Me and my friend Nancy Jo saw this in a theatre in the village when it came out. It was a full house. After it was over, nobody would leave the theatre. We all cheered and chanted so hard that they played it again. It was pretty cool!
I’m reading a Playboy from March 1992 page 24 upper left hand corner Linda Konner wrote that Steve won an Oscar in 1989 for this, so I had to watch. He and I were born a few month apart in 1955 and I’m from Boston too. Thanks for posting.
I saw this short film when it first came out. I was probably 10-12 years old. It literally changed my life and is one ofd the most absurdly brilliant comedies I have ever watched. I love Steven Wright anbd this movie is just pure fun!!!!
Utterly brilliant tour through the imagination of the most gifted and original comic of his age. I have been a fan since his first appearance on Carson.
This is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE! In this short film, Steven Wright has captured what it is like to have an INTP mind in a way that will NEVER be topped.
Easter egg: the film setting jumps all over the US. First it's in Seattle (Steven reads the "Seattle Chronicle" in the waiting room) then he has an apartment just above Worth Auto Parts in Worth, Illinois, then he sees on television his girlfriend and analyst in Greenwich Village. There may be more jumps; those are just the ones I noted during one viewing.
Never heard of this live action short until today when I watched Steven Wright on Colbert, on UA-cam. The comments led me here. I completely lost it during the scene when he's sitting alone watching TV and it's of a guy watching HIM on TV -- watching each other. Why? I don't know!
I met Steven in SeaTac airport. I think he was surprised I recognized him and that I asked for his autograph. I was over the moon! I LOVED his comedy specials and any time I caught him in a tv show or movie. Even in Swan Princess. He asked if I was traveling to New York and I told him I was just seeing my mom off and he said that was a shame. He wrote some flattering comment on the paper and I told him thank you. I wished I could have stayed talking with him but my mom was nervous about flying and I was getting the stink eye from her and my stepdad. 🙄 Plus I didn’t want to be a pest. Such a funny guy! And very nice!
Thank you so much for posting this! I feared this was lost humor. Saw this, Dr Strange Love, Jacob's Ladder, A Clockwork Orange on borrowed tapes circa 1991 far too many times to be healthy. Thanks for the relapse. :)
The Appointments of Dennis Jennings is a 1988 American short comedy film, starring, co-written and co-produced by Steven Wright, which won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film at the 61st Academy Awards in 1988.
Does nobody see the Eraserhead similarities? The wind blowing at the beginning. The loud whining of the elevator? The bizarre content?I can't believe there were no followups to this. This is brilliant!
Those Oscar statuettes are actually lifesize, they just look small because the actors are all midget giants. The carpets are called red, but the shows are actually filmed in black and white. That is true acting. Steven was filming a documentary that night of himself winning the Oscar, but the music played him offstage for a commercial so it couldn't be released as a full feature film, just the shortest musical ever made. He had expected a lot more swag in the gift bag backstage, but all he got was an alarm clock that rang in braille. After a heated discussion with the staff, they finally agreed to swap it out for another clock, but that one only had the number '12'. They said, "Don't complain, these clocks are exactly right twice a day. You'll just have to organize your schedule around it." He was so nervous he had hired someone to ghostwrite his acceptance speech that evening, but unfortunately it was a mime.
Very weird, but very funny! This video hasn't had me sitting in front of it, listening to it and seeing it before. At least as far as my Swiss cheese memory can recall. Not only does my memory have holes in it, but it kinda smells like Swiss cheese at times.
Does this story take place in the _Frasier_ universe? It's about a man who visits a contemptible psychiatrist, David Hyde Pierce has a cameo at the restaurant, and Steven even reads from a Seattle newspaper at one point -- but then, this came out before that show... does _Frasier_ take place in Dennis Jennings' universe? 0_o
StringDeposit + glad , it did . S . Wright should have strived to do many more , that was his 'green light' at that time , he should have ran with it , but wtf? Do I know? Would have been great tho'

Always will be the one I go to to make me laugh. Steven Wright is a comedian like no other.
The good weird and quirky ones caught onto Steven Wright early on. You either got him or you never did. Always loved his work💕
