire.

Where I drive we have handle for front and back doors, fareboxes usually work, but fares are looked at as donations so to me our fares are irrelevant and paper transfers are still part of our system and times are set between 90 minutes to 2-3, 4 or maybe 5 hours depending on the driver. You could show me a library card and still ride. Oh and that's so I don't have to go to the hospital after an assault. Oh and yes usually the A/C works, but hand buses earlier this summer in 40+Celsius .......no A/C and no tradeoffs
Greyhound buses are the same way because driving on the expressway where it's pitch black when it's dark outside could be irritating. Daytime is a lot better to see but heavy traffic. Thank you for spreading your pros and cons Bus Driver Life!
How are the right mirrors on an intercity bus set up? I’ve noticed on my transit bus that I have a huge blindspot for traffic in the right lane when on the highway or any other area where I’m not curbside. The wideview mirror only shows so much and the narrow view mirror is pointed downward toward the right rear tire to negotiate turns, which leaves a huge blindspot on the right. It’s like I need a third right side mirror.
New Flyer is similar at the front doors, so sometimes when I would pull up to an intersection I would quickly open the front doors to eliminate that blind spot where the rubber meets on the middle of the doors. Huge visual difference
One of the bus drivers on my route in the morning does that as well. When she is pulling out of the station she'll quickly open the doors and look out, and then close them while she's turning. Awesome to watch and never thought about how the door seam creates such a dangerous blind spot.
I’ve seen a lot of local bus drivers do the same when they are at an intersection where they are making a left turn. The only downside I’ve seen with that is that it turns off the “Stop Requested” sign (if it was lit before the turn). This means that either the driver has to remember if someone wanted to get off at the next stop, or a passenger wanting to get off has to pay attention and request the stop again as soon as the doors are closed after the turn.
I am looking into becoming a bus driver. You are the only channel I have actually come across and used. The videos/information is fantastic, and I love how you articulate, talk and present the information, coherent, thoughtful, very useful. Thanks.
Yeah. That mirror blind spot is the worst. Approaching a roundabout, traffic coming from the left at the same speed can be obstructed all the way to the roundabout. Its terrifying. As drivers we need to organize and force Gillig and other manufacturers to make that mirror adjustable, slide it up or down to accommodate tall or short drivers to ge that mirror out of the way.
I really love Gilligs with a passion, I wish CTA would order some but they won't. We just gonna order more Novas only, some of the operators don't like riding the Novas or the new Novas too much. PACE we have New Flyer Xclesior XD40 but they only run for West Division Garage and Northwest Garage have El Dorado National Axess BRTs and South Division Garage have all the El Dorado National Axess BRT CNG buses which is what I love the most. Thank you Bus Driver Life!
Sometimes management does not help the situation by specifying buses with visual obstructions. One example can be security screens that have maskings that block the driver's over the shoulder view.
Great video, and you're doing a great service with these videos. People should appreciate bus and all transit drivers more. I'd hope that more people become interested in the job based on videos like yours, and that bus drivers would get to make input on how buses and bus routes could be better designed.
Here in Philly, SEPTA uses Nova Bus LFS both in 40ft and 60ft and the New Flyer LF. The Gillig you're operating is similar to the Nova Bus, they lack the side glass wipers.

On school buses, they have windows on the back door, but on some of them, the control panel is in front of the rear view mirror, making it useless. Also, once when I was driving through fog, the door windows were so foggy, I had to open them at intersections to look for traffic.

I can only imagine how bad it had to be for those B46 drivers when the ATS was knocked out on December 12, 2014. Those buses got so full that some basically had to stand right by the door just to avoid getting left behind, and people were _still_ forced to wait for another bus.
Notwithstanding the blind spots, I don't want to think about how many of them would struggle just from the fact that a 40' vehicle handles WAY differently from a car.
I had a route during the holidays last year that went through a busy shopping district. The road was so narrow that if a car was parked more than a few inches from the curb I would have to wait for opposing traffic to pass before I could swerve around it. During peak hours I would have to drive about 10 blocks at 5mph because pedestrians wouldn't even ATTEMPT to make eye contact with me before crossing the street in my blind spots. Super frustrating for myself as well as impatient passengers. One complaint that stuck with me was this guy who yelled out, "What are we on a tractor at a goat farm??!!!" Was hard not to start laughing at that one. 😂
Lol! Wow some people don’t understand why we need to drive slow sometimes but it’s always good to find the humor in these situations! I hate driving through shopping areas.
The biggest visibility issue is the GARBAGE headlamps on 80% of these buses. It’s honestly shocking how bad they are. Either they’re worn out from being in night run all the time, or the mechanics just install them wrong so they’re aimed incorrectly. Thankfully my company is in the process of making the fleet more electrified with exoterra and new flyers which have more advanced led headlights like what new cars have. As far as the self driving thing goes, I just hope I can get 20-30 years out of this gig and retire.
The cabin for the driver in front makes me think of the Saint Thonas busses. Lots of blind spots. International is much better since there are less obstructing bars 2:30
Man this whole situation seems very weird, and also bad. Like the bus may technically live up to regulations but the fact drivers have no input on the design and that such glaring design faults can make it past the concept stage is baffling to me. The front door especially. Like as a European I am baffled at the fact they are using a bulky double door for that when the width only warrants a single sliding door. Like a good comparison would be something like the VDL Citea which on its options with a narrow front door feature a single sliding door on the front with great visibility. Same goes for other models like the Mercedes Benz Citaro, the Ebusco 2.2, Iveco Crossway, Solaris Urbino, and many others. Like I think it also has to do with competition. In North America competition between manufacturers is very little and like you said bus drivers don't have any say so there's very little push for manufacturers to actually try and make their vehicles better for neither the Driver or passengers, since they know they're guaranteed deals almost no matter what. Like I know aestethics are a different thing but most North American bus models, and the Gilligs especially look like they're still stuck in the 90's designwise, including in their tackling of such issues which is just horrible, and further hinders the reputation of buses in North America. I mean compare a current Gillig or Novabus model, to the current models by MAN and VDL or even cheap manufacturers like Yutong and the difference is night and day.
The entire concept of buses in the US is a matter of build and repair costs. An individual universal rectangular double door is cheaper to fix than a single door. The glass is cheaper and easier to replace when an angry person kicks and breaks it. Everything revolves around universal design, just like the US car industry had Oldsmobile, Buick, Chevrolet, and Pontiac using the same framework for cars. Those wonderfully expansive view single glass pane windshields are expensive compared to a flat split windshield.
Nice video keep it up I love your video Keywan bro also this is true in London also I like the new profile picture it look nice! Nice video keep it up Keywan bro and don't give up
Had a recent accident for this reason...Looking at my blind spot, thought a motorcycle was on my right (London bus) while moving on traffic car in front stops suddenly and yes result you know....
This is my Sunday run so I did have some extra time..but it took 3 of my breaks on this end to film this and I had to be quick lol. 😆 Thanks for watching!!!
Some passengers are idiots who don't follow the rules but if get hurt want to sue or get the bus driver fired. When I did ride the public bus I did not stand up until the bus came to a complete stop .and I exited the front door not the back
You could do that on some of the older buses, not necessarily on the newer ones, Also, getting on the bus, some operators may pull away from the stop before you can find a seat.
All BBC employees work low skilled jobs. Now back to the bus. I prefer the Gillig Phantom over the BRT. But if I had to choose a low floor model, it would be a Gillig Advantage or a Novabus LFS.
Is it hard to drive a bus? I drive a leaf that's a small car, lol. 😆 I'm scared to drive a bus. I have a job interview with Metro tomorrow, and I have zero experience going in. Is turning difficult? Also, seeing you explaining the bind spots is scary, too. 😨
the newer ENC Axess BRT has really bad front left blindspots from the mirror to the front of the a pillers even worse then your gillig. plus if you dont have the wheel angled down, you cant see the speedo. the older buses in the fleet, dont have these blindspots. x.x its like the people who design these buses dont drive them.
What's your bus company's policy on capacity (assuming buses regularly get full in Sacramento)? Here in Chicago, most drivers will allow as many people as possible to cram into a bus as long as the doors close, resulting in multiple people blocking the doors(of course not during COVID). Is that the same thing with your company? or is it more limiting.
We definitely get full buses normally..we fill up until the white line so we can pack as many people in until that point..but currently at 14 people allowed..im sure that number will change soon with schools set to reopen this month. We’ll see...I know it gets really busy in Chicago!
That sounds weird. Here in Denmark at least there are listed capacity numbers both inside the bus and on the outside for how many passengers can legally be onboard. For some models its higher than others but as an example, a pretty popular model right now is the Yutong E12 Electric bus, which legally has room for 33 seated passengers and 33 standees, in a total of 66. Most buses have higher numbers, usually around 70-80 but even then that capacity is rarely used up since most can't figure out walking up into the backend, meaning the limit comes when additional passengers getting on can't get past the yellow line right behind the driver. Even if there are available seats in the back, then passengers can't get to them. The drivers will often yell "Move further back" to the passengers onboard but they can rarely comprehend moving up 2 steps into the raised back section.
@@drdewott9154 In the US, passenger capacity is routinely ignored, it’s more a matter of how many people can you cram inside. One reason for this is because it’s impossible for the operator to keep an accurate passenger count with people alighting through the rear doors. Another reason is because nobody wants to be left behind to wait for another bus no matter how crowded the bus is.
It's a gillig brt plus so yeah it's hard af. But I wish someone would tell a nabi 60 brt or any articulated bus that this is easy bc not only is the front is danger but the back part aswell

I think everybody's acting entitled nowadays it's because of the abundance of low floors vehicles. Every transit has them now, exacerbating people's sense of entitlement. It's a right, rather than a privilege. At least with high floors, the bus drivers had seniority, you knew you had the ball you knew YOU control the court, and everybody else knew their role, so to speak. Now with low floor dominated the bus market, the bus drivers LOST your seniority and basically everybody including the people who hired you walks over you. I mean we don't need low floors THAT much. Not EVERYBODY'S old or handicapped. Most people are just fat, lazy and entitled, and city managers, city planners, mayors and commissioners are looking for loopholes, sleazy deals, offshoring, importing, and fast easy money, via lobbying and scheming with automotive industries. The same MFs that criminalized JAYWALKING; they want to control and dictate how people use the roads.

This is one of the main reasons why I personally despise Gilligs.
Nice video keep it up I love your video Keywan bro also this is true in London also I like the new profile picture it look nice! Nice video keep it up Keywan bro and don't give up
Good video I learned a lot from this video merry Christmas
Thank you!
Bus Operaters should be able to have access to outside bus cameras so it can be easier to see whats going on outside the bus moving or not
Had a recent accident for this reason...Looking at my blind spot, thought a motorcycle was on my right (London bus) while moving on traffic car in front stops suddenly and yes result you know....
This is why people should start playing bus simulators more. In first person mode, a gamer is pretty much in the shoes of a bus operator.
When I drove for Philadelphia transit that driver side mirror had a terrible blind spot
Wish me luck I'll be driving soon haha
You got it!
very good video. well done. great points.
Thank you!!
Buddy got hella time at the EOL lol
This is my Sunday run so I did have some extra time..but it took 3 of my breaks on this end to film this and I had to be quick lol. 😆 Thanks for watching!!!
That middle of the door is very bad had a few close calls we have new flyers c40s
Yes!!! I hate it! Just make it all clear if possible..that would be great.
@@BusDriverLife yea i never understood why they dont make them clear
Thanks
in case of an accident, if I'm a bus driver, can people sue me? go after my house and money? I love your videos.
Push and pull 5 miles hour making a turn also great video
Exactly!!! Thanks!!
Yep, not too difficult to report fake news.
Just understand this:
You have to split lanes and remember swing wide it's a FRIGGIN TRAILER!!!

Wrong channel, you bonehead. 😂 😉
nice information thank you sir
Actually.... that white line is called a "Standee line" come on California commerical driver handbook.
Very true!! I’m just trying to keep it as simple as possible for everyone! 😎
@@BusDriverLife I'm not giving you attitude but the Channel is called BUS DRIVER LIFE!!!! Why we gotta wait for them?
You rock your body? This explains why everyone looked at
Everyone looked at me funny when I bought the drum set
the newer ENC Axess BRT has really bad front left blindspots from the mirror to the front of the a pillers even worse then your gillig. plus if you dont have the wheel angled down, you cant see the speedo. the older buses in the fleet, dont have these blindspots. x.x its like the people who design these buses dont drive them.
Maybe it's time technology invents transparent pillars.
That would be cool!
That white line is a joke at times because you know it and I know it when the bus is full people stand right at the farebox
@@drdewott9154
In the US, passenger capacity is routinely ignored, it’s more a matter of how many people can you cram inside.
How so?
they just need to go back to the Gillig Phantoms those were the best bus
Hey! What’s your favorite bus city bus (or school bus) to drive and/or look at?
Branstube Gaming #2 My favorite city buses are the GMC/TMC/NOVA RTS buses...I can look at those all day!! There are a few more but I’m actually gonna make a video showing all of my favorite buses and unpopular opinions on buses I don’t really like! Great question!!
@@BusDriverLife in new York city they retired all of the 1997 1998 nova rts buses those buses were work horses could not kill them now all we have low floor local buses
Mad Hatter I really regret not making a trip to ride those buses before they retired them!! 😢
@@BusDriverLife yup great buses the good thing is we have a nice museum fleet with buses from the 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s they put in passenger service at the holidays and they bring out for bus shows
Mad Hatter That’s great!! I have to get to the east coast soon to see that!
How about the people that bang on the bus when you are about too take off 😡😡🤬🤬
Seymour Butts That’s extremely annoying!
When will you review the obi orion ng hev im a big fan off those buses
Bro! FR!! I always triple quadruple check bruh
Stay safe out their brother.
Cris Thanks bro..you too!!
Inaddition to bad weather.
Nice video bud
Will’s UNWILD Vlogs Channel I appreciate that!!
No problem bud :)
y have to do with a bline spot on a bus just make the bline spot fiberglass that will make it more safe!
My dream is always want to be a cta driver
That’s why we rock n roll in our seat bitches!!!
Yup!!
Not feeling the BRT look.
Give us the classic GILLIG SLF look any day LoL
I drive a bus though the college I go to and sometimes the bus gets a overload that we can not fit anyone eals on the bus standing or sitting and the routes that get a overload is the route 30 route 31 and sometimes route 38 and route 39 most of the time I get stuck driving the route 38 and route 39 and they usually get a overload when there are parties at the other 3 colleges and the route 38 and route 39 gets mostly women college student passengers because the route 38 and route 39 go to all womens colleges and sometimes when the bus is a overload the passangers that are standing block the back door and the front do that it is hard to see over all the students on the bus and I have been the only boy on the bus with about 200 to 250 women passengers with me driving the bus
Just ask your garage supervisor to give you a extended bus or as bus drivers call them a articulate bus
Kenneth Alexander
Have you ever driven an RTS?
No I haven’t but I’d love to drive one someday. It was my favorite bus as a kid.
@@BusDriverLife same, hearing the scream of that DD series 50, the squeal of the brakes and the driver flinging the doors open is something I wont forget. Which series of RTS have you seen? I've seen the T7W603, T80206, RTS Legend and T8J204.
The correct bus should be: Gillig Advantage Plus.
It’s not that hard to drive a bus .. as long as you know use your mirrors and know where you blind spots are . I love NYCTA has pedestrian warning system. Don’t cross the white line federal law prohibits the operation of the vehicle. But let’s be real somethimes their a pack bus have people riding past that line ..
Don’t drive a Nova Bus lots of blind spots
Now I see why gilligs are banned from Canada
Wow!! They are actually banned?? No wonder I never see Gilligs on videos and pictures from Canada
I heard Gillig doesn’t sell buses in Canada
Looks like in Europe we have here much better and safer designed busses
Don’t get me started on Fiona Bruce at the BBC as she does not have a clue what she’s talking about as bus driving is an extremely skilful job.
@FionaBruce, I feel Violated... I play now you see it now you don't all day long.. How do you feel about the Eldorado's?
But compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano ain’t shit!
Lol, are you really criticizing jaywalking being illegal on a channel centered on bus drivers, who are constantly hampered by jaywalkers?! 😂
